- Going Green, One Stitch At A Time
Going Green, One Stitch At A Time by Anushka Sharma Going Green, One Stitch At A Time 24 April 2023 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Isha Nabar’s sense of fashion is eternal, because it is ethical. The very multi-talented fashion designer “Isha Nabar” uses a variety of hand stitched techniques on the hand woven fabric of khadi to do her bit for the betterment of the environment. Isha , an accomplished fashion designer of Indian origin, is based in New York and commenced with her multi-disciplinary learning at the Parsons School of Design, New York. Her niches of interest included fashion, business and jewellery design, the knowledge of which has actually given her quite an edge as a designer. Her much discussed initiative, ‘Charkhara’ (colloquially translated as wheel - 'Charkha' and green - 'Hara') is based on the design of a sustainable garment that is completely hand-stitched, through the usage of a hand spun fabric that is ‘Khadi’. This fabric, constituted of natural fibre, has played a significant role in the cultural, political, and socio-economic past of the country as many of us know. It was introduced by Mahatma Gandhi during the colonial rule in India, when he himself spun the yarn on the wheel to instil a sense of self-reliance amongst people. Khadi is since then spun on the ‘Charkha’ (the spinning wheel on which the yarn is hand spun.) The Charkha, with 24 spokes, which is also present on the Indian flag, is a symbolic representation of the hours of the day and the value of time. Taking this forward, Isha’s garment has 24 unique joinery techniques which beautifully acknowledge the efforts of those who spin the wheel painstakingly for 24 hours a day. The key intention behind this initiative is to avoid the use of machinery altogether in order to make a truly sustainable garment. She has therefore innovated these non-intrusive and hand crafted joinery systems of a wheel and a coin - a ‘paisa’ (equivalent to a penny) to construct the entire piece. One can spin the wheel to adjust the fit of the garment, while pulling closer the coin. The ‘paisa’ is meant to be a reminder of the minimal wages of the artisans. Isha explains “With this project, I hope to raise awareness on the khadi fabric, the negligible pay of the khadi artisans and the laborious process of hand spinning this fabric.” She wants to increase its perceived value and shift the mind-sets of the audience to more conscious consumption for a greener tomorrow. By using a hand woven fabric like khadi, along with specialised hand stitched techniques, she brings to the forefront the possibility of a process that is entirely sustainable in not only producing a garment but also in its end use. Her thoughtful and intentional design now lends the wearer the possibility of draping the exquisite Khadi fabric in multiple stunning and fashion-forward forms of outerwear. Isha’s design is disruptive, shows brilliance in its concept, is innovative and most importantly, has a deep emphasis towards responsible fashion. In a complex and evolving industry, ‘Charkhara’ is a conversation starter and clearly representative of her unique and novice design ideology, which is going beyond the mere aesthetics and functionality of fashion. It also explores the realm of sustainable material development and empowers the artisanal communities. Isha’s superlative skills, technical expertise and intelligence is well displayed in the complex joinery system which holds the fabric together. The final outcome was an outstanding, one-of-a-kind couture piece, born from the harmonising generational heritage with some unmistakably luxurious silhouettes, whilst carrying a profound message. This collection stays true to the roots of Khadi, thus retaining its rawness and presenting itself as an exhibit that is earthy and tonal. “The fabric itself is so well-worked, I wanted to let it shine and give it the stage it deserves” Isha tells us. There is nothing more captivating in fashion than the synergy of a sense of play and a purpose, which Isha has exuded graciously! She brings a point of view to the table that is rare to come by. Ironically maximizing a sense of purpose within a minimalistic framework, ‘Charkhara’ tells a story of rich artistry in a way that repositions the Khadi fabric with refinement and finesse. Isha is internationally recognized for her distinctive skills and ingenious design thinking, resulting in her bagging the AATCC Foundation Jasani Textile Scholarship and being a finalist for UK’s Creative Conscience Award. Isha has also worked with fashion houses like Tanya Taylor, Oscar de la Renta and Derek Lam in New York and Masaba and Vogue in India, giving her global exposure and fuelling her creativity as an artist. She is a new age designer to watch out for with her aesthetic sensibilities, critical thinking and views on a greener tomorrow. And she believes in getting there one stitch at a time! - China Table Restaurant At Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok: A Dim Sum Story At Dusk
