Fashion is often used by people to build up their unique identity in the outside world, an exclusive part of them that represents who they're as a person and their creative identity. Women have always played a significant role in evolving distinctive fashion styles and often became major trendsetters. Like any other part of the world India also carries its unique fashion statements and many Lady Icons who were acknowledged for their exceptional styles and fits, not only by their mother nation but also by many other global magazines. Here are listed 4 women who became prominent characters of the fashion industry and influenced it massively and limitlessly even in the 20th century, the era when there were many limits to the rights of women. 1. Maharani Indira Devi of Cooch, Behar (1892-1968) Born on 19 February 1892 and initially known as Princess Indira Raje, Maharani Indira Devi was the only daughter of Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baroda and his second wife Maharani Chimnabai. She grew up at the opulent Lakshmi Vilas Palace in Baroda and was one of the first Indian princesses to be given a western education after the abolishment of the purdah system. She fell in love with Prince Jitendra Narayan of Cooch Behar, a junior Princely State, and scandalously got married to him. The couple later became the Maharaja and Maharani of Cooch, Behar. Indira Devi was the mother of 5 children and became a widow almost a decade after her marriage and ended up becoming the Regent of Cooch, Behar due to the minority of her eldest son, prince Jagaddipendra Narayan. Growing up in the palatial halls of Laxmi Vilas Palace in Baroda, Maharani Indira Devi was an avid enthusiast of chiffon sarees embellished with delicate zardozi, gota, pearl, and gold embroidery. She made the trend of wearing silk chiffon saris, a royal statement. Which till today is followed in full glory. Maharani Indira Devi’s unparalleled elegance and unique fashion flair are a source of inspiration for numerous fashion brands, even today. She was known very well known for her keen eyes for fashion, beauty, and glamour all over the globe. She even became a leading figure in Anglo-Indian society. Salvatore Ferragamo is known to be her favorite designer. 2. Rani Sita Devi Of Kapurthala (1915-2002) Known as Princess Karam and the Pearl of India, Rani Sita Devi was the daughter of Raja Uday Raj Singh of Kashipur, Uttarakhand, and wife of Karamjit Singh, a younger son of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of the princely state of Kapurthala in Punjab, British India. She was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal In 1944, for her work in raising funds for Indian soldiers in the Second World War. She was widely regarded as one of the most beautiful princesses of her country, and a glamorous woman of her day. When she was just 19 years of age, Vogue magazine called her a “secular goddess” and at the age of 22, Look magazine named her one of the five best ladies on the planet. She soon became the inspiration and muse of many top photographers and fashion designers of the world. Sita Devi's preferred couture was Mainbocher who was more famously known for designing the wedding dress of Wallis Simpson when she married the Duke of Windsor. Mainbocher was commissioned by the Queen to design chiffon saris and fur coats. In early 1939, at Lady Mendl's tea in honor of the Hollywood dietitian, Gayelord Hauser, Sita Devi was listed among the twelve most glamorous women in the world. Elsa Schiaparelli created her 1935 collection of evening gowns based on Maharani’s saris. She still firmly is known as a legendary fashion icon in India and she'll always be. 3. Maharani Gayatri Devi (1919-2009) Born in 1919 to Indira Devi of Cooch, Behar, and Maharaja Jitendra Narayana, Gayatri Devi was a global icon celebrated for her fashion statements and beauty. She became a successful politician in the Swatantra Party, after India's independence and the abolition of the princely states. Gayatri Devi was a particularly avid equestrienne. She was an excellent rider and an able Polo player. She was a good shooter and enjoyed many days out on 'Shikars'. Gayatri was fond of cars and is credited with importing the first Mercedes-Benz W126, a 500 SEL to India which was later shipped to Malaysia. She also owned several Rolls-Royces and an aircraft. Being the daughter of Indira Devi of Cooch, she inherited her mother's grace, style, and avid enthusiasm for chiffon. Her jewelry was heavily influenced by western contemporary designs and a string of pearls was her favorite which eventually became her trademark. She made her way into Vogue Magazine's "Top 10 most beautiful women in the world" collection as well. Besides being greatly prosperous, she was also a source of inspiration to many fashionistas across the country and also globally. 