Legendary Female Icons Who Made Fashion Statements In The 20th Century by Prarthana Rohatgi Legendary Female Icons Who Made Fashion Statements In The 20th Century 18 February 2023 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement "Fashion is an art and you are the canvas" ~ Savio Fonseca Fashion is the art of styling oneself, and a form of self-expression. Fashion is often used by people to build up their unique identity in the outside world, an exclusive part of them that represents who they're as a person and their creative identity. Women have always played a significant role in evolving distinctive fashion styles and often became major trendsetters. Like any other part of the world India also carries its unique fashion statements and many Lady Icons who were acknowledged for their exceptional styles and fits, not only by their mother nation but also by many other global magazines. Here are listed 4 women who became prominent characters of the fashion industry and influenced it massively and limitlessly even in the 20th century, the era when there were many limits to the rights of women. 1. Maharani Indira Devi of Cooch, Behar (1892-1968) Born on 19 February 1892 and initially known as Princess Indira Raje, Maharani Indira Devi was the only daughter of Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baroda and his second wife Maharani Chimnabai. She grew up at the opulent Lakshmi Vilas Palace in Baroda and was one of the first Indian princesses to be given a western education after the abolishment of the purdah system. She fell in love with Prince Jitendra Narayan of Cooch Behar, a junior Princely State, and scandalously got married to him. The couple later became the Maharaja and Maharani of Cooch, Behar. Indira Devi was the mother of 5 children and became a widow almost a decade after her marriage and ended up becoming the Regent of Cooch, Behar due to the minority of her eldest son, prince Jagaddipendra Narayan. Growing up in the palatial halls of Laxmi Vilas Palace in Baroda, Maharani Indira Devi was an avid enthusiast of chiffon sarees embellished with delicate zardozi, gota, pearl, and gold embroidery. She made the trend of wearing silk chiffon saris, a royal statement. Which till today is followed in full glory. Maharani Indira Devi’s unparalleled elegance and unique fashion flair are a source of inspiration for numerous fashion brands, even today. She was known very well known for her keen eyes for fashion, beauty, and glamour all over the globe. She even became a leading figure in Anglo-Indian society. Salvatore Ferragamo is known to be her favorite designer. 2. Rani Sita Devi Of Kapurthala (1915-2002) Known as Princess Karam and the Pearl of India, Rani Sita Devi was the daughter of Raja Uday Raj Singh of Kashipur, Uttarakhand, and wife of Karamjit Singh, a younger son of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of the princely state of Kapurthala in Punjab, British India. She was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal In 1944, for her work in raising funds for Indian soldiers in the Second World War. She was widely regarded as one of the most beautiful princesses of her country, and a glamorous woman of her day. When she was just 19 years of age, Vogue magazine called her a “secular goddess” and at the age of 22, Look magazine named her one of the five best ladies on the planet. She soon became the inspiration and muse of many top photographers and fashion designers of the world. Sita Devi's preferred couture was Mainbocher who was more famously known for designing the wedding dress of Wallis Simpson when she married the Duke of Windsor. Mainbocher was commissioned by the Queen to design chiffon saris and fur coats. In early 1939, at Lady Mendl's tea in honor of the Hollywood dietitian, Gayelord Hauser, Sita Devi was listed among the twelve most glamorous women in the world. Elsa Schiaparelli created her 1935 collection of evening gowns based on Maharani’s saris. She still firmly is known as a legendary fashion icon in India and she'll always be. 3. Maharani Gayatri Devi (1919-2009) Born in 1919 to Indira Devi of Cooch, Behar, and Maharaja Jitendra Narayana, Gayatri Devi was a global icon celebrated for her fashion statements and beauty. She became a successful politician in the Swatantra Party, after India's independence and the abolition of the princely states. Gayatri Devi was a particularly avid equestrienne. She was an excellent rider and an able Polo player. She was a good shooter and enjoyed many days out on 'Shikars'. Gayatri was fond of cars and is credited with importing the first Mercedes-Benz W126, a 500 SEL to India which was later shipped to Malaysia. She also owned several Rolls-Royces and an aircraft. Being the daughter of Indira Devi of Cooch, she inherited her mother's grace, style, and avid enthusiasm for chiffon. Her jewelry was heavily influenced by western contemporary designs and a string of pearls was her favorite which eventually became her trademark. She made her way into Vogue Magazine's "Top 10 most beautiful women in the world" collection as well. Besides being greatly prosperous, she was also a source of inspiration to many fashionistas across the country and also globally. 