  • An Uncontacted Island In India: North Sentinel Island

by Aishwarya by Aishwarya An Uncontacted Island In India: North Sentinel Island 10 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement In today’s modern world, we all look out for vacation destinations that are close to nature. Maldives and Mauritius are the two islands that will be there in your travel bucket list. What if we say that, there is an island that is banned for tourists? Well, if you were shocked knowing that, then let us take you through the most isolated island in the world; North Sentinel Island. North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal. It is the part of the Andaman Islands that is voluntarily isolated by its residential tribe. North Sentinel Island is home to the Sentinelese people, who are indigenous people in voluntary isolation. We all love our solitude, but Sentinelese loves their solitude way too much. They are considered to be the only uncontacted tribe in the world. The island is not known to many and the Government of India has also banned tourism over there. Under the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Act of 1956, people are prohibited to visit this island. The North Sentinel Island is protected and looked after by the Government of India. Many attempts to visit this island have resulted in violence. There isn’t much information about the island and the government has decided to let them be isolated only. In 2018, the Government of India excluded 29 islands- including North Sentinel- from the Restricted Area Permit region, in an effort of boosting tourism. In November, the government stated that the relaxation of the prohibition was to allow researchers and anthropologists, with pre-approved clearance, to visit North Sentinel. The anthropologists are fascinated by this island as the Sentinelese have not been studied much before. They are violent with the visitors and hence, we don’t even know the exact size of their population. The relaxation of the prohibition was done in the hopes of knowing them and their culture, but the result of it was something different. We humans always have an attraction toward the unknown, and hence, many people traveled to the island illegally. In 2006, the death of two fishermen, Sundar Raj and Pandit Tiwari was reported. It is said that their boats drifted too close to the North Sentinel Island and the Sentinelese attacked them. In a similar incident, an American Christian missionary, John Allen Chau was killed in the year 2018. The case of John Allen Chau took over the news pretty quickly. The 26-year-old, John, invaded the island illegally, with the motive of spreading Christianity. He went there to preach to them about Jesus and was killed by the Sentinelese on November 17th, 2018. The boatmen who took John over there reported that he saw the tribe dragging John’s dead body to the shore. In the same fashion, in 2006, when Sundar and Pandit were killed, they were buried on the shore of North Sentinel Island. The government authorities excavated one body, with great difficulty, and handed it over to his family. The body of John is, however, not found. The officials have opened a murder case but have not arrested anyone yet. John’s diary also reveals that he knew he would die and he has made a statement saying “don’t excavate my body”. One of the most notable events between outsiders and North Sentinel happened in 1981 when the Primrose cargo ship struck a nearby coral reef- north sentinel is covered with coral reef- shipwrecking sailors for nearly two weeks. The sailors were also attacked by the Sentinelese, and it is also known that they used the ship's debris to make metal tools. There have been more than 11 such violent cases that happened on North Sentinel Island. It is believed that they have their language, Sentinelese. It is an undescribed language and due to the lack of contact, nothing is known of their language and its vitality. After the incidents of violence, India ceased visits in 1997. The first peaceful contact with the Sentinelese was on 4th January 1991. Triloknath, a director of the Anthropological Survey of India, and his colleagues were the first ones to have peaceful contact with them. He also says that the contact didn’t bring much of the secrets out, because they weren’t allowing them to reach them. One more miraculous fact about North Sentinel Island is that it survived the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The Indian government sent some helicopters to see their situation and give them food, but the tribe attacked the helicopter and swayed off the government officials too. While the much-developed cities suffered due to the tsunami, the North Sentinel Island- covered by water on all sides- survived it. Maybe, that is the reason we say that nature protects us when we live with it in alignment. The Sentinelese tribe is known to be the last hunter and gatherer civilization to exist. The government has now banned any tourist visits, respecting their desire to be isolated. It is also said that they are not immune to the pathogens of modern society, which makes them prone to modern-day diseases. While we desire to explore every part of the earth, it is better to leave some of the places on their own; untouched, uncontacted and unknown. BLOB An island that remains uncontacted, unknown till the date. Let’s know about North Sentinel Island, an island that is nonetheless a mystery to the human race. • Black Hole Theory