4. Madhubala (1933-1969) Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi or known by the name Madhubala was an Indian actress and producer who worked in Hindi- Cinema. She's said to appear in over 60 films in her active career of a decade. Editor Baburao Patel called her the "queen of charity" as s he performed actively in charity. Madhubala has been said to be a philanthropist and she kept her charity work guarded and donated anonymously. She was a timeless Indian beauty who not only ruled Hindi cinema but also the hearts of people. In Bollywood, Madhubala was known for her appealing sense of fashion, beauty, and charm. She was also titled 'Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood'. The credit for the Anarkali suit becoming a trend and fashion statement goes to Madhubala, which she flaunted gracefully in the song 'jab pyaar kiya to darna kya' from the movie Mughl-e-azam. She also brought in many fashion trends such as off-shoulder, midi dresses, and plain chiffon sarees as well.     If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht by Aadhya Venkatesh If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht 21 August 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement As a big believer in dreaming big and working hard to achieve your dreams, Donal Bisht was a Journalist and Anchor who pursued her dream of acting and modelling. In college, her seniors pursuing film studies always called her to work in their short films and music videos. Despite being pushed towards being an actor, Donal believed she wanted to pursue the media industry and work as a journalist. She even established herself in the field with a four-year-long career but eventually realised that "the work did not make my heart happy and did not satisfy me". It was then that she dropped everything and came to Mumbai to pursue her passion for acting. "I really believe in destiny". She has been in the show business for five years and has only been climbing the ladder of success. Having started with TV shows, Donal did four years of back-to-back TV with shows like Ek Deewana Tha and Roop . She then realised that to achieve creative satisfaction, she had to do something different. "I did a South bilingual film in Kannada and Telugu. The shift, I would say creatively, is great when you do different things", she said. She never knew Telugu and didn't have any exposure to the language. But after multiple workshops and extra efforts on sets, she managed to get well versed in the dialogues and expressions. "I used to keep the first AD with me to do the lines thoroughly, in and out". She broke through the language barrier and had her proud moment when people asked her if she was a natural Telugu speaker. Now that her film is in the post-production stage, Donal is excited to see herself in the role. Once her film was on the verge of completion, she entered the Big Boss house and became one of the most respected contestants in her two weeks there. "People come to me and say they want to become like me and love my personality". Having done four back to back soap shows, she now wants to venture into the world of web shows, which she is doing through her MX player original Show, Zakhm. Zakhm is a "romantic thriller show where I play Kavya, a healer who heals people's wounds". She is excited about the release of the show. Donal is also a TEDx speaker and always urges her fans to dream. "Dreaming is very important. If you can dream, you can achieve". She says that once a person has an unrelenting dream that they strive to achieve, persistence will take them forward on their journey. Those who dream can achieve whatever they aspire to. The one mantra she follows in life is to leave no stone unturned. She believes that persistence is critical and that a person should never stop. "First try to fly. If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl, but you do the best". Running and Weight Lifting are her preferred modes of workout. She runs on the treadmill for 20 minutes a day and believes that fitness is what you eat, and one must take care of what suits them and what doesn't. Along with exercise, she also recommends her audiences watch their food intake and monitor what they eat because, more often than not, it is a particular fruit, vegetable, or seafood that causes allergies and bloating. "Observe your body and the way it reacts to food". Donal's favourite travel destination is her family home in Delhi, where she goes for all significant occasions. I think most of us have, and that’s an unfortunate thing on both the sides. People of all ages are bullied, or bully someone, from a very young age to an old age, too; and at every possible place. May it be at the playground, or schools and colleges or public places, and so on. Not only peers, friends, fellow mates or strangers; sometimes even family members and relatives are responsible for bullying. Even