  • All About Homebrewing: The Art of Making Probiotic Fermented Beverages

by Rupashree Ravi All About Homebrewing: The Art of Making Probiotic Fermented Beverages 2 August 2022 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement From being gut-friendly and improving digestion to keeping you hydrated and healthy, there are a number of reasons why fermented beverages are finding favour with people all across the world. More and more people are drinking and making non-alcoholic beverages as it offers a host of benefits. Homebrewing, which is simply making beer or wine on a personal and small-scale level, is a hobby and a profession for many. The reason is, that it is high on flavour, low on alcohol, and does not require any fancy equipment. The process of fermenting and making probiotic drinks is very easy, anyone can do it. Homebrewing has become a great hobby and experiment that people are taking up in recent days. The basic idea is to brew a taste test batch of your favourite beverage at your home, be it Kombucha, Tepache, Ginger Beer, Red Table Wine, among a wide variety of options. It can be intimidating at first, but can be very rewarding, and cheap! All you really need is a big vessel, something fermentable, and some yeast. “There are a variety of beverages you can brew and once you get the basics down, it can be simple to add your own unique twist to a recipe.” A great way to start is by brewing a Hard Cider. The easiest method is crushing the juice from a batch of apples, putting it in a jug, and letting it ferment in a dark place for one to three weeks. Apple skins contain various natural yeasts, which end up in the apple juice when the fruit is pressed, but you can choose to add cider yeast which is great for fermentation. You can also add sugar and spices to enhance the taste. Another brewer’s favourite is the Kombucha, which is a great alternative to alcoholic beverages. It is naturally packed with probiotics and is made with water, tea, sugar, bacteria, and yeast. It starts out as a sugary tea, which is then fermented with the help of a SCOBY, an acronym for ‘Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast.’ It is refreshing, fizzy, slightly sour, and low in calories and sugar. You can ferment Kombucha for seven to ten days in a mason jar and close it shut with a tightly woven cloth and lid. Tepache is a fizzy fermented drink made from just pineapple skin, sugar, cinnamon, and water. Its taste can range from cider-like and sweet to yeasty like beer. The process is simple: add pineapple peels to a large jar, add sugar and cinnamon and drown them in water until the peels come to the surface of the jar. Let it ferment for one to three days. The longer it ferments, the less sweet and more yeast-flavoured it will become. You will know the tepache has fermented when you see many small bubbles on top. Refrigerate and enjoy your drink! A batch of Kombucha (left) and Tepache (right) kept for fermentation A sparking probiotic beverage that is very easy to make, Ginger Beer is a traditional remedy for nausea and digestion problems and is good for the throat. You will need to make a powerful fermented mixture, Ginger Bug to make this drink. The wild yeast or ginger bug is made by adding water, sugar, and finely chopped ginger to a glass container and letting it sit for twenty-four hours after stirring. Take the next two-three days to add the same amount of ginger and sugar every twenty-four hours until it becomes fizzy. Strain it and add lemon juice. Let it sit at room temperature for three to six days until it gets fizzy. Once they’ve reached that point, you can refrigerate them; but make sure you’re opening the top and burping them once a day. Ginger Beer and Red Table Wine are said to be great for health having healing properties To make a batch of Red Table Wine, add one cup of sugar into a bottle of purple grape juice, add a packet of wine yeast, pop in an airlock, and come back in a few weeks. Alternatively, you can add around three quarts of the juice to a glass jar, before adding six cups of sugar and a pack of yeast. With these amazing and easy-to-make beverages, you can start homebrewing some of your own in no time. It’s a healthy hobby and is definitely a skill that comes over a period of time. Ultimately, it will be worth all the time and effort. Moreover, it is the best way to take part in an age old tradition that stretches all the way back to the Neolithic! #Homebrewing #Fermentation #Probiotic #Kombucha #SCOBY #Tepache SEARCH How to keep your skin healthy naturally FOOD Fantasy breakfast FOOD All About Homebrewing: The Art of Making Probiotic Fermented Beverages FOOD Virgin Territory: These non-alcoholic thirst quenchers are mixologist approved FOOD Tasting the sunny side of Christmas: Christmas Cocktails FOOD POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement By Sakshi Shah Mumbai’s Take On Valentine’s, From Dinners To Sweet Endings 10 February 2026 FOOD By Shriniwas Kodape Breeze By Lebua State Tower: Duck Skin, Oolong, And The Distance Between Who You Are And Who You Were 9 September 2025 FOOD By Shriniwas Kodape China Table Restaurant At Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok: A Dim Sum Story At Dusk 7 September 2025 FOOD By Shriniwas Kodape The Blooming Gallery: A Fever Dream Of Matcha And Moss 15 August 2025 FOOD RELATED POSTS Advertisement

