  • Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie

Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie by Aparajita Jaiswal Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie 1 May 2021 FASHION Advertisement Among many of our favourite luxury brand designers, Thomas Carlyle Ford, an American fashion designer and filmmaker, is truly one of the most inspiring and looked upon creators of fashion. He launched his eponymous luxury brand in 2006, having previously served as the creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Ford currently also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Tom Ford had quite the journey, figuring out his interests. At age 16, he enrolled at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, but quickly dropped out. He moved to New York City to study art history at New York University where he met Ian Falconer, who took him to Studio 54 for the first time, spiking his interest in acting and directing. Ford dropped out after a year, focusing on acting in television commercials. Ford began studying interior architecture at The New School’s art and design college, Parsons, in New York City. He kept visiting Studio 54, where he realized he was gay. The club’s disco-era glamor ended up being a major influence on his later designs. Before his last year at New School, Ford spent a year and a half in Paris, where he worked as an intern in Chloé’s press office, inspiring his interest in fashion. He spent his final year at The New School studying fashion, but graduated with a degree in architecture. In an interview with The New York Times, Ford said, “If I was ever going to become a good designer, I had to leave America. My own culture was inhibiting me. Too much style in America is tacky. It’s looked down upon to be too stylish. Europeans, however, appreciate style.” At the time, Italian fashion house Gucci was struggling financially and was seeking to strengthen its women’s ready-to-wear presence as a part of a brand overhaul. The company’s creative director, Dawn Mello hired Ford as the brand’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer in 1990 and Ford moved to Milan. “I was talking to a lot of people, and most didn’t want the job,” Mello said. “For an American designer to move to Italy to join a company that was far from being a brand would have been pretty risky.” Ford’s role at Gucci rapidly expanded; he was designing menswear within six months, and shoes soon after that. He also took over Richard Lambertson left as design director in 1992, heading the brand’s ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising, and store design. In 1993, when he was in charge of designing eleven product lines, Ford worked eighteen-hour days. Although there were creative tensions between Ford and Maurizio Gucci, the company’s chairman and 50% owner, inspiring Maurizio Gucci wanted to fire Ford, Domenico De Sole insisted that he remain. Nonetheless, Ford’s work during the early 1990s was primarily behind the scenes; his contributions to Gucci were overshadowed by those of Mello, who was the company’s public face. In 1994, Ford was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci. By 1999, the house, which had been almost bankrupt when Ford joined, was valued at more than $4 billion. When Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1999, Ford was named Creative Director of that label as well. In April 2004, Ford parted ways with the Gucci group after he and CEO Domenico de Sole, who is credited as Ford’s partner in Gucci’s success, failed to agree with Pinault Printemps Redoute’s boss over control of the Group. He has since referred to this experience as “devastating” and as a “midlife crisis” because he had “put everything into that for fifteen years”. When Ford left in 2004, Gucci Group was valued at $10 billion, hiring four individuals to split the work Ford had done. After leaving Gucci, Ford launched a line of menswear, beauty, eyewear, and accessories in 2006, named after himself, “Tom Ford”. De Sole became chairman of the label. Ford has described “the Tom Ford customer” as international, cultured, well-traveled, and possessing disposable income. For women, he added “strong and intelligent women who know their own style”. From the time we’re born until we die, we’re kept busy with artificial stuff that isn’t important. Tom Ford First Lady Michelle Obama wore an ivory floor-length evening gown designed by Ford to Buckingham Palace in 2011. He has also dressed Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, Julianne Moore, Hugh Jackman, Jon Hamm, and Henry Cavill. Ford designed Daniel Craig’s suits for his last three James Bond films: Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. Jay Z released a song titled “Tom Ford” with “Tom Ford” rapped numerous times within the song. Ford responded that he was flattered and “it means that one has really penetrated and made an impact on popular culture.” Following the song’s release, Ford received a huge