  • Bangkok Under My Skin: The Mantra Etched By Arjan Neng

Bangkok Under My Skin: The Mantra Etched By Arjan Neng By Shriniwas Kodape Bangkok Under My Skin: The Mantra Etched By Arjan Neng 28 July 2025 LIFESTYLE Advertisement It was the kind of Bangkok morning that smells like motorbike oil, incense smoke, and wet concrete—the kind where time slips sideways, and your hangover negotiates with the gods. I took the alley like I was stepping into a fever dream—barefoot monks brushing past neon signs, the street food vendors already yelling, the city already sweating. Somewhere deeper in the maze of On Nut, I found him. Arjan Neng . Not a man. Not quite a myth either. Just a calm force sitting on a tiger pelt, like the morning was waiting for him to speak first. This was my fourteenth tattoo. I didn’t come for the design. I came for the surrender. The ritual. The silence. The Sak Yant . I'd heard stories— Bourdain’s voice lingering in my head like distant thunder. Not for the camera, but for the truth. The raw, old magic of it all. Inside the modest temple room, candles flickered in front of golden effigies. His students moved wordlessly around him, preparing ink, checking offerings, lighting incense that smelled like molasses and rain. No needles buzzing here. Just bamboo. Fire. Breath. A monk's whisper and a master’s hand. I handed over flowers, incense, and cigarettes—standard offerings, but not transactional. You don’t pay for a Sak Yant. You offer. You don’t demand. You accept. You sit still and trust. Arjan Neng didn’t ask what I wanted. He placed his hand on my arm and closed his eyes. I didn’t flinch. I had thirteen tattoos already—some tribal, some absurd, some forgotten. But this one was different. It wasn’t about art. It wasn’t even about pain. It was about letting go. The sak—the sacred ink—is mixed with oils, herbs, even snake venom or bone dust, depending on the lineage. The yant—the yantra—is ancient geometry meets prayer. Not decorative. Protective. Guiding. A spiritual circuit board etched into skin. He began. The bamboo rod moved fast and deliberate, its tip striking with a rhythm older than language. Tap. Tap. Tap. It didn’t hurt like a machine. It hurts like poetry being drilled into your soul. My skin opened and bled under his hands, and he chanted in Pali with a low, looping cadence that made the room feel like it was spinning just slightly off-axis. I didn’t know what he was inscribing. I didn't want to know yet. That was the point. This wasn’t a tattoo you pick off a wall. This was one the master chose for you. A mantra. A map. Through the haze, I caught flashes of his own journey— Arjan Neng had trained under revered monks deep in the countryside, learning the sacred geometry and invocations that stretch back centuries. His lineage traces through old jungle temples and battlefield monks who inked warriors before war. This wasn’t street mysticism. It was scripture written in flesh. He finished without ceremony. Just a nod. My arm throbbed, blood mixed with black ink trailing down my elbow like a signature. One of his disciples cleaned it, then placed a square of gold leaf on the fresh wound. Not for decoration—for blessing. Then came the final chant, the activation. Without that, the Sak Yant is just a tattoo. And then… silence. Not awkward silence. Not temple silence. Just peace. Out in the alley again, the city resumed its riot. Tuk-tuks screeched, dogs barked, the skyline hissed in the heat. But I moved through it differently now—like a line had been drawn between me and the chaos. A mantra lived on my arm. Not a tiger, not a demon, not some Instagrammable charm. A sacred formula Arjan Neng had chosen just for me. For protection, maybe. Or clarity. Or balance. Who knows? You don’t always need to understand the fire to feel its warmth. Later that night, I lit a cigarette on my hotel balcony, Bangkok flickering below me like a faulty neon sign. The tattoo still burned, but it wasn’t painful anymore. It was a memory. It was a presence. It was Bangkok under my skin. And for the first time in a long while, I didn’t need to ask why. • Simulation Theory: What if we were just illusions?

