- How Soha Ali Balances Authenticity With Content Creation
How Soha Ali Balances Authenticity With Content Creation by Akshra Khandelwal How Soha Ali Balances Authenticity With Content Creation 1 September 2023 FASHION Advertisement In the ever-evolving realm of social media, where trends rise and fall like fleeting waves, there emerges a dynamic influencer who navigates this digital landscape with grace and innovation. Soha Ali, a name synonymous with creativity and authenticity, graciously sat down for an exclusive interview, offering a glimpse into her journey, inspirations, and aspirations. "It's going pretty well, by God's grace," Soha beams, setting the tone for our conversation. She reflects on the recent trend that swept through social media, the "Barbie mania," a phenomenon that captured the virtual world's attention for a month. With a chuckle, she admits, "It was good fun while it lasted, but I'm relieved it's getting over now!" Beyond the ephemeral trends, Soha's career is on a steady ascent. Transitioning content creation from a passion to her full-time pursuit has opened doors to refine her art and connect with her audience on a deeper level. Rewinding the clock to 2020, Soha reminisces about the birth of her journey. "It was in 2020 when short-form video content on social media platforms was just taking off, with TikTok taking the lead," she shares. The platform's meteoric rise was marked by its subsequent ban, leading many content creators to pivot to Instagram. For Soha, this shift marked a pivotal moment. "I remember posting my first Reel in late 2020 just out of curiosity, which I like to call a happy accident. It blew up," she recounts, the spark of that accidental success still evident in her eyes. Since that serendipitous start, she's found her purpose in content creation—an avenue that offers community, creativity, and financial stability. Her content palette is as diverse as her influences, ranging from beauty and skincare to entertainment and lifestyle, all underscored by a strong focus on Indian fashion and aesthetics. "My phone is my workstation when it comes to planning my content," Soha reveals. "I note what other creators are doing, current trends, what my audience asks of me through comments and DMs, and other ideas I get while browsing through Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest." This meticulously crafted approach is a testament to her dedication to delivering quality content that resonates. Reflecting on her Evolution, Soha shares, "When I first started making content, it was primarily reactionary, heavily influenced by what others like me were doing and current trends." Yet, growth beckoned, and she embraced a more insightful and informative content style. "Over time, as I learned more about content creation, my present and potential audience, and what I would like to show people vs. what they want or need, it evolved to incorporate more helpful content like skincare, haircare, informed monologues about issues I felt were important, makeup tips, etc." Soha's Evolution extends to her tools and techniques. "It also became more professional since I just used my phone and a ring light when I started, but now I use more and more equipment and hire professionals for significant shoots." The journey from smartphone to studio symbolises her commitment to delivering polished, engaging content that captivates her audience. Amidst her trove of beauty insights, Soha imparts a gem of wisdom: "Apply makeup through your fingers and not a brush whenever possible. It makes it easier to spread, gives a more even finish, and helps you understand the correct amount." Her advice is grounded in practicality and self-care, evident in a creator who knows her craft's nuances. As someone frequently on the go, Soha reveals the essentials that find a place in her bag. "My trusted sunscreen, lipstick, mini perfume, a wooden comb, and some wet wipes," she lists, a minimalist kit that ensures she's well-prepared without compromising her signature style. In the realm of aspirations, Soha's eyes light up with a dream. "My dream collab (and please don't judge me for it!) is to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali," she confesses with an endearing laugh. Her admiration for the filmmaker's visual artistry and character-driven narratives is palpable. "I absolutely love his films and his style of creating vivid visual art," she shares, her voice carrying a tinge of excitement. Such an opportunity would be a fusion of her two loves—content creation and cinematic storytelling. Amidst her achievements, Soha humbly imparts a piece of wisdom for budding creators: "There's nothing more rewarding than a free conscience as a creator and knowing you're doing the best you can without compromising anything or being what you are not." Her advice echoes her journey, marked by authenticity, growth, and a commitment to her craft. As our conversation with Soha Ali draws to a close, it's evident that her path is one defined by resilience, creativity and an unwavering belief in her art. With each post and each interaction, she's crafting a digital legacy that speaks not just to trends but to the essence of self-expression. In a world characterised by rapid change, Soha stands as a beacon of authenticity, reminding us all that during the digital storm, it's the genuine voices that truly resonate. - The Rise Of Nisha Ahuja: Balancing Passion And Profession
