The first genuine curiosity for the ones who are not familiar with this name would be who is Alexander McQueen? Alexander McQueen was a famous British fashion designer who brought a revolution in the fashion industry with his rebellious fashion innovations back in the 1980s. He got himself in the fashion industry quite early in his life but soon his flamboyant and out-of-the-box and bold fashion styles brought him under the spotlight. McQueen’s early runway collections developed his reputation for controversy and shock tactics with trousers aptly named “bumsters” and a collection titled “Highland Rape”. These collections had also made people from the Brit fashion industry cringe, but eventually, his talent prevailed, and he became known for his dramatic and extraordinary fashion shows and cat-walks which were sheer head-turners for everyone. He was also one of the first fashion designers who worked with Indian models in London. Some of McQueen’s accomplishments included being one of the youngest designers to achieve the title “British Designer of the Year”, which he won four times between 1996 and 2003 also he was into a partnership deal with the Gucci group and his own label which he founded in the year 1992. By the end of the year 2007, McQueen had his own fashion house established in the cities of London, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, and Las Vegas. Coming to his personal life, he was gay and quite vocal about his sexuality and he never hid anything from the world. But in his later life, he became addicted to drugs and even was depressed. In February 2010 he hanged himself in his home in London and left the entire world in shock and remorse. His psychologists said that he was into depression for three years consecutively and as an escapade, he was into heavy drugs. At the time of Alexander McQueen’s death, he had an eighty percent finished Autumn/Winter collection. 16 pieces of this collection were presented during Paris Fashion Week on 8 March 2010 as a tribute to this great fashion designer. A young, goofy, introvert whose life changed when she entered the world of modeling through Miss India, moving out of her shell. "I thought that there's so much more that I could do and I'm not just this shy person. I can go out there in the world and try to have big dreams and I can achieve whatever I want if I put my mind to it," Mannat goes on tell us "I am really glad that I took that scary step of coming to a different city from a town where everything was my comfort alongside my my family. Taking that leap of faith, coming here and working for my dreams every day, I feel like that is commendable and that is the reason that I do this. I want to be an actor and I love what I do. I love where my life is going to go and the direction that I'm on. And that's all that I've got." Mannat Singh expresses how as an actor she wishes to bring the character to life and also be true to the character she is playing. As an actor you're always striving and being fearless enough to take chances. "The whole point acting us to bring the character to life. Everybody has a process which is very different and it's a very subjective thing. It differs from person to person, actor to actor. So I don't think there's a set way of performing this art but I feel it depends on the person and the actor." There are several stages of being an actor in a show or a film. There are certain thrilling aspects and there are certain parts where hard work and focus is key. Mannat comments on the same, "I feel that I embrace and enjoy the whole process. From getting the script and reading the script, understanding the writer's point of view to actually bringing the character to life and adding my own personal touch, the whole process is extremely thrilling to me. When you're auditioning and you're going about the scene and performing in front of people, I feel like there comes a point for me where I'm knee deep into the character that I start improvising. So, when I'm improvising, I am really getting under the skin of the character and it's just coming really naturally to me. That is the point where I know that I can do this. That particular point is very exciting and thrilling for me." "Not having explored many genres yet, I would be really excited to do a thriller or mystery film or show but the most difficult genre to perform, in my opinion, is comedy, because I feel like if you can make the audience laugh and you know it all comes with ease to you, is the most difficult thing to do. If ever got a chance, I'm sure that I'll have to work really hard. As a person, I believe I'm funny and have a good sense of humor but while performing a comedic role, I believe it will be one of the most difficult things to do but I’d still like to explore that." Having asked what present day mega director inspires her and she would like to be directed by, Mannat answers with a slight glow in her eye as she talks about her inspiration, "The filmmaker that inspires me the most and that I would love to work with in the future is Sanjay Leela Bhansali as I have just really liked his work since I was a little child. I've been watching him since Devdas and then I absolutely loved guzaarish and Ram Leela, eventually all the series that he's made, all the great films that he's made till date. I like his process, the way that he makes his characters a certain way, the whole direction process and it's just very thrilling to the eye from an audience's point of view. I would like to be directed by him." Mannat believes that as an actor we must pursue and the amount of effort and work one puts in their art will always prove fruitful. As an actor, with all hardships one faces, one must always keep going and pushing their boundaries without a shadow of doubt. She speaks about her father who is a motivational speaker, she says he always said, "Mannat you will be really glad if you give it your all, if you have tried really hard as you’ll never have regrets. Don't give up. This is my dream and this is what I want to work for. That's stuck with me and that's what I tell myself. Even on days when I'm feeling low, I don't get up and I'm not able to do what I want to but there are days that you have to pick yourself up and remind yourself of the purpose that you have aspired to achieve." As I started uploading more and more content, many tourists and boards of different countries started reaching out to me to create content on my YouTube channel. After that, I got great views you know so that’s when I decided this was the best way to make my love for travel sustainable.” When asked what she looks for in a new project before signing yes to it, Barkha reveals that other than the standard considerations regarding production and platform, the storyline and character offered