  • Glass Slippers And Glittery Masks!

by Aparajita Jaiswal Glass Slippers And Glittery Masks! 27 July 2020 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Don’t get too comfortable girls! You never know when the other shoe falls off too. Well when Alfred Tennyson said, “‘It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all,” I strongly disagree. Sometimes the best charmers are the ones needed to be kept on lock down. Men would say anything to get the girl. Beware of the dogs! Be with a guy that ruins your lipstick not your mascara! Although, as challenging as atoning can be, the rewards make it worth the time, but most people find it difficult to admit that there was fault to begin with and find it easier to pretend it never happened or that it’s not going to be a bother at all. But the problem with hiding your sins is that they always come back to haunt you. All masks eventually have to come off and with them so do the gloves. We all wear different masks for different reasons. Some masks we put on because it’s truly who we want to be while some masks we wear because we hope to stay hidden. Some we wear because we cannot bear to see what’s underneath or because it is what someone else wants us to be. But that’s the problem with wearing them is that they can be ripped off at any moment. Every journey is fraud with twists and turns. The ultimate challenge is to stay the course, move on from the past and forge your path into the future. Because one false move can spell disaster. #tisbettertohavelovedandlostthantoneverhavelovedatall #AlfredTennyson #MasksGirlUltimatechallengeAlfredTennysonsaid SEARCH Countdown To History: Omega Unveils Paris 2024 Olympics Countdown Clock And Special Edition Timepiece LIFESTYLE Juggling Law And Fashion: The Inspirational Journey Of Riddhi Nahata, A Multifaceted Influencer LIFESTYLE Join Shruti Yogi On Her Enchanting Journey From Kumkum Bhagya To Wanderlust Saga LIFESTYLE Personal Growth And Relatability: Ishita Khanna's Key To Influencer Success LIFESTYLE 6 Disadvantages Of Being Pretty LIFESTYLE POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Unveiling the Myth: Does Pretty Privilege Truly Exist 17 April 2024 LIFESTYLE By Anushka Sharma How Do Some People Not Get Acne No Matter What 15 April 2024 LIFESTYLE By Anushka Sharma Kate Middleton’s Story Has Only Gotten Worse With Time 18 March 2024 LIFESTYLE By Rini Pathak The Skill Of Ageing Gracefully: Secrets From The Land Of Longevity 17 March 2024 LIFESTYLE RELATED POSTS Advertisement

  • THE XXXVI ENTRÉE

by Akash Khatri THE XXXVI ENTRÉE 7 July 2022 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement An avid foodie? Someone who wouldn’t mind non veg for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Then wazwan is your one stop. So catch the next flight and head to the Switzerland of India, the spectacular valley of Srinagar and walk in a wedding or celebration. I promise you that the natives will be more than happy to serve you. The Vale of Kashmir has been attracting people from different corners of the world not only for its charm, beauty and tranquillity but also for its mouth-watering, delicious and spicy dishes and cuisines. The hidden secret lies in the variety of hot spices like cardamom, ginger, fennel seeds, cinnamon, black cumin and so on. They are popular because of their appealing flavour, texture, and palatability characteristics. They form an inextricable part of Kashmiri culture. The names of the dishes and their bountiful, spice-rich sauces tell us a long history of influences. The infusion of tradition and culture lead to a beautiful amalgamation of dishes. The methods of cooking are borrowed and mixed Iranian, Afghan and Central Asian practices. Wazwan (Kashmiri: وازِوان) is a multi-course meal in Kashmiri cuisine, the preparation of which is considered as an art and a point of pride in Kashmiri culture and identity. Almost all the dishes are meat-based using lamb or chicken with a few vegetarian dishes. Recently, Wazwan is also served internationally at Kashmiri food festivals and reunions. From wedding celebrations to memorials commemorating the 40th day after a family member’s death, the wazwan feast forms an integral part of family gatherings in Kashmir and leaves a person mouth-watered if sniffed from a distance. The credit for popularizing wazwan dishes goes to Persian and Sanskrit immigrants. The word wazwan is derived from two words, ‘Waze’ means a Cook and ‘Wan’ means a place where the cook cooks. The origin of the term has also been derived from a Persian word, ashpaaz, which means a special cook proficient in making soups, and with the passage of time the term became “Waza”. Wazwan is an art and is learnt through heredity only. It is rarely passed on to other persons outside the clan. It is an integral part of the Kashmiri culture and heritage. The availability of the Waza determines the