  • Women Empowerment A mere concept or a real Concern

SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Women Empowerment A mere concept or a real Concern 16 July 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement In India, this socially viable topic catches many eyeballs on discussion forums, political rallies and media galleries. We have often seen philanthropists, social entities or de crème de la crème of the society embellishing their views to fight for the profoundly rooted theories of Gender Equality, Equal participation, democratic decision making and most specifically Women Emancipation. But the recorded statistics provoke us to unleash the peel of these heated discussions which might sound very promising but lack the realistic angle. For instance, in many parts of our country sex ratio has dropped to fewer than 850 females per 1000 males. India is ranked 132 out of 148 countries on Gender Inequality Index as per the 2013 Global Human Development Report. The crimes against women fly directly against orchestrating women empowerment in India. A report on the crime against women by National Crime Records Bureau justifies the statement with some alarming facts and figures: Crime Head – % Variation in 2012 over 2011 Rape (Sec.376 IPC) – 3% Kidnapping & Abduction (Sec.363 to 373 IPC) – 7.6 % Torture (Sec.498-A IPC) – 7.5 % Dowry Death (Sec. 302/304 IPC) – 4.5 % Molestation (Sec.354 IPC) – 5.5 % Sexual Harassment (Sec. 509 IPC) – 7.0% Importation of Girls (Sec 366 – B IPC) – 26.3% This ironical phase of Women Empowerment is the central protagonist of our concern. We have a sense that holistic development cannot be imagined without the vigorous participation of women but like a silent admirer we are calmly supporting the fragmentary concept of Marginalization. No matter what our esteemed leaders said or done. But women have always been marginalized and ostracized as undesirable members of our society. No forum has been constructed to rationalize the Tag of “Second Citizen” which we bestow to this clique of women. Societal prism gives a stereotypical account of Empowerment which defines- “Empowerment” is the mere craftsmanship of an environment where women can make independent decisions on their personal development as well as shine as equals in society. But this definition does not channelize a concrete route which could actually lead women to this illusory environment. In spite of having epic discussion on this topic, this marginalized group is deprived of the mainstay of Empowerment i.e. Pride of Self Accomplishment and Self Supporting. Often Empowerment is seen as a force from the outer world like NGOs, Social groups or Govt. who stretches their hands to this neglected clan, but this disquieting issue cannot be faded without encouraging and developing skills for, Self Sufficiency, with a spotlight on eliminating the future need of any superficial assistance. For instance, instead of equipping them with peripheral aid, this band of victims must be encouraged to create their own non-profits organisation, using the rationale that only these marginalized people, themselves, can know their own people need most, that control of the organization must be centralized in their hands only. If women were empowered to take dynamic partaking in the organized sectors of the society, the possibility for economic growth becomes perceptible. Empowering women in developing countries is critical to curtail global poverty since women represent most of the world’s poor population. Eliminating a significant part of the nation’s workforce on the sole basis of gender can have detrimental effects on the economy of that nation. In addition, female participation in counsels, groups, and businesses is seen to aggrandize competence. For a general idea on how an empowered women can impact a framework monetarily, a study found that of Fortune 500 companies, “those with more women board directors had significantly higher financial returns, including 53% higher returns on equity, 24% higher return on sales and 67% higher returns on invested capital (OECD, 2008).This study shows the impression that women can have all round economic benefits of a Co. If