AiSPi Wanderlust Diaries: Marzook, L’Afshar, And A Fashion Bender In Mumbai By Shriniwas Kodape AiSPi Wanderlust Diaries: Marzook, L’Afshar, And A Fashion Bender In Mumbai 25 April 2025 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement There are days in Mumbai when the air feels heavier, as if the city’s leaning in, waiting for something to happen. This was one of those days. On the top floors of The St. Regis Mumbai, the curtains pulled back, the champagne flowed too early, and a different kind of storm rolled in — a beautiful, high-fashion cyclone called AiSPi Wanderlust Diaries . Now, if you’ve never heard of AiSPi , let me put it this way — it’s not your typical, sterile pop-up pushing overpriced clichés. No, this is the stuff of fashion folklore, the kind of operation run by people who chase labels in alleyways of Antwerp and underground ateliers in Istanbul. They traffic in stories, not trends. And this weekend, they turned Mumbai into their playground. Marzook was there — those wild, sculptural bags that feel like tiny spaceships for your secrets, glittering like fever dreams under the ballroom lights. These weren’t bags you politely slung over your shoulder. No. These are bags you build an entire damn night around. You walk into a room with a Marzook, and you don’t just arrive — you declare war on subtlety. Then came L’Afshar . Minimalist? Sure. But not in that quiet, forgettable way. Sharp-edged, modern relics that look like they were carved out of glass by someone with a hangover and a god complex. I watched people — the loud, the shy, the ones pretending not to care — run their fingers over those cool, marble-like surfaces. They didn’t just want to carry them; they wanted to be the kind of person who could. And if you drifted past the handbags and martinis, you'd stumble onto things that didn't shout — but whispered in the most intoxicating ways. The Pen Stroke , with hand-drawn journals and prints that made you want to run away to somewhere lawless and write everything down. And The Charm Shop , selling tiny, sparkling talismans — little anchors in a city that never stops spinning. But here’s what most people won’t tell you: It wasn’t about the shopping. Not really. It was about what those pieces made you feel. It was about holding something that carried the fingerprints of another world. About standing in a room full of strangers and thinking, Damn, maybe Mumbai’s finally getting the fashion scene it deserves. And adding to this electric madness, AiSPi unveiled their new Spring/Summer 2025 collections — a breathtaking lineup from 30+ global designers , each piece a portal to some sun-drenched square in Valencia, a candlelit studio in Paris, or a wild rooftop atelier in Tbilisi. These weren’t just collections; they were declarations of where fashion is going next, and Mumbai got the first, intoxicating taste. By evening, the place wasn’t just a pop-up — it was a fever dream. People weren’t browsing; they were hunting. The room smelled like perfume, leather, ambition, and a little danger. And that’s exactly how it should be. Wanderlust Diaries wasn’t a polite fashion event. It was a beautiful, decadent act of rebellion. Proof that in this fast, crowded, endlessly noisy city, there’s still room for things that are rare, strange, and alive. Here’s to more nights like this. More stories told in silk, sequins, scribbled journals, and hard-edged acrylic bags. And to AiSPi — may they keep smuggling this beautiful madness across borders, bringing the world’s finest, strangest, most beautiful things straight into the heart of Mumbai. See you at the next one. Bring your chaos. And your wallet. - Where The Conversation Took Turns Like The Everest’s Terrain With Sahil Salathia
Where The Conversation Took Turns Like The Everest’s Terrain With Sahil Salathia by Anushka Sharma Where The Conversation Took Turns Like The Everest’s Terrain With Sahil Salathia 27 January 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement In a very interesting conversation with Mr. Sahil Salathia, we learnt far too much about how he perceives things outside the realm of acting and while he’s on set. Nevertheless, these conversations took turns like that of Everest(Pun Intended) and we loved him in that series! Movies aren’t all that Sahil Salathia is about. He also has his hands dipped in fashion and is quite a groundbreaking idol indeed. When asked about how he seeks to break the fashion stereotypes for the men as a fashion icon himself, he said, “Firstly, thank you for addressing me as a fashion icon: I’m humbled! Considering the boundaries that lie in fashion, they are far too many for men and women to tackle. One shouldn’t have a lot of seriousness around these boundaries. You wanna wear colour, wear colour, you wanna wear black nail paint, do that. Life is art, hence, be artistic and break these so-called boundaries! The key is to not take yourself so seriously!” The key indeed is to not take ourselves so seriously, after all! Fashion is art you wear and Sahil has made it look beyond surreal. Elucidating upon how it was like to work for the series, “Everest”, he fondly recalls, “I got a Lines Gold Award for the best debut and it was an incredible experience. We shot for a year in Dokriani glacier, and shot