marriage schedule of weddings. A week or two before the function or ceremony chief cook is hired to discuss the quantity and quality of rice, meat, spices, chicken, vegetables and other items of cookery. The whole wazwan is cooked on wuri, firewood stove-train, in large and small copper cauldrons, locally called Daeg and Degchi. It consists of thirty-six meals, fifteen preparations of meat are cooked overnight under the guidance of a head chef called Vast Waza who is assisted by other cooks. The basic prerequisite of a wazwan is that freshly slaughtered meat is used for its preparation. It also contains a lot of dry fruits and spices which are freshly homemade. The red colour is usually derived from either the Kashmiri chillies or Cockscomb flower called Mawal. The feast is so opulent that each platter customarily gets piled with 8 to 13 pounds of meat and can take more than two hours to eat. Waste is out of the question. Many wazwans end with doggy bags and guests angling to take away more of their favourite dishes. The process of serving begins with washing hands of guests by providing water to them by a copper jug and a basin, called Tash Naer. After that, Dastarkhan, Table Cloth is spread on the floor which serves as a sanitary surface for food and groups of four people sit around it. A sizeable circular dish, traem, with a mound of rice with different varieties of wazwan on it is served to each group. Then, Waze takes rounds with copper cauldrons and a ladle to serve the additional dishes one by one. Meanwhile alongside, salad, curd, water and soft drinks, and pulao are served. Along with these dishes curd, pickle and chutney made of walnut, onion, pumpkin, radish etc. are served in small pots. They say variety is the seasoning of life. Some of the main dishes of this extravaganza spread are: Rista These are meatballs served in fiery red gravy. Each Traem consists of 4 Ristas one for each person. They are made by boneless meat which is smoothened on a wooden mallet and often have meat fat which is added while the meat is smoothened. The perfection requires extraordinary skill Lahabi kabab or Moachi kabab Succulent skewered lamb kebabs which are flattened, given diamond-shaped and cooked in spices and yoghurt. Waza kokur (two halves or two full chicken cooked whole) Daeni phoul (mutton dish) Doudha ras (mutton cooked in sweet milk gravy) Rogan josh Lamb which is marinated at least 2 hours before is cooked in oil and Kashmiri spices, the colour of the dish comes from Kashmiri Red Chillies added to it. Methi Korma It is a sort of stew usually made with lamb stomach and flavored with methi or fenugreek leaves which adds a lovely unique flavor. This flavored gravy is very famous amongst Kashmiris and part of the extensive meat cuisine of the region. Tabak maaz It is a glossy meat made of lamb ribs that are cooked twice and then simmered in yogurt with spices till tender. It’s then fried thoroughly and served in dry form. The richness of the dish is apparent with the ingredient list, it tastes absolutely fabulous and the aroma pulls you towards another bite. Daniwal korma (a mutton curry with coriander) Waza palak (green spinach cooked into a silky consistency with small mutton balls known as paliki riste) Aab gosht (lamb cooked in milk curry) A sacral area of the vertebral column of lamb or mutton is cooked in milk with saffron, cardamoms and without other spices. Marchwangan korma (an extremely spicy lamb dish) Kabab (minced meat roasted on skewers over hot coals) Gushtaba (a velvety textured meatball in white yoghurt gravy) It is the finishing dish made of minced mutton balls which are made in yogurt and spices. It is similar to Rista but less spicy and it’s aroma resembles yakhni. Gustaba is like Rista made from pounded meat emulsion. Yakh’n This dish can be prepared with lamb or lotus stem. It is a spiced yogurt based dish cooked without chilies. Bay leaves, cloves, cardamoms are the prime flavors to the dish. The mutton is cut in the form of chunks of about.5-6 cm which is pre-cooked in boiling water for 20 mins before adding the gravy of yogurt. Ruwangan chhaman (cheese squares with tomato gravy) It is cheese cooked in tomato sauce along with spices. Cheese is called Chamman in Kashmiri. Dum selva (potatoes cooked in yoghurt gravy) Dum aloo Gand Aanchaar (chopped onions mixed with chillies, salt, yoghurt and spices) Muji chetin or Mooli akhrot chutney (a sharp radish and walnut chutney) Phirni The wazwan ends with this creamy delicacy, it is a milk pudding thickened with semolina or ground rice, flavoured with cardamom and optionally saffron, set in individual bowls with slivered nuts and silver leaf Ufff, it ends finally. I’m already drooling at the thought of all of it. You surely won’t be able to walk back home after all that eating. • Purab Kohli’s Cinematic Expedition Through Films, Travel And Self-Expression

