  • An Uncontacted Island In India: North Sentinel Island

by Aishwarya An Uncontacted Island In India: North Sentinel Island 10 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement In today’s modern world, we all look out for vacation destinations that are close to nature. Maldives and Mauritius are the two islands that will be there in your travel bucket list. What if we say that, there is an island that is banned for tourists? Well, if you were shocked knowing that, then let us take you through the most isolated island in the world; North Sentinel Island. North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal. It is the part of the Andaman Islands that is voluntarily isolated by its residential tribe. North Sentinel Island is home to the Sentinelese people, who are indigenous people in voluntary isolation. We all love our solitude, but Sentinelese loves their solitude way too much. They are considered to be the only uncontacted tribe in the world. The island is not known to many and the Government of India has also banned tourism over there. Under the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Act of 1956, people are prohibited to visit this island. The North Sentinel Island is protected and looked after by the Government of India. Many attempts to visit this island have resulted in violence. There isn’t much information about the island and the government has decided to let them be isolated only. In 2018, the Government of India excluded 29 islands- including North Sentinel- from the Restricted Area Permit region, in an effort of boosting tourism. In November, the government stated that the relaxation of the prohibition was to allow researchers and anthropologists, with pre-approved clearance, to visit North Sentinel. The anthropologists are fascinated by this island as the Sentinelese have not been studied much before. They are violent with the visitors and hence, we don’t even know the exact size of their population. The relaxation of the prohibition was done in the hopes of knowing them and their culture, but the result of it was something different. We humans always have an attraction toward the unknown, and hence, many people traveled to the island illegally. In 2006, the death of two fishermen, Sundar Raj and Pandit Tiwari was reported. It is said that their boats drifted too close to the North Sentinel Island and the Sentinelese attacked them. In a similar incident, an American Christian missionary, John Allen Chau was killed in the year 2018. The case of John Allen Chau took over the news pretty quickly. The 26-year-old, John, invaded the island illegally, with the motive of spreading Christianity. He went there to preach to them about Jesus and was killed by the Sentinelese on November 17th, 2018. The boatmen who took John over there reported that he saw the tribe dragging John’s dead body to the shore. In the same fashion, in 2006, when Sundar and Pandit were killed, they were buried on the shore of North Sentinel Island. The government authorities excavated one body, with great difficulty, and handed it over to his family. The body of John is, however, not found. The officials have opened a murder case but have not arrested anyone yet. John’s diary also reveals that he knew he would die and he has made a statement saying “don’t excavate my body”. One of the most notable events between outsiders and North Sentinel happened in 1981 when the Primrose cargo ship struck a nearby coral reef- north sentinel is covered with coral reef- shipwrecking sailors for nearly two weeks. The sailors were also attacked by the Sentinelese, and it is also known that they used the ship's debris to make metal tools. There have been more than 11 such violent cases that happened on North Sentinel Island. It is believed that they have their language, Sentinelese. It is an undescribed language and due to the lack of contact, nothing is known of their language and its vitality. After the incidents of violence, India ceased visits in 1997. The first peaceful contact with the Sentinelese was on 4th January 1991. Triloknath, a director of the Anthropological Survey of India, and his colleagues were the first ones to have peaceful contact with them. He also says that the contact didn’t bring much of the secrets out, because they weren’t allowing them to reach them. One more miraculous fact about North Sentinel Island is that it survived the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The Indian government sent some helicopters to see their situation and give them food, but the tribe attacked the helicopter and swayed off the government officials too. While the much-developed cities suffered due to the tsunami, the North Sentinel Island- covered by water on all sides- survived it. Maybe, that is the reason we say that nature protects us when we live with it in alignment. The Sentinelese tribe is known to be the last hunter and gatherer civilization to exist. The government has now banned any tourist visits, respecting their desire to be isolated. It is also said that they are not immune to the pathogens of modern society, which makes them prone to modern-day diseases. While we desire to explore every part of the earth, it is better to leave some of the places on their own; untouched, uncontacted and unknown. BLOB An island that remains uncontacted, unknown till the date. Let’s know about North Sentinel Island, an island that is nonetheless a mystery to the human race. • Palm Islands