The Rise Of Nisha Ahuja: Balancing Passion And Profession By Anushka Sharma The Rise Of Nisha Ahuja: Balancing Passion And Profession 14 August 2024 FASHION Advertisement In the ever-evolving landscape of content creation, Nisha Ahuja is emerging as a standout figure whose journey is as inspiring as it is remarkable. Combining a deep-rooted passion for fashion with a methodical approach to content creation, Nisha's ascent to prominence reflects both dedication and strategic foresight. Nisha’s journey began with a simple but profound love for fashion. "I always had a passion for fashion and creating content," she shares. Her venture into the world of content creation was spontaneous yet purposeful. "One day, I just started making Reels. The whole motive was just about my passion for fashion ," she reflects, highlighting the organic nature of her beginnings. A significant breakthrough came just a month into her content creation journey when she secured a contract with Myntra, a leading fashion e-commerce platform. "Myntra actually signed a contract with me for a year," Nisha recounts. This pivotal moment transformed her from an enthusiastic creator posting casually to a structured influencer with a well-planned content calendar. Despite the glamour of brand collaborations, Nisha remains grounded, attributing her success to her genuine enjoyment of the content creation process. "I really loved and enjoyed the process. That’s why I’m still continuing my 9 to 5 and content creation," she explains. Her ability to juggle a stable job with her creative pursuits is a testament to her dedication and exceptional time management skills. Nisha’s insights into the evolving dynamics of content creation offer valuable lessons for aspiring influencers . She sheds light on the barter deals that often characterize early stages in the industry. "They used to give me a voucher of 10k to shop and create content. It wasn’t money, but for fashion people, clothes were a big deal," she notes. However, as creators build their communities and prove their value, she emphasizes the importance of transitioning to fair compensation. "Once you’ve built a community and can provide brands with value, creators deserve to be paid. Nothing comes for free." Balancing a corporate career with content creation is no small feat, and Nisha's approach is both practical and inspiring. "If you have responsibilities and need stable income, a job is essential. But if you're passionate, you should explore content creation as a career option," she advises. Her ability to excel in both realms underscores her organizational prowess and passion for her work. The content creation industry is rife with opportunities, and Nisha is optimistic about its future. She encourages greater inclusivity, noting, "There are a lot of opportunities for everyone," and urges more men to explore this field. Yet, she also cautions against the pitfalls of relying solely on barter collaborations, advocating for a shift towards paid engagements as creators gain experience. Nisha's success is highlighted by a viral reel that amassed 16 million views, a testament to her relatable and engaging content. "It’s a lovely feeling, but it attracts a lot of attention, not all of it positive. Still, the recognition from brands is invaluable," she reflects, demonstrating her resilience amidst the challenges of fame. In addition to fashion, Nisha delves into lifestyle and food content, showcasing her versatility and creative spirit. Her talent for transforming thrifted pieces into fashionable outfits resonates with her audience, reflecting her ability to push creative boundaries. Inspired by creators like Komal Pandey, Nisha continues to experiment and innovate within the fashion space. To combat creative burnout, Nisha advocates for regular breaks and reconnecting with nature. "Timely breaks are important. I do yoga and listen to Sadhguru’s videos to recharge myself," she shares. Her approach to maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial in the fast-paced world of social media. As Nisha navigates her engagement and family responsibilities, she appreciates the multifaceted role of managing both personal and professional aspects of life. "It's a task, but I really appreciate girls who are managing families and content creation. It's like your own little business, and you're working 24x7," she says, acknowledging the dedication required to balance these roles. Looking forward, Nisha envisions a future filled with opportunities and accolades. "I want to be seen and appreciated for my content. I see myself working with big brands and designers, doing fashion shows, and receiving awards," she concludes, underscoring her entrepreneurial spirit and relentless drive. Nisha Ahuja’s journey exemplifies how passion, hard work, and resilience can lead to extraordinary success. As the content creation industry continues to evolve, her story serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with dedication and a clear vision. - Kaveri Priyam On Making Her Childhood Dream Come True
