- Anger and it’s ill effects
Anger and it’s ill effects by Aparajita Jaiswal Anger and it’s ill effects 1 June 2021 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Anger, Setting You and Your Health at War. An insight into the effects of poorly managed anger upon mental and physical health. Anger, warmth, rage, aggression, something every human is acquainted with. People usually have many tales to narrate, either about themselves or about situations that went worse in a fit of anger. Anger is one of the emotions among the ocean of emotions that every human being deals with every single day. The personality of a person depends upon how he responds to his emotions, the way in which anger is managed to play a major part role. Like everything else in the world, anger has both the positives and the negatives, YET THE ILL EFFECTS OF ANGER ARE MORE EVIDENTLY KNOWN AND SEEN. If you are someone prone to losing temper, here’s why you need to stay calm. Anger, to a limited extent, is good and proves to be beneficial. It helps people think rationally and is a source of motivation for some of the people out there. The general fact is, anger can be good for you if addressed quickly and expressed in a healthy way. In reality, more often than not, anger proves to be hazardous and the ill effects of anger weigh a lot more than its positive effects. Anger does not just affect you but adversely affects the people around you as well. The unhealthy episodes of anger, when held for considerably longer periods, usually ends up as an explosion in rage and can wreak havoc on your body. Anger is a powerful emotion and thus has destructive effects when not handled appropriately. The underlying cause of such havoc lies in the fact that anger triggers the body’s “fight or flight” hormone, i.e., adrenal glands flood the blood with stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. The brain consequently shunts blood away from the gut and towards the muscles as preparation for physical exertion. Thus, the heart rate, blood pressure and respiration increase. Skin perspires and body temperature also increases. This creates an image of a person in a fit of rage. An angry person is so rightly animated in cartoons or comics as someone who is grinding teeth, tightening arms with closed fists and fire used symbolizes the rise of temperature within and around the individual. The constant flow of stress hormones and the metabolic changes associated with seven major health issues that arise out of uncontrolled anger that one needs to know: Frequent outbursts put your heart at great risk: In words of Chris Aiken, MD, an instructor in clinical psychiatry at the wake Forest University School of Medicine and director of the Mood Treatment Center in Winston Salem, “In the two hours after an angry outburst, the chance of having a heart attack doubles.” “Repressed anger – where you express it indirectly or go to great lengths to control it, is associated with heart disease” Dr Aiken adds. Increases the stroke risk: If you’re prone to outburst, beware. A study suggests that the risk of a stroke from a blood clot to the brain or bleeding within the brain during the two hours after an outburst. Furthermore, the arteries of the brain are prone to six times higher risk of such bleeding. Weakens the immune system: The state of mind undoubtedly has a behavioral impact. If you are mad all the time, there is an obvious chance that you feel sick always. A fit of anger causes a dip in levels of the antibodies. Anxiety: Anxiety and anger go hand in hand. In a study carried out in 2021, researchers found that anger can exacerbate symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder characterized by an excessive and uncontrolled worry affecting an individual’s daily life. Depression: Anger in its elevated state, becomes a cause of self-destruction and adversely affects your loved ones as well and such destruction obviously becomes a cause of depression. Numerous studies have linked depression with aggression and angry outbursts. Effects on the lungs: Even if you aren’t a smoker, you can still hurt your lungs if you’re perpetually angry and a hostile person. Anger can shorten your life span: Scary, isn’t it? The fact that happy people live longer is really true. With anger, comes stress and stress is in every way harmful. The key to save yourself from such huge havoc and safeguard your health is to learn to appropriately express anger. The key to begin is to try and start calming yourself down. In case you find a difficult to deal with negative emotions or expressing anger, therapy and counseling will always help. Assertive communication, effective problem solving, using humor, or restricting your thoughts to get away from that black-and-white, all-or-nothing thinking are good ways to get over anger. Getting yourself involved in the activities that interest you so much and make you happy proves to be an effective measure as well. Behind The Lens: Heli Ved's Secrets To Creating Content That Resonates With The Masses by Akshra Khandelwal Behind The Lens: Heli Ved's Secrets To Creating Content That Resonates With The Masses 27 August 2023 LIFESTYLE Advertisement In digital content creation, few names shine as brightly as Heli Ved's. With a thriving YouTube channel and a dedicated following on social media, Heli has captured the hearts of her viewers through her niche content in fashion and beauty. In an exclusive interview for our magazine, Heli reveals the secrets behind her success, her evolution as a content creator, and her dreams for the future. "How are you, and how is everything going on in your life?" we inquired. Heli enthusiastically responds, "I'm doing great, thanks for asking! I'm creating