implemented strategically on a global scale, the inclusion of women in the formal workforce can provide an edge to the economic productivity of a nation. But as discussed in the initial episodes of this article, there are several challenges that are currently plaguing the issues of women’s rights in India. The native goal of empowerment can only be achieved by targeting these issues. Studies of this paradigm say – Education is the core element that can either make or mar the authenticity of empowerment. While the country has grown from leaps and bounds since its independence where education is concerned, the gap between women and men is ruthless. While 82.14% of adult men are educated, only 65.46% of adult women are known to be literate in India. Not only is an illiterate woman damsels in distress but aloof from the errands of this cosmetic world. Additionally, the norms of culture that title the man as the alpha and omega of family decisions are gradually spoiling the society of the country. Poverty is considered the greatest threat to peace in the world, and due to hopeless poverty, women are exploited as domestic helps and wives whose incomes are usurped by the man of the house. Even the horrifying reality of sex slaves are a direct outcome of poverty only. The third pal of these two unpromising causes is Health & Safety. The health & safety concern of women are paramount for the wellbeing of a country, and most importantly a vital factor in gauging the empowerment of women in a country. However there are threatening statistics where maternal healthcare is concerned In its 2009 report, UNICEF came up with shocking figures on the status of Indian mothers in India. The maternal mortality report of India stands at 301 per 1000, with as many as 78000 women in India dying of childbirth complications in that year. We can’t deny that there are several series of programmes that have been set into motion by the Govt. and several NGOs in the country to bridge up the dead pan gap between these gender conflicts but these external bodies can only conceal the problem. If we really want to get liberated of this dual world in terms of Gender, then, the strapping pole of Marginalization must be shunned and men oriented fiefdom syndrome must be broken into unbreakable pieces. In short, Empowerment is not an ostentatious or grandiloquence portrayal of outer self but an honest urge to get unshackled from the rotten dogmas of society and earn the power of “Self”. • The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom

The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom by Yashi Srivastava The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom 15 December 2022 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement India is a land of traditions that go thousands of years back. From Ayurveda to Yoga and festivals, even buttons, exhibit Her glorious culture, and a splendour that my country really is! Amongst the many spectacular factors that help India stand out from the western countries is the way Indians dressed – back in time. So, when we talk about Indian attire, there is no way that we wouldn’t talk about the exuberance that flow from the oldest Indian fabric used for weaving attires – handloom! Before the Britishers took over our beautiful country, Indians wore attired made only from handloom fabric. So, yes, the history and heritage of Indian handloom goes way back in time and in this article, we shall throw some light on the rich history of Indian handloom. What is handloom? Handloom was originally a variety of wooden frames used by artisans to weave fabrics out of them. The fabrics usually came from natural fibre including cotton, wool, jute, silk, etc. The procedure involved spinning the yarn followed by coloring to weaving the fabric on the loom – the final product came to be known as handloom. The history of Indian handloom – Early Days The history of Indian handloom takes us back to the Indus Valley civilization, when the first evidence of the fabric came up. Ancient India was the only producer of raw cotton and even exported the same to other countries, including Rome, China, and European nations. In fact, back in the time, every village in the country has its own weavers who spent hours in making attires like saree and dhoti to fulfil the clothing needs of the villagers. The beauty of the time was that the Indian handloom, in its beginning, was the purest material and the same showed when people wore it. The history of Indian handloom – The Gandhian Era Even though India enjoyed a golden phase of handloom heritage, its popularity went down once British took over the country. In order to increase the consumption and production of the yarn, Britishers used violence and coercion on the workers and weavers. The