by Akshra Khandelwal Purab Kohli’s Cinematic Expedition Through Films, Travel And Self-Expression 22 September 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement As the midyear sun casts its warm glow upon us, we find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of moments, events, and experiences that shape our lives. For actor extraordinaire Purab Kohli, these last six months have been a whirlwind, an exhilarating rollercoaster of creativity and exploration that has left him both exhilarated and eager for more. As we settle in for a candid chat with the versatile actor, we delve into his recent adventures, cinematic escapades, wanderlust, and thoughts on life, work, and style. "It's gone by really fast. It's been quite a busy first half of the year," Kohli begins with a boyish grin, his eyes sparkling with the energy that has propelled him through a bustling six months. "I've been in three films back to back," he continues, recounting his dynamic journey since March. The actor's journey unfolded like a tapestry, with each thread representing a different cinematic endeavour. "Putul," he mentions a film that swept him into its narrative embrace throughout March and April. Followed by "Let There Be Love," a project that captivated him throughout May and June. And then there was "Ahutti," a venture that spanned from June to July, inviting him into another realm of storytelling. And then, the much-needed interlude - a holiday that rejuvenated his spirit and encapsulated the essence of family. "That brings us to seven months of the year, more than half the year. And raring to go for the next five months, looking forward to the next five months," Kohli asserts, his enthusiasm palpable. Speaking of cinematic ventures, Kohli's eyes light up as he delves into the intriguing world of "Blind." "It was a film released on Jio Cinema last month," he begins, recounting his role in the narrative alongside Sonam Kapoor. The film's chilling premise casts him as an evil, serial-killing driver, a role that contrasts starkly with his pleasant demeanour. The journey of filming "Blind" was marked by challenges, notably the lockdown restrictions and the winter cold of Glasgow, where the shooting took place. "A lot of the shooting of Blind was done in the dark at night," Kohli shares, his voice tinged with reminiscence of the intense experience. "When you see the film, you'll realise it was freezing conditions." But amidst the challenges, camaraderie blossomed among the small crew, creating an atmosphere of creativity and connection that kept spirits high. As the conversation steers toward his love for travel, Kohli's eyes light up like a child's Christmas morning. "Yes, of course, I love to travel. Who doesn't love to travel?" he exclaims. But the seasoned traveller has found himself favouring road and train journeys overflights, citing the exhausting ordeal of airports. "I wish someone could come up with an easier experience of airports," he muses, echoing a sentiment shared by many. For Kohli, travel is an avenue for self-discovery, a means to unearth uncharted facets of oneself. "I love seeing new places. I love discovering new parts about myself in these new places," he declares, an explorer at heart. A seasoned globetrotter, Kohli eagerly unveils the top contenders on his bucket list. Having recently ticked off Norway and Scandinavia from the list, he now sets his sights on South America, with Brazil, in particular, capturing his imagination. "Brazil is the next one to check off," he shares, his eyes glittering with the anticipation of new horizons. Peering into the future, Kohli opens up about upcoming releases and his plans for the months ahead. With a handful of releases on the horizon, he takes a step back to embrace family and recharge before diving back into cinema. Speaking of his journey in the industry, Kohli acknowledges the ebb and flow that characterises any creative endeavour. "The industry is always welcoming to anyone who has a reasonable success rate," he reflects. "But yes, to me, it has been very welcoming. It's been very open and loving for the last 25 years." A topic that couldn't be overlooked is Kohli's signature salt-and-pepper look, which he wears with authority and pride. "The salt-and-pepper look gives me some age," he chuckles, reflecting on the visual impact of his facial hair. He shares style advice and underscores the importance of comfort and authenticity in one's appearance. "Any style starts from knowing what makes you feel comfortable and wearing that proud," he advises, reminding us that confidence is the heart of true style. As our conversation with Purab Kohli draws to a close, we're left with a glimpse into the life of a man who thrives on exploration, creativity, and authenticity. His journey through the cinematic landscape mirrors the path of life itself - one marked by challenges, camaraderie, and a ceaseless pursuit of new horizons. And just as he leaves his mark on the silver screen, his insights into travel, style, and self-discovery leave an indelible impression on our hearts and minds. • Is Africa The Next World Leader In Fashion