new content every day and ensuring my audience has something unique to experience daily. I'm also focusing on creating niche content in fashion and beauty. I'm excited about my progress, and I can't wait to see what the future holds." Heli's journey on YouTube has been remarkable, and we wonder what sets her content apart and resonates so well with her audience. She replies thoughtfully, "As you know, content is king in today's digital world, and building connections with my audience is paramount to me. Several factors contribute to successful content, including relevance, authenticity, consistency, and adaptation to the platform. Ultimately, creating content that resonates with the audience requires understanding their preferences." From her early days as a content creator to where she is now, Heli's approach to creating videos and engaging with her audience has evolved significantly. "Staying relevant and adapting to trends has become crucial as online platforms and audience preferences evolve," she explains. "Overall, the evolution of content creation has been influenced by technological advancements, shifts in audience behavior, and a deep understanding of the need to connect with viewers on a more personal level." Having amassed a large and dedicated following, we are curious how Heli stays connected with her audience despite the growing numbers. She reveals her strategy, "Interacting with the audience on social media platforms allows us as creators to respond to comments, questions, and feedback, fostering a sense of community. Tailoring content to address specific interests and preferences of different audience segments can enhance engagement. Recognizing and celebrating milestones (e.g., subscriber count) makes the audience feel appreciated and included in the journey." We lighten the mood with a fun question, asking Heli, "If you could be one animal, mythical or existent, what would you be?" She smiles and replies, "I'd be a Phoenix! Bold and elegant, loyal to loved ones and possessing immense courage." As we delve deeper into Heli's career, we ask her to share a highlight from her journey. She fondly recalls, "Hosting the IIFA Red carpet is definitely one of the highlights. I started content creation with the sheer love of building a community, and when that took me places, it felt surreal. My love for extempore as a kid and picking a Speech and Drama class as the extracurricular activity, all made sense at that moment." We are intrigued to know who Heli's dream collaboration would be with and why. She shares her heartfelt dream, "My dream collab is to meet Zoë Sugg and film a classic Haul or makeup routine video with her because she inspired me to start my channel. At a time when I was transitioning from school to college when a lot of things felt overwhelming, her videos helped me immensely. She truly was like an elder sister to me in that phase, and that's what I wanted to emulate." Wrapping up the interview, we seek some advice from Heli for aspiring content creators. "What advice do you have for someone who wants to start creating content on Instagram?" She enthusiastically responds, "Decide on a specific niche or theme for your content. Focusing on a topic you are passionate about will help you attract a targeted audience. Develop a consistent visual style and branding for your posts. Use similar filters, colors, and fonts to create a cohesive and recognizable aesthetic. Lastly, consistency is key to growing your presence on Instagram. Stick to your content schedule and stay dedicated to producing quality content regularly. Enjoy the process, be creative, and have fun sharing your passion with the world!" Heli Ved's journey from a passionate content creator to an influential figure in fashion and beauty is nothing short of inspiring. Her dedication to building connections with her audience, authenticity, and ability to adapt to evolving trends have been key to her success. - Sandeepa Dhar: On Being Versatile and Learning from Mistakes
Sandeepa Dhar: On Being Versatile and Learning from Mistakes by JoNa Sandeepa Dhar: On Being Versatile and Learning from Mistakes 11 December 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Sandeepa Dhar from Kashmir made her debut into Bollywood with the movie Isi Life Mein in 2010, from then it has been an upward journey for her. She has starred in multiple hit movies and critically acclaimed web series such as Abhay and Mai: A Mother’s Rage. Dhar has been nominated for the Filmfare Best Debut Actress, Star Screen Award for Most Promising Newcomer – female and the Stardust Award for Superstar of Tomorrow – Female. She opens up to us about the challenges she faced in the industry, her learning experiences in the shooting spots, her co-stars and her philosophy when it comes to life and work. The Pandemic has taught her not to plan things far ahead, she’s more conscious of the changes in the Bollywood industry and is ready to take one step at a time. She’s not in a hurry to the top. It is the process that appeals to her. “ Personal growth as an actor and as an individual is the most important for me. I think that's where I see myself going, I see myself evolving, changing, getting better and better with time.” Sandeepa Dhar is working on a new project, meanwhile she spoke to us about working on the sets of Kaagaz with the legendary actors Salman Khan, Pankaj Tripathi and Director Satish Kaushik. She shares a special relationship with Salman Khan, as she had already worked with him; and Tripathi according to her, is ‘an amazing and smashing human being.’ She quoted an incident where Kaushik came to her with a song and told her that it was about women empowerment, and that he would never shoot an item song or show women in a poor light. ‘It was reassuring and refreshing to see him talk like that,’ she said. “It was a wonderful experience working on Kaagaz, I'm extremely lucky that I get to work with such an amazing set of creative minds who've been in the industry for a really long time, who are so experienced, and at the top of the game. Ihope I get to work with them over and over again. Fingers crossed.” When asked about her experience so far in Bollywood, Dhar said that it is like a rollercoaster ride, having it’s ups and downs. She is extremely grateful to have worked in diverse roles, with multiple stars and franchises like Netflix and Hotstar. She is also ready to fight for and hope for more bigger, stronger roles and recognition. Looking forward to many more exciting opportunities, Dhar remains optimistic. “ …I feel like I'm also very grateful, because I have got an opportunity to work with some amazing set of people from Salman to Sajid Nadiadwala to Tiger to Kriti and Rajshri. Even with the web, I have gotten the opportunity to work with some brilliantly talented people; platforms from Netflix to Hotstar, the best in the game. I think it's been an interesting journey and I'm only very excited to see where it goes henceforth. Because I don't know myself where it leads me to, I don’t know how much I'm going to grow and evolve. No matter what, I'm really, really looking forward to the opportunities that I get henceforth and to the choices that I make ahead.” Working with Atul Mongia for the web series Mai has been a dream come true for Sandeepa Dhar. The series was produced by Clean Slate Filmz owned by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma. It was a critical and commercial success, and it impacted her personally and professionally as well says Dhar. She goes on to talk about her views on personal development and how she focuses on being a better person and artist, never comparing herself to anyone but herself. She strongly believe in personal growth, and looks forward to being a better version of her self both on and off screen. ‘People who compare their lives to others’ are quite narrow minded, as everyone’s journey is different,’ she adds. “. I feel like anyway, with the kind of lifestyles that we all have, we all need to look inward and work on our own selves, that's the only way that we can keep a straight head in this crazy world. Because, social media and people can play with your head and I think at this point, the only thing that can save you is your own self and knowing who you are and working on it. I think for me that is what is the most important.” For a final question, we asked her about the obstacles she has faced and her journey so far. She replied that being an outsider had been her first obstacle; she knew no one in the industry and had to work hard to land roles, to reach the relevant people. Since she had no one to guide her during her earlier days, everything was of ‘trial and error,’ method for her. She had to learn from her mistakes, sometimes she erred three four times, before learning her lesson. She also spoke about the ‘perception’ that people have about actors, which stereotypes them and thereby denying them of certain roles. This fight against people’s perception of her is a constant battle she says. “In this industry, the stereotyping is immense to an extent it’s quite ridiculous in a way because isn't it stupid that as an actor, you're putting people in boxes, according to the way they look. But as an actor, I should mould myself physically and emotionally as per the character. That is my job, right? I'm supposed to play a different character irrespective of what I look like, but the industry forces you to only play roles, which kind of suffice to what you look like physically. So, if I am, for example, fair and modern and good looking then, according to them, I would only fit in roles wherein the character is rich and from an affluent family or speaks English. I am honestly quite fed up with people thinking like that. I think there is that obstacle that I'm constantly fighting hence, if you look at my filmography, I'm always playing roles wherein the character is quite the opposite of what I am in person.” We ended the interview with a positive vibe, with Sandeepa Dhar asking the audience and readers to look forward to her movies and series, not because she is in them but because they’re worth watching. We are indeed looking forward to your next project Sandeepa Dhar! Wishing you all luck and success! - Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston
by Priti Sharma by Priti Sharma Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston 18 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement The Southeast Asian city of Angkor, famous for the Angkor Wat temple, had between 700,000 and 900,000 residents in the 13th century. With this number, Angkor becomes one of the biggest cities before the modern era. It's also comparable in size to many modern cities; Boston, for example, had around 693,000 residents in 2019. The city’s remains, currently in northwest Cambodia, are well-known for their stone temples, structures, and infrastructure. With the use of scanning technology, archaeologists could spot the remains of buildings made of wood and less resilient materials outside Angkor's "downtown" region. They have vanished without a trace since the majority of their structures were built of wood, thatch, and bamboo. The remnants of Yasodharapura's walls, reservoirs, roadways, and, most importantly, its religious structures—which were constructed of stone and laterite to worship the Buddha or a pantheon of Indian gods—are how we learned about this city that was abandoned in the sixteenth