machine-made imported yarn made it difficult for the poor workers to keep up with the production, and thus, led to the downfall of the fabric. Most workers started working for the middlemen and traders, and the authenticity of Indian handloom shook to the core. However, during the Gandhian era, the age of handlooms was revived through Swadeshi Movement, where Mahatma Gandhi re-introduced the spinning wheel or ‘charkha’ to continue the production of khadi products. Since every Indian was involved in spinning the ‘charkha,’ the economy of the country saw a massive upgrade! People burnt the imported clothes and wore khadi everywhere, which even led to closing of mills in Manchester. The history of Indian handloom – Post Independence Even after India earned Her independence, textile industry continued to bloom and different weaving styles and fabrics were introduced. Even though, handloom didn’t rise exactly as high as it did before British colonisation, it was still widely used. The beauty of Indian handloom today Today, the cost of natural fibre is blowing by leaps and bounds because most people are not interested in buying the same these days. Most Indians prefer cheaper fabric and don’t really connect with the rich heritage of Indian handlooms. Khadi products, today, have a high cost, in comparison to other materials, and thus, not many regular people in India can afford to buy the fabric. Even so, the beauty of Indian handloom is unmatchable and still boasts of rich tradition and glorious past of our country. Even though the original Indian handloom cannot compete with the poly-mixed products that are way cheaper, the timelessness of handloom will always carry the hard work and skills of Indian craftsman from the past. Conclusion It is all right to say that the popularity of Indian handloom is only vanishing since the time we earned independence. The beautiful handloom deserves a place in the present as much as it did in the past. So, let’s work our bit to bring the true Indian attire back into business. Blob - The beauty of Indian handloom is such that goes back to the Indus Valley civilization, and even though, it faces tough competition from the poly-mix fibre today, the fabric has withheld a place of its own. • Why India is the most depressed country in the world?

SOCIETY by Anadi Gupta Why India is the most depressed country in the world? 1 September 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement India is the world’s most depressed country and we don’t talk about it as much as we talk about other diseases, but you’ll be shocked to know that 300 million people worldwide are suffering from depression. Depression and bad mental health have been ignored as a serious issue since ages. Mental health is as important as physical health but sadly nobody takes it as a serious illness and avoid talking about it. People in India still take it as a taboo. A study reported in WHO, conducted for the National Care Of Medical Health, states that at least 6.5 per cent of the Indian population suffers from some form of the serious mental disorder, in spite of the rural-urban differences. Though there are effective measures and treatments, there is an extreme shortage of doctors and mental health workers like psychologists and psychiatrists. As reported latest in 2014, it was as low as ”one in 100,000 people”. The average suicide rate in India is 10.9 for every one lakh people and the majority of people who commit suicide are below 44 years of age. According to these data, India is in a serious mental health crisis but the attitude which Indians show towards it is not helpful at all. It won’t make any change. A major part of population of India is highly judgmental towards those who have any kind of mental illness. They don’t like to talk to such people because they think it will affect their mental health too. According to the surveys the people who understand it come from good socio-economic environment and are highly educated. The young kids are coming forward to support many mental health campaigns because they understand and are facing stress a lot. India has less resources and more population but one of the main aspects in which we highly fail is the stereotypical thinking of the people who live here. People still are blinded by the fake traditions and rituals. But depression is a serious mental illness which should be taken seriously otherwise it can cause long lasting severe feelings of sadness, hopelessness and loneliness. There can be different symptoms for different people and it can also be differentiated according to gender. Many people mistook depression for sadness but it is more than just being sad and lonely. Symptoms of it can last from months to years. A person with depression cannot find pleasure