SOCIETY by Akash Khatri Simulation Theory: What if we were just illusions? 1 November 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement What if our reality was just an illusion? What if our truths about existence are nothing but a myth? The universe is nothing but just a mirror facing another mirror! Like a dream inside a dream! “Simulation theory” is a current trending topic, many tags this as a conspiracy theory. The modern history of this mind-boggling theory started in the year 2003 with one publication by an Oxford Professor named Nick Bostrom and the paper that opened the gates of our curiosity regarding “Simulation theory” was “Are You Living in a Computer Simulation”? As per him, we are already in simulation, and with the possibilities of advances in virtual reality, we will (the simulated creatures) will create our own simulations and gradually the only civilization that will sustain would be simulated one! The three main points from his speech were: Civilization will come to an end before we get to the next level i.e. post-human level where we can create our own designed simulations. We developed the capability of creating “simulation”, but we decided not to use it yet, thinking (perhaps) that it is unethical or against the morality to do so! We are probably living in a simulation. In the recent era, many famous personalities have also become obsessed with the fact that maybe we are nothing but just fabricated or coded by super-human beings or super-coders who are monitoring every move of ours and to some extent controlling the way we are behaving! We are nothing but just a part of the virtual simulations in a mega computer! The Déjà vu we experience is nothing but just a glitch in the matrix or in simpler terms “coding errors”! Perhaps that is why sometimes we feel these uncanny eyes are following us or watching us out of nowhere! We cannot really find who is making us feel watched over, but we get the feeling for sure! Now let us talk about tech visionaries. Do they believe in this theory? The answer is YES! The tech visionaries and futurists do not believe in the old idea of Newton where they said that the creation of the Universe was simply by an accidental natural phenomenon. Most of today’s visionaries try to see the creation of the Universe as a simulation which was aided by super-intelligence. One of the quotes by Elon Musk regarding “Simulation Theory” that went viral was: “Given that we’re clearly on a trajectory to have games that are indistinguishable from reality and those games could be played on any set-top box or any PC, and there would probably be billions of computer or set-top boxes, it would seem to follow that the odds we are in base reality are one in billions.” But there are few scientists and techies who have totally dismissed the idea saying this whole theory is not even scientific in the first place! Why should we be bothered to know whether we are living in a simulation or not? Not only because people are crazily discussing about this topic lately but to know and acknowledge the truth! Why we should find out the real answer to this theory is to find out our realities so that we can survive if the need arises ever in the future! #Oxford #illusion #Simulationtheory #Reality #supercomputers #dejavu #Conspiracytheory #ElonMask SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world? Mood Indigo, IIT Bombay’s Iconic Celebration Of December By Shriniwas Kodape Mood Indigo, IIT Bombay’s Iconic Celebration Of December 14 December 2025 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Every winter, something extraordinary happens at IIT Bombay. The campus quietly sheds its academic rhythm and steps into something far more alive. Music spills into corridors. Open lawns turn into dance floors. Conversations begin with strangers and end as friendships. This transformation has a name that carries decades of memory and madness. Mood Indigo 2025 . From 16th to 18th December, IIT Bombay will once again become a living celebration of youth culture. Thousands of students from across India and beyond will gather not just to attend a festival but to live inside it. Mood Indigo is not about watching from the sidelines. It is about participation. It is about showing up as you are and leaving with stories you will carry for years. What sets Mood Indigo apart is its soul. It remains completely free for college students, a rare and powerful statement in today’s festival landscape. Here, access is not bought. It is earned by curiosity, creativity, and the simple desire to belong. MI feels like a reminder of what youth culture is meant to be. Open. Inclusive. Fearlessly expressive. What began in 1971 as a modest campus celebration has grown into Asia’s largest college cultural