By Anushka Sharma Is Africa The Next World Leader In Fashion 20 March 2024 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement In the vibrant tapestry of global fashion, Africa's presence is increasingly prominent, painting a picture of creativity, innovation, and economic prowess. With a burgeoning youth population, rapid urbanization, and the infusion of digital technologies, the continent's fashion landscape is undergoing a seismic transformation, poised to emerge as a formidable leader in the global fashion arena. From the bustling streets of Abidjan to the chic boulevards of Nairobi in Kenya, African cities are not only economic hubs but also veritable crucibles of fashion and design innovation. Despite facing challenges such as limited investment, nascent educational systems, and the imperative need for intellectual property protection, Africa's potential to shape the future of fashion remains undeniable. UNESCO's seminal report, "The African Fashion Sector: Trends, challenges, and opportunities for growth," unveiled in October 2023, illuminates the continent's trajectory towards fashion supremacy. Africa boasts a rich tapestry of raw materials, with 37 out of 54 countries producing cotton, rendering it a significant player in the global textile market. Moreover, the continent serves as both an exporter and importer of textiles, with a trade volume indicative of its burgeoning influence. A notable trend highlighted in the report is the growing demand for "Made-in-Africa" fashion, particularly among the youth demographic, who account for a significant portion of the continent's population. The burgeoning middle class further fuels this demand, catalyzing the emergence of new consumer markets and amplifying Africa's fashion footprint on the global stage. The digital revolution sweeping across Africa plays a pivotal role in fostering intra-continental trade and nurturing young talent. With 32 Fashion Weeks held annually, the continent serves as a crucible for haute couture, craftsmanship, and sartorial expression. The report forecasts a staggering 42 percent surge in demand for African haute couture over the next decade, underscoring the continent's rising prominence in the global fashion echelon. Despite the palpable momentum, UNESCO identifies four critical challenges that necessitate strategic interventions to unleash Africa's fashion potential. The most critical amongst these challenges is the imperative to bolster legal protections for designers and industry professionals, encompassing intellectual property rights, fair remuneration, improved working conditions, and the facilitation of professional unions. Investment in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) emerges as the second imperative, considering that these enterprises comprise 90 percent of Africa's fashion sector. Beyond their economic significance, SMEs serve as custodians of cultural diversity and are pivotal in fostering local employment opportunities, particularly for the continent's burgeoning youth population. Addressing environmental sustainability constitutes the third challenge outlined by UNESCO. While the fashion industry remains a significant contributor to environmental degradation, Africa possesses untapped potential to harness local materials, innovate sustainable textiles, and promote eco-conscious consumption patterns. Notably, the production of organic cotton fiber in Africa surged by 90 percent between 2019 and 2020, signaling a burgeoning movement towards sustainability within the continent's fashion landscape. Moreover, the report underscores the need to establish robust recycling channels to mitigate the environmental impact of the second-hand clothing market, which represents a significant segment of global imports. With 40 percent of discarded garments ending up in landfills, enhancing recycling infrastructure is imperative to foster a circular economy within the fashion industry. In conclusion, Africa stands at the precipice of a transformative epoch in the global fashion narrative. With its rich cultural heritage, burgeoning talent pool, and excellent, growing consumer base, the continent possesses all the prerequisites to ascend as a world leader in fashion. By surmounting challenges, fostering innovation, and embracing sustainability, Africa's fashion renaissance heralds a new dawn of creativity, inclusivity, and economic prosperity on the global stage. • Mental Health: Hush we don’t talk about it out loud