SOCIETY by Akash Khatri Black Hole Theory 1 October 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement If what happens beyond universe fascinates you then this article is for you! “Black Hole”, “Warm Hole” these are few of the scientific terms that recently became famous, thanks to the sci-fi series and films! But have you ever delved into the reality check of these theories? If not, no worries! We will be talking about the theories and facts related to Black hole right here in this article. “Black Hole” – the enigma that this term has! Who first predicted the “Black Hole” theory? The human genius Albert Einstein explained about the existence of “Black Hole” long back in 1916 in his work “General Theory of Relativity”. But he never named it as “Black Hole”. It was more of a prediction than a theory. Want to know a fun fact? Einstein himself never believed that such an object could exist in the outer space! Then who coined this name? It was American astronomer John Wheeler who coined the term “Black Hole” in the year 1967. But even till that time, nobody could find a trace of black hole. When we got know that black holes REALLY exist? The first ever black hole was discovered in the year 1971 and soon the world acknowledged the existence of black hole in real. What exactly is a Black Hole? Black hole is a densely compact object that does not let anything pass through it, even light. It has immense gravitational pull. Why this has so much of gravitational pull? When matter is squeezed into a tiny space it is bound to have such kind of gravitational pull! And black hole is a sheer black space in universe which can’t be seen with naked eyes. How black holes are formed? When a star runs out of fuel, it dies and gets converted into a “black hole. A space where only gravitational pull is left. No spark-No shine-No light! Are there only one kind of black hole? No, there are three kinds of black holes (discovered so far): 1. Steller Black Holes 2. Supermassive Black Holes 3. Intermediate Black Holes What did Stephen Hawking contribute about this topic Black Hole? In 1974, Stephen Hawking made a prediction that black holes eventually evaporate entirely (Though this theory is yet to be physically proved in real!!). Another interesting theory explained by Hawking is “Spaghettification”. This theory says, if by default, an object is trapped in a black hole then due to its exceptional gravitational pull the object would be stretched like a Spaghetti from head to toe, vertically! There is no end on the number of theories that this enigmatic topic has! #blackhole #Hawking #spaghettification #theories SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world? • Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress

Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress by Aparajita Jaiswal Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress 30 June 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement In a freewheel chat with Neha Pande and Aparajita Jaiswal, Madhura Naik shares her journey in the acting industry. She is a brilliant actress, model and proud brand owner who has appeared in popular shows such as Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, Hum Ne Li Hai- Shapath, Tumhari Pakhi, Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh Piyaji and many more. She is an extremely hardworking, optimistic and creatively talented sensation who is not just an amazing actress but also someone who is an inspiration for the youth. Born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh; Madhura has been in the industry since 2007. Wanting to first be a Genetic engineer, Madhura moved to Bombay and has a degree in economics and Law. “Being an actress was never planned for me. I got discovered in my college campus for Universal and one thing led to the other.” For Madhura hardwork is the key ingredient for anyone. “I believe that every role I have played has had a memory for me. I was attached to Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani because we became a family on set and all of us are still great friends. It was basically coming on the set and having fun. I was just a kid, probably seventeen or eighteen, while shooting it.” “From 2020 a typical day in my life starts with washing vessels and cooking in the morning. I work during the day. In the evening I like to concentrate on my fitness and at night I am usually chilling with my friends” Madhura says. “ I had to learn how to cook on a stove for ‘Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh Piyaji’. “I love cooking and I think in the lockdown I discovered cooking all over again” she told us. Madhura has been working for ‘The Ghost Thesis’ for an Amazon Web Series which will be released so keep an eye out for that. “When it comes to T.V I’ve worked with Star Plus, UTV, Sony channel, Life OK, Star One. It has been a great experience working with these brands and production houses. As far as fashion brands are concerned one of my most memorable experiences is working with Baume Mercier in Paris. I was very young when I was living in Paris so that would always hold a special place in my heart,” she said. Madhura