unnoticed things such as some rude comment, or a taunt can hurt someone deeply; and this promotes bullying. Types of bullying: Physical bullying: When bullies try to hurt or torture someone physically, or even touch them without their consent. Verbal bullying: It is when a person taunts or teases the other person. Psychological bullying: When a person or group of people gossip about another person or exclude them from being part of the group, can be termed as psychological bullying. Cyber bullying: When bullies insult, hurt, spread rumours about or harass someone on social media. They make embarrassing and degrading (sometimes very inappropriate) comments, even on public forums, where others can see them; and hurt the person. Bullies also share the person’s personal information, pictures or videos to spoil someone’s public image. Sometimes, we say or do things that we think are just for fun; but it might be affecting the other person. And if they ask you to stop, do not continue doing it. And if you notice someone bullying or being bullied, call it out. Bullies haven’t always been the same. Some things in their life made them do it once or maybe twice; but they resorted to it. Sometimes, the ones who are bullied turn into bullies. Calling out will bring the bullies forward and preventing bullying will not only save people from being bullied, but can also help prevent more people turning into bullies. Finland: Finland makes for a beautiful destination to visit in winter. Its beauty is what makes it incredible. There are a number of places that can be visited during the winter season. Rovaniemi and Lake Saimaa are such places, that look incredible during the winter. Rovaniemi has beautiful rivers and nature, which makes it a good spot for canoeing, swimming, and fishing. It is a home for skiers and snow lovers in the winter season. Finland is also considered to be the best place for children. Rovaniemi is said to be the home of Santa Clause, during winter. Lake Saimaa is a dominant lake to visit in Finland. It is known as the lake of thousand islands, due to its enormous width and area of about 1350 sq km. Netherlands: The Netherlands is a rather underrated place to visit in winter. Especially, the festivals over there are a must to consider while travelling. One such festival is the Dickens Festival, which is celebrated in the loving memory of the writer Charles Dickens. On this festival, there is a re-creation of 19th-century life, on the streets of Deventer. Many people assemble there, dressed as characters from his books, to show their appreciation for his work. Furthermore, the beautiful Christmas market and Valkenburg are a must-visit during the Christmas season. This place is full of love and excitement, and tourists often visit miniature villages, sand sculptures, and Christmas stalls. A huge number of people gather here, for the fairytale Christmas parade in Valkenburg. The city is full of lights, laughter, love and, a cold breeze. Auli, in India: Winters in foreign are famous, but the winters in India are a whole other vibe. In India, winter is all about festivities and more festivals and, more festivals. There are sweets, lights, diyas and lots of garam chai to be seen and tasted while being in India. One such destination is Auli, located amidst the Himalayas. It is known as the skiing destination of India. With apple orchards, old oaks, and pine trees there is no limit to the natural beauty of Auli. Auli is famous for its skiing, but you can also enjoy many treks in the hills of the Garhwal Himalayas and get spellbound by the majestic mountains draped in snow. Auli is popular for its skiing activity, because of its cleanliness and beauty. It is located at 2800 meters above sea level and is home to the mountain ranges of Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat and Kamat Kamet. Many religious destinations are also located around Auli, and it is also said that Auli is blessed with the visit by Shankracharya. Kutch, in Gujarat: Kutch, also known as the White Desert of India, is an island that looks like a tortoise on the map. The tortoise resembling island is a majestic and surreal place in India to visit at least once in your lifetime. It has got its white colour from the presence of white salt. This white island comes to life during the Rann Utsav, which is held between December-February. During the Rann Festival, huge camp settlements are done with cultural programs, functions and adventure activities like a hot-air balloon. Kutch is also known to be the largest district of India, with a significantly low population. Kutch is located on the India-Pakistan border and you can see parts of Pakistan from here. It is also famous for the crafts and embroidery works, done by the household women in Kutch. Their art is a form of their power, creativity and expression. Kutch is also famous for the Flamingo