By Shriniwas Kodape China Table Restaurant At Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok: A Dim Sum Story At Dusk 7 September 2025 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The rain was light but insistent, the kind that makes Bangkok’s streets gleam like a black lacquered table. From the lobby of the Radisson Blu Plaza , the city outside looked like it was holding its breath. I took the elevator up, chasing the promise of steam, ginger, and the soft clink of porcelain. China Table welcomes without fanfare. It draws you in with the quiet confidence of a place that knows exactly what it’s doing. Inside, the world softened with dark wood, muted gold, and that warm, almost conspiratorial lighting that flatters everyone at the table. Somewhere in the kitchen, woks hissed, the air fragrant with star anise and soy. The dim sum arrived first, steaming baskets cradled like secrets. Har gow, so delicate you could trace the pink curve of shrimp inside; siu mai crowned with a scatter of roe; buns that broke open to reveal molten custard, sweet enough to stop you mid-sentence. Every bite felt precise, not fussy, just intentional, as though someone had edited away everything that didn’t belong. Then came the Peking duck. It unfolded with a sense of tradition, each step deliberate with the paper-thin pancakes, the glossy hoisin, the skin that shattered with a sound so soft it was almost a whisper. Sweet, salty, smoky, all in balance, all exactly where it should be. Seafood followed with the quiet elegance of a tide coming in. Poached grouper swimming in a ginger broth that warmed without overwhelming. Scallops seared just long enough to catch a kiss of wok smoke. Crab fried rice, indulgent but somehow clean, the grains separate and glistening. By the time dessert landed chilled mango sago, sesame balls with their crisp shells giving way to red bean silk, the city outside had slipped fully into night. The rain had stopped, but I wasn’t in any hurry to leave. China Table isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a place to settle into. To let the night breathe between courses, to let flavors take their time telling you where they came from. At dusk, with steam curling above the table and the lights of Bangkok just out of reach, it becomes its own small world. One you’ll want to return to, even if only to hear the hiss of the woks again. - Cloud Kitchens are the new buzz
by Rupashree Ravi Cloud Kitchens are the new buzz 14 August 2022 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The future of cloud kitchens looks promising and brighter than ever. In the last two decades, we have seen people dining out more often for a change from home-cooked meals. But in recent times, there’s been a gradual shift to ordering food at home and an increase in take-out options. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic changed the complete economics of food and restaurant businesses. While dine-in trends will continue to exist, the industry is focusing a lot more on food deliveries. With just three ingredients – a great menu, a kitchen space, and smart packaging, you can create and run a successful cloud kitchen. Its simplicity and low-cost model have pushed hundreds of people over the last two years to jump onto the bandwagon. The domestic cloud kitchens market is expected to grow from $400 million in 2019 to $2 billion by 2024. Cloud kitchens are leading from the front to bring about this change. But what exactly are cloud kitchens? Unlike brick-and-mortar restaurants, cloud kitchens don’t have a dine-in facility. They take orders via apps, in-house or through delivery partners like Swiggy and Zomato and operate single or multiple food brands. A booming cloud kitchen in Delhi The perfect recipe to run a successful cloud kitchen is by selling an amazing food product. Cloud kitchens are popular because of the food they offer. Unlike a restaurant with a great dining experience where people go for the service and ambience, a cloud kitchen’s only value is its food. So, the food on the menu is the most important ingredient of a cloud kitchen, and not working on the product