or joy in anything. It gets very difficult for one to start a day and get off from the bed. There is just so much hopelessness in everything they do. Everything seems so tiring and difficult. If you see a person like this please tell him to get help if needed and get a proper treatment otherwise it may result in us losing another life. Spread awareness against it, try to make people aware everywhere that mental peace and stability is the most important thing. Many celebrities are now breaking stereotypes and coming forward to talk about it publicly so people can realize its effects. Many mental health foundations are doing great work for the cause. And we can now only hope for things to get better. SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world? Throw in the colors According to many stylists, the best colors to wear on a date are black, blue, red, and white. While we agree with them, we want you to experiment with many yellows, oranges, and greens. For example, how about exhibiting this bright yellow skirt with a floral yet funky slim jacket and casual white top? You can match the same with super-chic sneakers or black heels as well. Extra points for leaving your hair open and carefree with those stylish shades and minimal make-up. If you like this combination, you would love this printed dress that encompasses countless colors that are vibrant in every sense of the world. Pairing this dress with either loose hair or a relaxed fishtail would give you a look with this feminine dress. The look will quadruple your style statement if you wear heeled boots in a shade of brown. You must, however, always choose to wear shoes that you feel comfortable there. You got the idea, right? 2. Keep it simple but sexy Many teen girls don’t appreciate the idea of garnering too much attention on their first date. It is quite understandable since you are only breaking into the dating world. So, it is excellent to keep it soft, supple, and straightforward, but to make a statement of your own; you have to make it all sexy. So, how about this gorgeous combo of a brick-red halter top and linen high-waisted black skirt? It is simple, comfy, and subtle with a touch of sexy, and that’s precisely how you would like it! With this pairing, you can make a loose plait or twist and fold your hair while letting them go wherever they want. To add a pinch of calm, you wear converse with visible socks or classy flats, peep toes, or simple heels to go with it. Here’s another idea for you to bring sexy with your simple! All you have to do is get your hands on a grey or a dull-brown fit and flare dress and fuse it with a lace shrug. You can also accentuate the look by wearing thin-rimmed glasses with elegant earrings, a pretty necklace, or a choker. An elegant anklet won’t hurt when paired with casual chappals or flats. 3. Monotone Aesthetic When nothing makes sense, go mono! In other words, you can never go wrong with a monotone dress, co-ed, or whatever keeps your vibe flowing. For example, check out this gorgeous all-pink bodycon dress coordinated with silver-rimmed black sunglasses. You can choose the shades that go well with your face and leave your hair open, clip them up, or go for a loose bun. Now the footwear could be anything from flats to wedges to heels and even white Nike sneakers to go with it – you will look spectacular in any of those! About the make-up part, we’d tell you to choose dark and smoky eyes with nude lipstick, and you would blow their minds! 4. Class it up with layers! Every young girl knows how classy it is to ensemble your fashion statement in layers and how challenging it is to pull them off on your first date! If you want to do it right, here’s another idea! Our pick is this shoulder tunic blouse blended with a stunning corset belt. Wear khaki trousers or regular jeans for the bottom, and you will be good to go! We believe you can go for sneakers or stompers with this one, but many girls would love to wear elegant flats with flowy trousers or so! With this one, you can add charm bracelets, hoop earrings, a nose pin, or a watch. Minimal make-up with nude lips is undoubtedly the way to go with! Not to forget, a messy or top bun would amp up this look, but we believe it is eventually the style you feel most comfortable in! 5. So, what would be an ideal black fit for a perfect date night? Since we are talking about the color of all seasons, it would be only fair to add ideas to your wardrobe. So, let’s go for a look that would work breathtakingly well on a winter night. You must get a body-hugging top and wear it with black tights or skinny-fit jeans with knee-length black boots. • Mumbai’s Take On Valentine’s, From Dinners To Sweet Endings