to her plays an extremely important role. Barkha has had the opportunity to work alongside Sushmita Sen and claims and claims she had a wonderful experience. While contributing to wildlife and nature are some of her alternate interests, Barkha digs deeper by expressing the challenges one faces in the show industry. “I think, at least for me the most challenging part is showing restraint. A lot of people say it’s very important to select the right project. So, that is most challenging because as an actor you’re tempted to do every project that comes your way . Having the ability to pick and choose your projects is something that I feel is very challenging because every character requires a different dialect and a whole lot of work. I never bring up long hours, travel, staying away or not having weekends as challenges because all of that comes as part and parcel of being an actor. Lack of nourishment can lead to dull, pale and dry skin. Winter weather affects all skin types. Some basics to keep your skin radiant and glowing: MOISTURISE Keep your skin hydrated! The cold winter air pulls moisture from your skin leaving it dry and itchy. Protect the natural oils by using a ceramide-rich cream. Try moisturizers with added vitamin C or vitamin E. For added protection, slip on socks or gloves to help the cream soak in better. A thermostat might suck in the hydration causing dry air which is bad for your skin, use a humidifier to add the moisture back. Hydrate We tend to not feel much thirsty during the cold but our body loses water in so many ways. Keep your body stocked with fluids to avoid the dullness. Health experts recommend drinking at least half a gallon a day. Sweater itch Winter skin is fragile, avoid materials that tend to irritate you as they may result in rashes. If you feel itchy, wear a cotton t-shirt underneath or use softer materials such as cashmere or fleece. Prefer lighter fabrics to synthetic ones. Use lukewarm water Hot water leaves our skin dry and flaky as it washes away the natural hydrating oils. Use lukewarm water, it helps loosen the dirt and also avoids the irritation. Try cutting down on shower time and temperature too, avoid the long hot tempting showers. Change your skincare A light moisturizing lotion might have been sufficient during the sunny summer days but it won’t do any good in the harsh winters. Use heavy rich creams with ingredients such as botanical oil, hyaluronic acid, glycerine, niacinamide and bakuchiol . Though the warm winter sun feels good but the UV rays are still harmful, use a good SPF sunscreen with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Avoid products that contain alcohol as they make your skin dry. Try overnight masks. Layer using a toner, serum and facial oils such as virgin coconut oil or grapeseed oil. From Ayurveda to Yoga and festivals, even buttons, exhibit Her glorious culture, and a splendour that my country really is! Amongst the many spectacular factors that help India stand out from the western countries is the way Indians dressed – back in time. So, when we talk about Indian attire, there is no way that we wouldn’t talk about the exuberance that flow from the oldest Indian fabric used for weaving attires – handloom! Before the Britishers took over our beautiful country, Indians wore attired made only from handloom fabric. So, yes, the history and heritage of Indian handloom goes way back in time and in this article, we shall throw some light on the rich history of Indian handloom. What is handloom? Handloom was originally a variety of wooden frames used by artisans to weave fabrics out of them. The fabrics usually came from natural fibre including cotton, wool, jute, silk, etc. The procedure involved spinning the yarn followed by coloring to weaving the fabric on the loom – the final product came to be known as handloom. The history of Indian handloom – Early Days The history of Indian handloom takes us back to the Indus Valley civilization, when the first evidence of the fabric came up. Ancient India was the only producer of raw cotton and even exported the same to other countries, including Rome, China, and European nations. In fact, back in the time, every village in the country has its own weavers who spent hours in making attires like saree and dhoti to fulfil the clothing needs of the villagers. The beauty of the time was that the Indian handloom, in its beginning, was the purest material and the same showed when people wore it. The history of Indian handloom – The Gandhian Era Even though India enjoyed a golden phase of handloom heritage, its popularity went down once British took over the country. In order to increase the consumption and production of the yarn, Britishers used violence and coercion on the workers and weavers. The machine-made imported yarn made it difficult for the poor workers to keep up with the production, and thus, led to the downfall of the fabric. Most workers started working for the middlemen and traders, and the authenticity of Indian handloom shook to the core. However, during the Gandhian era, the age of handlooms was revived through Swadeshi Movement, where Mahatma Gandhi re-introduced the spinning wheel or ‘charkha’ to continue the production of khadi products. Since every Indian was involved in spinning the ‘charkha,’ the economy of the country saw a massive upgrade! People burnt the imported clothes and wore khadi everywhere, which even led to closing of mills in Manchester. The history of Indian handloom – Post Independence Even after India earned Her independence, textile industry continued to bloom and different weaving styles and fabrics were introduced. Even though, handloom didn’t rise exactly as high as it did before British colonisation, it was still widely used. The beauty of Indian handloom today Today, the cost of natural fibre is blowing by leaps and bounds because most people are not interested in buying the same these days. Most Indians prefer cheaper fabric and don’t really connect with the rich heritage of Indian handlooms. Khadi products, today, have a high cost, in comparison to other materials, and thus, not many regular people in India can afford to buy the fabric. Even so, the beauty of Indian handloom is unmatchable and still boasts of rich tradition and glorious past of our country. Even though the original Indian handloom cannot compete with the poly-mixed products that are way cheaper, the timelessness of handloom will always carry the hard work and skills of Indian craftsman from the past. Conclusion It is all right to say that the popularity of Indian handloom is only vanishing since the time we earned independence. The beautiful handloom deserves a place in the present as much as it did in the past. So, let’s work our bit to bring the true Indian attire back into business.