well enough and creating a good menu will most certainly not work. Cloud kitchen owners should work on their food to make it stand out. They should master the recipe and find a niche over their competitors. Cloud kitchen rely on their delivery and take-out format For cloud kitchens to be able to sustain, they need to keep their costs low. They must be careful not to spend too much money on packaging. The cost of packaging for cloud kitchens should not be more than 5 per cent of total expenses. Kitchen experts suggest that the cost of goods sold should ideally be around 25 per cent of total costs. Although food packaging is one of the most important parts of a cloud kitchen, one has to ensure that the packaging ensures safe travel of the food from the kitchen to the consumer, while also offering hygiene and taste. Packaging is also a great way to market your cloud kitchen The biggest mistake that cloud kitchens do is operating 6-7 brands from one location. When there are 10 different cuisines in one kitchen, the manpower has to be trained specifically. The equipment used for one cuisine might not work for the other. That’s why a lot of cloud kitchens have a problem making money. Being particular about locations can be a bad decision as Profitable cloud kitchens can flourish even in tier 2 cities more than in fancy urban hubs. So, what’s fuelling this growth in cloud kitchens? In India, a person on an average orders 6-7 meals per month at home, which is far lower than the global average of 16 orders a month. Hence, the scope to expand this segment is huge and it is important that those looking to start a successful venture or business capitalise on this opportunity. - Bangkok Under My Skin: The Mantra Etched By Arjan Neng
Bangkok Under My Skin: The Mantra Etched By Arjan Neng By Shriniwas Kodape Bangkok Under My Skin: The Mantra Etched By Arjan Neng 28 July 2025 LIFESTYLE Advertisement It was the kind of Bangkok morning that smells like motorbike oil, incense smoke, and wet concrete—the kind where time slips sideways, and your hangover negotiates with the gods. I took the alley like I was stepping into a fever dream—barefoot monks brushing past neon signs, the street food vendors already yelling, the city already sweating. Somewhere deeper in the maze of On Nut, I found him. Arjan Neng . Not a man. Not quite a myth either. Just a calm force sitting on a tiger pelt, like the morning was waiting for him to speak first. This was my fourteenth tattoo. I didn’t come for the design. I came for the surrender. The ritual. The silence. The Sak Yant . I'd heard stories— Bourdain’s voice lingering in my head like distant thunder. Not for the camera, but for the truth. The raw, old magic of it all. Inside the modest temple room, candles flickered in front of golden effigies. His students moved wordlessly around him, preparing ink, checking offerings, lighting incense that smelled like molasses and rain. No needles buzzing here. Just bamboo. Fire. Breath. A monk's whisper and a master’s hand. I handed over flowers, incense, and cigarettes—standard offerings, but not transactional. You don’t pay for a Sak Yant. You offer. You don’t demand. You accept. You sit still and trust. Arjan Neng didn’t ask what I wanted. He placed his hand on my arm and closed his eyes. I didn’t flinch. I had thirteen tattoos already—some tribal, some absurd, some forgotten. But this one was different. It wasn’t about art. It wasn’t even about pain. It was about letting go. The sak—the sacred ink—is mixed with oils, herbs, even snake venom or bone dust, depending on the lineage. The yant—the yantra—is ancient geometry meets prayer. Not decorative. Protective. Guiding. A spiritual circuit board etched into skin. He began. The bamboo rod moved fast and deliberate, its tip striking with a rhythm older than language. Tap. Tap. Tap. It didn’t hurt like a machine. It hurts like poetry being drilled into your soul. My skin opened and bled under his hands, and he chanted in Pali with a low, looping cadence that made the room feel like it was spinning just slightly off-axis. I didn’t know what he was inscribing. I didn't want to know yet. That was the point. This wasn’t a tattoo you pick off a wall. This was one the master chose for you. A mantra. A map. Through the haze, I caught flashes of his own journey— Arjan Neng had trained under revered monks deep in the countryside, learning the sacred geometry and invocations that stretch back centuries. His lineage traces through old jungle temples and battlefield monks who inked warriors before war. This wasn’t street mysticism. It was scripture