Some songs are carefully mapped out. Others arrive when no one is looking.
For Bonobo, Fire on the Water began as nothing more than an acoustic guitar loop recorded while testing studio equipment one morning. It wasn't supposed to become the emotional centrepiece of his next album. In fact, the first attempt at building the track didn't work at all. The idea was shelved, lunch happened, a walk followed, and only then did something click.
That unexpected moment now introduces Distance in Static, Bonobo's first studio album since Fragments, arriving on September 11 via Ninja Tune. Alongside the release of Fire on the Water, the British producer has also shared Drift, giving listeners two very different windows into what promises to be one of his most expansive records yet.
Known offstage as Simon Green, Bonobo has spent more than 25 years shaping electronic music in a way that feels distinctly his own. While much of the genre often leans into high-energy drops and festival moments, Bonobo has always found beauty in restraint. His music is built on atmosphere, live instrumentation and emotion, effortlessly blending electronic production with jazz, folk, orchestral arrangements and influences from around the world. It's a sound that has earned him seven Grammy nominations, collaborations with artists like Erykah Badu and Damon Albarn, and a loyal global audience that continues to grow.
That quiet approach is exactly what makes his collaboration with Grammy Award-winning vocalist, composer and producer Arooj Aftab feel so natural.
Aftab has carved out her own remarkable space in contemporary music by bringing together South Asian classical traditions, jazz, ambient music and deeply personal storytelling. As the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy Award, she has become known for creating music that refuses to sit inside one genre. Bonobo has done much the same throughout his career, making Fire on the Water feel less like an unexpected collaboration and more like two artists finally crossing paths at exactly the right time.
Much of Distance in Static was recorded at Neil Young's legendary Broken Arrow Ranch studio in Woodside, California, where Green invited Aftab to work on the record. The breakthrough came almost by accident. After the original version of the song failed to land, Green returned later that day with a new arrangement. This time, Aftab heard something different.
Drawing from poetry written by her friend, Pakistani writer Yasra Rizvi, she began singing in Urdu, building each line naturally around the music while Green developed the now-familiar guitar riff alongside her. Both artists have spoken about the almost hushed excitement in the room as the track slowly came together, realising they had stumbled upon something far more meaningful than either had expected.
For Green, it became the moment the entire album started to make sense.
That sense of openness runs through Distance in Static. Alongside Arooj Aftab, the record features an impressive lineup of collaborators including Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya, Ichiko Aoba, Nicole Miglis, Aanya Martin and Kanako Yamamoto. Across its fourteen tracks, Bonobo moves effortlessly between English, Urdu and Japanese lyrics while incorporating historic Iranian samples and the delicate sound of the guzheng. Rather than presenting these influences as separate ideas, he allows them to exist together, creating an album that feels connected through emotion instead of geography.
If Fire on the Water is the record's most intimate moment, Drift offers the opposite energy. Already becoming a favourite during Bonobo's recent DJ sets, the instrumental leans back into rhythm and movement, reminding listeners that while the producer has always excelled at creating reflective music, he has never lost his instinct for the dancefloor. Released together, the two tracks capture the full emotional spectrum of Distance in Static.
There is something refreshing about the way Bonobo continues to evolve. Twenty-five years into his career, he isn't trying to reinvent himself through bigger collaborations or louder production. Instead, he's making space for conversations between cultures, languages and artists, trusting that the strongest ideas don't always arrive on schedule.
Sometimes they appear after a failed first attempt, a walk outside and the willingness to listen a little more closely.
If Fire on the Water is any indication, Distance in Static won't simply be another Bonobo album. It feels like an artist still discovering new ways to tell stories, proving that some of the most memorable music isn't planned at all. It simply finds its moment.