century. When Angkor Wat was first constructed, Suryavarman II was a strong ruler who used it as both a mausoleum and a monument. Over a square mile is devoted to the Vishnu shrine. The Ramayana, an Indian epic, as well as incidents from Suryavarman's life are shown in the base relief's exquisite carving. They also display the god of the underworld, Yama, sending people to heaven or to hell. A sophisticated culture, "Angkor" had its rulers at the top of the social hierarchy. The majority of those who constructed the temples and produced sustenance for the aristocracy were rice farmers, and they employed methods that have largely remained unchanged to the current day. The Khmer people were skilled carpenters and gifted stone and wood carvers. Impressive reservoirs and razor-sharp roadways connecting Cambodian cities were built by Khmer engineers, and many of the temples still bear intricate inscriptions that were written by Khmer poets. Warriors from Cambodia assaulted nearby kingdoms and guarded Yasodharapura against invasion. Many of these "ordinary" contributions are overlooked when we visit the temples or see the ethereal traditional dance of Cambodia. After Jayavarman's demise, Yasodharapura continued to be a magnificent and rich city for at least two hundred years. Following a Thai army assault in 1431, it was mostly abandoned. Soon after, the center of government in Cambodia moved to the south. A Cambodian monarch visited the old city in the 1500s, repaired a few temples, and presumably spent some time living in Yasodharapura. Angkor Wat was often visited by pilgrims, and a Buddhist monastery stood next to the temple for many years. However, Yasodharapura was abandoned by the outside world, and the jungle gradually took it over. The amazingly creative and engineering prowess that the ruins show makes up for its "heritage." In addition to the open-minded, resourceful, and tough people who struggle to make ends meet in their impoverished, congested country while keeping testimony to their magnificent heritage, these abilities are on display today in Cambodian classical dance. A tropical metropolis, Angkor endured centuries of political and climatic unpredictability. Urban planners may be able to better grasp some of the limitations that an increasing number of the world's cities confront by tracking the phenomenon's development and tipping point. Pasta became an increasingly common sight on restaurant menus all across the globe, but the Italians’ love affair with pasta has a long, complex, and passionate history. While we do think of pasta as a culturally Italian food, it is likely the descendent of ancient Asian noodles, or is it? Let’s find out! Nothing says Italy like its food, and nothing says Italian food like pasta. Pasta is integrant part of Italy’s food history and immaculate culture. Wherever Italians immigrated they have brought their pasta. Pasta happens to be the staple food of traditional Italian cuisine. All kinds of pasta is made of milled wheat and water and sometimes enriched with vitamins and minerals. Italian spaghetti is typically made from durum wheat semolina. Unlike other ubiquitous Italian products like pizza and tomato sauce, which have a fairly recent history, pasta may have a much older pedigree, going back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. While unraveling the long and often complex history of this delicious and finger licking dish, we have to look at its origins and some of the myths surrounding it. Very often we come across the enduring myth, based on the writings of the 13th-century explorer Marco Polo, that pasta was brought to Italy from China, rose from being published in the ‘Macaroni Journal’ by the Association of Food Industries. Some may have also learnt that Polo’s was not a discovery, but rather a rediscovery of a product once popular in Italy among the Etruscans and the Romans, a common misconception that Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy whereas in truth, the dish had already existed in Europe for centuries but there’s little doubt he made Westerners aware of many Chinese inventions. Italian pasta enthusiasts organized a World Pasta Conference in 1995, they celebrate Word Pasta Day every year in October, since 1998. There is also an Italian Pasta Association and a Pasta Museum in Rome. History of pasta: drying pasta toward the beginning of the 1900 There is indeed evidence of an Etrusco-Roman noodle, called lagane, made from the same durum wheat used to produce modern pasta. Lagane is where the modern word lasagna originated from. However this type of food, first mentioned in the 1st century AD, was not boiled, as it is usually done today, but oven baked. Ancient lagane had some similarities with modern pasta, but cannot be considered quite the same. The country will have to wait a few centuries for its most popular dish to make a further culinary leap forward. Like so much of southern Italian life, the Arabic invasions of the 8th century heavily influenced regional cuisine. Today, the presence of Arabic people in the south of the peninsula during the Middle Ages is considered the most likely reason behind the diffusion of pasta. Early pasta making was often a laborious, day-long process. How these early dishes were served is not truly known, but many Sicilian pasta recipes still include typically Middle Eastern ingredients, such as raisins and cinnamon, which may be witness to original, medieval recipes. This early pasta was an ideal staple for Sicily and it easily spread to the mainland since durum wheat thrives in Italy’s climate. Italy is still a major producer of this hard wheat, used to make the all-important semolina flour. By the 1300’s dried pasta was very popular