by Akash Khatri Palm Islands 1 October 2020 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement One of the country’s most prominent project ever, Dubai’s palm Islands, developed by Nakheel, are the eighth wonder of the world! These man made islands are designed in a palm tree shape and thus got their name from it. The distinctiveness and interesting history behind it grabs the tourist attraction here. One of the most visited destination in Dubai has been admired since long. There are three islands that altogether makes Palm Island, including Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, Palm Deira. Deira is the largest one. Palm Jumeirah It is the only one open to visitors and is also famous for the grand looking hotel, Burj Al Arab. There are residential properties inside Jumeirah too where celebrities or richer people reside in. It was built in the early 21st century and first residents in the buildings arrived in 2007. In the second decade 10,000 people were residing in Jumeirah. It was financed from Dubai’s substantial income from petroleum. Palm Jebel Ali It was the most significant among the three islands when built. It was so large that more than 250,000 people were expected to live there. But it’s an abandoned island as of now because of the deficit economic situation in Dubai. Nakheel has confirmed that it won’t be put to a stop. It’ll continue at some point of time for sure. Palm Deira Deira is the largest of all the islands with an area greater than Paris! It’s been under construction due to the same reason mentioned. When it’ll be completed, The island will consist of residential property, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, clubs, and hospitality offerings. It’s a spectacular with all the luxury and unrealistic units. The idea of building these islands was to fascinate more tourists. That’s why it has everything that a visitor looks for. World-class hotels, entertainment centres, spas and health centres, marinas, water parks, residential villas, shopping malls, cinema multiplexes, diving sites and what not. Beach lovers can’t resist visiting here. People can see the palm shape up close and it looks surreal. One look at it’s structure, which is covered with beachfront hotels from major brands like Atlantis, St. Regis, Sofitel, Langham, W, and Waldorf-Astoria makes it understandable why Dubai is the fourth-most visited place in the world. This engineering project is just as imaginable as it sounds. The project of Palm Jumeirah cost $12 billion which today is the native to 1,500 beachfront mansions with a 6,000 apartments on its trunk. Also 12,000 palm trees were planted in there. These amazing facts about the place makes it more appealing, enchanting and worthwhile. #holidaydestination #Dubai #trip #wanderlust #beaches #travelling #beautifulplaces #islands SEARCH 7 Abandoned Cities In India And Abroad That Are Too Beautiful To Be Forgotten TRAVEL Blue Lagoon – Iceland TRAVEL Palm Islands TRAVEL WORLD PEACE DOME TRAVEL Blood Falls In Antarctica: Explained TRAVEL POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Lakshadweep Is A Heaven In Disguise And Here Is Why 3 April 2024 TRAVEL By Anushka Sharma If Uzbekistan Isn’t On Your Travel List, Here Is Exactly Why It Should Be 21 March 2024 TRAVEL By Anushka Sharma The Fashion Capitals Of Asia: Exploring Style Beyond Borders 19 March 2024 TRAVEL By Anushka Sharma The Best Countries You Should Visit With A Budget Of Less Than A Lakh Rupees 3 March 2024 TRAVEL RELATED POSTS

By Rini Pathak How To Delay Ageing With The Right Products 1 March 2024 LIFESTYLE Advertisement There are certain truths about the lives of human beings that are often hard to hear but are inevitable. • The best picnic spots around the world - that you need to visit

by Aishwarya The best picnic spots around the world - that you need to visit 4 November 2022 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Scotch eggs, cheese, and champagne may sound like the ideal picnic, but add views of a rose garden, the beach, or a wildebeest stampede and it becomes even more spectacular. Picnics are everyone's favourite. So let’s see some of the best places to have your picnic, the next time! Beach picnic in Rapid Bay, Australia: Legend has it that when the explorer Colonel Light landed in Rapid Bay aboard HMS Rapid in 1830, he said he'd scarcely seen a better place, and it's difficult to disagree. The bay's sandy beach is nestled beneath cliffs that overlook the ocean and is only a 90-minute drive from Adelaide on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. The sea is at its warmest between October and May, so you can relax on the beach after feasting on local cheese, bread, and McLaren Vale wine from neighbouring vineyards. You can also snorkel or dive to encounter leafy sea dragons beneath the bay's jetty, as well as cowfish, pufferfish, and the rare bull ray in the nearby coral. Tanzanian bush picnic at Sanctuary Kusini: What does a picnic while viewing a wildebeest stampede sound like? Sanctuary Kusini is Tanzania's only permanent camp in the distant south of the Serengeti, overlooking grassy plains teeming with predators all year. You may have a picnic in the main lodge, which is built around a cluster of kopjes (rocky outcrops), giving you front-row seats to the Great Migration. Alternatively, you can get a hamper and have a bush picnic. Wildlife picnic in Kumana National Park, Sri Lanka: Set up your picnic basket on the banks of the river that flows through Kumana National Park, an hour's drive from Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka's east coast. As you sip your Ceylon tea, you may notice deer, wild buffalo, elephants, or leopards quenching their thirst in the river. Alternatively, spread down a blanket in Kumana Villu, a 202-hectare mangrove swamp where painted storks feed their fledglings in the treetops and pheasant-tailed jacana swim about floating nests. To avoid the annual rain, the area is best explored between April and September. Ayu in the Wild, a luxury tour company, creates customised tours with a focus on ecological and slow travel - and it can even prepare a picnic. Cherry blossom picnic in Tohoku, Japan: Try digging into an obento lunch box with a glass of sake at a table amid hundreds of pink cherry blossoms if you thought a picnic in a rose garden was romantic. Tohoku Local Secret Tours will arrange a private hanami (flower viewing) picnic on the grounds of the 1,200-year-old Shiogama Shrine in Sendai, in the Tohoku area of northern Japan, and a local musician will serenade you on a three-stringed shamisen. After your picnic, you can visit the shrine grounds. Rose garden picnic in Sacramento, California: Sacramento, known as the Farm-to-Fork Capital, is home to California's largest farmers market, so stock up on fresh vegetables and wine from the adjacent Napa and Sonoma Valleys. After you've finished your picnic, you can relax on the seats at McKinley Park Rose Garden in the city's east, which has over 1,000 rose bushes and tree roses. Every year, new types are sown. Visit between March and May to view the blossoms at their peak. What does a picnic while viewing a wildebeest stampede sound like? • Kyle Wiens’ surreal hiring policies!