Kaveri Priyam On Making Her Childhood Dream Come True by Anushka Sharma Kaveri Priyam On Making Her Childhood Dream Come True 13 March 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement In a candid interview, Kaveri Priyam tells us that she had absolutely no idea about how to start working in the industry! All she was clear about was getting herself enrolled in an acting institute and continuing her theatres. Afterwards, she came to know about the auditions happening in Aram nagar and without the knowledge of the do’s and don’ts, she simply started giving them! Slowly, she started learning the various things about the industry and as it was a long process, she had the opportunity of experiencing the ups and downs, the rights and wrongs and helping herself when needed which further helped her to sustain in the industry. Kaveri says that it’s all those initial years which are helping her to support herself till date. She tells us that her experience was very good apart from the times when casting directors asked for money or when they tell you that you are not the appropriate shape or size or colour for this industry. She said that for some time she even took these comments on herself and tried to work in accordance with them but eventually she realised what was good for her and what was not. Kaveri says, “Working in the industry has always been very fun. Touchwood, I have been very lucky because I got the opportunity to work with very lovely people who never made me feel that I was a newcomer in the beginning.” As a child, she always wanted to become an actor. She says she was a born drama queen and was always a part of extracurricular activities. She says she has been lucky to have a good support system; good teachers who were very proactive and her mom, who got her enrolled in various classes. Straight after school, cycling daily to her Kathak classes was extremely hectic but she really enjoyed the part where she used to be on the stage. She used to act, direct, write stories and enact them with friends which unknowingly turned out to be street plays and attract a lot of crowd on the spot. She says that as a child you would think that you are just doing all this for your playtime fun but gradually she realised that she really liked doing all of it by heart. That’s when she decided to become an actor. Despite having a studious family and mindset she realised she didn’t really enjoy it all, and acting was actually what she truly wanted to do. The day she got rejected from one of the exams was her turning point. Thus, she started giving auditions, doing theatres in Delhi and finally she got selected for a show and came to Mumbai. The show didn’t work out well but it brought her to the place where she belonged! Talking about her upcoming projects she tells us, “I am super excited for my upcoming show which is going to air on Sony Sab very soon. The name is ‘Dil diyan Gallan’ and as the name suggests, it’s Punjab based story. So I am looking forward to it, playing a new character, getting into someone else’s shoes. I am super excited for it and also for my new music video which is going to be released soon.” Kaveri speaks about what she loves the most about acting and she said, “I love the way it takes you to different places, makes you meet a lot of different people and the way it helps you grow as a person and an artist. When you work with amazing people from different walks of life, you get to know more about life in general, about different people who exist in the society and with each character you get to be in someone else’s shoes. I believe an actor is someone who can live a thousand lives, which is something really attractive and I literally live to do this. I live to live different characters, different lives, visit new places, locations and meet new people and work with amazing directors and producers. So yes, that is what I feel life is, it should be exciting every day.” We asked her where does she see herself in the next 5 years in this ever-changing entertainment industry and she answered, “I know that this industry is ever-changing and I think nothing is permanent and change is the essence of life so I do not fear change, all I expect from myself is that I adapt to the change, adjust and keep entertaining people. In the coming 5 years I see myself as someone who knows all the tricks and trades of my field and then maybe later I can decide on what sort of work I want to do in the industry. I want to progress, that’s for sure.” Apart from being the character, she thinks, to look like the character is a challenging job. If the character is plumpy, extremely thin or ranky, it is something which takes a toll on your health because there is a limited amount of time in which an actor has to look a certain way and if not followed under proper guidance, it might hamper your health. She says that it’s not particularly tough but extremely challenging, and especially for her as she is a big foodie. But, as of now she hasn’t got the chance to completely transform herself and she does look forward to doing such roles in the future. Kaveri speaks candidly about the pressure in her work and what she does to tackle it, to which she simply said that she, personally, never really had to deal with any such thing. “If you enjoy doing something and can feel that it is meant for you then, that’s it. There is pressure in every other sector and I think that it is a part of work and it should be taken lightly. There is this constant thought that should be there in your mind that you are getting to do what you always wanted to, and so, it is a blessing. There are certain schedules you have to adjust yourself in but that is the fun and challenging part of it which makes it exciting.” About her journey and the obstacles, she tells us that, “Wherever I went to take acting classes, I was always told that I am gifted, which I didn’t understand at that time, but, slowly I got to know that some things are actually there within me but they need to be polished. To convert the talent into skills, the theatres and acting classes helped a lot. Talking about the journey, initially it was tough as you are exploring new