- The Pygmalion Effect
SOCIETY by Akshaya Chandar The Pygmalion Effect 6 August 2022 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Not many may know - the ancient Greek mythological tale of Pygmalion, has been a source of inspiration for more than a hundred works of literature, and about fifty films and plays. To refresh, Pygmalion was the prince of Cyprus and was a great sculptor. He creates an ivory statue of a woman so passionately that he gets obsessed with it. He prays to god for the statue to come alive and the God grants him the same! The Pygmalion is one of the most famous plays by George Bernard Shaw. The wisdom passed down to generations that a strong will can induce life even in a rock. George Bernard Shaw put the same prophecy in the play, and it was also created in the musical composition 'My Fair Lady'. Today we refer to the concept, that a person will achieve or perform as he is expected to perform as "The Pygmalion Effect". The main idea concerning The Pygmalion Effect is that if you believe that someone is capable of achieving greatness then that person will indeed achieve greatness. In other words, believing in potential simply creates potential. "The Pygmalion Effect" may occur all around us-whether it be at work, at schools or even at home. Closer home, the tour of Akshardham Temple at Delhi starts with the same concept of a rock turning into a human, with the qualities that the sculptor sees in it. Here at school, we the parents and teachers can create better students, scholars and pupils just by believing in the fact that they are the best. Let that be in behavior, academics, social conduct or any such attribute. This is truer, when working with underachievers. All it takes is, really believing in this fact. If we relate this closely, for instance, you tell a new teacher in a school - who has no previous experience with her new to be students, that a particular student of hers is extremely bright and clever. The new teacher will automatically be more supportive, more encouraging, teach more challenging material, be patient and allow that student more time to answer questions. The main concern is that this new teacher entirely believes that this student is bright and clever, and so is the converse for which we should be more careful. If I co-relate this with my young friends, I would say-just start communicating with yourself and others, with strengths and qualities, or skills and talents. You must start focusing on all that is positive and dismiss everything that is negative. Believe in yourself and others and you will give yourself the power to change lives. Every human, including you, has strengths, qualities, attributes, talents and skills. Use it for your best advantage. If the famous octopus Paul could create history in World Cup Football by his predictions, should we talk more for humans. Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he can and should be and he will become as he can and should be. #PygmalionEffect #Cyprus #Sculptor #GeorgeBernardShaw #Myfairlady #Greek SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world? - Why India is the most depressed country in the world?
SOCIETY by Anadi Gupta Why India is the most depressed country in the world? 1 September 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement India is the world’s most depressed country and we don’t talk about it as much as we talk about other diseases, but you’ll be shocked to know that 300 million people worldwide are suffering from depression. Depression and bad mental health have been ignored as a serious issue since ages. Mental health is as important as physical health but sadly nobody takes it as a serious illness and avoid talking about it. People in India still take it as a taboo. A study reported in WHO, conducted for the National Care Of Medical Health, states that at least 6.5 per cent of the Indian population suffers from some form of the serious mental disorder, in spite of the rural-urban differences. Though there are effective measures and treatments, there is an extreme shortage of doctors and mental health workers like psychologists and psychiatrists. As reported latest in 2014, it was as low as ”one in 100,000 people”. The average suicide rate in India is 10.9 for every one lakh people and the majority of people who commit suicide are below 44 years of age. According to these data, India is in a serious mental health crisis but the attitude which Indians show towards it is not helpful at all. It won’t make any change. A major part of population of India is highly judgmental towards those who have any kind of mental illness. They don’t like to talk to such people because they think it will affect their mental health too. According to the surveys the people who understand it come from good socio-economic environment and are highly educated. The young kids are coming forward to support many mental health campaigns because they understand and are facing stress a lot. India has less resources and more population but one of the main aspects in which we highly fail is the stereotypical thinking of the people who live here. People