for its nutrition and long shelf life, making it ideal for long ship voyages. Pasta made it around the globe during the voyages of discovery a century later. By that time different shapes of pasta have appeared and new technology made pasta easier to make. With these innovations pasta truly became a part of Italian life. However the next big advancement in the history of pasta would not come until the 19th century when pasta met tomatoes. Although tomatoes were brought back to Europe shortly after their discovery in the New World, it took a long time for the plant to be considered edible. In fact tomatoes are a member of the nightshade family and rumors of tomatoes being poisonous continued in parts of Europe and its colonies until the mid 19th century (check the history of tomato here). Therefore it was not until 1839 that the first pasta recipe with tomatoes was documented. However shortly, thereafter, tomatoes took hold, especially in the south of Italy. The rest of course is delicious history. Pasta was considered a dish for the wealthy, taking pride of place in aristocratic banquets during the Renaissance. Pasta in America Early Spanish settlers were among the first to bring pasta to America. Believe it or not, it was Thomas Jefferson that helped give pasta an initial push into popularity. During an extended stay in Paris from 1784-1789, Jefferson ate what he called macaroni back then, the word could have referred to any shape of pasta. He enjoyed the dish so much that he returned to America with two cases in tow. When his supply ran out, he sent for reinforcements via a friend from Naples. The first industrial pasta factory in the US was built in Brooklyn in 1848 by a Frenchman. Pasta Today Pasta was originally solely a part of Italian and European cuisine. With an increase in popularity on a worldwide scale, pasta has crossed international borders and is now a popular form of fast food and a staple in North America and elsewhere. This is due to the great amount of Italian immigration into Canada and the United States around the beginning of the 20th century. Similarly, the immense immigration of Italians into South Africa ensured that spaghetti with meatballs became an essential part of South African cuisine. The art of pasta making and the devotion to the food as a whole has evolved since pasta was first conceptualized. Several things that have changed drastically over time are the flavorings added to pasta. Sweetness has been replaced by savory, sugar swapped out for vegetables, which helped make pasta a nutritionally complete dish. Pasta is so beloved in Italy that individual consumption exceeds the average production of wheat of the country; thus Italy frequently imports wheat for pasta making. In contemporary society pasta is ubiquitous and individuals can find a variety of types in local supermarkets. With the worldwide demand for this staple food, pasta is now largely mass-produced in factories and only a tiny proportion is crafted by hand. - Wandering into the room of Virginia Woolf
SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Wandering into the room of Virginia Woolf 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Reckoned as a feminist icon and literary genius, Adeline Virginia Woolf is best known for her novel “ Mrs Dalloway”, “To the lighthouse” and essay “ A Room of one’s own”. She was born in an affluent family with literary inclinations shaping her childhood and proclivity for reading and writing. Woolf began to write professionally in 1900 encouraged by her father Leslie Stephen. Her writing style is almost poetic, stream of consciousness of characters binding together the narrative. Like so many writers and artists she wasn’t famous during her lifetime and even several decades after her death. Her popularity rose to newer heights during the 1970s feminist criticism movement. She was a part of Bloomsbury group- a group of English writers, artists and philosophers in the early 20th century which was the hub of art, affairs and intellectual discussions. As Dorothy Parker quipped, “They painted in circles, lived in squares, and loved in triangles”. Viriginia Woolf is also known for her old school romance with her husband decorated with love letters and cute pet names, they called each Mandrill and Mongoose. Virginia was a champion of women equality and independence during her time and lived a life which was unconventional and revolutionary in a sense. One of her most famous longer essays “ A Room of One’s Own” was derived from two lectures she gave at Cambridge University. She talks about “ A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”. She famously gave an analogy of Shakespeare’s sister who, equipped with the same genius could not be equally famous given the position of her gender. Virginia also talked about Bronte sisters, George Eliot and other women writers who wrote under pen names because that was the only way to move forward in the hallways of the literary world. Yet beneath this shy yet social beautiful writer is a sad woman who was sexually abused as a child and battled mental illness throughout her life. She had a mental breakdown on the death of her mother in 1895. It was the first of many more to come. Institutionalized many times, she attempted suicide and finally one morning in 1941, she filled her pocket with stones and drowned in a nearby river. Leaving behind a legacy of novels, diaries and letters, her life remains an enigma, much like her death. But Virginia, through her sad rebellion and constant musings, fills us with hope. Hope in the strength of good ideas to come forward, irrespective of gender and social circumstances and for us to be forbearers of a future more equitable than the past.