4. Madhubala (1933-1969) Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi or known by the name Madhubala was an Indian actress and producer who worked in Hindi- Cinema. She's said to appear in over 60 films in her active career of a decade. Editor Baburao Patel called her the "queen of charity" as s he performed actively in charity. Madhubala has been said to be a philanthropist and she kept her charity work guarded and donated anonymously. She was a timeless Indian beauty who not only ruled Hindi cinema but also the hearts of people. In Bollywood, Madhubala was known for her appealing sense of fashion, beauty, and charm. She was also titled 'Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood'. The credit for the Anarkali suit becoming a trend and fashion statement goes to Madhubala, which she flaunted gracefully in the song 'jab pyaar kiya to darna kya' from the movie Mughl-e-azam. She also brought in many fashion trends such as off-shoulder, midi dresses, and plain chiffon sarees as well. - Puma Speedcat Ignites Again With Rosé At The Wheel
Puma Speedcat Ignites Again With Rosé At The Wheel By Ananya Patankar Puma Speedcat Ignites Again With Rosé At The Wheel 25 July 2025 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement K-pop icon Rosé leads the charge in PUMA’s latest Speedcat release—a dynamic fusion of retro racing spirit and modern street energy. Rosé lends her cool intensity to the PUMA Speedcat’s latest evolution—where a pale blue palette and racing roots collide in a silhouette made for modern icons. There are shoes that walk, and then there are shoes that wait to launch. Enter the PUMA Speedcat, a cult silhouette forged from motorsport DNA and resurrected once more, this time with the quiet power of K-pop star Rosé . In its latest iteration, the Speedcat doesn’t just make a comeback, it revs to life in a fresh pale blue colorway, punctuated with a flash of fierce orange, and a whole lot of attitude. Launched July 24, 2025, this drop marks yet another thrilling chapter in the Speedcat’s legacy, a shoe that first drew breath on the race circuit and now tears through streetwear culture with unapologetic ease. It’s lean, low-profile, and engineered for edge. Think: retro pit-lane cool meets future-forward styling. Rosé, a longtime PUMA muse and master of understated glam, once again takes the wheel in the brand’s visuals. But these aren't high-speed action shots. They’re slow-burning, simmering scenes. There’s a growling muscle car, a flicker of flame-red reflections, and Rosé sitting still, yet somehow brimming with momentum. It’s a cinematic expression of what the Speedcat stands for: power in repose, elegance poised to explode. The color story furthers the duality. That soft blue upper reads almost serene, until the orange Formstrip slices through like a bolt of speed. It's a nod to the shoe’s motorsport heritage, but it also feels distinctly contemporary. The kind of color combo that glides from tarmac to terrazzo café floor without missing a beat. What makes this drop desirable isn’t just its aesthetic, it’s the aura it exudes. The Speedcat isn’t trying to be trendy; it is timeless. And yet, with Rosé lending her quiet fire to the campaign, it becomes something more. A wearable contradiction: cool yet charged, graceful yet grounded, a shoe that speaks even in stillness. Available now on PUMA.com , flagship stores, and selected retailers, this release is less about speed and more about style that simmers. Whether you’re a motorsport devotee, a Rosé fan, or someone with an eye for silhouette and statement, the Speedcat is your signal flare. Because the real power moves? Is knowing when to stay still—and when to ignite. By Rinni Pathak TRAVEL The Take Off Of A Flight Connecting Emirates And NBA By Rinni Pathak 16 February 2024 Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement On the very date of 8 February 2024, the famous airline Emirates was announced as the official Global Airline Partner of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The day saw an announcement of a multiyear worldwide marketing collaboration between the two associations. All thanks to this partnership, Emirates will be becoming NBA’s first-ever referee jersey patch partner and title partner of the NBA Cup which had the former name of NBA In-Season Tournament. Being the inaugural title partner of the Emirates NBA Cup, the international