is an extremely creative individual. “I like to create new things. The monotony gets to me sometimes so I feel it is important to reinvent myself every now and then. That is something that is constant about me and keep up with the upcoming trends and keep learning new things.” Madhura also usually tends to improvise slightly when she cannot relate to the dialogues of the script. As a kid Madhura aspired to be a genetic engineer but after she ended up in Mumbai she was discovered on her college campus for a music video with Universal and one thing led to another. “There is a huge difference working as a tv actress and a movie actress,” she says. “For tv sometimes you end up working fourteen hours a day. Films usually wrap up in fourth five days or sixty days whereas tv series go on for years on end. It’s a completely different ball game on tv because you have to put in a lot of hardwork and time. Sometimes the content you’re shooting is scheduled to release the very next day so you’re almost on real time. The pressure is far more on tv.” Madhura stresses that hardwork is the key point for success in this industry. “I wish I had guidance as to what projects to pick up and which projects to refuse when I was starting off in this industry because I did not have a career plan. I wish today if I was starting off, I wish I had somebody to guide me on which projects to concentrate on and how to go about films as I did not have a film background.” Madhura has created her own brand Lady M as she has always been inclined towards fashion. When asked what inspired her to dip her feet into fashion and creating her own brand she said, “I always like to dress well and see others dressed well and I feel it inspires you as a person when you’re having a bad day but when you step into the right shoes and clothes you feel really good about yourself. Fashion is not just about wearing good clothes but feeling good while you wear them. I wanted to also introduce new trends to my close friends and the actors but also it is also for the masses. I would love to also dip my feet into the makeup industry but fashion is more my thing than makeup.” Every role I’ve played has had a memory for me. Madhura did an advertisement in association with Bindass tv for PETA with Ashmit Patel against caging birds. “It was for a very good cause and I am completely against caging birds because their first instinct is to fly and it is very sad to have their first instinct being taken away from them. I feel sad seeing birds in cages and I would still like to talk about this because I want people to be aware of what they are doing when they are caging birds. The response to this ad was good and I feel like at least my fans would listen to me and not cage birds.” Madhura continues to work with PETA. “Whenever I see an animal suffering on the roads I always call up PETA and the team is very kind to take them in and take care of them. Madhura has played both roles, protagonist and antagonist. “There’s a vast difference while playing the two roles. When you’re playing the antagonist you have so much to explore because the character has so many shades but when you’re playing a positive role there is just one boring side to the character. I personally prefer playing negative roles. Acting is all about how you train your mind. You just have to become that person so I do not think it is hard for any actor to pretend to be someone else and be in a character’s shoes.” The most challenging part of the job, Madhura says, are the long hours because you don’t have a life and balancing your work life and professional life is crucial. “From morning to evening you’re engaged in the shoot and then when you’re back you’re so tired that you sleep and the next morning when you wake up you’re again gearing up for the shoot. People really need to know the hard work that goes behind the glamour. They just see the glamour and the exotic destinations. What most people do not realise is that while shooting we do not have time to explore cities even while shooting in Paris or London. I start my day in front of the camera and end my day in front of the camera.” Her biggest inspiration is the hard work that Beyoncé puts into her work. “I always find Beyoncé to be a big inspiration because of the hard work that she puts into doing anything that she does, the process of creating from scratch to releasing the final video. She is always on her toes, always working round the clock and she makes it look effortless. She inspires her team also to work that hard so the blood and sweat that goes into her work is a true inspiration,” she says. “As an actress I find Deepika Padukone to be an inspiration as she always gets her characters point on and as a model I find Bella hadid an inspiration as Victoria’s Secret models put in a lot of effort into their bodies. The kind of training that they go through before going on the ramp is not easy. They play all sorts of sports and are grilled to have the perfect bodies. They follow a strict diet and I know how difficult it is to stay without water before your shoot. The fashion industry is quite cut throat.” Hardwork according to Madhura is not the only thing that is the key to this industry. It is a combination of hardwork, talent and luck. Some people are lucky enough to land in the right