spike in online search engine queries. Ford has been called a “fashion icon” and a “style icon” and he was included in “All-TIME 100 Fashion Icons” list. Ford has been included in several best-dressed lists, such as International Best Dressed List,The Guardian’s “The 50 best-dressed over-50s”, and British GQ’s “50 Best Dressed Men in Britain 2015”. He was featured on the cover of the 2011 spring/summer issue of Another Man, giving his opinion on what makes the modern day gentleman. He won several awards including several VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards and Council of Fashion Designers of America. Ford is known for sexy clothes, making provocative statements, and creating racy advertisements. Ford’s designs convey a “sophisticated sex appeal” and he has been credited for “bringing sexy back”. His advertisement campaigns have drawn controversy for use of nudity and “provocative sexual imagery”. Ford is also known to pose with celebrities and models in his ad campaigns. Ford is not only a designer but also a creative artist. Ford directed the Academy Award-nominated films A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals. In March 2005, Ford announced the launch of his film production company, Fade to Black. In 2009 he made his directorial debut with A Single Man, based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. The drama stars Colin Firth as an LA-based, gay college professor, alongside Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult and Matthew Goode. The novel was adapted by David Scearce and Ford; Ford was also one of the producers. In 2015, Ford became attached to direct Nocturnal Animals, an adaptation of the Austin Wright novel Tony and Susan. The film was released in 2016. Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams played the lead roles of Tony and Susan. Michael Shannon, Armie Hammer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Isla Fisher co-starred in the film. The film received praise from critics, as well as winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. • Journeying Through Fashion And Self - Expression With Paranosh Irani

Journeying Through Fashion And Self - Expression With Paranosh Irani by Akshra Khandelwal Journeying Through Fashion And Self - Expression With Paranosh Irani 27 August 2023 FASHION Advertisement "Fashion is a variable, while style is a constant. Style expresses who I am in my way!" - These words resonate deeply with the vibrant soul that is Paranosh Irani. From the colourful realms of Instagram to the poised corridors of the fashion world, Paranosh has carved a niche uniquely hers. In an exclusive interview with our magazine, she unveils her journey, her inspirations, and the philosophy that drives her. With a radiant smile that mirrors her effervescent personality, Paranosh Irani delves into her roots, giving us a glimpse of her evolution as a digital content creator and social media influencer. "Who is Paranosh Irani?" she muses as if teasing us to embark on a journey of discovery. A journey began on Instagram, where she found her voice through a quirky-edgy take on Fashion, offering honest reviews and invaluable tips on skincare and makeup. Her audience is not just followers; they are comrades, fellow Unicorn enthusiasts who understand her affinity for the mythical creature that represents her spirit – unique, magical, and full of dreams. The sparkle in her eyes intensifies as she shares her thoughts on Fashion and style. "Fashion is a variable, while style is a constant," she asserts. To her, style is the canvas on which she paints her individuality. It's not about following trends but creating a tapestry of self-expression. A style icon in her own right, Paranosh draws inspiration from Iris Apfel, a nonagenarian fashion maven. The connection between the two might not be obvious at first glance, but the audacity to be oneself, no matter the age, forms the bridge between their worlds. As she traces her journey, it's evident that the path wasn't always bedecked with confidence and self-assuredness. "Since childhood, I always felt I had an 'out-of-the-box' factor to give back to the industry," she confesses. Yet, her path meandered, and she grappled with self-esteem issues. Only later, after enrolling in an image consulting course, her vision cleared. The world of Fashion and self-expression, which had seemed distant, became an open field of opportunities. "It brought back my love for fashion," she reminisces, a reminder that sometimes our passions only need a gentle nudge to return. The tale takes a twist as we learn of her dalliance with setting up an online platform for local boutiques, a project that remained in the shadows. It's a testament to the fact that not every venture blooms into the spotlight, but each contributes to the growth of the creative spirit. Against the backdrop of these endeavours, the idea of fashion blogging simmered, waiting for the right moment to take centre stage. Paranosh Irani took