for a year and a half in total, considering the kind of a perfectionist that Ashutosh sir is. We really put in the work on this series, and Target and Everest are both available on Hotstar is indeed worth all the admiration! Ashutosh sir is a sheer gentleman, and I got to learn so much from the young cast and the fantastic actors that were a part of this series.” While there is so much that the actor has already got himself into, we couldn’t help but seek a glimpse of the upcoming projects he is set for in the future. He tells us all about them and how! “I’ve done two very very interesting parts in two very very very interesting web series. I can’t talk too much about it, but one is produced by Nikhil Advani and the other is produced by Viacom. I’d let them come up with more announcements, but I’ve finished filming and it was a bliss indeed!” Talking about the roles that he has particularly loved during his current tenure in the industry, he fondly recalls, “I can’t really pick a role that is closest to my heart, but I particularly loved my role as “Arjun Sabharwal”, the mountaineer from Everest, because it was my first and it was with Ashutosh, who is literally a legend. There are two more very interesting roles I’ve done which you’ll get to see soon.” As a groundbreaker in fashion and an actor whose skills speak for himself, we sought more of him than just acting. We wanted to know all about his viewpoint towards therapy for mental health issues amongst men and women in today's age and climate. He says, “Mental health is one of the pressing issues in today’s times. Considering how rapidly dynamic our lifestyles are, it’s imperative to understand the sheer importance of how mental health impacts us. Since I’m not a professional, I’d recommend one should seek help when one deems fit. Mental health is the most intrinsic part of our being and should not be ignored. Personally, I love to meditate, go to the gym and help release my endorphins through doing things that I absolutely enjoy!” As we furthered onto the topics of feminism and women empowerment, he stated, “Women empowerment is something we should all be very passionate about, since it’s not just for women, but also for the men. Considering how much we have suppressed women in the past, one ought to stand up for their rights in today’s scenario to make amends for the past. Feminism is about the rights that women rightfully deserve. It is about equality and being fair and I think everybody should believe in that.” As an actor who believes that the odds to be ever in his favour, he has an advice for everyone who seeks to get into this industry: “My advice would be to stay disciplined, stay balanced and manifest while you put in the effort. You get luckier when you work harder. Ask yourself one very important question, “Are you passionate about art or do you just wish to be famous?” Ultimately, this is what you should ask yourself before you plan to get into the industry. It’s the art that ultimately takes you places.” Art is something that is exuded through your passion for something, and the art of movies is to be known and perfected than be swooned over for the fancies that surround it. Nobody does it better than Sahil Salathia indeed. - K-Pop Fashion And Its Impact On Global Wardrobe
K-Pop Fashion And Its Impact On Global Wardrobe by Yashi Srivastava K-Pop Fashion And Its Impact On Global Wardrobe 10 February 2023 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement K-pop is more than a music genre in 2022. It is a wave, a trend, a bold choice of fashion coupled with luxury and serving looks! Korean pop music has its roots fixed in the 90s, but after the rise of artists like PSY and BTS, K-pop has taken over the global wardrobe, not just with its music but also fashion, style, and charisma. Why shouldn’t it? After all, K-pop idols are some of the most beautiful faces that you would come across. It is thus, not surprising to know that most of them are headlining several luxury fashion shows across the world and many have become the face of brands like Celine, Dior, Milan, Gucci, and more. So, how is K-pop influencing the wardrobe of the entire fashion world? We shall discuss the same in this article. The rise of K-pop fashion As mentioned already, it all began with during the early 90s when Seo Taiji and Boys created a concoction of South Korean tradition with western instruments and highlighted the same with stunning choreography! The world was in awe and since then, there's been no looking back for the music genre. With time, K-pop fashion promoted fashion accessories like bucket hats, loose fitting T-shirts and jeans, flannels, and more. By the late 90s, K-pop music soared since the term ‘idol’ was coined which led the musicians to become more than performers - they became celebrities and the global (wardrobe) domination of K-pop thus began. Currently, K-pop fashion dabbles between streetwear and sportswear off-stage and everything that’s luxury, starting from Gucci, Versace, Dior, Cartier, Celine, etc. The current popularity of K-pop fashion It is safe to consider K-pop fashion as one of the biggest trends of 2022. From baggy clothes to skirts, to anoraks, from Girls Generation being invited to 2012 Mulberry show in London to BTS attending