still are blinded by the fake traditions and rituals. But depression is a serious mental illness which should be taken seriously otherwise it can cause long lasting severe feelings of sadness, hopelessness and loneliness. There can be different symptoms for different people and it can also be differentiated according to gender. Many people mistook depression for sadness but it is more than just being sad and lonely. Symptoms of it can last from months to years. A person with depression cannot find pleasure or joy in anything. It gets very difficult for one to start a day and get off from the bed. There is just so much hopelessness in everything they do. Everything seems so tiring and difficult. If you see a person like this please tell him to get help if needed and get a proper treatment otherwise it may result in us losing another life. Spread awareness against it, try to make people aware everywhere that mental peace and stability is the most important thing. Many celebrities are now breaking stereotypes and coming forward to talk about it publicly so people can realize its effects. Many mental health foundations are doing great work for the cause. And we can now only hope for things to get better. SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world? SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Data saving the future environment 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement There’s a famous scene in Game of Thrones.Littlefinger says that knowledge is power, and Cersei responds by almost having him killed, and then making her personal guards do stupid guard tricks, to prove that actually, no — power is power. Put that into today’s context, with virtual workplaces and connections overpowering real life ones, Data is power. It’s an increasingly valuable resource, a lot of it still untapped by AI which generates itself to infinite quantities, be it cryptocurrency or Data is also very easy to generate and transport with newer insights being gained from old data. Repurposing data lends itself to being a multipotentialite entity. And with its diverse applications in almost every imaginable field , environment conservation and sustainability isn’t left behind. Quite a few companies and organizations are tapping into unchartered waters and finding ways to use data and insights to improve decision making for environment and related practices. One such Indian startup is Bluesky Analytics. Founded by Abhilasha Punwar, masters in Environmental management from Yale school of Forestry and Environmental studies and her brother. The company uses technology to sift through terabytes of data to provide historical, real-time and predictive environmental intelligence. - Feminism and what its not
SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Feminism and what its not 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Feminism: Why such a misunderstood word? Let us first understand what Feminism means, because in India this word is highly victimized, accused, and bullied. Feminism means prophesying equality from the point of view of a woman. Unlike the meanings that this word is given in this country, it does not promote gender inequality or tries to prove that men are in any way inferior to women. It is just equivalent to the concept of gender equality only within the viewpoint of a woman. Now, there will come questions why this viewpoint is considered from a woman’s point of view, why there isn’t a term called menism. It’s a completely healthy argument, but there is one phenomenon that the world has landed on and it still hasn’t recovered from ever since the dawn of it. The phenomenon is nothing but the most crucial of the societal construct that our ancestors instilled in our minds, called Patriarchy. This term means to have a societal construct completely dominated, ruled, and exorcised by men. that women are the second citizens, unturned and incapable of making any decision even for themselves. This particular thing has led to centuries of oppression of women. Women were the ones who had to take a step back to follow the path of a man. A mother sacrificed her needs, her interests to raise a son, a wife left her family and comfort to foster a man to build his empire. There was an eternity-long sacrifice that women adsorbed, absorbed, and digested to make a man what he is today. This makes a man privileged and a privileged person’s point of view can diminish the idea of Equality. There are no shaming men here, it’s just that it is hard to give up the privileges. If you are the decision-maker of what ice cream to eat in your ice cream shop, you can obviously pick your favorite, but an outsider will ask about the availability of that ice cream. It is the same way in the world, a woman is not granted all she wants but a man can take anything he wants as granted. A man can wear whatever he wants, roam whenever and wherever he wants, have any type of friend circle as he wishes, etc. But, at each step of the way a woman has to climb a bigger mountain to enjoy those same mundane things that a man is freely doing. And thus, there is a need to look