Sanctuary and Wildlife sanctuary. Ziro Music Festival, in Arunachal Pradesh: The Ziro Music Festival is the most happening music festival in the lap of the green valley of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a festival that showcases independent artists and their talent, in India. It is an amalgamation of talent, music, vibrant culture and art. This music festival was initiated in 2012, by Bobby Hano and Menwhopause guitarist Anup Kutty, which spans for over four days and is hosted by the members of the Apatani tribe in Ziro. The Ziro valley is home to the Apatani tribe, who are famous for their hospitality and their love for music. This music festival gives a platform for independent artists to showcase their music.     Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie by Aparajita Jaiswal Tom Ford: The Fashion Genie 1 May 2021 FASHION Advertisement Among many of our favourite luxury brand designers, Thomas Carlyle Ford, an American fashion designer and filmmaker, is truly one of the most inspiring and looked upon creators of fashion. He launched his eponymous luxury brand in 2006, having previously served as the creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Ford currently also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Tom Ford had quite the journey, figuring out his interests. At age 16, he enrolled at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, but quickly dropped out. He moved to New York City to study art history at New York University where he met Ian Falconer, who took him to Studio 54 for the first time, spiking his interest in acting and directing. Ford dropped out after a year, focusing on acting in television commercials. Ford began studying interior architecture at The New School’s art and design college, Parsons, in New York City. He kept visiting Studio 54, where he realized he was gay. The club’s disco-era glamor ended up being a major influence on his later designs. Before his last year at New School, Ford spent a year and a half in Paris, where he worked as an intern in Chloé’s press office, inspiring his interest in fashion. He spent his final year at The New School studying fashion, but graduated with a degree in architecture. In an interview with The New York Times, Ford said, “If I was ever going to become a good designer, I had to leave America. My own culture was inhibiting me. Too much style in America is tacky. It’s looked down upon to be too stylish. Europeans, however, appreciate style.” At the time, Italian fashion house Gucci was struggling financially and was seeking to strengthen its women’s ready-to-wear presence as a part of a brand overhaul. The company’s creative director, Dawn Mello hired Ford as the brand’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer in 1990 and Ford moved to Milan. “I was talking to a lot of people, and most didn’t want the job,” Mello said. “For an American designer to move to Italy to join a company that was far from being a brand would have been pretty risky.” Ford’s role at Gucci rapidly expanded; he was designing menswear within six months, and shoes soon after that. He also took over Richard Lambertson left as design director in 1992, heading the brand’s ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising, and store design. In 1993, when he was in charge of designing eleven product lines, Ford worked eighteen-hour days. Although there were creative tensions between Ford and Maurizio Gucci, the company’s chairman and 50% owner, inspiring Maurizio Gucci wanted to fire Ford, Domenico De Sole insisted that he remain. Nonetheless, Ford’s work during the early 1990s was primarily behind the scenes; his contributions to Gucci were overshadowed by those of Mello, who was the company’s public face. In 1994, Ford was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci. By 1999, the house, which had been almost bankrupt when Ford joined, was valued at more than $4 billion. When Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1999, Ford was named Creative Director of that label as well. In April 2004, Ford parted ways with the Gucci group after he and CEO Domenico de Sole, who is credited as Ford’s partner in Gucci’s success, failed to agree with Pinault Printemps Redoute’s boss over control of the Group. He has since referred to this experience as “devastating” and as a “midlife crisis” because he had “put everything into that for fifteen years”. When Ford left in 2004, Gucci Group was valued at $10 billion, hiring four individuals to split the work Ford had done. After leaving Gucci, Ford launched a line of menswear, beauty, eyewear, and accessories in 2006, named after himself, “Tom Ford”. De Sole became chairman of the label. Ford has described “the Tom Ford customer” as international, cultured, well-traveled, and possessing disposable income. For women, he added “strong and intelligent