things but once you cross that phase, get a break, get appreciated, gain the confidence then things become a little easier. Although competition is there, you have to be determined, focused, keep working on your craft and that is how one succeeds in any field. It has not exactly been a roller coaster ride but, I had my own challenges which I overcame. One of the challenges was that I was overweight for this industry but I decided I wanted to look good on camera and I made that transformation for my first show, from being a very plumpy to a very thin and lean girl. I won't call it an obstacle, but just a part of the job.” For our readers who may not be as familiar with her line of work, she says, “ Be it any industry, there are all sorts of people so, telling someone that this or that industry is not good, is baseless. Meeting, approaching and having the right circle of people around you is very important to achieve anything in life because there has got to be someone who shows you the path and the right direction. Maybe you will find it on your own or someone from your near and dear ones will guide you, but that direction is very important otherwise you might just be all over the place.” Be it any industry, move forward, stay focused, go in the right direction and make sure you meet the right people. In an exclusive interview with our magazine, Diksha shares her journey, her inspirations, and her dreams for the future. "How's everything going?" I asked, to which she replied with contagious excitement, "Everything's going great. We're finally expanding our business and tapping into YouTube, and I couldn't be more thrilled." It was evident that Diksha's passion for makeup was a creative outlet and a potential career path she was enthusiastically embracing. Her journey began around three years ago when she got her hands on the iconic James Charles X Morphe eyeshadow palette. "I knew then that my first post had to use this eyeshadow palette. So I created a warm, colourful look using it. I was so nervous about the judgement, but I went with my gut, and luckily, it was very well received," Diksha shared with a smile. When asked about her makeup inspiration, she credited the likes of Malvika Sitlani, James Charles, and Nikkie Tutorials. "Through Malvika's content, I learnt to keep up with the Indian beauty industry; James Charles taught me how to step out of the box and create uniqueness; Nikkie taught me patience and precision." Her process of creating a new look is a testament to her dedication. "I have been passionate about makeup since college; since then, I kept trying different looks and products with the help of beauty gurus. After a few months, I decided to show my passion towards makeup to people on Instagram. This happened for the sole reason of showcasing my skills," she revealed. - A Brief History on Alexander McQueen
A Brief History on Alexander McQueen by Akash Khatri A Brief History on Alexander McQueen 1 January 2021 FASHION Advertisement If you are fond of premium fashion labels and well aware of the high-level fashion brands then you must be well acquainted with the Alexander McQueen label. The first genuine curiosity for the ones who are not familiar with this name would be who is Alexander McQueen? Alexander McQueen was a famous British fashion designer who brought a revolution in the fashion industry with his rebellious fashion innovations back in the 1980s. He got himself in the fashion industry quite early in his life but soon his flamboyant and out-of-the-box and bold fashion styles brought him under the spotlight. McQueen’s early runway collections developed his reputation for controversy and shock tactics with trousers aptly named “bumsters” and a collection titled “Highland Rape”. These collections had also made people from the Brit fashion industry cringe, but eventually, his talent prevailed, and he became known for his dramatic and extraordinary fashion shows and cat-walks which were sheer head-turners for everyone. He was also one of the first fashion designers who worked with Indian models in London. Some of McQueen’s accomplishments included being one of the youngest designers to achieve the title “British Designer of the Year”, which he won four times between 1996 and 2003 also he was into a partnership deal with the Gucci group and his own label which he founded in the year 1992. By the end of the year 2007, McQueen had his own fashion house established in the cities of London, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, and Las Vegas. Coming to his personal life, he was gay and quite vocal about his sexuality and he never hid anything from the world. But in his later life, he became addicted to drugs and even was depressed. In February 2010 he hanged himself in his home in London and left the entire world in shock and remorse. His psychologists said that he was into depression for three years consecutively and as an escapade, he was into heavy drugs. At the time of Alexander McQueen’s death, he had an eighty percent finished Autumn/Winter collection. 16 pieces of this collection were presented during Paris Fashion Week on 8 March 2010 as a tribute to this great fashion designer. - The Curious Case Of The Body Shop