written in flesh. He finished without ceremony. Just a nod. My arm throbbed, blood mixed with black ink trailing down my elbow like a signature. One of his disciples cleaned it, then placed a square of gold leaf on the fresh wound. Not for decoration—for blessing. Then came the final chant, the activation. Without that, the Sak Yant is just a tattoo. And then… silence. Not awkward silence. Not temple silence. Just peace. Out in the alley again, the city resumed its riot. Tuk-tuks screeched, dogs barked, the skyline hissed in the heat. But I moved through it differently now—like a line had been drawn between me and the chaos. A mantra lived on my arm. Not a tiger, not a demon, not some Instagrammable charm. A sacred formula Arjan Neng had chosen just for me. For protection, maybe. Or clarity. Or balance. Who knows? You don’t always need to understand the fire to feel its warmth. Later that night, I lit a cigarette on my hotel balcony, Bangkok flickering below me like a faulty neon sign. The tattoo still burned, but it wasn’t painful anymore. It was a memory. It was a presence. It was Bangkok under my skin. And for the first time in a long while, I didn’t need to ask why. - Simulation Theory: What if we were just illusions?
SOCIETY by Akash Khatri Simulation Theory: What if we were just illusions? 1 November 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement What if our reality was just an illusion? What if our truths about existence are nothing but a myth? The universe is nothing but just a mirror facing another mirror! Like a dream inside a dream! “Simulation theory” is a current trending topic, many tags this as a conspiracy theory. The modern history of this mind-boggling theory started in the year 2003 with one publication by an Oxford Professor named Nick Bostrom and the paper that opened the gates of our curiosity regarding “Simulation theory” was “Are You Living in a Computer Simulation”? As per him, we are already in simulation, and with the possibilities of advances in virtual reality, we will (the simulated creatures) will create our own simulations and gradually the only civilization that will sustain would be simulated one! The three main points from his speech were: Civilization will come to an end before we get to the next level i.e. post-human level where we can create our own designed simulations. We developed the capability of creating “simulation”, but we decided not to use it yet, thinking (perhaps) that it is unethical or against the morality to do so! We are probably living in a simulation. In the recent era, many famous personalities have also become obsessed with the fact that maybe we are nothing but just fabricated or coded by super-human beings or super-coders who are monitoring every move of ours and to some extent controlling the way we are behaving! We are nothing but just a part of the virtual simulations in a mega computer! The Déjà vu we experience is nothing but just a glitch in the matrix or in simpler terms “coding errors”! Perhaps that is why sometimes we feel these uncanny eyes are following us or watching us out of nowhere! We cannot really find who is making us feel watched over, but we get the feeling for sure! Now let us talk about tech visionaries. Do they believe in this theory? The answer is YES! The tech visionaries and futurists do not believe in the old idea of Newton where they said that the creation of the Universe was simply by an accidental natural phenomenon. Most of today’s visionaries try to see the creation of the Universe as a simulation which was aided by super-intelligence. One of the quotes by Elon Musk regarding “Simulation Theory” that went viral was: “Given that we’re clearly on a trajectory to have games that are indistinguishable from reality and those games could be played on any set-top box or any PC, and there would probably be billions of computer or set-top boxes, it would seem to follow that the odds we are in base reality are one in billions.” But there are few scientists and techies who have totally dismissed the idea saying this whole theory is not even scientific in the first place! Why should we be bothered to know whether we are living in a simulation or not? Not only because people are crazily discussing about this topic lately but to know and acknowledge the truth! Why we should find out the real answer to this theory is to find out our realities so that we can survive if the need arises ever in the future! #Oxford #illusion #Simulationtheory #Reality #supercomputers #dejavu #Conspiracytheory #ElonMask SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world?