festival. Over five decades, Mood Indigo has become more than an annual event. It has evolved into a legacy. A space where generations of students have discovered their voice. A platform where artists connected with audiences long before the world knew their names. A place where memories outlast degrees. Walking through Mood Indigo feels like entering a parallel city. One where fashion is personal and experimental. One where conversations flow easily and nights stretch endlessly. One where every corner offers something unexpected. From high energy cultural competitions and street performances to design showcases, art installations, and interactive zones, creativity is not curated. It simply exists everywhere. Mood Indigo 2025 promises to take that experience even further with a lineup that speaks directly to the pulse of this generation while honoring nostalgia. Taking center stage this year is Sonu Nigam. His voice carries decades of emotion and collective memory. A Sonu Nigam performance at MI is not just a concert. It is a shared moment where thousands sing together, smile together, and feel something deeply familiar. Adding an international touch is Dhruv, the global indie pop artist whose music resonates with young audiences across the world. His presence reflects MI’s global outlook and its ability to connect cultures through sound. Hip hop lovers are in for a thrill with Seedhe Maut and Karma, bringing raw energy, sharp lyricism, and unapologetic honesty to the stage. For those drawn to musical depth and soul, The Anand Bhaskar Collective offers rich fusion sounds that blend tradition with modern expression. Chaar Diwari brings an experimental edge that challenges comfort zones and expectations. And when the night calls for something spiritual, Bismil’s sufi performance promises a powerful pause. A moment of stillness amid the chaos. As the lights grow brighter and the tempo rises, Belgian EDM artist Romeo Blanco will take over, turning the campus into a high energy playground of sound and movement. These nights at Mood Indigo are not meant to be remembered quietly. They are meant to be felt fully. Beyond music, Mood Indigo carries the excitement of cinema, storytelling, and laughter. Bollywood stars including Rakul Preet Singh, Pulkit Samrat, Vicky Kaushal, Jaideep Ahlawat, Archana Puran Singh, and Kavitha Seth will be making appearances, adding glamour without distance. These moments feel intimate, unscripted, and human. Just like MI itself. Comedy finds its space too, with Rahul Subramanian delivering laughter filled sets that cut through stress and seriousness with ease. At Mood Indigo, even laughter feels collective. What truly defines Mood Indigo is not just who performs or who attends. It is how it makes people feel. It gives students a space to express themselves without judgment. It allows talent to be celebrated loudly. It reminds everyone that creativity thrives when freedom exists. So mark your calendars and gather your friends. From 16th to 18th December, IIT Bombay is where December finds its rhythm. Register now at moodi.org and follow @iitbombay.moodi on Instagram for updates and announcements. • The Skill Of Ageing Gracefully: Secrets From The Land Of Longevity

The Skill Of Ageing Gracefully: Secrets From The Land Of Longevity By Rini Pathak The Skill Of Ageing Gracefully: Secrets From The Land Of Longevity 17 March 2024 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Japan is one of the most futuristic nations in the world. It is a nation with a wealth of things to offer. The list is endless and includes things like modern washrooms, luxurious automobiles, and distinctive cultures. The icing on the cake are the Japanese ideas that change people’s lives for the better. In today’s hectic and fast-paced world, they are indispensable for achieving contentment and tranquility. After all, the life expectancy rate in Japan is the second highest. Surely, they must be taking some steps to achieve such results, right? So, today let us take a tour of Japan’s famous concepts (virtually of course) and understand how these concepts would let us live a happier and successful life which might be a reason for our longevity. IKIGAI: The words, “Iki” and “gai,” which were previously called “kai” and signify “life” and “value” or “worth,” respectively, are the roots of the term “Ikigai.” Originally, the goal of Japanese Ikigai philosophy was to discover one’s actual happiness. According to a contemporary perspective, it is a technique for locating one’s ideal job. By matching one’s passion with what the world needs right now, one may utilize it as a compass that informs one what they are destined to do. SHINRIN-YOKU: Shinrin-yoku, commonly referred to as forest bathing, is a practice that