  • Labels are to be stuck on goods, not on people

by Aparajita Jaiswal Labels are to be stuck on goods, not on people 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Labels, growing up we’ve heard this word for over a thousand times, put the label on chart honey, the price is on the label sir, and many more diverse examples. The thing that we learned the hard way, was that those labels are also stuck on our bodies, our existence, and our whole selves. And the worst part is that these petty labels are stuck by someone else. Human society has an integral concept of putting labels on things they have no say in, things that they should not bother themselves with yet they do engage in this activity. The intrinsic need to have that much control over everything comes out of habit, out of the need to stay with one another in the early stages of human development. But, as time grew, and our bodies evolved and left these inseparable marks in the construct of societies. These labels are put on us right from the minute we are born, the minute our little bodies leave our mother’s safe womb there awaits the band of labels waiting to be stuck on our bodies. This band of labels prolifers into a herd as we grow up. The primary labels are divided into the binary gender system that society believes to be solely existing in this world. Being any of the two genders, there are expectations that our society has from us. A little girl must learn to be polite, silent, and obedient. A teenage girl must be an expert at cooking, staying away from a sparkling social life, and most importantly should be homebound. A woman on the other hand must be fostering every person in her family and should prioritize everyone above her. When they fail to perform even one of these expectations they are suddenly labeled as ungrateful, selfish, and self-centered. Little boys are taught that they should not cry, for crying is the virtue of a girl. Teenage boys are conditioned to choose a career path that could land them tons of money. A man on the other hand should be robust, they should be quick to change a tire at the roadside, they should take care of every financial need whatsoever. Similarly, when they fail to uphold these virtues that society has their tags to hook on you, labels to stick to your existence, and judgments to lay off. Men are called feminine, irresponsible, and a lot of other slangs challenging their manhood if they go against the architecture of societal emotions. The question arises in curious minds that why do these labels exist, why they have been nurtured over centuries, why these things were not removed when we got educated enough? The problem is when we evolved from our biological needs into functioning independent adults, there was always a trace of knowledge that was missing in our minds. All of these attributes that we were subjected to, once used to serve humans as their boat in this sea of life. The glitch is that they didn’t know we could swim through this ocean with our very own hands and legs. That this life is just an act of self-dependence was a very later discovery, until then damage was done. The man had developed an ego, status, and the fact that some people were going against the piece of information they sought was offensive to them. As a result, they started oppression of people they thought could go out of their hands. they specified everyone’s virtues as they pleased and decided labels to ascertain when people don’t obey. Their first target was to suppress women, as they in their sense knew what an epitome of power she is. The one who can create a seed of life can surely rebel against them and show the world the right way. And to stop men from supporting them in any way, they traced a set of tags. Tags so nascent that they will cease the support at once. This seems like a plausible explanation for all these things. Apart from these binary labels, many labels are stuck to our existence in certain specific situations and beliefs. The LGBTQ community is the first slap to their binary understanding. There had and is still prevailing an incessant urge to demolish their community as non-existent, that their orientation is just blurred and that it is against God’s creation that they are living this sinful life. The next is the labels given on the basis of Skin color, the whites are supposed to be the fairer and better race than the darker. Their supremacy has no logical explanation in any terms but these labels still haunt society to this very day. These realms of labels and tags don’t cease, it is present at the vibrance of variants in each specific society. A notion should be held on whether these are required, whether they leave a good impact on one’s mental health, etc. The answers to any of these questions do not go affirmatively. There must be understanding that these labels are downright suicidal to someone, suffocating to others, and mind-numbing to one. We should understand that we are no one to label one person, it’s not a diagram of the nervous system to be labeled but a human being’s mental health that we play along the lines. Thus, it is our duty as a society to be vigilant and responsible to a person. • The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom

by Yashi Srivastava The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom 15 December 2022 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement India is a land of traditions that go thousands of years back. From Ayurveda to Yoga and festivals, even buttons, exhibit Her glorious culture, and a splendour that my country really is! Amongst the many spectacular factors that help India stand out from the western countries is the way Indians dressed – back in time. So, when we talk about Indian attire, there is no way that we wouldn’t talk about the exuberance that flow from the oldest Indian fabric used for weaving attires – handloom! Before the Britishers took over our beautiful country, Indians wore attired made only from handloom fabric. So, yes, the history and heritage of Indian handloom goes way back in time and in this article, we shall throw some light on the rich history of Indian handloom. What is handloom? Handloom was originally a variety of wooden frames used by artisans to weave fabrics out of them. The fabrics usually came from natural fibre including cotton, wool, jute, silk, etc. The procedure involved spinning the yarn followed by coloring to weaving the fabric on the loom – the final product came to be known as handloom. The history of Indian handloom – Early Days The history of Indian handloom takes us back to the Indus Valley civilization, when the first evidence of the fabric came up. Ancient India was the only producer of raw cotton and even exported the same to other countries, including Rome, China, and European nations. In fact, back in the time, every village in the country has its own weavers who spent hours in making attires like saree and dhoti to fulfil the clothing needs of the villagers. The beauty of the time was that the Indian handloom, in its beginning, was the purest material and the same showed when people wore it. The history of Indian handloom – The Gandhian Era Even though India enjoyed a golden phase of handloom heritage, its popularity went down once British took over the country. In order to increase the consumption and production of the yarn, Britishers used violence and coercion on the workers and weavers. The machine-made imported yarn made it difficult for the poor workers to keep up with the production, and thus, led to the downfall of the fabric. Most workers started working for the middlemen and traders, and the authenticity of Indian handloom shook to the core. However, during the Gandhian era, the age of handlooms was revived through Swadeshi Movement, where Mahatma Gandhi re-introduced the spinning wheel or ‘charkha’ to continue the production of khadi products. Since every Indian was involved in spinning the ‘charkha,’ the economy of the country saw a massive upgrade! People burnt the imported clothes and wore khadi everywhere, which even led to closing of mills in Manchester. The history of Indian handloom – Post Independence Even after India earned Her independence, textile industry continued to bloom and different weaving styles and fabrics were introduced. Even though, handloom didn’t rise exactly as high as it did before British colonisation, it was still widely used. The beauty of Indian handloom today Today, the cost of natural fibre is blowing by leaps and bounds because most people are not interested in buying the same these days. Most Indians prefer cheaper fabric and don’t really connect with the rich heritage of Indian handlooms. Khadi products, today, have a high cost, in comparison to other materials, and thus, not many regular people in India can afford to buy the fabric. Even so, the beauty of Indian handloom is unmatchable and still boasts of rich tradition and glorious past of our country. Even though the original Indian handloom cannot compete with the poly-mixed products that are way cheaper, the timelessness of handloom will always carry the hard work and skills of Indian craftsman from the past. Conclusion It is all right to say that the popularity of Indian handloom is only vanishing since the time we earned independence. The beautiful handloom deserves a place in the present as much as it did in the past. So, let’s work our bit to bring the true Indian attire back into business. Blob - The beauty of Indian handloom is such that goes back to the Indus Valley civilization, and even though, it faces tough competition from the poly-mix fibre today, the fabric has withheld a place of its own. • Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston

by Priti Sharma Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston 18 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement The Southeast Asian city of Angkor, famous for the Angkor Wat temple, had between 700,000 and 900,000 residents in the 13th century. With this number, Angkor becomes one of the biggest cities before the modern era. It's also comparable in size to many modern cities; Boston, for example, had around 693,000 residents in 2019. The city’s remains, currently in northwest Cambodia, are well-known for their stone temples, structures, and infrastructure. With the use of scanning technology, archaeologists could spot the remains of buildings made of wood and less resilient materials outside Angkor's "downtown" region. They have vanished without a trace since the majority of their structures were built of wood, thatch, and bamboo. The remnants of Yasodharapura's walls, reservoirs, roadways, and, most importantly, its religious structures—which were constructed of stone and laterite to worship the Buddha or a pantheon of Indian gods—are how we learned about this city that was abandoned in the sixteenth century. When Angkor Wat was first constructed, Suryavarman II was a strong ruler who used it as both a mausoleum and a monument. Over a square mile is devoted to the Vishnu shrine. The Ramayana, an Indian epic, as well as incidents from Suryavarman's life are shown in the base relief's exquisite carving. They also display the god of the underworld, Yama, sending people to heaven or to hell. A sophisticated culture, "Angkor" had its rulers at the top of the social hierarchy. The majority of those who constructed the temples and produced sustenance for the aristocracy were rice farmers, and they employed methods that have largely remained unchanged to the current day. The Khmer people were skilled carpenters and gifted stone and wood carvers. Impressive reservoirs and razor-sharp roadways connecting Cambodian cities were built by Khmer engineers, and many of the temples still bear intricate inscriptions that were written by Khmer poets. Warriors from Cambodia assaulted nearby kingdoms and guarded Yasodharapura against invasion. Many of these "ordinary" contributions are overlooked when we visit the temples or see the ethereal traditional dance of Cambodia. After Jayavarman's demise, Yasodharapura continued to be a magnificent and rich city for at least two hundred years. Following a Thai army assault in 1431, it was mostly abandoned. Soon after, the center of government in Cambodia moved to the south. A Cambodian monarch visited the old city in the 1500s, repaired a few temples, and presumably spent some time living in Yasodharapura. Angkor Wat was often visited by pilgrims, and a Buddhist monastery stood next to the temple for many years. However, Yasodharapura was abandoned by the outside world, and the jungle gradually took it over. The amazingly creative and engineering prowess that the ruins show makes up for its "heritage." In addition to the open-minded, resourceful, and tough people who struggle to make ends meet in their impoverished, congested country while keeping testimony to their magnificent heritage, these abilities are on display today in Cambodian classical dance. A tropical metropolis, Angkor endured centuries of political and climatic unpredictability. Urban planners may be able to better grasp some of the limitations that an increasing number of the world's cities confront by tracking the phenomenon's development and tipping point. • Vitiligo's Representation In Fashion