By Sakshi Shah Mumbai’s Take On Valentine’s, From Dinners To Sweet Endings 10 February 2026 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Valentine’s in Mumbai doesn’t come with one fixed mood. Some plans are quiet and intimate, some are social and playful, and some are decided at the very last minute. This edit brings together places across the city that fit all of those moments, whether you’re planning a proper dinner, a Galentine’s night out, or ending the evening with something sweet to take home. Some restaurants are leaning into special Valentine’s menus, others simply feel romantic by nature. What they all have in common is atmosphere, intention, and the kind of setting that makes the day feel a little more special without forcing it. Ammakai , Bandra Shared Valentine Ammakai keeps Valentine’s beautifully simple with a thoughtfully curated set menu served on a single shared banana leaf. Available in vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, the experience is rooted in homely flavours and togetherness. It’s slow, comforting, and quietly romantic, perfect for couples or close friends who prefer meaningful moments over grand gestures. Soraia , Mahalaxmi Slow romance Soraia’s FLORA menu is inspired by nature, growth, and subtle emotion. The dining experience feels calm and intentional, unfolding gently from fresh beginnings to deeper, grounded flavours. Ideal for couples who enjoy unhurried meals, soft conversations, and a Valentine’s that feels thoughtful rather than performative. Scarlett House , Bandra & Juhu Cinematic love Scarlett House turns Valentine’s into a story. Its Love, Actually edit draws inspiration from iconic romantic films, translating familiar narratives into playful plates and cocktails. Nostalgic, immersive, and full of personality, this is a great choice for those who like their Valentine’s a little dramatic but still warm and familiar. Blondie , Bandra Modern date vibes Blondie offers a relaxed, contemporary take on Valentine’s dining. With a menu that moves from fresh starters to indulgent comfort plates and inventive cocktails, it works equally well for couples and Galentine’s plans. Lively without being overwhelming, it’s perfect for a fun, easygoing evening. FOO , Multiple Locations Light & flirty Foo keeps things playful this Valentine’s. From sparkling wine pairings to chocolate-coated strawberries and bold cocktails, the experience feels festive without being overdone. A great option for a casual celebration, a quick toast, or plans that come together spontaneously. Gallops , Mahalaxmi Racecourse Classic romance Few places in Mumbai do old-school romance like Gallops. With its colonial charm, candlelit tables, and serene racecourse views, it’s made for long dinners and meaningful conversations. A timeless choice for couples who appreciate tradition and understated elegance. Cecconi’s , Soho House Mumbai Effortless Italian Cecconi’s brings an easy sophistication to Valentine’s dining. Warm interiors, comforting Italian classics, and a relaxed yet polished atmosphere make it ideal for intimate evenings. It’s special without feeling staged, which is exactly why it works so well. Koko , Mumbai High-drama dining Koko leans fully into Valentine’s indulgence with a curated set menu that moves from refined starters and sushi to bold mains and a decadent chocolate-forward dessert finale. Paired with sparkling wine and crafted cocktails, it’s perfect for couples who enjoy flavour, flair, and a sense of occasion. Fielia , Mahalaxmi Galentine’s energy Fielia approaches Valentine’s with a playful twist through its Galentine’s House Party and Valentine’s nights. With DJs on the decks, flowing cocktails, and an indulgent à la carte menu, it’s all about music, mood, and unapologetic fun. Ideal for a girly night out that feels spontaneous and celebratory. Bastian at the Top , Dadar Dessert indulgence For those who want to end their Valentine’s on a sweet, playful note, Bastian at the Top offers a dessert-led experience that’s both indulgent and Instagram-friendly. From vibrant plating to imaginative creations, it’s perfect for couples who want a treat that feels fun, luxurious, and a little whimsical, an experience that turns dessert into the main event. Creme Cookies , Mumbai Last-minute love For plans that come together at the very last minute, Creme Cookies is the perfect save. Known for its indulgent Chonkies filled with chocolate, Nutella, and strawberries, it’s an easy takeaway option that brings Valentine’s straight home. Casual, comforting, and instantly satisfying. The Takeaway Valentine’s doesn’t need to look the same for everyone. Whether it’s a shared set menu, a cinematic dinner, cocktails with friends, or a box of cookies on the couch, the best plans are the ones that feel natural. Because sometimes, the sweetest endings are the simplest ones.