the 2018 Billboard Awards in complete Gucci outfits - Korean pop culture fashion has certainly come a long way! It is not wrong to say that the digital media has played a prominent role in taking the K-pop popularity to a whole new level, not only in East- Asia and South-Asia but also the West. However, it is not just K-pop idols that have influenced the world wardrobe and have been a part of the global fashion world. Korean fashion brands such as Gentle Monster and Minju Kim are making waves across the world with their fresh styles and K-pop inclined clothing. In fact, popular brands like Adidas have now come up with merchandise that is completely influenced by the K-pop genre, and the sales are on an all-time high! The influence of K-pop idols in global fashion K-pop idols aren't just singers anymore - they are ambassadors of South Korean culture, style, and fashion - and the global fashion world is loving their charisma! From BTS’ V to GOT7’s Jackson and Blackpink’s Lisa, everyone is known for their unique sense of style and cosmic fashion trends. They are breaking the internet with their stunning fashion sense and persona! In fact, they can make or break a fashion trend within minutes and scream of luxury and charm in every sense of the word. It is thus, not uncommon for top fashion brands to seek out idols from K-pop groups like Blackpink, Twice, Aespa, Monsta X, TxT, Red Velvet, and more to promote their brand via advertisements and fashion shows. Why shouldn’t they? After all, K-pop idols are known for their extravagant sense of fashion loaded with high-end accessories and vibrant colors, both on hair and their outfits! However, their fashion isn’t only limited to the stage. From airport looks to casual outings, K-media has its eyes on them and most idols do not disappoint! And let’s not forget the influence they have on some of the most popular fashion brands, like Louis Vuitton, who moved an entire fashion show to Seoul, South Korea, only for the legends known as BTS to promote the brand. In fact, the collection was sold out within a few minutes of the event. BTS’ airport look, where they were dressed in LV clothes from top to bottom, also sold out within a few hours after photos were released online. While BTS have their own contribution in bringing the world’s attention to K-pop culture, it is the aestheri and eye-catching visuals of K-pop idols from several groups that keeps the genre’s popularity growing. EXO Kai for Gucci and Bobbi Brown, IU for Gucci, Red Velvet Irene for Prada, Blackpink’s Jisoo for Cartier and Dior, Aespa for Givenchy, EXO Sehun for Dior, are some of the popular K-pop names who are faces or brand ambassadors of some high-end luxury brands. Wrapping up K-pop idols, in recent times, have proven that they are way ahead of the curve in terms of fashion and media both, and they aren’t stopping anytime soon! So, get ready, because K-pop is and will be the moment for several coming years in trends, style, and of course, influential fashion. Blob - It is not just the outfit that defines fashion for K-pop idols. They are also about style that sends and spreads a message, the make-up that accentuates the beauty of the IDOL irrespective of the gender, and visuals that are as stunning as they can get. So, today we shall talk about K-pop and the way it is impacting global fashion! There is fashion with style and then, there is fashion with inspiration - K-pop delivers a bit of both and in a way, that you cannot take your eyes off of the idols. - Heritage Meets Haute: Zhuojiaren x Red Palace Aw Collection Stuns At Thailand Fashion Week
Heritage Meets Haute: Zhuojiaren x Red Palace Aw Collection Stuns At Thailand Fashion Week By Ananya Patankar Heritage Meets Haute: Zhuojiaren x Red Palace Aw Collection Stuns At Thailand Fashion Week 13 July 2025 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement From mandarin collars to sweeping capes: East‑West dialogue redefined for AW25/26 Blending Chinese heritage with modern structure, ZHUOJIAREN x RED PALACE’s AW25/26 collection presented a quiet strength—where sculpted silhouettes, rich textiles, and refined detailing met on equal footing. When Zhuojiaren joined forces with Red Palace at Thailand Fashion Week ’s Femme runway, it wasn’t just a show, it was a statement. The collection was built with intention on clarity and control. The Femme lineup leaned into precision: strong silhouettes, minimal styling, and a deliberate use of texture and tradition. Rather than dramatizing heritage, the designers distilled it—offering a wardrobe that was structured, symbolic, and fully modern. At the heart of this collaboration are two distinct yet deeply connected design houses. Zhuojiaren, led by creative mentor Benjamin Wong, is known for its refined tailoring and intellectual approach to form. Partnering with Red Palace—a heritage label founded in 2007 by Zhang Yaru and her daughter Deng Liyuan, who now heads design at Zhuojiaren—the collection draws from a shared lineage. Their vision is clear: to merge tradition with clarity, and craft garments that carry the weight of legacy without ever feeling nostalgic. The Autumn/Winter 2025–26 collection is rooted in the idea of evolution—not as departure from heritage, but as a refined progression. Drawing