at what woman’s needs are and how we can address them to match at the same level as men. Hence, we are viewing this equality concept from the eyes of a woman. But, sadly this concept is pathologically broken into pieces in Indian society. Indian society thinks that feminism is the chivalry of women as a way to seek attention, as a way to disrespect their religion, and most importantly as a way to demean men. In reality, it boosts women to actually understand the viewpoint of men, to understand the struggles that men face. The point of feminism is never chivalry but peace and a sense of responsibility, credibility, but we have made it such chaos that there are no bounds to it. As in every construct, here also the reason that such misunderstanding of the terminology is due to unawareness of knowledge or its lack thereof. The concept of lacking this knowledge is in rural parts that have brought themselves up in a highly conservative stature. The unawareness on the other hand is the bigger evil that spurs out of educated, civilized people who pass any comment bashing the male gender in the banner of feminism. Feminism is not threatening a man with sexual harassment lawsuit or mocking when a man gets in trouble. Feminism is in understanding that both women and men have their flaws and quirks. That both genders need equal rights, support, and law to reach a point of ethical correctness. Feminism is upholding the banner that we all are humans and we all need the same things. Feminism is understanding one another, in a way it prompts gender sensitization. It is all that word equality resonates with its every alphabet. One thing is to be understood that the ladder is for the oppressed to climb to the same pedestal as the privileged not to raise one above another. - The Journey Of Shilpa Joshi: A Musical Odyssey
The Journey Of Shilpa Joshi: A Musical Odyssey By Anushka Sharma The Journey Of Shilpa Joshi: A Musical Odyssey 6 August 2024 COVER STORIES Advertisement Shilpa Joshi’s journey into the world of music is nothing short of inspiring. Her story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the importance of following one’s dreams, no matter the obstacles. Shilpa’s foray into music began in 2017, a seemingly late start by industry standards. Yet, as she reflects, "It's never too late to start anything which is beautiful and you love and satisfies your soul." With these words, she captures the essence of her musical journey—a path driven by love and a desire to nourish her spirit. While 2017 marked her professional debut with the song "Pehla Pyaar," Shilpa’s connection to music was deeply ingrained long before. Despite her father’s insistence on prioritizing education, her passion for singing remained unwavering. “My father wanted me to study first. His main priority was my studies. But when I was done with my studies, he was okay with me choosing my path. Music was my first love, so I chose that.” Shilpa’s early professional years were marked by her collaboration with Kunal Jaisingh, a popular face in 2017. Her debut song, featuring Jaisingh, gained significant attention, setting the stage for her burgeoning career. "It’s like a dream come true, considering that it started as a passion but ultimately became my bread and butter," she remarks. Her journey, however, was not without its challenges. Shilpa speaks candidly about the importance of manifestation and visualization in her life. “In 2019, I went through a major surgery and spent nearly a year and a half recovering. Even during those tough times, I found happiness within myself. My father always told me, ‘As long as you are breathing, live every moment fully.’ This mindset helped me find strength and purpose even in the darkest times.” Shilpa’s musical career has transcended borders, earning her a significant following in Pakistan. She attributes this unexpected success to the organic and heartfelt nature of her work. “I’ve received a lot of love from Pakistan. Followers often ask me to create new songs or covers for them. This love has been overwhelming and deeply gratifying.” The conversation also delved into the evolving landscape of the music industry, particularly the use of autotune . Shilpa offers a balanced perspective, acknowledging its role in enhancing music while emphasizing the importance of maintaining the raw, authentic quality of a singer’s voice. She says, “See, the other electronic instruments are tuned on 440HZ already. Our vocal notes aren’t tuned to that extent. In order to have a harmonious compilation between the two, the people tend to make the use of auto tune. It’s all about ensuring that it sounds better at the end of the day.” Looking ahead, she remains committed to her independence as an artist. She believes in the power of independent music and the freedom it offers. “Labels are good, but I feel that if your song has a message, it will find its path. Independent artists have their own shine. People will know you, and why not take that chance?” Social media, while a powerful tool, is not the cornerstone of Shilpa’s career. She acknowledges its benefits but also warns against its