place at the right time and find the right role. That is something I feel is destiny. I believe in destiny. No matter how hard work, destiny and timing has to be just right.” She feels that the one person that keeps pushing you forward is yourself. “The toughest time I faced was when I got into a road accident while shooting pyaar ki ek kahani. I dislocated my shoulder and did not have enough time to recover before being back on set. For three months I had to shoot with a broken shoulder and my entire harness on.” Madhura says that it is tough playing characters that you cannot relate to. “This industry has been kind with the roles and achievements I have had till date so just being able to stand up on my own two feet and the financial stability and freedom has made me who i am today. I will always be grateful for that.” “I just want to inspire people and fill their minds with positivity. I want to tell people not to take life so seriously because all you have is right now and life is not meant to be taken so seriously. Just enjoy who you are today.” This quarantine Madhura discovered herself as an artist. “I had a lot of time to read, sketched and rediscovered myself as an artist. I wrote, I sang, I read and it was a phase where I could bring back all my creativity. I personally like this book called Alice by Paulo Coelho. Madhura continues to be an inspiration to our youth with her zealous personality, her creativity and her work. She brings in positivity and wishes her fans safety and to enjoy their life. Her most aspiration quality being that she has always reinvented herself for the better and continues to add creative aspects to her work and personality. • Nothing Fits Like A Memory: Ishmeet Kaur In Khan Market

Nothing Fits Like A Memory: Ishmeet Kaur In Khan Market By Ishmeet Kaur Nothing Fits Like A Memory: Ishmeet Kaur In Khan Market 30 May 2025 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Fashion isn’t just worn — it’s inherited, haunted, and stitched through time. Our Fashion Editor returns to the market that quietly made her. There are places in a city that don’t beg for attention. They don’t scream style. They simply exist — like scars. Like old songs that still know your name. Khan Market is one of them. This isn’t a love letter. It’s a confession. And I’m its witness. I walk the market like someone flipping through an old family photo album. Not smiling, not sad — just soaking in the faded corners of a place that has somehow stayed stitched into my bones. There’s a rhythm here. It’s not loud, but it’s persistent. Like a heartbeat you forgot you had. I’m not dressed for spectacle. Off-white cotton shirt. Worn-in sandals. Hair pulled back in a lazy bun. But something about this place makes you want to be honest. Honest in how you look. Be honest in what you remember. Like I’ve lived here a hundred times before in dreams where nothing is clear but the light. This market is a paradox — colonial bones and millennial breath. Tea vendors next to Pilates studios. A rickshaw stalled beside a luxury car. The scent of mogra battling diesel fumes. And somehow, in this mess, I fit perfectly. Not because I want to — because I was built by it. I remember coming here with my mother after school. We never bought anything. We’d just look. Stare at mannequins. Run our fingers over silks we couldn’t afford. That was my first fashion education — silent, sacred, and stolen. And just like that, the memories pour in — unfiltered and oddly specific. The juice stall where my dupatta once got stained with pomegranate. The tailor who gave me a measuring tape like it was a wand. The mirror in a fitting room where I first saw myself not as a child, but as a woman. Back then, I didn’t know the word for style. But I knew how my mother’s dupatta smelled after the monsoon. How a fold could hide a mood. How women looked more confident walking out of shops, even if their wallets were lighter. That’s fashion. Fashion is about more than just the clothes. The change. The quiet transformation. The alchemy. Near the alley’s edge, a teenager leans against a scooter, smoking like it’s his last rebellion before dinner. The smoke curls slowly, thick, indifferent to the world. I watch him without watching. It’s not the cigarette — it’s the solitude. The way people carry themselves when no one’s watching. I don’t smoke. But I get it. We all need rituals. Mine just happen to be older — like folding fabric the right way. Or smelling something and thinking, yes, this belongs to someone I once loved. I pass shelves stacked with old hardcover books, tailors crouched over chalk lines like cloth surgeons, and individuals engaging in casual familiarity — hands brushing, eyes avoiding. The market hums, a soft drone of stories you’re never invited into but feel anyway. I stop at a crooked mirror nailed to a cement pillar. I don’t look in. Just stand. Khan Market isn’t fashionable. It’s flawed. Which is why it works. Like all beautiful things, it’s held together by memory and duct tape. By now, the sun has begun its slow descent into Delhi’s dust. Everything glows in the kind of light that makes regrets feel poetic. I sit on a chipped stone ledge, sipping overly sweet chai from a glass with a small crack down one side. I hold a brown-paper parcel in my lap. No label. Just texture. Inside