her rightful place in the digital realm like a phoenix rising from the ashes. The days of indecision were behind her, replaced by a conviction to chase her dreams relentlessly. "When people around me work 3-4 jobs, why can't I manage two?" She questions a statement that encapsulates her relentless determination. With Instagram as her launchpad, she embarked on a blogging journey, eventually expanding her presence to a WordPress blog account. Today, her digital footprint is a testament to her creative prowess. She has crafted a space uniquely hers with content that reflects her quirky-edgy perspective on Fashion, insightful reviews, skincare tips, and lifestyle musings. But she didn't stop there. Winner of the Femina Mrs Stylista Pageant 2018, she broke her barriers and shattered the glass ceiling. "This was the first time I had ever won something beauty-fashion related," she chuckles, her younger self amazed by the woman she's become. The tale would only be complete by acknowledging her media collaborations. Her styling videos have graced the digital pages of My Good Times, while her story has been told through the ink of Eatmy News, Creme Magazine, Making HERstory Again, and the airwaves of Radio One, Pune. A highlight that gleams with pride is her participation in the Born on Instagram program by Instagram itself, a validation of her influence and creativity. Beyond the digital realm, Paranosh has ventured into entrepreneurship. Her online business, www.theaccessorys.com , and her preloved fashion endeavour, ReHome ReLove, symbolise her enterprising spirit. They are also a reminder that her journey is as much about creating pathways for others as it is about personal growth. As the conversation draws closer, her dreams emerge on the horizon. An ambassador on a global stage for fashion week, representing her unique style to the world – that's the crescendo she envisions. Yet, amidst the aspirations, her message remains grounded and potent. "Don't give up; perceive, push your boundaries and carve your niche because no one is like you!" Paranosh Irani is more than an influencer; she's a storyteller, a dreamer, and a warrior of self-expression. Her journey reminds us that pursuing passion is not a linear path but a tapestry of experiences woven with threads of resilience, audacity, and unyielding belief. As we bid farewell to this effervescent creator, we are left with the anticipation of the many chapters she's yet to pen, the stories she's yet to tell, and the fashion she’s yet to conquer. • These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health

These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health By Anushka Sharma These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health 1 April 2024 FASHION Advertisement Fashion is like a thrilling roller coaster ride, isn't it? It's full of twists, turns, and unexpected surprises. However, did you know that some of those surprises lurking in your closet might not be so fun after all? Buckle up, because we're about to uncover the hidden dangers of fast fashion and trendy accessories. Fast fashion is like the speedy Gonzales of the clothing world. It churns out cheap clothes faster than you can say "fashion emergency." But here's the catch: those super affordable threads often come with a not-so-pleasant side effect. They're loaded with chemicals that can irritate your skin and even cause health issues. Think of it like wearing a toxic soup – definitely not a good look! Now, let's talk about everyone's favorite footwear: sneakers. They're comfy, stylish, and practically a fashion staple these days. But did you know that wearing sneakers too much can mess with your feet? Yep, it's true! They can throw off your posture and even lead to painful foot problems. So, while you're busy rocking those kicks, your poor feet might be silently screaming for a break. And then there are waist trainers – those trendy contraptions designed to give you that coveted hourglass figure. Sounds great, right? Well, not exactly. Sure, they might help you cinch your waist, but they can also wreak havoc on your body. From messing with your appetite to causing serious breathing issues, waist trainers are like the fashion equivalent of a tight squeeze. But let's not forget about the accessories, because they come with their own set of dangers too. Heavy earrings might look glam, but they can actually stretch out your earlobes or even cause them to split. Ouch! And those ill-fitting thongs? They can rub you the wrong way and leave you feeling seriously uncomfortable. So, what's a fashion-forward individual to do in a world full of wardrobe woes? Well, for starters, it's important to be mindful of what you're putting on your body. Opt for clothes made from natural materials whenever possible, and steer clear of anything that feels scratchy or uncomfortable. When it comes to footwear, choose shoes that offer both style and support. And don't forget to give your feet a break every now and then – they deserve it! As for accessories, go easy on the heavy earrings and make sure your thongs fit just right. And most importantly, listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it. Fashion should be fun and fabulous, not hazardous to your health. So, the next time you're getting dressed, remember to put safety first. After all, there's nothing more stylish than taking care of yourself! • Vitiligo's Representation In Fashion