women who know their own style”. From the time we’re born until we die, we’re kept busy with artificial stuff that isn’t important. Tom Ford First Lady Michelle Obama wore an ivory floor-length evening gown designed by Ford to Buckingham Palace in 2011. He has also dressed Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, Julianne Moore, Hugh Jackman, Jon Hamm, and Henry Cavill. Ford designed Daniel Craig’s suits for his last three James Bond films: Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. Jay Z released a song titled “Tom Ford” with “Tom Ford” rapped numerous times within the song. Ford responded that he was flattered and “it means that one has really penetrated and made an impact on popular culture.” Following the song’s release, Ford received a huge spike in online search engine queries. Ford has been called a “fashion icon” and a “style icon” and he was included in “All-TIME 100 Fashion Icons” list. Ford has been included in several best-dressed lists, such as International Best Dressed List,The Guardian’s “The 50 best-dressed over-50s”, and British GQ’s “50 Best Dressed Men in Britain 2015”. He was featured on the cover of the 2011 spring/summer issue of Another Man, giving his opinion on what makes the modern day gentleman. He won several awards including several VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards and Council of Fashion Designers of America. Ford is known for sexy clothes, making provocative statements, and creating racy advertisements. Ford’s designs convey a “sophisticated sex appeal” and he has been credited for “bringing sexy back”. His advertisement campaigns have drawn controversy for use of nudity and “provocative sexual imagery”. Ford is also known to pose with celebrities and models in his ad campaigns. Ford is not only a designer but also a creative artist. Ford directed the Academy Award-nominated films A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals. In March 2005, Ford announced the launch of his film production company, Fade to Black. In 2009 he made his directorial debut with A Single Man, based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. The drama stars Colin Firth as an LA-based, gay college professor, alongside Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult and Matthew Goode. The novel was adapted by David Scearce and Ford; Ford was also one of the producers. In 2015, Ford became attached to direct Nocturnal Animals, an adaptation of the Austin Wright novel Tony and Susan. The film was released in 2016. Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams played the lead roles of Tony and Susan. Michael Shannon, Armie Hammer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Isla Fisher co-starred in the film. The film received praise from critics, as well as winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Or ramp, in this case, setting a tone of global togetherness. NIF Global Launches The Day With A Sustainable Initiative Along with the divine and poetic displays by Paolo Sebastian , Weinsanto and Aintoinne Kareh , there was a hint of modernity served by a collaborative effort between the New York Institute of Fashion and the London School of Trends. This modernity, combined with thoughtfulness and awareness, paved the way for their showcase titled “Launchpad”. The showcase stood witness to young NIF Global designers representing India’s diverse cultural landscapes. The partnership was an array of innovative collections that presented a wonderful seamless fusion of luxury and sustainability. It was led by a 40-piece collection that redefined heritage craftsmanship like handwoven textiles and exquisite embroidery accompanied by more modern silhouettes for a more global audience. It was a play on sustainability by indulging eco-friendly fabrics with intricate craftsmanship and trend-forward designs. Paolo Sebastian Puts Australia On The Mark Hosting its first Australian designer ever, Dubai Fashion Week welcomed Paolo Sebastian with a showcase of a scenic blend between romance and contemporary elegance, paired with dreamy silhouettes, ethereal illusion tulle and fairytale-inspired designs that left the spectators in awe. It beautifully presented the essence of the designer’s signature style as it was a mirror to the flawless blend of tradition and modern innovation, transporting everyone in the audience to a world of fantasy. Weinsanto Brings Parisian Romance To Dubai Runway Bringing the French Parisian charm to the stage, DFW member Victor Weinsanto enraptured the spectators with his “Cauchemar in the Kitchen” collection, integrating the Georges kitchen theme into his designs. Weinsanto blended his signature style with modern Parisian suaveness. He drew inspiration from the venerated motifs of the world-famous Maxim restaurant, the collection showcased his jubilant print, a refined colour palette, with convoluted