it? Perhaps it could be fabric intended for a collection in the future. Maybe a gift for my mother. Or maybe just something that smelled like the past and felt like tomorrow. I won’t say. I don’t need to. Fashion, for me, isn’t about shouting. It’s about knowing. And Khan Market — chaotic, cracked, unbothered — taught me how to know things without naming them. Before I leave, I run my hand along the edge of a wooden bench. Carved initials from 1993. A plastic rose melting in the heat. A dog yawns. A rickshaw honks. Life keeps moving. But for a moment, everything is still. I guess some places aren’t destinations. They’re reminders. That I used to be teeny. And brimming with amazement. And that’s where style begins. Then I walk off — not hurried, not slow. Just enough to leave a trace. And Khan Market, that stubborn old soul of a place, exhales. • Ozzy Held Me Together: No More Tears, Just Gratitude

Ozzy Held Me Together: No More Tears, Just Gratitude By Shriniwas Kodape Ozzy Held Me Together: No More Tears, Just Gratitude 28 July 2025 LIFESTYLE Advertisement We were young, loud, and starved for something real. Not the kind of “real” you read about in textbooks or hear in polite conversation. We needed the kind of noise that could silence the chaos inside our heads, the kind of sound that felt like it had dirt under its fingernails and blood on its knuckles. Our band was scrappy—just a bunch of half-grown kids chasing distortion pedals and cheap highs, rehearsing until the neighbors banged on the walls or the amps gave out. Nights would end with cigarette breaks, chai in cracked glasses, and a silence that hung heavier than the smoke. It was during one of those cigarette breaks that Waseem—my brother in riffs, in rage, and all things holy and unholy—pulled a disc out of his torn bag. It was scratched, half-faded, and had one word smeared in black marker like it had been written during an exorcism: SABBATH . He didn’t explain. Just handed it to me like it was sacred and muttered, “Play it loud. And don’t just listen. Feel it.” That night, I lay flat on the floor, headphones plugged in, lights out, heart wide open. The opening riff of War Pigs didn’t just play—it cracked the ceiling open. And when that voice came in— Ozzy’s voice—it wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t perfect. But it hit me like the truth. Raw, blistered, truth. The kind you don’t hear anymore. It was more than a performance. It was a present. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone—he was trying to survive. There was something so deeply human in his delivery. Not trained, not polished, just unfiltered emotion laid bare. It felt like someone was singing from the same dark pit I was stuck in. Screaming, but not for help—screaming with me. And suddenly, I wasn’t screaming alone. And then there was the band. My God, the band . Tony Iommi didn’t play guitar—he commanded it. Riffs that felt like molten iron being poured straight into your veins. Geezer Butler’s bass wasn’t just background—it was heartbeat, heartbeat, heartbeat. And Bill Ward, behind the kit, didn’t just keep time—he dragged time through the dirt and made it beg. These weren’t songs. These were spells. Thunderstorms in 4/4 time. But Ozzy… Ozzy was the center. Not because he outshone them—but because he carried their weight with him. Every lyric, every howl, every slurred syllable—he bled for it. And it made you want to bleed too. Not out of pain, but out of relief. Out of finally feeling seen. At that point in my life, I was a mess. Depression isn’t poetic when it’s real. It’s a leech that sticks to your soul. Addiction was more than a phase—it was a language I was fluent in. Some nights, I’d sit by the window, smoke curling into the sky, thinking I wouldn’t make it through the night. And then No More Tears would come on. And something in that song—something I still can’t name—would anchor me. Just enough to hold on till morning. Ozzy never told you it would get better. He never lied. But he was there—in your headphones, in your bloodstream, in your darkest hours. He gave us something better than optimism. He gave us honesty. And through that honesty, hope. He never claimed to be a hero. He never wore a crown. But for all of us who didn’t fit, who didn’t shine, who didn’t have the words—Ozzy was the voice. And Paranoid—God help me—that song still wrecks me. Every time that riff kicks in, I’m seventeen again, scared out of my mind, but finally feeling like maybe, just maybe, someone else out there gets it that it’s okay not to be OK. That you can be broken and still be. He’s gone now. And the silence he leaves behind is almost unbearable. But it’s also filled with something else—something heavy and holy. Because right now, somewhere in a bedroom lit by the dull blue glow of a laptop screen, some kid just hit play on Paranoid for the first time. And he’s scared. And confused. And lost in his head. But for those three minutes and thirty-one seconds—he’s not alone. Ozzy’s there. Whispering. Screaming and holding the line. You don’t have to meet someone to know them. I met Ozzy every time I needed a reason to stay. Every time I needed someone to scream for me when I couldn’t scream for myself. So here’s to him. To Ozzy. To every busted mic and blown amp and bloodied lyric. To the band that didn’t just change music—but changed me. Rest loud, man. And thank you for giving chaos a sound, and giving kids like me the strength to survive it. • Why the Maldives doesn’t fail to amaze tourists worldwide