airline will be represented by a co-branded Emirates NBA Cup event logo, with co-branded advertising on the NBA’s international social media networks, and in-arena signage during the Emirates NBA Cup Semifinal and Championship games beginning the following season. All NBA referee uniforms will also have the Emirates logo, as of Sunday, February 18, at 8:00p.m. ET on TNT, when the 2024 NBA All-Star Game takes place. The chairman and CEO of Emirates Group, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates Group Chairman and Chief Executive stated, “We are proud to establish a global marketing partnership with the National Basketball Association to become its Official Global Airline Partner”. He added, “This collaboration will also see Emirates become the league’s first referee jersey patch partner and the inaugural title partner of the NBA Cup. With basketball’s popularity around the world, we are excited to work with one of the most globally recognized and prestigious professional leagues. The NBA is a valuable addition to our sponsorship portfolio as it allows us to connect with a vast global fanbase, including in the U.S., where the game is an integral part of our country’s sport culture.” In addition to that, NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum also stated, “Emirates is a world-class airline that shares our commitment to engaging fans around the world in new and creative ways.” He also said, “As basketball continues to be recognized as the fastest growing sport globally, this collaboration will showcase the excitement of the NBA to the millions of people who fly Emirates every year.” Emirates will also have the opportunity to participate in other major league events owing to the sponsorship. Emirates’ international partnership portfolio consists of collaborations with top sporting clubs, tournaments, high profile cultural affairs, and others. - Suhani Shah Celebrating 25 years in Mentalism
Suhani Shah Celebrating 25 years in Mentalism by Naisargi Devdher Suhani Shah Celebrating 25 years in Mentalism 2 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Even before understanding what fame and glamour is, a child understood what magic is! It was 26 years ago, that a 6 year old Suhani saw a ‘magic show’ and dreamt of becoming a magician. This marks her 25th year performing mentalism, as she still carries the charm and innocence that 7 year old Suhani did. Talking of it, there is a lot of glamour, a factor of ‘wow’, self-love and over confidence associated with the career transition. To which, she elaborately explains, “As a child, I kept talking of magic and fortunately, my parents honestly were extremely considerate about it. You know, my father spent 6 months looking for a tutor and basically putting across magic as my educational development, because somewhere my inclination towards magic was visible. And that was the age when I didn’t even understand what glamour or for a fact even fame is! So when my first show was grandly put about, the then Chief Minister attended it. That was exactly how my career began. So for me on a personal level, fame has been a part of my career, so has glamour, it existed then, it persists now, so never does overconfidence seem to be very much an issue to say.” Putting it simply, she brought about the point of growing up with talent. Queerly, to think of, does a child always begin with imagining that she would be a part of a mega industry rather than just performing for herself? That anticipation of where she’s being lead to marks a crazy confusion in the life of an artist. “To be completely honest, yes, I did think that the talent is leading me to some place grand. I could foresee my career with magic, art and what not around. However, I truly did never expect this transition, you know! I did never know I would be assimilated with a streaming, or filming culture. That for me has not just given me a new hypo graph to live up to but also, something I truly wanted to do. Having youthful energy, I wrote books over mentalism and magic, I had art shows to perform but none of it made me as satisfied as being a part of this industry makes me. That is the exact meaning for transition and unknowingly yet beautiful, I get pushed and mingled in the industry.” When the transition of career happens to be natural, there are a lot of changes one needs to adapt to. There was a demand for the talent I held, but it was never a career that I would want to perform. Thus till the pandemic hit, I really didn’t think of it. However, when the pandemic hit, the work stopped, I was barred from home and that was exactly when I began with YouTube streaming and making videos. So the transition was never sudden, it just happened slowly. I had to adapt, accept and identify that I was away from the stage, I had screens to connect