by Raunak Singh Hooda Mental Health: Hush we don’t talk about it out loud 1 June 2021 LIFESTYLE Advertisement When people hear the term healthy, they usually focus on physical stuff such as low cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, diabetes. But being healthy is not just being physically fit it also includes if the individual is mentally and emotionally fit. Unfortunately, countless people suffer from mental health problems that are just as deadly as physical problems. To understand the importance of mental health first we need to understand what does it mean. These all affect our mental health to great extents and that is the reason why we need to take help of psychologists, councilors, social helpers or maybe just talk to our loved ones because having bad mental health can not just be harmful to us but for everyone around us too. For example, depression is an ignored but dangerous illness if not cured, long term depression can lead to further mental as well as physical illness, can cause the victim to have maniac episodes, suicidal thoughts urge to self-harm, remove their problems perhaps murdering the ones troubling them sometimes too, destruction, isolation, and much more. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 16.2 million U.S. adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2016. This represents 6.7 percent of the U.S. adult population. It is calculated that the ratio of a mental health professional helper to the public is 1 to 40,000 people. So it is high time that we need more people in this field of profession. By all this, we understand that it is very important that we take care of our mental health at an initial stage before it turns out that we r also boarding the train to depression. Staying mentally healthy helps us face challenges, stresses, make better decisions, cope better with sudden changes and setbacks which life throws at us. It also prepares us to be more efficient. To take care of your mental health initially one must know how to control anger, eat and sleep properly, do physical activities, meditate, pursue the hobbies that make them feel happy, socialize, find joy in small things and learn to appreciate life, never shy away to get help if you feel like that you need it because “just because no one can heal or do your inner work for you, does not mean you can, should or need to do it alone” ~ Lisa Olivers SEARCH Countdown To History: Omega Unveils Paris 2024 Olympics Countdown Clock And Special Edition Timepiece LIFESTYLE Juggling Law And Fashion: The Inspirational Journey Of Riddhi Nahata, A Multifaceted Influencer LIFESTYLE Join Shruti Yogi On Her Enchanting Journey From Kumkum Bhagya To Wanderlust Saga LIFESTYLE Personal Growth And Relatability: Ishita Khanna's Key To Influencer Success LIFESTYLE 6 Disadvantages Of Being Pretty LIFESTYLE POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Unveiling the Myth: Does Pretty Privilege Truly Exist 17 April 2024 LIFESTYLE By Anushka Sharma How Do Some People Not Get Acne No Matter What 15 April 2024 LIFESTYLE By Anushka Sharma Kate Middleton’s Story Has Only Gotten Worse With Time 18 March 2024 LIFESTYLE By Rini Pathak The Skill Of Ageing Gracefully: Secrets From The Land Of Longevity 17 March 2024 LIFESTYLE RELATED POSTS Advertisement

  • Where The Conversation Took Turns Like The Everest’s Terrain With Sahil Salathia

by Anushka Sharma Where The Conversation Took Turns Like The Everest’s Terrain With Sahil Salathia 27 January 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement In a very interesting conversation with Mr. Sahil Salathia, we learnt far too much about how he perceives things outside the realm of acting and while he’s on set. Nevertheless, these conversations took turns like that of Everest(Pun Intended) and we loved him in that series! Movies aren’t all that Sahil Salathia is about. He also has his hands dipped in fashion and is quite a groundbreaking idol indeed. When asked about how he seeks to break the fashion stereotypes for the men as a fashion icon himself, he said, “Firstly, thank you for addressing me as a fashion icon: I’m humbled! Considering the boundaries that lie in fashion, they are far too many for men and women to tackle. One shouldn’t have a lot of seriousness around these boundaries. You wanna wear colour, wear colour, you wanna wear black nail paint, do that. Life is art, hence, be artistic and break these so-called boundaries! The key is to not take yourself so seriously!” The key indeed is to not take ourselves so seriously, after all! Fashion is art you wear and Sahil has made it look beyond surreal. Elucidating upon how it was like to work for the series, “Everest”, he fondly recalls, “I got a Lines Gold Award for the best debut and it was an incredible experience. We shot for a year in Dokriani glacier, and shot for a year and a half in total, considering the kind of a perfectionist that Ashutosh sir is. We really put in the work on this series, and Target and Everest are both available on Hotstar is indeed worth all the admiration! Ashutosh sir