The Curious Case Of The Body Shop By Anushka Sharma The Curious Case Of The Body Shop 14 March 2024 LIFESTYLE Advertisement If you’re in the mood to grab some goodies from The Body Shop , now would be the right time to do so! The recent announcement of The Body Shop's closure of 75 stores across the UK has sent shockwaves through the retail industry. With 489 jobs on the line, the repercussions are significant, especially in the current economic climate. The decision to close these stores comes as part of an administration process, aimed at stabilizing the business and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Joint administrator Tony Wright emphasized the necessity of swift action to right-size The Body Shop's UK portfolio. While these measures may seem drastic, they are essential for the brand's future viability. Despite the closures, 116 stores will remain open in the UK, signaling a strategic restructuring rather than a complete withdrawal from the market. The administration firm FRP, overseeing the process, has outlined a plan that focuses on optimizing the brand's product offerings, strengthening online sales channels, and refining its wholesale strategy. This shift reflects a broader trend in the retail landscape, where traditional brick-and-mortar stores are adapting to meet evolving consumer preferences. The decision to close stores and cut head office jobs is not unique to The Body Shop. It reflects a broader trend in the retail industry, where companies are reevaluating their business models in response to changing market dynamics. By streamlining operations and focusing on core strengths, brands can position themselves for long-term success in a competitive marketplace. The Body Shop's challenges extend beyond the UK market. Recent reports indicate closures in other regions, including Germany, Belgium, and Ireland. These developments underscore the global nature of the retail industry and the need for brands to navigate complex regulatory environments and consumer preferences in multiple markets. In addition to store closures, The Body Shop is facing legal challenges, as evidenced by the recent ruling in the Netherlands. The court found the brand guilty of copying skincare products from competitor Rituals, ordering compensation for damages. This case highlights the importance of intellectual property rights and the consequences of infringing on competitors' trademarks. Despite these challenges, The Body Shop remains committed to its mission of promoting ethical and sustainable beauty products. The brand's legacy and reputation for social responsibility continue to resonate with consumers worldwide. As it navigates this period of transition, The Body Shop will undoubtedly leverage its strengths to emerge stronger and more resilient in the future. In conclusion, The Body Shop's decision to close stores and cut jobs reflects a strategic effort to streamline operations and ensure long-term viability. While these changes may be challenging, they are necessary for the brand to adapt to evolving market conditions and consumer preferences. By focusing on its core strengths and values, The Body Shop remains poised to thrive in the competitive retail landscape. No matter what, this is a sad situation for the ones who love the brand and its products! - If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht
If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht by Aadhya Venkatesh If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht 21 August 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement As a big believer in dreaming big and working hard to achieve your dreams, Donal Bisht was a Journalist and Anchor who pursued her dream of acting and modelling. In college, her seniors pursuing film studies always called her to work in their short films and music videos. Despite being pushed towards being an actor, Donal believed she wanted to pursue the media industry and work as a journalist. She even established herself in the field with a four-year-long career but eventually realised that "the work did not make my heart happy and did not satisfy me". It was then that she dropped everything and came to Mumbai to pursue her passion for acting. "I really believe in destiny". She has been in the show business for five years and has only been climbing the ladder of success. Having started with TV shows, Donal did four years of back-to-back TV with shows like Ek Deewana Tha and Roop . She then realised that to achieve creative satisfaction, she had to do something different. "I did a South bilingual film in Kannada and Telugu. The shift, I would say creatively, is great when you do different things", she said. She never knew Telugu and didn't have any exposure to the language. But after multiple workshops and extra efforts on sets, she managed to get well versed in the dialogues and expressions. "I used to keep the first AD with me to do the lines thoroughly, in and out". She broke through the language barrier and had her proud moment when people asked her if she was a natural Telugu speaker. Now that her film is in the post-production stage, Donal is excited to see herself in the role. Once her film was on the verge of completion, she entered the Big Boss house and became one of the most respected contestants in her two weeks there. "People come to me and say they want to become like me and love my personality". Having done four back to back soap shows, she now wants to venture into the world of web shows, which she is doing through her MX player original Show, Zakhm. Zakhm is a "romantic thriller show where I play Kavya, a healer who heals people's wounds". She is excited about the release of the show. Donal is also a TEDx speaker and always urges her fans to dream. "Dreaming is very important. If you can dream, you can achieve". She says that once a person has an unrelenting dream that they strive to achieve, persistence