entails submerging oneself in the natural world and inhaling the scents of the forest. It’s thought to improve general wellbeing, elevate mood, and lessen stress. In today’s hectic and technology driven world, we hardly ever have time to disconnect from technological devices and the daily grind. Shinrin-yoku enters the scene here as a readily available, cost-free therapeutic counteragent. WABI-SABI: Do you frequently find it difficult to go on or begin anything new because your default setting is to strive for perfection? Then, the concept of Wabi-Sabi is perfect for you. Wabi-Sabi is the practice of reminding ourselves that nothing in this world is permanent and that striving for perfection is pointless, we must strive to appreciate its inherent beauty and make the greatest possible use of it. HARA HACHI BU: This idea originates from Okinawan culture, where it’s customary to eat until 80% full. In the culture, it is believed that people can prevent overeating and excessive calorie intake by stopping their meals before they are fully satisfied. Hara hachi bu is a technique that can lengthen life and assist in stopping overeating. This technique is thought to improve digestion, help people lose weight, and improve general health. MA: “Ma” denotes the idea of negative space, or the space between things, in Japanese terminology. It is the area that is often left purposefully vacant or uncertain in between things, factors, or times. Ma is the presence of potential and possibility as well as the absence of something. Ma is a refined practice in Japanese culture that enables one to reflect in silence. It improves one’s intuition and cerebral faculties and hence is a physical representation of spirituality. • How Koreans Eat And Drink Their Way To Beautiful Skin

By Anushka Sharma By Anushka Sharma How Koreans Eat And Drink Their Way To Beautiful Skin 20 June 2024 BEAUTY Advertisement Advertisement Koreans are renowned for their glowing, youthful complexions, and it’s no secret that diet plays a significant role in their skincare regimen. While the world often marvels at their intricate beauty routines, the foundation of their enviable skin lies in the foods and drinks they consume daily. From fermented vegetables to soothing teas, Korean cuisine is packed with nutrients that promote healthy, radiant skin. Here’s a closer look at some of the key elements of the Korean diet that contribute to beautiful skin. Kimchi: The Fermented Marvel Kimchi, a staple in Korean households, is a spicy, fermented cabbage dish that offers numerous benefits for the skin. This pungent dish is loaded with garlic, chili, and antioxidants that help fight the aging process and promote an even complexion. Selenium and other nutrients in kimchi enhance skin elasticity and clarity. Eaten with almost every meal, kimchi adds a flavorful punch to dishes while nourishing the skin from within. Despite its strong smell that can dominate your fridge, kimchi is a must-try for anyone looking to improve their skin health naturally. Seaweed Soup (Miyeok Guk): Nutrient-Rich Tradition Seaweed soup, known as Miyeok Guk, is a traditional dish consumed especially during breakfast and on birthdays. This custom stems from the practice of giving new mothers seaweed soup to replenish vital nutrients lost during childbirth. Rich in sulfates, seaweed has a soothing effect on the skin and helps maintain its elasticity. By choosing seaweed soup over sugary birthday treats, Koreans ensure their skin remains youthful and vibrant, even as they celebrate another year. Soybean Soup (Doenjang Jjigae): The Antioxidant Powerhouse Doenjang Jjigae, a beloved soybean soup, is a daily fixture in Korean meals. Made from fermented soybean paste, this soup is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants that protect the skin from UV damage and environmental stressors. The affordability and nutritional benefits of soybeans make this dish a popular choice, proving that effective skincare can also be cost-effective. Incorporating Doenjang Jjigae into your diet can help shield your skin from damage and maintain its natural glow. Barley Tea (Bori Cha): The Circulation Booster Barley tea, or Bori Cha, is a refreshing beverage enjoyed hot in the winter and cold in the summer. Known for its deep, nutty flavor, barley tea is consumed in large quantities by Koreans for its health benefits, particularly for the skin. This tea enhances circulation, which is crucial for keeping the skin firm and promoting cell regeneration. Swapping out your usual coffee for barley tea can significantly benefit your skin, making it a simple yet effective addition to your skincare routine. Fermented Rice Wine (Makgeolli): The Skin Brightener Makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine, is