on symbols of Chinese dynastic elegance, the designers explored how tradition can be reshaped through precision and restraint. The collection doesn’t speak loudly; instead, it holds presence through silhouette, material, and form. There’s a quiet dialogue running through each look—between East and West, past and present, heritage and intention. Rather than reference history directly, the pieces echo it: in the fold of a sleeve, a collar line, a choice of fabric. It’s heritage, held in tension with modern clarity. The collection incorporated a palette which was rich, controlled, and intentionally regal—deep emerald, garnet, sapphire, and midnight black formed the foundation, punctuated by ivory, steel gray, and hints of muted gold. Fabric choices leaned into tactility: brocades with quiet sheen, wool blends with sculptural weight, and satin that moved with understated fluidity. Embroidery was used sparingly but meaningfully—often tonal, sometimes metallic, always placed with precision. The collection relied on texture to speak where embellishment might once have been louder, creating depth without drama. Every material choice reinforced the collection’s core philosophy: heritage reinterpreted through minimalism and balance. Additionally, the runway opened to a full house at Bangkok’s EM Quartier, with Zhuojiaren x Red Palace positioned as one of the day’s standout presentations. On a stark runway that mirrored the collection’s restraint, each look emerged with composure and intention. Industry observers quickly noted the collaboration’s clarity of vision—refined, composed, and resistant to spectacle. The phrase “a dynasty of design” began circulating backstage and across social media, capturing the inter-generational depth and quiet power on display. In a week of bold gestures, this was a collection that stood out by doing less, and doing it with precision. This collection wasn’t just offering a highlight of Thailand Fashion Week—it was a refined case for the future of cultural fashion. It showed how heritage, when edited with care and confidence, can move forward without losing its core. In an industry often driven by noise, this collection chose discipline over drama. And in doing so, it left a lasting impression: that quiet design, when grounded in purpose, speaks the loudest. - The Fractured Fairytale
SOCIETY by Akash Khatri The Fractured Fairytale 1 December 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement In June 2016, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales began a relationship with Meghan Markle, a former actress and a celebrity philanthropist. The engagement was announced on November 27, 2017, by Harry’s father Charles, Prince of Wales. It generated generally positive comments about having a mixed-race person as a member of the royal family, especially in regard to Commonwealth countries with populations of blended or native ancestry. According to DailyMail, by an energy firm they have been branded the least eco-friendly Royals that found that their African tour had generated a hefty carbon footprint of an estimated three tonnes of CO2 each. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex engaged considerably less with environmental charities and engagements as compared to other members of the Royal family. Markle retired from acting after her engagement and began the lengthy process of becoming a British citizen. Meghan was baptized by the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and was confirmed her into the Church of England on March 6, 2018. The private ceremony took place in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace and was performed with water from the River Jordan. The marriage ceremony was held on May 19 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. It was reportedly agreed in advance that excess funds generated from the BBC broadcast of the ceremony would go to a charity chosen by the newlywed couple. In April 2020, Feeding Britain was nominated to receive £90,000 from the BBC, they provided food packages to families in food poverty. After the wedding, the Duke and Duchess lived at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace in London. They later moved to Frogmore Cottage in the Home Park of Windsor Castle. The Crown Estate refurbished the cottage at a cost of £2.4 million which was paid out of the Sovereign Grant. The Duke has reportedly paid back this amount in full. The Duchess gave birth to a son on May 6, 2019 named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor who is seventh in the line of succession to the British throne. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s office moved to Buckingham Palace and officially closed on March 31, 2020, when the Sussexes ceased “undertaking official engagements in support of the Queen”. After some months in Canada and the United States, the couple bought a house in June 2020 on the former estate of Riven Rock in Montecito, California. Currently, they live in a $14million mansion in Santa Barbara. Despite a few interruptions to his parental leave, the royal is said to have been sharing the load of the new-born with his wife. They have been following modern parenting techniques for their son’s upbringing. They even made a shocking decision to move from the UK and out of the royal spotlight. In 2020, harry and Meghan decided to step down as senior members of the royal family. 