Vitiligo's Representation In Fashion By Anushka Sharma Vitiligo's Representation In Fashion 15 March 2024 FASHION Advertisement In recent years, the fashion industry has made significant strides in embracing diversity and inclusivity, challenging traditional beauty standards and celebrating individuality. One of the most notable shifts has been the increased representation of individuals with vitiligo, a skin condition characterized by the loss of pigment in certain areas of the skin, resulting in white patches. Historically, the fashion industry has been criticized for its narrow portrayal of beauty, often favoring models with flawless, uniform skin tones. However, in a welcome departure from this norm, many fashion brands and designers have begun to cast models with vitiligo, recognizing the unique beauty and strength they bring to the runway. One of the pioneers in promoting vitiligo representation in fashion is the late model Winnie Harlow. Discovered on the hit television show "America's Next Top Model," Harlow has since become a prominent figure in the fashion world, using her platform to raise awareness about vitiligo and advocate for greater inclusivity in the industry. Her success has inspired other models with vitiligo to pursue careers in fashion, breaking down barriers and challenging perceptions along the way. Fashion brands have also played a crucial role in promoting diversity by featuring models with vitiligo in their campaigns and runway shows. From high-end luxury labels to mainstream retailers, brands are increasingly embracing models of all skin types and colors, reflecting the diverse spectrum of beauty in society. Beyond the runway, vitiligo representation in fashion has also extended to advertising and marketing campaigns. Major beauty brands have featured models with vitiligo in their advertisements, sending a powerful message of acceptance and empowerment to consumers around the world. These campaigns not only promote diversity but also help to destigmatize skin conditions like vitiligo, encouraging individuals to embrace their unique characteristics with confidence. In addition to fostering greater representation, the fashion industry has also seen a rise in the creation of clothing lines specifically designed for individuals with vitiligo. These lines often feature garments with innovative designs and color-blocking techniques, helping individuals with vitiligo to feel more comfortable and confident in their clothing choices. Furthermore, the rise of social media has provided a platform for individuals with vitiligo to share their stories and connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. Through platforms like Instagram and YouTube, influencers and advocates with vitiligo have been able to amplify their voices, raising awareness and promoting acceptance in the fashion community and beyond. While progress has undoubtedly been made, there is still much work to be done to ensure that individuals with vitiligo are fully represented and included in the fashion industry. This includes not only increasing visibility on the runway and in advertising but also advocating for greater accessibility and inclusivity in the design and production of clothing. In conclusion, vitiligo's representation in fashion marks a significant step forward in the ongoing journey towards greater diversity and inclusivity. By celebrating the beauty of individuality and challenging traditional beauty standards, the fashion industry has the power to inspire change and foster a more inclusive society for all. • A Good Woman

SOCIETY by Aarti Singh A Good Woman 29 October 2022 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Over the years, generations even, women have been made to feel like in order to be a ‘good’ woman and desirable they need to be selfless, nurturing, sacrificing, always putting others’ needs ahead of their own. This deep seated yet irrational pedestal of being ‘wife-material’. Women are made to believe that they will be deemed perfect only if they think about the good of others first. This is one of the numerous ways how being more self-centred in choices has been the easiest way to villainise women. So today, when a woman decides that she has had enough of bearing people’s expectations and chooses to live life on her own terms, we don’t take over a second to label her as selfish. As a society, we love to villainise women. It’s our favourite timepass. As soon as we see a woman comfortable in her sexuality, concentrating on herself and not seeking constant validation, it irks