by Rupashree Ravi by Rupashree Ravi Why the Maldives doesn’t fail to amaze tourists worldwide 5 August 2022 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement A made-for-Instagram spot, the Maldives is the new go-to favourite for tourists all over the world. It has become the world’s greatest and most special island destination. The warm climate, exquisite white sandy beaches, and incredible underwater marine life are the main reasons why many tourists visit the country, along with recreational pursuits like scuba diving, snorkelling, and surfing. The country is a collection of many tiny coral islands. Each island has at least one resort, which is surrounded by a lagoon, making it a paradise for tourists. There’s a beach for every person in the Maldives What is so special about this place? One of the first things is the peace and tranquillity of the island that attracts tourists in this busy world. You can only hear the sound of sea waves with no crowds or rush. The magnificent reefs and museums add to the ultimate Maldives experience. Some of the must visit places in the Maldives are The Grand Friday Mosque, the glowing beach at Vaadhoo Island, the Whale Submarine, the capital city of Male and of course, the breathtaking and exotic island beaches. Moreover, the dining experiences are unique and very delightful. There are plenty of choices from the Mediterranean to Asian cuisines and live grills. Some dishes are par excellence, where you sit under a starlit sky in an exclusive private dining experience on the beach. Without doubt, seafood is a must try like the Rihakuru, live lobsters, fish curries and cutlets, which is a staple diet. Nothing beats a beachside meal The craze to visit the island country increased more than ever before as Covid-19 lockdowns around the world were gradually lifted. The Maldives was one of the first countries to open international borders in mid-2020, with strict guidelines and measures to curb the virus. And thus, the Maldives became the most popular holiday destination and the biggest international tourism success story in 2020-21. The pandemic became the real game changer as Indians, in particular, started preferring the Maldives to other beach destinations like Goa, Thailand, and Malaysia. Because unlike the crowded and somewhat unhygienic beaches at these destinations, the Maldives was promoted as a safe haven and social distancing-friendly location. They began seeing the destination as a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon experience. With Indian celebrities and influencers visiting the country for vacations, staycations and even photoshoots and promoting it with the tagline ‘Isolation never looked this good’, the awe for the beautiful country only kept increasing. For the discerning Indian traveller, the Maldives gave a value for money and affordable luxury for all. The Maldives became the perfect hub for couples The country is known for its eco-tourism which promotes the survival of the reefs that surround its many islands. They protect the livelihoods of the local communities while also ensuring sustainable and hospitable stays. If you’re thinking of the perfect island getaway and a peaceful vacation, the Maldives is the best choice! #Maldives #Ecotourism #Beaches #Islands #Vacation #Staycation SEARCH The Fashion Capitals Of Asia: Exploring Style Beyond Borders TRAVEL Unveiling Delights Of Hotel Palazzo Versace Gem Of Dubai TRAVEL 7 Abandoned Cities In India And Abroad That Are Too Beautiful To Be Forgotten TRAVEL airBaltic Makes Global Debut On World’s Safest Airlines List TRAVEL Revolutionizing Air Travel: Qatar Airways Introduces AI-Powered Booking With Sama TRAVEL POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement By Shriniwas Kodape The Peninsula Bangkok: Grace Beside The Chao Phraya 4 October 2025 TRAVEL By Shriniwas Kodape 64 Floors Up: Lebua At State Tower Perspective 4 October 2025 TRAVEL By Shriniwas Kodape Four Seasons Bangkok: Where The River Holds Its Breath 17 September 2025 TRAVEL By Shriniwas Kodape Neon, Smoke, And Chili Fire: A Night In Bangkok’s Chinatown 2 September 2025 TRAVEL RELATED POSTS Advertisement

  • Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie

Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie by Aparajita Jaiswal Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie 1 May 2021 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Among many of our favourite luxury brand designers, Thomas Carlyle Ford, an American fashion designer and filmmaker, is truly one of the most inspiring and looked upon creators of fashion. He launched his eponymous luxury brand in 2006, having previously served as the creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Ford currently also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Tom Ford had quite the journey, figuring out his interests. At age 16, he enrolled at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, but quickly dropped out. He moved to New York City to study art history at New York University where he met Ian Falconer, who took him to Studio 54 for the first time, spiking his interest