Nouveau-inspired embroidery. The entire showcase was a direct portrayal of the designer’s craft and creativity, mingled with art and storytelling. Antoinne Kareh Executes Visual Poetry “The Guardian Shadow” by Antoinne Kareh combined fashion with poetry to deliver an artfully explored showcase based on the interplay between light and darkness. The designer drew inspiration from the conceptuality of how shadow accompanies every individual and watches over them like Guardian Angels. The showcase depicted how shadows are pivotal for defining form, depth and dimensions. Kareh brought a sense of altruistic realism and vivacity to the pieces by adding fluid, flowy silhouettes and contrasts throughout the pieces. Velvety Couture’s Homage To Zaha Hadid’s Legacy The day was concluded with Velvety Couture ’s collection, which was inspired by Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Center. The showcase aimed to unveil the blend between architecture and fashion, translating fluid curves with dynamic designs. The abundance of elegance can be seen with fabrics like chiffon, taffeta and velvet in white, black, grey and silver palettes to give it that richness and depth. All the designers presented an amalgamation of fashion with romance, poetry and depth- which is also what we are mostly made of. That is exactly why fairytales appeal to us: we look for romance, and what better place to find it than in the very expression of self? The second day came to an exuberant finish, but the showcase of fashion is anything but halted because with lineups like such, all one does is wait for the next day!     SOCIETY by Aarti Singh A Good Woman 29 October 2022 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Over the years, generations even, women have been made to feel like in order to be a ‘good’ woman and desirable they need to be selfless, nurturing, sacrificing, always putting others’ needs ahead of their own. This deep seated yet irrational pedestal of being ‘wife-material’. Women are made to believe that they will be deemed perfect only if they think about the good of others first. This is one of the numerous ways how being more self-centred in choices has been the easiest way to villainise women. So today, when a woman decides that she has had enough of bearing people’s expectations and chooses to live life on her own terms, we don’t take over a second to label her as selfish. As a society, we love to villainise women. It’s our favourite timepass. As soon as we see a woman comfortable in her sexuality, concentrating on herself and not seeking constant validation, it irks our soul and pricks our ears. Generation after generation, we are fed with the framework of being the “ideal” woman. And more so than often this includes being able to cook well, looking after one’s family, being independent but not so independent as to threaten their male contemporaries; managing, juggling everything and being good at it. The list really does not end. And for all that matters, we can’t seem to trace where and when it commenced either. Every villainess you see, every single one of them is portrayed as this head strong woman who has problem trusting people, who is independent, highly educated and in a place of power as of to portray that this is what will happen if we give women power. They are always shown to be alone. Or cheated or abandoned. Why is it the prevalent thought that if a woman is successful and unabashed then she must be hard to love? What is it exactly that makes them hard to love? The fact that they aren’t dependent on someone’s validation? Or is it the fact that they are comfortable in their own selves? So quick question- who set this narrative? And had they ever met an actual living, breathing, strong woman in their life? Because it doesn’t seem like it. One would ask out of sheer curiosity that why are we served this narrative. The answer is simple, really. It is done in order to reinforce the popular idea of how successful, educated and modern women are usually selfish and in the wrong to not think about the population of the whole Earth before making decisions that doesn’t have anything to do with- well the population of the whole Earth. With this obscure message of misconceptions that have been so broadly and falsely advertised, we are not only equating women’s independence with arrogance and modernity with shamelessness, but it also projects highly educated women to be ill-mannered and inconsiderate. Truthfully, there is no woman who wore make up one day and ran away from her home the next, or a woman who got a promotion and decided to divorce her husband, or a woman who earned money and turned into a witch. But there are women who are seen as arrogant and ill- mannered just because they did not let anyone else’s idea of femininity describe them. It's sort of humorous as to how lipstick of a slightly darker shade carries