by Aparajita Jaiswal Kyle Wiens’ surreal hiring policies! 27 July 2020 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Kyle Wiens, the CEO of iFixit as well as founder of Dozuki, talks about his hiring policies and especially stresses on basic grammar skills. He believes that not knowing the basic grammar reflects on the applicants learning curve. “Grammar is my litmus test. All applicants say they’re detail-oriented; I just make my employees prove it.” Grammar is a basic requirement for all companies. Wiens, stresses on the fact that he may seem slightly harsh in his hiring policies as grammar may not have anything to do with the applicant’s qualification for the job. The applicant may otherwise be qualified but their lack of grammar skills shows their lack of a present mind. Although he does not seem to agree with Lynne Truss who thinks that people who mix up their itses “deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave.” He just thinks that they should be passed over for a job. A mere comma can make all the difference in the world and is he wrong? Everyone who applies for a position at either of Wiens’ companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a mandatory grammar test as they write for a living. iFixit is the world’s largest online repair manual, and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it only makes sense that Wiens made a preemptive strike against groan-worthy grammar errors. Writing isn’t in the official job description of most people in the office and yet they give out grammar tests to everybody, including their salespeople, operations staff, and the programmers. Kyle Wiens may go as far as to pass on a great programmer who cannot write, even in this hyper-competitive market. He says, “I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing — like stocking shelves or labeling parts. “In the same vein, programmers who pay attention to how they construct written language also tend to pay a lot more attention to how they code. You see, at its core, code is prose.” Wiens reckons to the belief that the devil is in the details. “In fact, when it comes to my whole business, details are everything. And I guarantee that even if other companies aren’t issuing grammar tests, they pay attention to sloppy mistakes on résumés. After all, sloppy is as sloppy does.” Wiens cannot stress enough that applicants who do not think writing is important are likely to think lots of other salient things also are not indispensable. #KyleWiensCEOofiFixitFounderofDozukiiFixitDozukiWriting SEARCH Countdown To History: Omega Unveils Paris 2024 Olympics Countdown Clock And Special Edition Timepiece LIFESTYLE Juggling Law And Fashion: The Inspirational Journey Of Riddhi Nahata, A Multifaceted Influencer LIFESTYLE Join Shruti Yogi On Her Enchanting Journey From Kumkum Bhagya To Wanderlust Saga LIFESTYLE Personal Growth And Relatability: Ishita Khanna's Key To Influencer Success LIFESTYLE 6 Disadvantages Of Being Pretty LIFESTYLE POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Unveiling the Myth: Does Pretty Privilege Truly Exist 17 April 2024 LIFESTYLE By Anushka Sharma How Do Some People Not Get Acne No Matter What 15 April 2024 LIFESTYLE By Anushka Sharma Kate Middleton’s Story Has Only Gotten Worse With Time 18 March 2024 LIFESTYLE By Rini Pathak The Skill Of Ageing Gracefully: Secrets From The Land Of Longevity 17 March 2024 LIFESTYLE RELATED POSTS Advertisement