with people to, and performing live had a very different sense. That adaption was actually challenging because it brought me to a stage where I had to recognise my career scope and recognize what exactly was to be done. You know, I didn’t go to school, I didn’t go to college, I was just working all the while, and now I was here where I had to sit and just do nothing. That was more challenging for me. So I remember, starting off with an online show, ‘Magic being performed online’, that somewhat pulled me through the pandemic dilemma. While streaming on YouTube was the exact game changer I was looking for because looking back, I was having fun doing it. Little did I know that it was the beginning of a novel spectrum of my career!” All this while, Suhani mentioned the Pandemic to be a revolution in all senses However, through all of this happening, there is a high doubt of where art forms are leading to when it comes to India, because there's a lot to do with glamour here as well. “A bit contrary to what you said, India is filled with art forms with diverse roots. It’s not even similar, there is a difference in totality. And truly, in my understanding, we are always attracted to glamour. You see a beautiful rose, its glamour, desire of living in a house I glamour, and that will always be appreciated but here it’s more about how you understand art to be. Because art is also glamorous, art also is beautiful and that goes hand in hand. The window to the world during the pandemic was their phones. People were seeing direction, cinematography and all of it came from art. And whatever the screens passed on to people was art. People eventually started valuing art, realising that when nothing works, and its art that they can rely on.” Mentioning the importance of art and growing up with it, there is a lot of superstitious association with magic. Dealing with which stands out from any coaching. “Since childhood, I was looked at as a ‘DEVI’, saying I can heal everything possible. Earlier, people confused me with a musician and there I had to sort out the exact meaning of a magician, after which, a lot of people came to me asking me to heal their illnesses or asking me solve their problems. This was exactly what shifted me away from any sort of superstitious association since childhood. I give ted talks speaking against superstitions. Hence I always say, ‘I CANNOT READ MINDS, I CAN CREATE AN ILLUSION OF READING MIND’.” Just adding illusions cannot definitely define it as magic. However, according to Suhani, Guzaarish is a movie that utilises pieces of magical elements. That’s exactly where she leaves you with… Wonder how to deal with magic, because every potential of yours is magic if you know how to use it!! - These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health
These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health By Anushka Sharma These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health 1 April 2024 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Fashion is like a thrilling roller coaster ride, isn't it? It's full of twists, turns, and unexpected surprises. However, did you know that some of those surprises lurking in your closet might not be so fun after all? Buckle up, because we're about to uncover the hidden dangers of fast fashion and trendy accessories. Fast fashion is like the speedy Gonzales of the clothing world. It churns out cheap clothes faster than you can say "fashion emergency." But here's the catch: those super affordable threads often come with a not-so-pleasant side effect. They're loaded with chemicals that can irritate your skin and even cause health issues. Think of it like wearing a toxic soup – definitely not a good look! Now, let's talk about everyone's favorite footwear: sneakers. They're comfy, stylish, and practically a fashion staple these days. But did you know that wearing sneakers too much can mess with your feet? Yep, it's true! They can throw off your posture and even lead to painful foot problems. So, while you're busy rocking those kicks, your poor feet might be silently screaming for a break. And then there are waist trainers – those trendy contraptions designed to give you that coveted hourglass figure. Sounds great, right? Well, not exactly. Sure, they might help you cinch your waist, but they can also wreak havoc on your body. From messing with your appetite to causing serious breathing issues, waist trainers are like the fashion equivalent of a tight squeeze. But let's not forget about the accessories, because they come with their own set of dangers too. Heavy earrings might look glam, but they can actually stretch out your earlobes or even cause them to split. Ouch! And those ill-fitting thongs? They can rub you the wrong way and leave you feeling seriously uncomfortable. So, what's a