our soul and pricks our ears. Generation after generation, we are fed with the framework of being the “ideal” woman. And more so than often this includes being able to cook well, looking after one’s family, being independent but not so independent as to threaten their male contemporaries; managing, juggling everything and being good at it. The list really does not end. And for all that matters, we can’t seem to trace where and when it commenced either. Every villainess you see, every single one of them is portrayed as this head strong woman who has problem trusting people, who is independent, highly educated and in a place of power as of to portray that this is what will happen if we give women power. They are always shown to be alone. Or cheated or abandoned. Why is it the prevalent thought that if a woman is successful and unabashed then she must be hard to love? What is it exactly that makes them hard to love? The fact that they aren’t dependent on someone’s validation? Or is it the fact that they are comfortable in their own selves? So quick question- who set this narrative? And had they ever met an actual living, breathing, strong woman in their life? Because it doesn’t seem like it. One would ask out of sheer curiosity that why are we served this narrative. The answer is simple, really. It is done in order to reinforce the popular idea of how successful, educated and modern women are usually selfish and in the wrong to not think about the population of the whole Earth before making decisions that doesn’t have anything to do with- well the population of the whole Earth. With this obscure message of misconceptions that have been so broadly and falsely advertised, we are not only equating women’s independence with arrogance and modernity with shamelessness, but it also projects highly educated women to be ill-mannered and inconsiderate. Truthfully, there is no woman who wore make up one day and ran away from her home the next, or a woman who got a promotion and decided to divorce her husband, or a woman who earned money and turned into a witch. But there are women who are seen as arrogant and ill- mannered just because they did not let anyone else’s idea of femininity describe them. It's sort of humorous as to how lipstick of a slightly darker shade carries the ability to put a woman on a pedestal, how portraying a woman successful and confident goes hand-in-hand with her being non-religious and how merely a haircut or piercing or tattoo holds the power to pronounce a woman pure or impure. And it’s absolutely hilarious how you can be educated, successful, rich, romantically settled, and doing well in every aspect of life yet still you will be forced to fit into a bogus mould of femininity to be considered a “good” woman. Honestly speaking, it is utterly baseless that society has a set of guidelines so as to judge what a conventional “good woman” looks like. You can’t enclose anyone in an invisible cage and expect them to grow at the same time. So it is about time that those guidelines should be either updated or done away with. Why is it the prevalent thought that if a woman is successful and unabashed then she must be hard to love? • Shriya Saran Speaks Fondly Of Her Relationship With Her Loving Daughter, Radha

Shriya Saran Speaks Fondly Of Her Relationship With Her Loving Daughter, Radha by Aparajita Jaiswal Shriya Saran Speaks Fondly Of Her Relationship With Her Loving Daughter, Radha 22 February 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement Shriya Saran, an Indian actress who works predominantly in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi-language films though aspired to become a well-known dancer, she became an actress with her film debut in 2001 with the Telugu film Ishtam, and had her first commercial success with Nuvve Nuvve. Saran subsequently appeared in several more Telugu films alongside Hindi and Tamil films. In addition to her work in films, Saran has been the brand ambassador for brands across India, endorsing beauty and health products. She was also the brand ambassador for Celebrity Cricket League for its first two seasons. Shriya Saran is a versatile actress with a standing in multiple film industries, having done films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, English, Malayalam and Kannada. We are all looking forward to her upcoming projects, Kazaa with Upendra and Sudeep, Music school with Sharman Joshi and a show with Dharma. In a Candid interview with Aparajita Jaiswal she relays how grateful she is to be a part of cinema and having lived in a country that is so beautifully united even though we have such diverse cultures and inhabit disparate worlds of thought. She talks about taking a flight from Delhi to Hyderabad and how that experience changed her life, opening her to a range of cultures and then eventually learning multiple languages including Tamil. “This journey has taught me everything that I am today and it has made me stronger. It has made me understand