  • Cancel Culture

by Akash Khatri Cancel Culture 1 November 2020 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Cancel culture, a social media phenomenon where active social media users seek to remove the clout of a celebrity who says or does something offensive by ‘cancelling’ them. Basically, the ‘cancel’ here means to cancel out or end a person’s career in reaction to his or her unacceptable behaviour or action. For instance, if there is a celebrity or any public figure who makes a misogynistic, racist, casteist, or sexist statement or commits an act of sexual crime, there could be calls to boycott the actor’s films and other works, exile him or her from all public events and disconnect the person from all the social alliances. As a result, the person is ‘cancelled’ culturally, socially, economically and politically. There are two types of cancel culture, first one a call-out culture. Here, the responsible individual is mortified publicly on social media for his or her statements and the resulting outcry hold them accountable for their fallacy. The second variant is more serious. Here, the celebrity is called out on social media and a larger mass boycotts his or her products or services, eventually bringing a full stop to their careers. Most of the times it gets much wider and substantial or controversial but the immense recognition cancel culture enjoys, especially among teenagers and young adults, makes it one of the most controlling movements in recent times. One of the main critiques of cancel culture is that it’s making people more bigoted, quick to judge and banish those who even slightly disagree with them. Cancel culture doesn’t leave any room for constructive discourse because social media users often deliver a quick decision, based on a snap judgment, to a celebrity they view as offensive — leaving no opportunity for them to put forward their explanation on their act and make their case against their own ‘cancellation.’ But people tend to forget — whether a celebrity is canceled or not, it is up to the celebrity themself, not on those wanting to cancel them. Though targeting someone will not just affect them, but their mental health and the livelihood of many related to them, and that’s not just. However, ending someone’s career completely is easier said than done. Not many entities have had their careers completely shut down due to the negative views on the internet. Actor and activist Jameela Jamil, has said that this phenomenon is a “pointless waste of time.” But, then again, the term is utilsed among so many, that to figure out if the phenomenon is negative or positive have been made indistinct. The principal questions are: Has social media simply given another name to something that is going to exist for a lifetime? Does this phenomenon really exist when cancelling someone doesn’t mostly work forever? Does the idea of being cancelled stop awful content? Or is it just another trend that is being followed blindly? • The story of the suicide forest: Japan’s suicide forest

by Aishwarya The story of the suicide forest: Japan’s suicide forest 1 November 2022 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement What does come to your mind, when you hear the word “forest”? Well, for obvious reasons, you would think about lush green space, a ton of trees, breezy and cool, and a very peaceful place. A forest that isn’t known for its peaceful atmosphere, but rather a disturbing truth, is a weird thing, right? There is a forest in Japan that has the reputation and recognition for having the second-highest number of suicides happening there. It gets even more spooky when the locals over there claim the forest to be possessed by the spirits of the suicide victims. This is the story of a forest in Japan, named Aokigahara Forest, located northwest of Mount Fuji. The entrance of the forest warns its visitors, to “Think carefully about your children, your family. Your life is a precious gift from your parents. Quietly think once more about your parents, siblings or children. Please don’t suffer alone, and first, reach out.” These are the words that are adorned at the entrance of Aokigahara Forest. This forest is globally known as the Suicide Forest. It is the second most famous place for suicides, the first being the Golden Gate Bridge. The forest is spread across a huge area of 35 sq km, giving it the name “Sea of Trees”. It is believed that getting lost in the forest is a very common thing here, and the way out of it is an impossible mission. With a story so dark, it is pretty common to have a reputation for it being possessed. According to Japanese mythology, the forest is said to be home to Yurei- which means ghosts of the dead. As per the official statements , around 105 bodies were discovered in the forest, in the year 2003. Most of the bodies were severely decomposed and/or eaten by wild animals. Due to its story, many Japanese spiritualists believe that the suicides have permeated the trees, which results in paranormal activities in the forest. People often lose their way inside the forest, as the technologies and devices such as compasses and mobile phones fail here. It is due to the deposits of magnetic iron created by the volcanic salt in this region. The devices start behaving weirdly and show wrong directions. Now, this is the reason, it's an impossible mission to find your way out of this forest. People also believe that the bodies of suicide victims should not be left alone in the forest. They believe that it is bad luck for the victims and often their spirits cry and scream for help, and also move their bodies. Now, we don’t know how true it is, but the belief of some people cannot be ignored just because it isn’t proven. Keeping this in the mind, the forest workers bring them back and keep them in a special room at the local forest police station. Many experts have researched why people choose to die in this forest. Almost three decades ago, a Japanese psychiatrist interviewed some Aokigahara suicide survivors and wrote that a key reason for their selection was that “they believed that they would be able to die successfully without being noticed.” Another psychiatrist, Dr Yoshitomo Takahashi, believed that movies and media reports have played a role in influencing people. He also said that they might have wanted to “share the same place with others and belong to the same group”. The nation has been taking steps to curb suicides, over the years. Security cameras are being set at the entrances, hoping to track those who walk inside, according to Imasa Watanabe of the Yamanashi prefectural government. The local government has also opted for suicide prevention methods, such as raising the bridge rails' height, having volunteered to talk to and convince suicidal visitors, increasing police patrolling and discouraging movies and TV shows to not promote the forest as a suicide forest. With a reputation so dark, Aokigahara Forest has failed to be peaceful and beautiful, as a forest should be. We need to know that, suicide doesn’t end your problem but rather removes you and replaces your family & loved ones, in your problem. There is a forest in Japan that has the reputation and recognition for having the second-highest number of suicides happening there.