potential pitfalls. “Social media is not everything. It has both pluses and minuses. Numbers are not that important. For me, what matters is the authenticity and sincerity of my music.” With a lot of love for her family in her eyes, and her voice, her story is one of resilience and authenticity. Her journey underscores the importance of staying true to oneself and the transformative power of music. As she continues to create and inspire, Shilpa remains a beacon of hope for aspiring artists everywhere. “Music is love, and this is something you can’t explain or measure. It is felt in your heart.” Through her words and her music, Shilpa continues to touch lives, proving that with passion and perseverance, dreams can indeed become reality. SOCIETY by Neha Pande Festival of Stones 27 July 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Bagwal also known as DevidhuraFair is celebrated at Maa Varahi Devi Temple in Devidhura located at a distance of 45km from Lohaghat in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand. Devidhura also marks the tri-junction of Almora, Pithoragarh and Nainital districts and is famous for its rich cultural fair that is celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm. This fair is celebrated every year during Rakshabandhan that falls on the full moon day of the month of Shravan. Thousands of people from Uttarakhand and Nepal come to visit this grand fair. Bagwal is celebrated by dividing four different groups, collectively known as ‘Khams’. The four groups are four different tribes – Gharwal Kham, Chamyal Kham, Lamgriha Kham and Valig Kham. The fair starts out with the worship of Goddess Varahi, after the worship Prasad is distributed and this is when everything gets a bit tricky. The members of each Kham position themselves on the four corners of the field of the temple and the priest commences the festival with the sound of the ‘shankh’/shell. Bagwal is no normal festival with just worship and joy but here the Khams are fighters who carry sticks, stones and a farra/shield for the fight. These fighters throw stones at one another while at the same time protecting themselves with the shield. It does not matter how wounded or injured they get, the fight does not stop till the priest concludes the fight with the sound of the ‘shankh’. While the fight is going on the rest of the attendees cheer their teams with fight drums, folk songs and folk dances. After the fight all the injured are treated with ‘bichchu grass’ ie. Urtica Dioca. The Myth behind the Bagwal festival:- According to the myth, there once was a tradition of sacrificing a man (Narbali) from the Kham each year to Goddess Varahi. On one such year, it was the turn of this old woman to sacrifice her grandson, with a heavy heart and mind full of devotion she prepared her grandson for the sacrifice. This touched the Goddess’s heart and she spared his life under the condition that an equal amount of blood should be offered to her. Since that day, Bagwal fair is celebrated by the people where the members of each Kham throw stones at each other in order to draw sacrificial blood for Goddess Varahi. Reason for taking this Cultural Fair :- The main reason I choose to write upon Bagwal cultural fair is because my hometown is in Uttarakhand and I also wanted to address the issue of ‘Bali’/Sacrifice. Sacrificing animals as well as people have been going on in our religion as well as many other religions since the dawn of time; from Mayan, Pagan, Hinduism, Muslim etc. Sacrifice or ‘Bali’ in Hindu religion has its own significance, it is symbolic of getting rid of 6 evil forces/enemies ie. Kama– Lust Krodha – Anger Lobha–Greed Mada– Pride Moha – Attachments Matsarya – Jealousy By the sacrificial festival of Bagwal the basic idea of sacrificing men or animals was stopped yet the sacrificial blood was spilled by the act of fighting and throwing stones at each other. Our culture and heritage is one of the oldest; yet, I wanted to showcase some of the flaws in it which have changed and evolved but are still there. In August 2019, 100 men got injured under 10 minutes while celebrating Bagwal in Champwant district, Uttarakhand on Thursday. Even though the human sacrifice was stopped yet, hundreds of people got injured which is not a small thing. This is just one small case, there are many more cases tied up to this festival. Even though there is a high court ban on the use of stones during the festival yet the locals seem to sneak in with stones while outsmarting the authorities.Even a lot of local authorities encourage this practice instead of putting a stop on it. I personally believe that the concept behind ‘Bali’ is not bad because every Dussehra we burn Ravan as a sign of victory of good over evil, just like that ‘Bali’ is the concept of sacrificing 6 evils to the goddess yet the literal concept of ‘Bali’ ie. To sacrifice a living breathing creature or to injure one another is completely wrong. God didn’t make us to harm each other therefore the literal concept of ‘Bali’ should be condemned just like the literal practice of Bagwal should be put to an end. The ideology, unlike