  • Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston

by Priti Sharma by Priti Sharma Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston 18 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement The Southeast Asian city of Angkor, famous for the Angkor Wat temple, had between 700,000 and 900,000 residents in the 13th century. With this number, Angkor becomes one of the biggest cities before the modern era. It's also comparable in size to many modern cities; Boston, for example, had around 693,000 residents in 2019. The city’s remains, currently in northwest Cambodia, are well-known for their stone temples, structures, and infrastructure. With the use of scanning technology, archaeologists could spot the remains of buildings made of wood and less resilient materials outside Angkor's "downtown" region. They have vanished without a trace since the majority of their structures were built of wood, thatch, and bamboo. The remnants of Yasodharapura's walls, reservoirs, roadways, and, most importantly, its religious structures—which were constructed of stone and laterite to worship the Buddha or a pantheon of Indian gods—are how we learned about this city that was abandoned in the sixteenth century. When Angkor Wat was first constructed, Suryavarman II was a strong ruler who used it as both a mausoleum and a monument. Over a square mile is devoted to the Vishnu shrine. The Ramayana, an Indian epic, as well as incidents from Suryavarman's life are shown in the base relief's exquisite carving. They also display the god of the underworld, Yama, sending people to heaven or to hell. A sophisticated culture, "Angkor" had its rulers at the top of the social hierarchy. The majority of those who constructed the temples and produced sustenance for the aristocracy were rice farmers, and they employed methods that have largely remained unchanged to the current day. The Khmer people were skilled carpenters and gifted stone and wood carvers. Impressive reservoirs and razor-sharp roadways connecting Cambodian cities were built by Khmer engineers, and many of the temples still bear intricate inscriptions that were written by Khmer poets. Warriors from Cambodia assaulted nearby kingdoms and guarded Yasodharapura against invasion. Many of these "ordinary" contributions are overlooked when we visit the temples or see the ethereal traditional dance of Cambodia. After Jayavarman's demise, Yasodharapura continued to be a magnificent and rich city for at least two hundred years. Following a Thai army assault in 1431, it was mostly abandoned. Soon after, the center of government in Cambodia moved to the south. A Cambodian monarch visited the old city in the 1500s, repaired a few temples, and presumably spent some time living in Yasodharapura. Angkor Wat was often visited by pilgrims, and a Buddhist monastery stood next to the temple for many years. However, Yasodharapura was abandoned by the outside world, and the jungle gradually took it over. The amazingly creative and engineering prowess that the ruins show makes up for its "heritage." In addition to the open-minded, resourceful, and tough people who struggle to make ends meet in their impoverished, congested country while keeping testimony to their magnificent heritage, these abilities are on display today in Cambodian classical dance. A tropical metropolis, Angkor endured centuries of political and climatic unpredictability. Urban planners may be able to better grasp some of the limitations that an increasing number of the world's cities confront by tracking the phenomenon's development and tipping point. • Origin of Pasta: The Ambiguous Kitchen History