By Anushka Sharma Vitiligo's Representation In Fashion 15 March 2024 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement In recent years, the fashion industry has made significant strides in embracing diversity and inclusivity, challenging traditional beauty standards and celebrating individuality. One of the most notable shifts has been the increased representation of individuals with vitiligo, a skin condition characterized by the loss of pigment in certain areas of the skin, resulting in white patches. Historically, the fashion industry has been criticized for its narrow portrayal of beauty, often favoring models with flawless, uniform skin tones. However, in a welcome departure from this norm, many fashion brands and designers have begun to cast models with vitiligo, recognizing the unique beauty and strength they bring to the runway. One of the pioneers in promoting vitiligo representation in fashion is the late model Winnie Harlow. Discovered on the hit television show "America's Next Top Model," Harlow has since become a prominent figure in the fashion world, using her platform to raise awareness about vitiligo and advocate for greater inclusivity in the industry. Her success has inspired other models with vitiligo to pursue careers in fashion, breaking down barriers and challenging perceptions along the way. Fashion brands have also played a crucial role in promoting diversity by featuring models with vitiligo in their campaigns and runway shows. From high-end luxury labels to mainstream retailers, brands are increasingly embracing models of all skin types and colors, reflecting the diverse spectrum of beauty in society. Beyond the runway, vitiligo representation in fashion has also extended to advertising and marketing campaigns. Major beauty brands have featured models with vitiligo in their advertisements, sending a powerful message of acceptance and empowerment to consumers around the world. These campaigns not only promote diversity but also help to destigmatize skin conditions like vitiligo, encouraging individuals to embrace their unique characteristics with confidence. In addition to fostering greater representation, the fashion industry has also seen a rise in the creation of clothing lines specifically designed for individuals with vitiligo. These lines often feature garments with innovative designs and color-blocking techniques, helping individuals with vitiligo to feel more comfortable and confident in their clothing choices. Furthermore, the rise of social media has provided a platform for individuals with vitiligo to share their stories and connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. Through platforms like Instagram and YouTube, influencers and advocates with vitiligo have been able to amplify their voices, raising awareness and promoting acceptance in the fashion community and beyond. While progress has undoubtedly been made, there is still much work to be done to ensure that individuals with vitiligo are fully represented and included in the fashion industry. This includes not only increasing visibility on the runway and in advertising but also advocating for greater accessibility and inclusivity in the design and production of clothing. In conclusion, vitiligo's representation in fashion marks a significant step forward in the ongoing journey towards greater diversity and inclusivity. By celebrating the beauty of individuality and challenging traditional beauty standards, the fashion industry has the power to inspire change and foster a more inclusive society for all. • Cancel Culture

by Akash Khatri Cancel Culture 1 November 2020 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Cancel culture, a social media phenomenon where active social media users seek to remove the clout of a celebrity who says or does something offensive by ‘cancelling’ them. Basically, the ‘cancel’ here means to cancel out or end a person’s career in reaction to his or her unacceptable behaviour or action. For instance, if there is a celebrity or any public figure who makes a misogynistic, racist, casteist, or sexist statement or commits an act of sexual crime, there could be calls to boycott the actor’s films and other works, exile him or her from all public events and disconnect the person from all the social alliances. As a result, the person is ‘cancelled’ culturally, socially, economically and politically. There are two types of cancel culture, first one a call-out culture. Here, the responsible individual is mortified publicly on social media for his or her statements and the resulting outcry hold them accountable for their fallacy. The second variant is more serious. Here, the celebrity is called out on social media and a larger mass boycotts his or her products or services, eventually bringing a full stop to their careers. Most of the times it gets much wider and substantial or controversial but the immense recognition cancel culture enjoys, especially among teenagers and young adults, makes it one of the most controlling movements in recent times. One of the main critiques of cancel culture is that it’s making people more bigoted, quick to judge and banish those who even slightly disagree with them. Cancel culture doesn’t leave any room for constructive discourse because social media users often deliver a quick decision, based on a snap judgment, to a celebrity they view as offensive — leaving no opportunity for them to put forward their explanation on their act and make their case against their own ‘cancellation.’ But people tend to forget — whether a celebrity is canceled or not, it is up to the celebrity themself, not on those wanting to cancel them. Though targeting someone will not just affect them, but their mental health and the livelihood of many related to them, and that’s not just. However, ending someone’s career completely is easier said than done. Not many entities have had their careers completely shut down due to the negative views on the internet. Actor and activist Jameela Jamil, has said that this phenomenon is a “pointless waste of time.” But, then again, the term is utilsed among so many, that to figure out if the phenomenon is negative or positive have been made indistinct. The principal questions are: Has social media simply given another name to something that is going to exist for a lifetime? Does this phenomenon really exist when cancelling someone doesn’t mostly work forever? Does the idea of being cancelled stop awful content? Or is it just another trend that is being followed blindly?