is a sheer gentleman, and I got to learn so much from the young cast and the fantastic actors that were a part of this series.” While there is so much that the actor has already got himself into, we couldn’t help but seek a glimpse of the upcoming projects he is set for in the future. He tells us all about them and how! “I’ve done two very very interesting parts in two very very very interesting web series. I can’t talk too much about it, but one is produced by Nikhil Advani and the other is produced by Viacom. I’d let them come up with more announcements, but I’ve finished filming and it was a bliss indeed!” Talking about the roles that he has particularly loved during his current tenure in the industry, he fondly recalls, “I can’t really pick a role that is closest to my heart, but I particularly loved my role as “Arjun Sabharwal”, the mountaineer from Everest, because it was my first and it was with Ashutosh, who is literally a legend. There are two more very interesting roles I’ve done which you’ll get to see soon.” As a groundbreaker in fashion and an actor whose skills speak for himself, we sought more of him than just acting. We wanted to know all about his viewpoint towards therapy for mental health issues amongst men and women in today's age and climate. He says, “Mental health is one of the pressing issues in today’s times. Considering how rapidly dynamic our lifestyles are, it’s imperative to understand the sheer importance of how mental health impacts us. Since I’m not a professional, I’d recommend one should seek help when one deems fit. Mental health is the most intrinsic part of our being and should not be ignored. Personally, I love to meditate, go to the gym and help release my endorphins through doing things that I absolutely enjoy!” As we furthered onto the topics of feminism and women empowerment, he stated, “Women empowerment is something we should all be very passionate about, since it’s not just for women, but also for the men. Considering how much we have suppressed women in the past, one ought to stand up for their rights in today’s scenario to make amends for the past. Feminism is about the rights that women rightfully deserve. It is about equality and being fair and I think everybody should believe in that.” As an actor who believes that the odds to be ever in his favour, he has an advice for everyone who seeks to get into this industry: “My advice would be to stay disciplined, stay balanced and manifest while you put in the effort. You get luckier when you work harder. Ask yourself one very important question, “Are you passionate about art or do you just wish to be famous?” Ultimately, this is what you should ask yourself before you plan to get into the industry. It’s the art that ultimately takes you places.” Art is something that is exuded through your passion for something, and the art of movies is to be known and perfected than be swooned over for the fancies that surround it. Nobody does it better than Sahil Salathia indeed. • Elegance is Everything: How Korean Fashion Has Swept The World

by Rupashree Ravi Elegance is Everything: How Korean Fashion Has Swept The World 1 August 2022 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement It is no doubt that elegant, comfortable and classy fashion has become the go-to choice for this young and booming generation. Young adults’ interest and fascination towards growing popular cultures are reflected in their music, food, and fashion choices, to name a few. With the Hallyu wave taking over the world by storm, where Korean cultural practices are gaining popularity and increased overseas attention, K-fashion has found itself a loyal and global fanbase. It has become an international phenomenon that has paved its way into the Indian market too. Simply put, K-fashion or Korean fashion is inspired by the global love for K-pop and K-dramas, which at the moment, appears to be at an all-time high in India. It is a fusion of modern fashion with a tweak of conservative style and is quickly becoming a strong fashion statement all across the world. K-fashion, with its Less is More attitude sets its clothing apart from other fashion trends. From baggy pants, and oversized tops to trench coats and tote bags, K-fashion has got you all covered. This is because the sense of style is an aesthetic that is delicate, yet quite distinctive compared to other cultures. It doesn’t scream, rather it is simple yet minimal and classy. Korean boy band BTS has revolutionized the fashion scene in the country. Whether it is the basic colour palettes of muted and pastel colours like beige and grey, Koreans will flaunt their elegance as they go for a formal yet casual style. High-waisted pants and a luxurious blouse complemented with high heels is the most sought-after look for Korean women. Such an outfit is classy and professional at the same time. • Going Green, One Stitch At A Time