the ability to put a woman on a pedestal, how portraying a woman successful and confident goes hand-in-hand with her being non-religious and how merely a haircut or piercing or tattoo holds the power to pronounce a woman pure or impure. And it’s absolutely hilarious how you can be educated, successful, rich, romantically settled, and doing well in every aspect of life yet still you will be forced to fit into a bogus mould of femininity to be considered a “good” woman. Honestly speaking, it is utterly baseless that society has a set of guidelines so as to judge what a conventional “good woman” looks like. You can’t enclose anyone in an invisible cage and expect them to grow at the same time. So it is about time that those guidelines should be either updated or done away with. Why is it the prevalent thought that if a woman is successful and unabashed then she must be hard to love? Let us first understand what Feminism means, because in India this word is highly victimized, accused, and bullied. Feminism means prophesying equality from the point of view of a woman. Unlike the meanings that this word is given in this country, it does not promote gender inequality or tries to prove that men are in any way inferior to women. It is just equivalent to the concept of gender equality only within the viewpoint of a woman. Now, there will come questions why this viewpoint is considered from a woman’s point of view, why there isn’t a term called menism. It’s a completely healthy argument, but there is one phenomenon that the world has landed on and it still hasn’t recovered from ever since the dawn of it. The phenomenon is nothing but the most crucial of the societal construct that our ancestors instilled in our minds, called Patriarchy. This term means to have a societal construct completely dominated, ruled, and exorcised by men. that women are the second citizens, unturned and incapable of making any decision even for themselves. This particular thing has led to centuries of oppression of women. Women were the ones who had to take a step back to follow the path of a man. A mother sacrificed her needs, her interests to raise a son, a wife left her family and comfort to foster a man to build his empire. There was an eternity-long sacrifice that women adsorbed, absorbed, and digested to make a man what he is today. This makes a man privileged and a privileged person’s point of view can diminish the idea of Equality. There are no shaming men here, it’s just that it is hard to give up the privileges. If you are the decision-maker of what ice cream to eat in your ice cream shop, you can obviously pick your favorite, but an outsider will ask about the availability of that ice cream. It is the same way in the world, a woman is not granted all she wants but a man can take anything he wants as granted. A man can wear whatever he wants, roam whenever and wherever he wants, have any type of friend circle as he wishes, etc. But, at each step of the way a woman has to climb a bigger mountain to enjoy those same mundane things that a man is freely doing. And thus, there is a need to look at what woman’s needs are and how we can address them to match at the same level as men. Hence, we are viewing this equality concept from the eyes of a woman. But, sadly this concept is pathologically broken into pieces in Indian society. Indian society thinks that feminism is the chivalry of women as a way to seek attention, as a way to disrespect their religion, and most importantly as a way to demean men. In reality, it boosts women to actually understand the viewpoint of men, to understand the struggles that men face. The point of feminism is never chivalry but peace and a sense of responsibility, credibility, but we have made it such chaos that there are no bounds to it. As in every construct, here also the reason that such misunderstanding of the terminology is due to unawareness of knowledge or its lack thereof. The concept of lacking this knowledge is in rural parts that have brought themselves up in a highly conservative stature. The unawareness on the other hand is the bigger evil that spurs out of educated, civilized people who pass any comment bashing the male gender in the banner of feminism. Feminism is not threatening a man with sexual harassment lawsuit or mocking when a man gets in trouble. Feminism is in understanding that both women and men have their flaws and quirks. That both genders need equal rights, support, and law to reach a point of ethical correctness. Feminism is upholding the banner that we all are humans and we all need the same things. Feminism is understanding one another, in a way it prompts gender sensitization. It is all that word equality resonates with its every alphabet. One thing is to be understood that the ladder is for the oppressed to climb to the same pedestal as the privileged not to raise one above another.