will take them forward on their journey. Those who dream can achieve whatever they aspire to. The one mantra she follows in life is to leave no stone unturned. She believes that persistence is critical and that a person should never stop. "First try to fly. If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl, but you do the best". Running and Weight Lifting are her preferred modes of workout. She runs on the treadmill for 20 minutes a day and believes that fitness is what you eat, and one must take care of what suits them and what doesn't. Along with exercise, she also recommends her audiences watch their food intake and monitor what they eat because, more often than not, it is a particular fruit, vegetable, or seafood that causes allergies and bloating. "Observe your body and the way it reacts to food". Donal's favourite travel destination is her family home in Delhi, where she goes for all significant occasions. Other than that, one place she hopes to visit soon is Paris, which is her second favourite place. #donalbisht #coverstory #interview #fashion #actress SEARCH Actor Kangna Sharma gives a sneak peek into the movie of her life COVER STORIES Finding Power In Individuality: In Conversation With The Stunning Alina Rai COVER STORIES Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress COVER STORIES Kavya Thapar And Her Versatile Acting Career That Cuts Across Regional Lines COVER STORIES Ahsaas Channa Talks About Her Mother Being The Inspiration Behind Her Career COVER STORIES POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Shriniwas Kodape Neon Nights And Yellow Lights: The Sonic World Of Natania Lalwani 30 April 2025 COVER STORIES By Sakshi Batra Farhan Khan: Where Poetry Meets Hip-Hop, And Stories Come Alive 10 February 2025 COVER STORIES By Anushka Sharma A Journey Shaped By Courage, Creativity, And Social Media With Aditi Sharma 19 October 2024 COVER STORIES By Anushka Sharma A Journey Of Transformation, Empathy, And Unwavering Passion With Jitin Gulati 11 October 2024 COVER STORIES RELATED POSTS Advertisement
- Bullying
SOCIETY by Akash Khatri Bullying 1 December 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Have you, even in the slightest way, ever bullied or been bullied? I think most of us have, and that’s an unfortunate thing on both the sides. People of all ages are bullied, or bully someone, from a very young age to an old age, too; and at every possible place. May it be at the playground, or schools and colleges or public places, and so on. Not only peers, friends, fellow mates or strangers; sometimes even family members and relatives are responsible for bullying. Even unnoticed things such as some rude comment, or a taunt can hurt someone deeply; and this promotes bullying. Types of bullying: Physical bullying: When bullies try to hurt or torture someone physically, or even touch them without their consent. Verbal bullying: It is when a person taunts or teases the other person. Psychological bullying: When a person or group of people gossip about another person or exclude them from being part of the group, can be termed as psychological bullying. Cyber bullying: When bullies insult, hurt, spread rumours about or harass someone on social media. They make embarrassing and degrading (sometimes very inappropriate) comments, even on public forums, where others can see them; and hurt the person. Bullies also share the person’s personal information, pictures or videos to spoil someone’s public image. Sometimes, we say or do things that we think are just for fun; but it might be affecting the other person. And if they ask you to stop, do not continue doing it. And if you notice someone bullying or being bullied, call it out. Bullies haven’t always been the same. Some things in their life made them do it once or maybe twice; but they resorted to it. Sometimes, the ones who are bullied turn into bullies. Calling out will bring the bullies forward and preventing bullying will not only save people from being bullied, but can also help prevent more people turning into bullies. - Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie
Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie by Aparajita Jaiswal Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie 1 May 2021 FASHION Advertisement Among many of our favourite luxury brand designers, Thomas Carlyle Ford, an American fashion designer and filmmaker, is truly one of the most inspiring and looked upon creators of fashion. He launched his eponymous luxury brand in 2006, having previously served as the creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Ford currently also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Tom Ford had quite the journey, figuring out his interests. At age 16, he enrolled at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, but quickly dropped out. He moved to New York City to study art history at New York University where he met Ian Falconer, who took him to Studio 54 for the first time, spiking his interest in acting and directing. Ford dropped out after a year, focusing on acting in television commercials. Ford began studying interior architecture at The New School’s art and design college, Parsons, in New York City. He kept visiting Studio 54, where he realized he was gay. The club’s disco-era glamor ended up being a major influence on his later designs. Before his last year at New School, Ford spent a year and a half in Paris, where he worked as an intern in Chloé’s press office, inspiring his interest in fashion. He spent his final year at The New School