fashion-forward individual to do in a world full of wardrobe woes? Well, for starters, it's important to be mindful of what you're putting on your body. Opt for clothes made from natural materials whenever possible, and steer clear of anything that feels scratchy or uncomfortable. When it comes to footwear, choose shoes that offer both style and support. And don't forget to give your feet a break every now and then – they deserve it! As for accessories, go easy on the heavy earrings and make sure your thongs fit just right. And most importantly, listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it. Fashion should be fun and fabulous, not hazardous to your health. So, the next time you're getting dressed, remember to put safety first. After all, there's nothing more stylish than taking care of yourself! - A Quiet Affair With Bangkok At Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok
By Shriniwas Kodape TRAVEL A Quiet Affair With Bangkok At Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok By Shriniwas Kodape 14 August 2025 Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The sky had just started melting into a bruised purple when I rolled into Sukhumvit. The kind of Bangkok evening that clings to your skin, rich with exhaust fumes, grilled chicken, and possibilities. The Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok didn’t tower so much as it stood with purpose—its glass façade reflecting a thousand fractured city lights. It didn’t need to scream; it whispered welcome in the way old cities do. Inside, the lobby pulsed with soft light and a hush that felt like velvet. No fuss, no spectacle—just the hum of polished floors, muted jazz, and smiles that reached the eyes. The check-in was less transaction, more choreography. I barely noticed the paperwork. I remember the cold towel, the floral scent of the welcome drink, and the quiet assurance that I’d landed somewhere that understood the balance between stillness and movement. Upstairs, the room opened like a scene change. Floor-to-ceiling windows stretched across Bangkok’s tangled sprawl, and I stood barefoot on the carpet, watching the BTS Skytrain snake through the city like a slow metal thought. The bed was impossibly inviting. The kind you fall into without meaning to. And the bathroom—marble, glass, silence—became a sanctuary all its own. I stayed under the rain shower until time loosened its grip on my shoulders. Morning came soft and forgiving. I wandered down to breakfast, where cuisines danced around each other without borders. I saw miso soup flirting with hash browns, samosas holding court beside bacon. A chef behind the egg station looked up and nodded before I spoke, like he’d already read the kind of morning I was having. The coffee was dark, generous, and unhurried. It asked nothing of me except presence. Later, I found myself floating in the rooftop pool, the city buzzing below, oblivious. Sunlight scattered across the water, and for a moment, everything stilled—the taxis, the horns, the deadlines. The world could wait. By sundown, I made my way to Brewski , the open-air bar perched high above the Bangkok beat. There’s something about sipping craft beer at eye level with the skyline that rewires your perception. The amber lights, the long wooden bar, the crisp laughter of travelers who had already surrendered to the city’s rhythm. I ordered a local IPA that carried notes of citrus, coriander, and Bangkok heat. It slipped down easy, like the night. Hunger led me down to Attico , a Tuscan hideaway draped in warm light and rustic woods. The wine breathed in its glass. The truffle risotto arrived steaming, fragrant, unapologetically rich. A playlist of Italian jazz hummed in the background. The room wasn’t crowded, but it was alive—families talking with their hands, lovers leaning in, chefs plating dishes with quiet intensity. And then there was Chao Phya, where Thai cuisine was treated with reverence, not spectacle. Each dish told its own story. The tom yum had depth, not just heat. The jasmine rice was perfectly steamed, catching the flavors like silk. There was no rush, no showmanship. Just flavor, history, and the kind of cooking that came from memory more than manuals. Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok didn’t try to impress. It simply was. A hotel that knew how to fade into the background so you could foreground your own experience. It gave space without distance, luxury without noise. It was the pause between exhale and inhale, the quiet beat between footsteps. On my last morning, I lingered by the window. The city was already wide awake, but I moved slower now. Something about this place had rewired the way I listened, the way I looked. I was packed with the strange heaviness of knowing something subtle had shifted. And as the elevator descended, I didn’t feel like I was leaving a hotel—I felt like I was stepping out of a story I’d quietly become part of. - Mananveer Singh On Making Music That Feels Natural And Real