the festival, should carry on and pass on from generation to generation. Bagwal is a beautiful festival from Kumaon, Uttarakhand which should be celebrated with joy and enthusiasm, without harming each other as the concept of Bagwal is beautiful just like the myth. Bagwal is the story of love and sacrifice therefore it should be practiced with love and sacrifice of our inner demons instead of throwing stones towards each other to draw out blood as a symbol. The festival is a perfect blend of folk songs, folk dances and folklores. And just like Bagwal our country has hundreds of festivals and practices with a beautiful story but an unlikely tragic execution. #MohaAttachments #Myth #6evilforcesenemiesie #Devidhurafair #Tribal #Regionalfestival #IndianMyths #Indianfestival #MaaVarahiDeviTemple #Bagwalfestival #MatsaryaJealousy #Champawatdistrict #KrodhaAnger #Shravan #Sacrifice #Culturalfair #Lohaghat #IndianRitual #Uttarakhand #LobhaGreed #MaaVarahi #KamaLust #Rituals #Bali #Khams #MadaPride #Rakshabandhan SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world? Exploring The Path Of Aspiring Actors And Producers: Insights From Anil Singh Chandel by Aparajita Jaiswal Exploring The Path Of Aspiring Actors And Producers: Insights From Anil Singh Chandel 6 September 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement “ A good director creates an environment, which gives the actor the encouragement to fly. ” These are the words of Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon. This quote shows the heavy responsibility placed on a film director, and these are severe words for anyone to fulfill. As such, only a man of varied skills would be able to do multiple roles within one project, and to do so successfully requires an acute and precise understanding of the medium of film. Enter Anil Singh Chandel, an Indian actor, producer, and director best known for his debut film “Mid Day Meal”. Anil Singh was born on the 10 th of December 1991 in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, where he spent his childhood till he left for Raigarh for further studies; after his studies, Chandel initially started working at companies such as Reliance Telecom and Fullerton India. He eventually quit these companies to create his own Construction and Project management firm, Chandel India Pvt. Ltd. In 2022, Chandel released his debut film, Mid Day Meal, designed to address food insecurity. The movie follows a professional chef who decides to help poverty-stricken children and cook and deliver mid-day meals to them; the movie earned an estimated 100,000,000 Indian Rupees as per its IMDB page. The film was written, directed, produced, and acted in by Anil Singh Chandel, proving his ability to take on multiple responsibilities and unique challenges in each field. His latest accolade is receiving the Indian Achievers Awards, organized by the national news magazine Power Corridors. The award recognizes and highlights educational achievements, social activism, and entrepreneurship. “For aspiring young actors and producers, the world of acting and producing offers a unique platform to express creativity, tell important stories and connect with audience on a deep emotional level “ says Chandel. It's a chance to bring characters to life, inspire change, and leave a lasting impact. Whether you're drawn to the thrill of performing or the behind-the-scenes magic of creating, pursuing acting and producing can be a fulfilling journey of self-discovery and artistic growth. For aspiring actors, Anil suggests they consider freelancing options like auditioning for roles in films, TV shows, and commercials, as well as offering their acting services for voice-over work or corporate videos. Producers can freelance by taking on projects such as producing short films, commercials, music videos, or web series. Both actors and producers can also offer their expertise for scriptwriting, directing, casting, and production coordination on a freelance basis. Online platforms and networking events can help connect them with potential gigs. One of the most intriguing questions for artists looking to get into this field is how successful figures like Anil Singh Chandel found their inspiration to enter the entertainment industry. Anil shares that he has been a cinephile from a young age. Anil says “I always wanted to be an actor then from my favorite actors' journeys and successes for motivation and now I'm here.” SEARCH A Journey Shaped By Courage, Creativity, And Social Media With Aditi Sharma COVER STORIES Inner Joy Trails My Inspiration : A Candid Conversation With The Creative Anushka Kaushik COVER STORIES Barkha Singh’s candid candour makes the way to an eye-catching interview COVER STORIES Educate, Empower, Excel: Priyanka Chahar Choudhary's Inspirational Overture COVER STORIES Waluscha De Sousa On Being Her ‘True Self’ And Going On The Dream Journey COVER STORIES POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement By Sakshi Shah Across Languages, One Voice: Sheena Chohan 1 April 2026 COVER STORIES By Sakshi Shah Mananveer Singh On Making Music That Feels Natural And Real 24 March 2026 COVER STORIES By Sakshi Shah Falak Khan On Acting, Identity, And Letting Her Work Speak For Itself 9 March 2026 COVER STORIES By Shriniwas Kodape Tej Music Vodka: The DJ Turning Youth Culture Into a Moving Dancefloor 30 January 2026 COVER STORIES RELATED POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement
- The Eternal Strings Of Amaan & Ayaan Ali Bangash
The Eternal Strings Of Amaan & Ayaan Ali Bangash By Shriniwas Kodape The Eternal Strings Of Amaan & Ayaan Ali Bangash 4 October 2025 COVER STORIES Advertisement The concert hall is full, yet hushed, as though the audience is holding its collective breath. Two sarods lie across two laps, polished surfaces glowing under the stage lights. Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash sit side by side, their postures mirrored, their eyes meeting for just a fraction of a second. Nothing is said, but everything is understood. Amaan’s fingers strike the first note, bold and deliberate. Ayaan follows, answering with a softer resonance, his strings almost whispering in contrast. In that instant, the music is born not from one instrument, but from two souls in conversation. This is the essence of the Bangash brothers: a dialogue woven in sound, steeped in tradition, but alive with the intimacy of siblinghood. They were born into music. Sons of the legendary Ustad Amjad Ali Khan , the sarod was never a foreign object in their childhood home; it was as common as the dining table, as natural as the morning sun. Their earliest memories are not of playgrounds but of ragas drifting through the air as their father practiced. Where most children are lulled to sleep by lullabies, Amaan and Ayaan were cradled by alaps. Theirs was not simply an education in music; it was an immersion, a way of life. Yet being heirs to such a towering legacy was never easy. “Growing up, people assumed music would be automatic for us,” Amaan recalls. “But the truth is, it demanded discipline, hours of practice, endless corrections, the constant reminder that the sarod isn’t just an instrument, it’s a responsibility.” Ayaan adds more quietly, “It was never enough to imitate. Our father always told us to find our own voice.” And find it they did. On stage, their differences are striking. Amaan’s playing has a force that feels almost impatient; his notes cut through air like a storm breaking. Ayaan, meanwhile, shapes his sound with delicacy, coaxing tenderness from steel strings. Together, the tension between them becomes magic. It is fire and water, provocation and reconciliation, push and pull. At times, they sound like they are arguing; at others, like they are laughing together. The audience is simply invited to witness. But their journey has never been about replication. The Bangash brothers have pushed the sarod into unexpected spaces, collaborating with Western orchestras, jazz ensembles, and global musicians. Their projects blend centuries-old ragas with contemporary arrangements, without ever losing the core of Hindustani classical music. “For us, collaboration is not compromise,” Ayaan explains. “It's a conversation. Every genre has something to say, and we bring our sarods to listen and respond.” Despite their ventures into fusion, the soul of their music remains deeply traditional. They speak of ragas as though they are living beings. “Each raga has its own temperament, its own mood,” Amaan says. “Some demand patience, others erupt quickly. Our job is to reveal them, not control them.” It’s this reverence for the art form that grounds them, even as they innovate. What makes their story human is not just the music, but the bond between them. Offstage, they are brothers in every sense; sometimes clashing, sometimes teasing, always circling back to affection. Their dynamic fuels their art. Amaan admits with a grin, “We argue a lot about tempo, phrasing, everything. But when the performance starts, all that tension turns into energy.” Ayaan nods, “That’s the beauty of playing with family. The disagreements don’t divide you; they deepen the music.” Audiences around the world have felt that depth. Whether in an intimate baithak in Delhi or a grand concert hall in Europe, the Bangash brothers carry the same presence: music that demands surrender. In an era obsessed with speed and spectacle, their performances slow time down. Listeners lean in, pulled into a soundscape where centuries of tradition meet the immediacy of now. And perhaps that is their greatest gift. They are not simply performers; they are bridges between father and future, between East and West, between the sanctity of inheritance and the necessity of reinvention. Their sarods remind us that heritage is not static, but breathing. Each note is proof that memory and modernity can coexist without conflict. The final stroke fades, and silence fills the hall. But it is not an empty silence. It vibrates, alive with resonance, as though the music still lingers, refusing to let go. That is the world of Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash where strings are not just strings, but storytellers, carrying forward a legacy while writing their own.