by Anushka Sharma Going Green, One Stitch At A Time 24 April 2023 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Isha Nabar’s sense of fashion is eternal, because it is ethical. The very multi-talented fashion designer “Isha Nabar” uses a variety of hand stitched techniques on the hand woven fabric of khadi to do her bit for the betterment of the environment. Isha , an accomplished fashion designer of Indian origin, is based in New York and commenced with her multi-disciplinary learning at the Parsons School of Design, New York. Her niches of interest included fashion, business and jewellery design, the knowledge of which has actually given her quite an edge as a designer. Her much discussed initiative, ‘Charkhara’ (colloquially translated as wheel - 'Charkha' and green - 'Hara') is based on the design of a sustainable garment that is completely hand-stitched, through the usage of a hand spun fabric that is ‘Khadi’. This fabric, constituted of natural fibre, has played a significant role in the cultural, political, and socio-economic past of the country as many of us know. It was introduced by Mahatma Gandhi during the colonial rule in India, when he himself spun the yarn on the wheel to instil a sense of self-reliance amongst people. Khadi is since then spun on the ‘Charkha’ (the spinning wheel on which the yarn is hand spun.) The Charkha, with 24 spokes, which is also present on the Indian flag, is a symbolic representation of the hours of the day and the value of time. Taking this forward, Isha’s garment has 24 unique joinery techniques which beautifully acknowledge the efforts of those who spin the wheel painstakingly for 24 hours a day. The key intention behind this initiative is to avoid the use of machinery altogether in order to make a truly sustainable garment. She has therefore innovated these non-intrusive and hand crafted joinery systems of a wheel and a coin - a ‘paisa’ (equivalent to a penny) to construct the entire piece. One can spin the wheel to adjust the fit of the garment, while pulling closer the coin. The ‘paisa’ is meant to be a reminder of the minimal wages of the artisans. Isha explains “With this project, I hope to raise awareness on the khadi fabric, the negligible pay of the khadi artisans and the laborious process of hand spinning this fabric.” She wants to increase its perceived value and shift the mind-sets of the audience to more conscious consumption for a greener tomorrow. By using a hand woven fabric like khadi, along with specialised hand stitched techniques, she brings to the forefront the possibility of a process that is entirely sustainable in not only producing a garment but also in its end use. Her thoughtful and intentional design now lends the wearer the possibility of draping the exquisite Khadi fabric in multiple stunning and fashion-forward forms of outerwear. Isha’s design is disruptive, shows brilliance in its concept, is innovative and most importantly, has a deep emphasis towards responsible fashion. In a complex and evolving industry, ‘Charkhara’ is a conversation starter and clearly representative of her unique and novice design ideology, which is going beyond the mere aesthetics and functionality of fashion. It also explores the realm of sustainable material development and empowers the artisanal communities. Isha’s superlative skills, technical expertise and intelligence is well displayed in the complex joinery system which holds the fabric together. The final outcome was an outstanding, one-of-a-kind couture piece, born from the harmonising generational heritage with some unmistakably luxurious silhouettes, whilst carrying a profound message. This collection stays true to the roots of Khadi, thus retaining its rawness and presenting itself as an exhibit that is earthy and tonal. “The fabric itself is so well-worked, I wanted to let it shine and give it the stage it deserves” Isha tells us. There is nothing more captivating in fashion than the synergy of a sense of play and a purpose, which Isha has exuded graciously! She brings a point of view to the table that is rare to come by. Ironically maximizing a sense of purpose within a minimalistic framework, ‘Charkhara’ tells a story of rich artistry in a way that repositions the Khadi fabric with refinement and finesse. Isha is internationally recognized for her distinctive skills and ingenious design thinking, resulting in her bagging the AATCC Foundation Jasani Textile Scholarship and being a finalist for UK’s Creative Conscience Award. Isha has also worked with fashion houses like Tanya Taylor, Oscar de la Renta and Derek Lam in New York and Masaba and Vogue in India, giving her global exposure and fuelling her creativity as an artist. She is a new age designer to watch out for with her aesthetic sensibilities, critical thinking and views on a greener tomorrow. And she believes in getting there one stitch at a time!