Mananveer Singh On Making Music That Feels Natural And Real By Sakshi Shah Mananveer Singh On Making Music That Feels Natural And Real 24 March 2026 COVER STORIES Advertisement In an industry where authenticity often competes with trends, Mananveer Singh carves his own space with quiet confidence and intention. His music does not follow formulas; it reflects lived experiences, emotions, and a deeply personal understanding of sound that has evolved over time. Growing up, his life unfolded differently from most. Sent to boarding school at the age of 12, he learned early on how to navigate the world independently. Without the comfort of constant guidance, he developed resilience through experience, absorbing lessons from diverse environments and perspectives. These formative years shaped not just his personality, but also the emotional depth that defines his music today. His introduction to music as a serious pursuit came unexpectedly. During a school co-curricular activity, a fellow student overheard him singing and encouraged him to perform in front of everyone. Standing before hundreds of students, what could have been an intimidating moment turned into a defining one. The applause he received left a lasting impact, giving him a sense of clarity he had never felt before. It was then that he recognised music as more than a talent; it was something he wanted to dedicate his life to. Committed to honing his craft, he pursued formal training in both Hindustani and Western classical music. This foundation not only strengthened his technical abilities but also gave him the freedom to experiment across styles. With a clear vision, he moved to Mumbai, navigating the industry without prior connections. The journey came with its share of challenges, but each experience led him closer to finding the right people and creative space that now supports his growth. What sets Mananveer apart is his ability to blend Punjabi influences with contemporary global sounds in a way that feels natural and unforced. His music is rooted in authenticity, often drawing from real-life emotions rather than constructed narratives. For him, the melody is always the starting point, shaping the mood and emotional direction of a song. The lyrics follow organically, becoming an extension of what the music already expresses. His influences reflect both range and depth, from the intricate compositions of A. R. Rahman to the effortless vocal expression of Sonu Nigam, alongside the cultural resonance of Diljit Dosanjh and the timeless power of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. These inspirations have helped shape a sound that feels both rooted and contemporary. Tracks like Desire showcase his artistic sensibility, bringing together Punjabi authenticity with global sonic elements. The song stands as a reflection of his instinctive approach to music creation, where experimentation meets emotional honesty. Away from music, he brings the same sense of passion to his personal interests. A dedicated sports enthusiast, he enjoys football, cricket, badminton, and swimming. Travel also plays an important role in his life, particularly solo journeys that offer him new perspectives and moments of introspection. These experiences often find their way back into his music, adding layers to his storytelling. The rise of digital platforms has further expanded his reach, allowing his work to connect with audiences across geographies. While social media has opened doors, his focus remains firmly on creating music with meaning rather than chasing fleeting visibility. One of the most memorable moments of his journey so far came during his first performance of 2026 in his hometown. What began as a scattered gathering soon transformed into a crowd of thousands, drawn in by the energy of his performance. The connection he felt with the audience that day, along with the recognition he received, became a milestone he continues to carry with him. For those discovering his music, songs like Desire , Drip , Vajde Salute , No Regrets , and Yaar Tera Ni offer a strong introduction to his world. Each track captures a different aspect of his identity, both as an artist and as an individual. Looking ahead, Mananveer Singh is entering an exciting phase of his career - with new collaborations, an upcoming EP, and a series of Punjabi fusion projects influenced by global sounds. As he continues to evolve, his commitment to authenticity remains unchanged. In a landscape that often rewards repetition, Mananveer chooses originality. His journey is not just about making music, but about creating something that feels honest, personal, and lasting.