95% of the couple’s income was given to them annually by Charles, Harry’s father as part of his income from the Dutchy of Cornwell. They announced that they would balance between United kingdom and North America while also seeking financial independence as well as continuing to support their charities and the Queen. In March 2020, Harry’s appearance at the opening of the Silverstone Experience in Silverstone Circuit together with racing driver Lewis Hamilton was his final solo engagement as a senior royal before he and his wife officially stepped down on 31 March. News was in the air later that month after the duke and duchess recorded a video message for Times 100 urging Americans to vote, just weeks before the November 3 elections that the royal would consider running for president. Surprisingly the close folks denied any news of Meghan’s intentions in politics. According to observations though Prince Harry appears to improve his relationship with his brother Prince William they are not as close as they once were, on the other hand, it’s unlikely Meghan will ever want to return as she couldn’t achieve her desire to change the world while working as a member of the royal family. However, Prince Harry doesn’t share the same political ambitions as his wife and would want to work to help the disadvantaged. They have apparently burnt some bridges that now seem to be beyond repair. Harry is believed to be hurt after his request to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on his behalf was denied by courtiers as he is no longer a working member of the Royal Family. The same has been denied by his grandmother the Queen, who is believed to be unaware of the request from Harry and has continued to keep the door open for his return to frontline duties. After resettling, the couple seems to have unveiled new Hollywood careers. They have found a yet to be known production company and signed a multilayer deal with 193 million worldwide subscribers company, Netflix which will pay them to make documentaries, feature films, children’s programming and scripted shows. The couple releases a statement stating, ” Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us.” Author Ingrid Seward slammed the way the couple marked Remembrance Day. Though the Sussex’s appeared to be on their own in the vast Los Angeles Cemetery, they had employed the services of celebrity fashion photographer to record their every scripted move after snaps showed the pair laying an all-green wreath. Royal author Sean Smith whose book Meghan Misunderstood revolves around the former Suits actress feels that within a week Meghan went from being a human right’s campaigner to Prince Harry’s hottie, within a week. The people want old Harry back but it seems like he is now lost forever. SEARCH Why India is the most depressed country in the world? - From The Silver Screen To Human Rights Advocacy With Award Winning Actress Sheena Chohan
From The Silver Screen To Human Rights Advocacy With Award Winning Actress Sheena Chohan By Anushka Sharma From The Silver Screen To Human Rights Advocacy With Award Winning Actress Sheena Chohan 21 August 2024 COVER STORIES Advertisement L’utopia Magazine recently had the pleasure of speaking with the multi-talented Sheena, who has carved a niche for herself in both the Indian and international film industries. With a Cannes accolade, numerous awards, and an inspiring role as the ambassador for United for Human Rights , Sheena’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. In this conversation, she opens up about her experiences, her upcoming projects, and her passion for human rights. How has the journey been for you lately, Sheena? Sheena:It's been incredibly exciting! Recently, I won three awards for my film Amar Prem, which premiered at Cannes and has already garnered about 15 awards. It’s a beautiful short film, an emotional drama about a love triangle, reminiscent of classic stories like Silsila. My role as a devoted wife who discovers her husband’s illness was deeply challenging yet rewarding, and receiving recognition for it has been a dream come true. Your film’s success at Cannes is incredible! How was your experience at the festival? Sheena: Having my film premiere at the main tent at Cannes was surreal. But this year has been non-stop for me. I recently completed my Hollywood debut in a film called Nomad, directed by Taron Lexton, who's now working on a major project with Tom Cruise. Creating characters with such a talented team was a pure collaboration that pushed me to explore my craft in new ways. The international exposure has been amazing, and I’m eager to continue working with passionate directors and storytellers. How does working in Hollywood compare to Bollywood? Are there significant differences? Sheena: The working styles are different, yes. Hollywood tends to be more organized and professional, while Bollywood, though also organized, has its unique, more spontaneous energy. However, the dedication to making impactful cinema is the same in both industries. I believe the lines between Hollywood and Bollywood are blurring, especially with the rise of OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon, which are bringing diverse stories to global audiences. Speaking of OTT platforms, what do you think the future holds for the industry? Sheena: I’m not a trade analyst, so I can’t predict the future, but I’m excited about the opportunities OTT platforms are creating. This year, I’ll be seen in a web series called Bhayava, where I play a she-devil, a role inspired by characters like Maleficent. OTT has opened up space for strong female leads and character-driven stories, which is fantastic for actors like me who crave diverse roles. You’ve also made significant strides as a UN Human Rights Ambassador. Can you share a bit about that journey? Sheena: Absolutely! I’ve been an ambassador for the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights for nearly a decade now. This year, I was honored with the Presidential Award in America, signed by President Biden, for reaching 170 million people with human rights education. My ultimate goal is to make human rights education mandatory in schools across India, as I believe it’s crucial for creating a positive change in society. It’s a cause that I’m deeply passionate about, and I’m committed to using my platform to further this mission. That’s truly inspiring. On the film front, what can we look forward to from you next? Sheena: I am thrilled about my Bollywood debut in Sant Tukaram, a historic biopic directed by Aditya Om, where I play a powerful lead role. It’s a dream project for me, given the depth and intensity of the character. I’ve always dreamed of being an actor since I was two years old, and now, I’m living that dream. You’ve had an impressive journey, training in theater and working across different film industries. What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Sheena:My advice would be simple: Don’t give up. This industry is full of setbacks, rejections, and challenges, but perseverance is key. Also, be professional and committed to your craft. Dedication and commitment can take you a long way, and you never know when your big break might come. Are there any directors you’re particularly eager to work with in the future? Sheena: I admire the work of directors like Anubhav Sinha, Raju Hirani, Shekhar Kapur, and Rajamouli. Each brings something unique to the table, whether it’s drama, comedy, or epic cinema. I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible filmmakers so far, and I look forward to collaborating with more in the future. You’ve worked in both Bollywood and the South Indian film industry. How do the two compare? Sheena: The Southern film industry is more personalized, with a strong emphasis on relationships and a family-like atmosphere on set. Bollywood, on the other hand, operates more like a corporate entity with agencies and PR's involved. But, as I mentioned earlier, the industry is evolving, and there’s a lot of crossover happening now between Bollywood and South Indian cinema. Finally, what kind of stories do you gravitate towards, and what excites you most about your work? Sheena: I love stories that are character-driven, whether it’s drama, comedy, or epic biopics. One of my all-time favorite films is Avatar by James Cameron. I’m particularly drawn to roles that allow me to explore different facets of human emotions and tell relatable stories that resonate with audiences. Through the conversation, it was evident that Sheena is not just an actor but a passionate advocate for human rights, a dreamer who has turned her childhood aspirations into reality, and an artist who continues to seek out meaningful stories to tell. Her journey serves as an inspiration to many, and we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in her remarkable career. - Ritabhari Chakraborty talks about her adopted school, The Ideal School for the deaf
Ritabhari Chakraborty talks about her adopted school, The Ideal School for the deaf by Aparajita Jaiswal Ritabhari Chakraborty talks about her adopted school, The Ideal School for the deaf 24 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement The beautiful, smart and accomplished actress, Ritabhari Chakraborty, talks to Editor-in-chief, Aparajita Jaiswal in a freewheel chat about her latest film Fatafati, which is centred around body positivity. The actress excitedly exclaims that the film is in her mother tongue, Bengali. With the shooting wrapped up, the film is due to release in merely a few days, creating much anticipation in the minds of Ritabhari's adoring fans. The film is about a plus sized or rather a double XL model's journey and how she breaks the norms of “fashion” that we believe in; that women should have a certain kind of a body to be in fashion. The film talks about how girls should not measure their happiness and health by the stereotypical body shown in films. Ritabhari excitedly says, "this is the project that I'm currently looking forward to the most and want everybody to also look forward to with me." With an industry that is so unbelievably hard to make a mark in, each artist faces the trouble of understanding and bearing with the process. Ritabhari gives her perspective on the matter. "I think anyone who's starting off in the industry, in the film industry, the first thing you should know is