studying fashion, but graduated with a degree in architecture. In an interview with The New York Times, Ford said, “If I was ever going to become a good designer, I had to leave America. My own culture was inhibiting me. Too much style in America is tacky. It’s looked down upon to be too stylish. Europeans, however, appreciate style.” At the time, Italian fashion house Gucci was struggling financially and was seeking to strengthen its women’s ready-to-wear presence as a part of a brand overhaul. The company’s creative director, Dawn Mello hired Ford as the brand’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer in 1990 and Ford moved to Milan. “I was talking to a lot of people, and most didn’t want the job,” Mello said. “For an American designer to move to Italy to join a company that was far from being a brand would have been pretty risky.” Ford’s role at Gucci rapidly expanded; he was designing menswear within six months, and shoes soon after that. He also took over Richard Lambertson left as design director in 1992, heading the brand’s ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising, and store design. In 1993, when he was in charge of designing eleven product lines, Ford worked eighteen-hour days. Although there were creative tensions between Ford and Maurizio Gucci, the company’s chairman and 50% owner, inspiring Maurizio Gucci wanted to fire Ford, Domenico De Sole insisted that he remain. Nonetheless, Ford’s work during the early 1990s was primarily behind the scenes; his contributions to Gucci were overshadowed by those of Mello, who was the company’s public face. In 1994, Ford was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci. By 1999, the house, which had been almost bankrupt when Ford joined, was valued at more than $4 billion. When Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1999, Ford was named Creative Director of that label as well. In April 2004, Ford parted ways with the Gucci group after he and CEO Domenico de Sole, who is credited as Ford’s partner in Gucci’s success, failed to agree with Pinault Printemps Redoute’s boss over control of the Group. He has since referred to this experience as “devastating” and as a “midlife crisis” because he had “put everything into that for fifteen years”. When Ford left in 2004, Gucci Group was valued at $10 billion, hiring four individuals to split the work Ford had done. After leaving Gucci, Ford launched a line of menswear, beauty, eyewear, and accessories in 2006, named after himself, “Tom Ford”. De Sole became chairman of the label. Ford has described “the Tom Ford customer” as international, cultured, well-traveled, and possessing disposable income. For women, he added “strong and intelligent women who know their own style”. From the time we’re born until we die, we’re kept busy with artificial stuff that isn’t important. Tom Ford First Lady Michelle Obama wore an ivory floor-length evening gown designed by Ford to Buckingham Palace in 2011. He has also dressed Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, Julianne Moore, Hugh Jackman, Jon Hamm, and Henry Cavill. Ford designed Daniel Craig’s suits for his last three James Bond films: Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. Jay Z released a song titled “Tom Ford” with “Tom Ford” rapped numerous times within the song. Ford responded that he was flattered and “it means that one has really penetrated and made an impact on popular culture.” Following the song’s release, Ford received a huge spike in online search engine queries. Ford has been called a “fashion icon” and a “style icon” and he was included in “All-TIME 100 Fashion Icons” list. Ford has been included in several best-dressed lists, such as International Best Dressed List,The Guardian’s “The 50 best-dressed over-50s”, and British GQ’s “50 Best Dressed Men in Britain 2015”. He was featured on the cover of the 2011 spring/summer issue of Another Man, giving his opinion on what makes the modern day gentleman. He won several awards including several VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards and Council of Fashion Designers of America. Ford is known for sexy clothes, making provocative statements, and creating racy advertisements. Ford’s designs convey a “sophisticated sex appeal” and he has been credited for “bringing sexy back”. His advertisement campaigns have drawn controversy for use of nudity and “provocative sexual imagery”. Ford is also known to pose with celebrities and models in his ad campaigns. Ford is not only a designer but also a creative artist. Ford directed the Academy Award-nominated films A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals. In March 2005, Ford announced the launch of his film production company, Fade to Black. In 2009 he made his directorial debut with A Single Man, based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. The drama stars Colin Firth as an LA-based, gay college professor, alongside Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult and Matthew Goode. The novel was adapted by David Scearce and Ford; Ford was also one of the producers. In 2015, Ford became attached to direct Nocturnal Animals, an adaptation of the Austin Wright novel Tony and Susan. The film was released in 2016. Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams played the lead roles of Tony and Susan. Michael Shannon, Armie Hammer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Isla Fisher co-starred in the film. The film received praise from critics, as well as winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