the power of cinema and how beautiful it is. I’m so grateful that I’m part of cinema. Also, I feel it’s beautiful how language changes the flavour of people. Every language has a different sense of humour and different ways of telling stories but one thing that unites cinema is that one ‘camera’ that we act for and that one ‘action and take’. It’s magic that happens and that’s what makes us alive. I am so grateful I’m part of the cinema.” Shriya Saran speaks about her experience working with Ajay Devgn, one of Bollywood’s gems and a legend. “With Ajay Devgan, I have worked in Drishyam 1, Drishyam 2 and RRR. Thankfully with Krishna’s blessings, they have all been very big hits. It was a pleasure working with someone as trained and as articulate as he is. He lights up the camera, he lights up the screen and he’s a very giving actor. He speaks with his eyes and expresses so beautifully with his eyes. He’s a wonderful actor. He gives a lot to the actor he works with too. It’s just amazing to work with him.” Today’s world and today’s cinema is perceivably about beauty and the visual arts. Shriya talks about going back to her pre-pregnancy shape, being a public figure. “It’s a visual medium and I’m an actor. Visually, everything has to be perfect when I’m on stage and when I’m in front of the camera. So, there is the stress of losing weight and today, we live in an Instagram world where everything has to be perfect. There are filters and what not. I feel like it’s about the pressure that you put on yourself today. Today, I’m very respectful of my body and I love what my body has done for me. I’m very grateful for it, I’m very grateful to Krishna for my body and for my health. I’m moving towards being healthy, doing a lot of yoga, dance and kathak. It’s more about competing with my own self and being a better version of myself than trying to look like somebody else.” Therapy for mental health issues amongst men and women in today's age and climate is a must and a rising issue. Shriya Saran comes forward to speak more about it. “I think that it is very interesting that mental health is being addressed, thanks to a lot of people. Somebody who really came forward and spoke a lot about it is Deepika Padukone and then Alia Bhatt’s own sister spoke about it. I was talking to Ishaan and his wife spoke a lot about it. So, a lot of people who talked about it were more honest about what they were feeling before it was supposed to be not cool to talk about it but now it’s more normalized and I’m very grateful to all the beautiful people who came out and spoke about mental health.” Shriya Saran also talks about women empowerment and how it should be about equality more than anything else. “I think women empowerment for me is all about getting equal rights for women and men and respect. Just giving us equal opportunities and actually stop asking questions like ‘How will you work now that you are with child?’ Or ‘How will you work now that you are married?’. Just creating a space which is very favourable and easy for women to work.” Women empowerment means strengthening women with all the rights of social, economic, and educational needs. It is to create an environment having no gender inequality for women. It is to empower them with equal rights in the family, society, community, and workplace. Everyone loves seeing Shriya and her relationship with Radha on her Instagram. She speaks very fondly of her as she says, “‘The mother’ has changed everything in me. Radha is everything to me. She’s my life, she’s my sunshine. I see her feet on the sand when she runs and when she touches water, her little fingers and she says these little little words: ‘Mama’, ‘Papa’. It’s just beautiful, every day’s a new day. I love her. She’s making me a better person. I love my work more now and I feel like today, I want to make her proud and everyday I’m at work, I’m on the set, I want to make her proud. I want her to watch my films one day and say ‘I love what you’ve done, Mama. I’m very proud of you.’" SEARCH Actor Kangna Sharma gives a sneak peek into the movie of her life COVER STORIES Finding Power In Individuality: In Conversation With The Stunning Alina Rai COVER STORIES Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress COVER STORIES Kavya Thapar And Her Versatile Acting Career That Cuts Across Regional Lines COVER STORIES Ahsaas Channa Talks About Her Mother Being The Inspiration Behind Her Career COVER STORIES POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Shriniwas Kodape Neon Nights And Yellow Lights: The Sonic World Of Natania Lalwani 30 April 2025 COVER STORIES By Sakshi Batra Farhan Khan: Where Poetry Meets Hip-Hop, And Stories Come Alive 10 February 2025 COVER STORIES By Anushka Sharma A Journey Shaped By Courage, Creativity, And Social Media With Aditi Sharma 19 October 2024 COVER STORIES By Anushka Sharma A Journey Of Transformation, Empathy, And Unwavering Passion With Jitin Gulati 11 October 2024 COVER STORIES RELATED POSTS Advertisement