acting. A lot of people think if you look good, if you're pretty, if you have a certain presence, that that's enough to become an actor. Trust me, that's absolutely not true! The first thing you need to know is how to act, second is you need to know that there are going to be days when you have no work and you have to be okay with it when you see your other friends, your colleagues people of your profession who are getting jobs when you're not as much patience is the key. You have to know in advance that there will be days when you just have to be patient and believe in yourself. "Thirdly, you have to carve your own path of whatever success means to you, whatever you are meant to do as an actor because every actor is different. Every personality is different. If you're aspiring to be Katrina Kaif, you cannot be Katrina Kaif because she is her. If you're aspiring to be Alia Bhatt, but you cannot be Alia because she is her. You have to aspire to be something that's original. That's the only way you can be seen and heard by people, because when they already have an Alia Bhatt who is so incredible, why would they want another one?," Ritabhari says correctly. Ritabhari played a woman priest in the film Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti, a film that focused on menstruation and how when are not impure. "I think I get personally attached to all my roles. My last super hit film, Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti, where I've played a women priest, broke so many norms as it spoke about menstruation and how women are not impure. The film broke such taboos, giving so many women the platform to become women priests. This is something that will always be very close to my heart, so I think I'm very attached to my character Shabari." Ritabhari talks about the challenges one might face in the industry, one of them being comparing yourself with others, their successes and their journey. "I think when everyone is doing so much that you tend to compare yourself and your journey to other people, and I really feel like that can be a real heartbreaker and a real problem in your way because your journey has to be yours. If you keep comparing yourself, you'll never be happy and you'll never be grateful for the work you are getting. Ritabhari is a riveting book enthusiast. Her inspiration spans from Indian and Loiuse Hay to Shonda Rhimes’ book “The year of yes" to Shonda Rhimes as a producer, writer and Oprah Winfrey but especially her mother. As an actress, she looks up to Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra amongst many more. "Deepika Padukone is such a huge inspiration. Priyanka Chopra, the more you say, you still turn up short. Women in the business are surviving through this patriarchal and hard business. I get inspired by women every single day." Ritabhari Chakraborty adopted the Ideal school for the deaf when she was merely 16. She expresses how it has been a life changing journey as it keeps her grounded. Ritabhari strongly feels her purpose is more than being an actor and she feels proud to be the mother of 84 children. "When I was a kid, I realized that I can technically change the lives of these children and took it up and I'm so glad I did. This is one thing I'll always be proud of. More than how grateful they should be or they are of me, I am more grateful to be their parent, their foster guardian because being their foster guardian means that I get to make changes in the lives of all these kids. I get to see them grow up and become something of their own. And they're so alienated in the society deaf children are as they have the toughest time adjusting to the world and to people, everyone else. They made me one of their own and that makes my heart melts. I celebrate everything with them, all festivals, my birthday, all of it. This is a blessing; God blessed me in the biggest way possible." Ritabhari Chakraborty comments on body positivity and says one need not fret about their body type whether it is healthy or skinny. We should be proud of our bodies as its god given and hereditary as well. As she works for a school for the deaf, she realises just how important it is to have everything functioning just right. It is a miracle that we have bodies that breathe for us and function correctly. Looking at movie stars, magazine covers and celebrities makes us think that that is how we should look. She believes it is important to break that mentality. Additionally, Ritabhari sends her love to all her fans, "Thank you so much for loving me. Thank you so much for being part of my journey and the life I lead, what I do, my achievements, my failures, all of which I put in front of you and you get to see. One of the reasons I do not shy away from anything, whether it be posting about my health conditions or mental health issues on social media and talking about it openly in interviews is because I want you to know I’m a human. I'm flawed just like you and I'm perfect and amazing just like you. So if I can inspire even a small margin of people, women especially, to be themselves, work hard and achieve their dreams, I think that would mean a lot to me." Women in the business are surviving through this patriarchal and hard business. I get inspired by women every single day.