in acting and directing. Ford dropped out after a year, focusing on acting in television commercials. Ford began studying interior architecture at The New School’s art and design college, Parsons, in New York City. He kept visiting Studio 54, where he realized he was gay. The club’s disco-era glamor ended up being a major influence on his later designs. Before his last year at New School, Ford spent a year and a half in Paris, where he worked as an intern in Chloé’s press office, inspiring his interest in fashion. He spent his final year at The New School studying fashion, but graduated with a degree in architecture. In an interview with The New York Times, Ford said, “If I was ever going to become a good designer, I had to leave America. My own culture was inhibiting me. Too much style in America is tacky. It’s looked down upon to be too stylish. Europeans, however, appreciate style.” At the time, Italian fashion house Gucci was struggling financially and was seeking to strengthen its women’s ready-to-wear presence as a part of a brand overhaul. The company’s creative director, Dawn Mello hired Ford as the brand’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer in 1990 and Ford moved to Milan. “I was talking to a lot of people, and most didn’t want the job,” Mello said. “For an American designer to move to Italy to join a company that was far from being a brand would have been pretty risky.” Ford’s role at Gucci rapidly expanded; he was designing menswear within six months, and shoes soon after that. He also took over Richard Lambertson left as design director in 1992, heading the brand’s ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising, and store design. In 1993, when he was in charge of designing eleven product lines, Ford worked eighteen-hour days. Although there were creative tensions between Ford and Maurizio Gucci, the company’s chairman and 50% owner, inspiring Maurizio Gucci wanted to fire Ford, Domenico De Sole insisted that he remain. Nonetheless, Ford’s work during the early 1990s was primarily behind the scenes; his contributions to Gucci were overshadowed by those of Mello, who was the company’s public face. In 1994, Ford was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci. By 1999, the house, which had been almost bankrupt when Ford joined, was valued at more than $4 billion. When Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1999, Ford was named Creative Director of that label as well. In April 2004, Ford parted ways with the Gucci group after he and CEO Domenico de Sole, who is credited as Ford’s partner in Gucci’s success, failed to agree with Pinault Printemps Redoute’s boss over control of the Group. He has since referred to this experience as “devastating” and as a “midlife crisis” because he had “put everything into that for fifteen years”. When Ford left in 2004, Gucci Group was valued at $10 billion, hiring four individuals to split the work Ford had done. After leaving Gucci, Ford launched a line of menswear, beauty, eyewear, and accessories in 2006, named after himself, “Tom Ford”. De Sole became chairman of the label. Ford has described “the Tom Ford customer” as international, cultured, well-traveled, and possessing disposable income. For women, he added “strong and intelligent women who know their own style”. From the time we’re born until we die, we’re kept busy with artificial stuff that isn’t important. Tom Ford First Lady Michelle Obama wore an ivory floor-length evening gown designed by Ford to Buckingham Palace in 2011. He has also dressed Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, Julianne Moore, Hugh Jackman, Jon Hamm, and Henry Cavill. Ford designed Daniel Craig’s suits for his last three James Bond films: Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. Jay Z released a song titled “Tom Ford” with “Tom Ford” rapped numerous times within the song. Ford responded that he was flattered and “it means that one has really penetrated and made an impact on popular culture.” Following the song’s release, Ford received a huge spike in online search engine queries. Ford has been called a “fashion icon” and a “style icon” and he was included in “All-TIME 100 Fashion Icons” list. Ford has been included in several best-dressed lists, such as International Best Dressed List,The Guardian’s “The 50 best-dressed over-50s”, and British GQ’s “50 Best Dressed Men in Britain 2015”. He was featured on the cover of the 2011 spring/summer issue of Another Man, giving his opinion on what makes the modern day gentleman. He won several awards including several VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards and Council of Fashion Designers of America. Ford is known for sexy clothes, making provocative statements, and creating racy advertisements. Ford’s designs convey a “sophisticated sex appeal” and he has been credited for “bringing sexy back”. His advertisement campaigns have drawn controversy for use of nudity and “provocative sexual imagery”. Ford is also known to pose with celebrities and models in his ad campaigns. Ford is not only a designer but also a creative artist. Ford directed the Academy Award-nominated films A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals. In March 2005, Ford announced the launch of his film production company, Fade to Black. In 2009 he made his directorial debut with A Single Man, based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. The drama stars Colin Firth as an LA-based, gay college professor, alongside Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult and Matthew Goode. The novel was adapted by David Scearce and Ford; Ford was also one of the producers. In 2015, Ford became attached to direct Nocturnal Animals, an adaptation of the Austin Wright novel Tony and Susan. The film was released in 2016. Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams played the lead roles of Tony and Susan. Michael Shannon, Armie Hammer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Isla Fisher co-starred in the film. The film received praise from critics, as well as winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. • Porsche Taycan Turbo GT : Luxury In Overdrive

Porsche Taycan Turbo GT : Luxury In Overdrive By Ananya Patankar Porsche Taycan Turbo GT : Luxury In Overdrive 19 July 2025 LIFESTYLE Advertisement The silhouette of speed, frozen in time. With Yas Marina in its rear-view mirror, Porsche’s electric flagship is rewriting the language of luxury performance. On the cool tarmac of Yas Marina Circuit , beneath the desert stars and surrounded by the hushed intensity of track lights, Porsche made history. The Taycan Turbo GT didn’t just break the record for fastest production electric vehicle around the 5.281-kilometre Formula 1-grade circuit—it shattered it, clocking in a blistering 2:07.247. With GT racing driver Ramez Azzam behind the wheel and FIA observers on watch, it was speed redefined—silent, surging, and steeped in precision. The moment was official. The message was unmistakable: this isn’t just Porsche’s fastest EV. It’s a revolution on rubber. Meet the new, redefined and evermore powerful Taycan Turbo GT. Every surface, every seam of this Porsche is a study in how performance can meet poise. The optional Weissach Package strips away the rear seats in the name of performance purity, while carbon fibre elements and a dramatic fixed rear wing don’t just add character—they subtract drag. Even when parked, it seems ready to pounce. It’s not just streamlined—it’s sculpted, as if every curve has been air-brushed by speed itself. And yet, despite its aggressive silhouette, the Taycan retains Porsche’s design ethos of grace without gimmick. This is not a car you drive. It’s a car that propels you. With up to 1108 PS on tap thanks to Launch Control and Attack Mode—borrowed straight from Porsche’s Formula E bloodline—the Taycan Turbo GT explodes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.2 seconds. Top speed? 305 km/h. But those are just numbers. What is truly astonishing is how it all feels: the torque isn’t delivered, it’s detonated. Corners don’t resist, they invite. Straightaways feel like warp zones. It’s not brute strength—it’s balletic savagery, every motion engineered with minute attention and unleashed with seamless poise. At the heart of the Taycan Turbo GT lies a pulse inverter derived from Porsche’s 99X Formula E car , boosting current and response time to near-telepathic levels. The Porsche Active Ride suspension, tuned specifically for this GT variant, balances wheel loads like a tightrope walker mid-performance. And those brakes—lightweight ceramics refined with optimized disc chambers—shave kilograms where it counts. Even the weight savings from the Weissach Package are deliberate: 75 kilograms gone, and not a gram wasted. Its performance is measured in milliseconds and engineered in milligrams. The result? A machine that doesn’t just harness electricity—it commands it. As for the driving experience, low-slung and snug, the driver’s seat in the Taycan Turbo GT isn’t a throne—it’s an exoskeleton. You feel it before you even move: the pulse of potential underfoot, the poised anticipation of launch. As Azzam noted, “You sit low in the car so you feel connected.” And connected you are—every flick of the wrist on the steering, every feather of the throttle, met with immediate, almost emotional response. This isn’t merely about performance. It’s about presence. The GT isn’t trying to impress you. It’s trying to include you—in something precise, poised, and unrelentingly Porsche. And yet, despite its circuit credentials, the Taycan Turbo GT is still wrapped in the refined language of everyday Porsche luxury. Inside, it’s all clean interfaces, sculpted surfaces, and tactile satisfaction. It's as practical as it is provocative—offering the driver all the data, comfort, and control needed for daily roads, even as it carries the DNA of a track predator. There's an ease here, a confidence. No shouting. No theatre. Just seamless transitions—from traffic light to track lap, from asphalt to afterglow. There was a time when electric was seen as an alternative. Then, it became inevitable. Now, thanks to machines like the Taycan Turbo GT, it’s aspirational. This is not just Porsche's fastest production EV. It’s one of its most significant. A car that shows how sustainability and sensation can coexist—without compromise. With every lap record it shatters, with every supercar it silently humbles, the Taycan Turbo GT whispers a truth that’s getting louder with every passing year: the future isn’t coming. It’s already at the start line. And it’s wearing a Porsche crest.