more than just a drink; it's a skincare elixir. Unlike other alcoholic beverages, Makgeolli is rich in vitamin B and amino acids, which help brighten the skin and even out the complexion. It's also beneficial for treating acne. The skincare benefits of Makgeolli have inspired a variety of beauty products, including sheet masks and serums. Enjoying Makgeolli not only adds a touch of indulgence to your meals but also contributes to healthier, more radiant skin. The secret to Koreans’ beautiful skin lies in their dietary choices, which are rich in nutrients that support skin health. From the antioxidant-rich kimchi and nutrient-packed seaweed soup to the circulation-boosting barley tea and skin-brightening Makgeolli, these foods and drinks are integral to maintaining a youthful, radiant complexion. By incorporating these elements into your diet, you can harness the power of Korean cuisine to achieve beautiful skin from the inside out. • Prostitution And Criminalization

SOCIETY by Anushka Singh Prostitution And Criminalization 1 September 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Prostitution being one of the major social ills existing in Indian society, undeniably is a matter of critical concern. It occurs in different forms and its legal status differs from country to country ranging from being an enforced or unenforced crime, to regulated or an unregulated profession. Reflecting differing opinions, the position of prostitution varies widely worldwide. Some believe that paid sex is so entrenched in our society that our focus must be in keeping it upright and unassailable rather than prosecuting it. While some simply perceive the idea of prostitution as a legitimate occupation, others as an institution are the supporters of ‘Nordic Model’ which makes the purchase of sex illegal but decriminalizes the act of selling it. This approach has also been adopted by various countries like Canada, Ireland, Iceland, Norway and France. The juridical position of prostitution has been a subject of grave debate during recent years. And like every debate has, sex work likewise has two ends to it which must be analysed before arriving at a deemed conclusion. The question is, should we legalise it or keep it criminal? Here is a brief to both ends of the debate. Keeping it criminal Even after legalizing prostitution with best intentions of retrenching human trafficking and criminal enterprises, some countries still suffer from illegal counterparts. For example, illegal bordellos still exist in the Netherlands, a country which legalized prostitution in 1988 and prostitutes continue to suffer abuses at the hands of the procurer. Another major argument is, prostitution promotes degrading attitudes toward women and obliquely invites violence against them. The fact that 80% of sex workers are female can not be overlooked and they are more likely to be raped or murdered than any other population because of the malicious behaviour people have towards them. And so by the necessity to protect and save themselves, either from physical harm or destitution, an enormous female contingent of female sex workers fall out of option and throw themselves at the mercy of the men they serve. Cruelly, society often blames women for the violence against them, theorizing how she must have brought the trouble on herself. The only way to combat such attitudes and realities is to increase legal measures against who perpetuate the prostitution industry. Legalizing it Criminalization of prostitution leaves sex workers on the fringes of society, making them vulnerable to violence, poverty and health issues whereas legalization bypasses the most dangerous aspects of prostitution. Decriminalization also allows sex workers to get help from police in incidences of violence. Also, it provides them access to social security and public health care. It has been noted that sexually transmitted infections are statistically lower in areas where prostitution is decriminalized. Legalization also helps to concede that consensual prostitution has a victimless nature. The internet bristle with the testimonials of sex workers evincing their consent on having a career in sex. Along with manifesting their assent, these personalities have also stated the disparity between themselves and those who are browbeaten or compelled into this social evil. Even if the ethical framework of prostitution is not clear, society should avoid binding sex-trade which as a reaction does not harm individuals or the society itself. The ultimate line In either way, prostitution remains to not be an ascendant practice as there are so many prospects and the presence of both willing and unwilling individuals dealing through discrete circumstances, finding their way out somehow.