by Aparajita Jaiswal Origin of Pasta: The Ambiguous Kitchen History 7 July 2022 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement One of the many wonders of the world happens to be the origin of pasta. Pasta became an increasingly common sight on restaurant menus all across the globe, but the Italians’ love affair with pasta has a long, complex, and passionate history. While we do think of pasta as a culturally Italian food, it is likely the descendent of ancient Asian noodles, or is it? Let’s find out! Nothing says Italy like its food, and nothing says Italian food like pasta. Pasta is integrant part of Italy’s food history and immaculate culture. Wherever Italians immigrated they have brought their pasta. Pasta happens to be the staple food of traditional Italian cuisine. All kinds of pasta is made of milled wheat and water and sometimes enriched with vitamins and minerals. Italian spaghetti is typically made from durum wheat semolina. Unlike other ubiquitous Italian products like pizza and tomato sauce, which have a fairly recent history, pasta may have a much older pedigree, going back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. While unraveling the long and often complex history of this delicious and finger licking dish, we have to look at its origins and some of the myths surrounding it. Very often we come across the enduring myth, based on the writings of the 13th-century explorer Marco Polo, that pasta was brought to Italy from China, rose from being published in the ‘Macaroni Journal’ by the Association of Food Industries. Some may have also learnt that Polo’s was not a discovery, but rather a rediscovery of a product once popular in Italy among the Etruscans and the Romans, a common misconception that Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy whereas in truth, the dish had already existed in Europe for centuries but there’s little doubt he made Westerners aware of many Chinese inventions. Italian pasta enthusiasts organized a World Pasta Conference in 1995, they celebrate Word Pasta Day every year in October, since 1998. There is also an Italian Pasta Association and a Pasta Museum in Rome. History of pasta: drying pasta toward the beginning of the 1900 There is indeed evidence of an Etrusco-Roman noodle, called lagane, made from the same durum wheat used to produce modern pasta. Lagane is where the modern word lasagna originated from. However this type of food, first mentioned in the 1st century AD, was not boiled, as it is usually done today, but oven baked. Ancient lagane had some similarities with modern pasta, but cannot be considered quite the same. The country will have to wait a few centuries for its most popular dish to make a further culinary leap forward. Like so much of southern Italian life, the Arabic invasions of the 8th century heavily influenced regional cuisine. Today, the presence of Arabic people in the south of the peninsula during the Middle Ages is considered the most likely reason behind the diffusion of pasta. Early pasta making was often a laborious, day-long process. How these early dishes were served is not truly known, but many Sicilian pasta recipes still include typically Middle Eastern ingredients, such as raisins and cinnamon, which may be witness to original, medieval recipes. This early pasta was an ideal staple for Sicily and it easily spread to the mainland since durum wheat thrives in Italy’s climate. Italy is still a major producer of this hard wheat, used to make the all-important semolina flour. By the 1300’s dried pasta was very popular for its nutrition and long shelf life, making it ideal for long ship voyages. Pasta made it around the globe during the voyages of discovery a century later. By that time different shapes of pasta have appeared and new technology made pasta easier to make. With these innovations pasta truly became a part of Italian life. However the next big advancement in the history of pasta would not come until the 19th century when pasta met tomatoes. Although tomatoes were brought back to Europe shortly after their discovery in the New World, it took a long time for the plant to be considered edible. In fact tomatoes are a member of the nightshade family and rumors of tomatoes being poisonous continued in parts of Europe and its colonies until the mid 19th century (check the history of tomato here). Therefore it was not until 1839 that the first pasta recipe with tomatoes was documented. However shortly, thereafter, tomatoes took hold, especially in the south of Italy. The rest of course is delicious history. Pasta was considered a dish for the wealthy, taking pride of place in aristocratic banquets during the Renaissance. Pasta in America Early Spanish settlers were among the first to bring pasta to America. Believe it or not, it was Thomas Jefferson that helped give pasta an initial push into popularity. During an extended stay in Paris from 1784-1789, Jefferson ate what he called macaroni… back then, the word could have referred to any shape of pasta. He enjoyed the dish so much that he returned to America with two cases in tow. When his supply ran out, he sent for reinforcements via a friend from Naples. The first industrial pasta factory in the US was built in Brooklyn in 1848 by a Frenchman. Pasta Today Pasta was originally solely a part of Italian and European cuisine. With an increase in popularity on a worldwide scale, pasta has crossed international borders and is now a popular form of fast food and a staple in North America and elsewhere. This is due to the great amount of Italian immigration into Canada and the United States around the beginning of the 20th century. Similarly, the immense immigration of Italians into South Africa ensured that spaghetti with meatballs became an essential part of South African cuisine. The art of pasta making and the devotion to the food as a whole has evolved since pasta was first conceptualized. Several things that have changed drastically over time are the flavorings added to pasta. Sweetness has been replaced by savory, sugar swapped out for vegetables, which helped make pasta a nutritionally complete dish. Pasta is so beloved in Italy that individual consumption exceeds the average production of wheat of the country; thus Italy frequently imports wheat for pasta making. In contemporary society pasta is ubiquitous and individuals can find a variety of types in local supermarkets. With the worldwide demand for this staple food, pasta is now largely mass-produced in factories and only a tiny proportion is crafted by hand. • Wandering into the room of Virginia Woolf

SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Wandering into the room of Virginia Woolf 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Reckoned as a feminist icon and literary genius, Adeline Virginia Woolf is best known for her novel “ Mrs Dalloway”, “To the lighthouse” and essay “ A Room of one’s own”. She was born in an affluent family with literary inclinations shaping her childhood and proclivity for reading and writing. Woolf began to write professionally in 1900 encouraged by her father Leslie Stephen. Her writing style is almost poetic, stream of consciousness of characters binding together the narrative. Like so many writers and artists she wasn’t famous during her lifetime and even several decades after her death. Her popularity rose to newer heights during the 1970s feminist criticism movement. She was a part of Bloomsbury group- a group of English writers, artists and philosophers in the early 20th century which was the hub of art, affairs and intellectual discussions. As Dorothy Parker quipped, “They painted in circles, lived in squares, and loved in triangles”. Viriginia Woolf is also known for her old school romance with her husband decorated with love letters and cute pet names, they called each Mandrill and Mongoose. Virginia was a champion of women equality and independence during her time and lived a life which was unconventional and revolutionary in a sense. One of her most famous longer essays “ A Room of One’s Own” was derived from two lectures she gave at Cambridge University. She talks about “ A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”. She famously gave an analogy of Shakespeare’s sister who, equipped with the same genius could not be equally famous given the position of her gender. Virginia also talked about Bronte sisters, George Eliot and other women writers who wrote under pen names because that was the only way to move forward in the hallways of the literary world. Yet beneath this shy yet social beautiful writer is a sad woman who was sexually abused as a child and battled mental illness throughout her life. She had a mental breakdown on the death of her mother in 1895. It was the first of many more to come. Institutionalized many times, she attempted suicide and finally one morning in 1941, she filled her pocket with stones and drowned in a nearby river. Leaving behind a legacy of novels, diaries and letters, her life remains an enigma, much like her death. But Virginia, through her sad rebellion and constant musings, fills us with hope. Hope in the strength of good ideas to come forward, irrespective of gender and social circumstances and for us to be forbearers of a future more equitable than the past. • Alexandra Victoria Bonte: From Olympic Dreams To Empowering Women Through Real Estate

Alexandra Victoria Bonte: From Olympic Dreams To Empowering Women Through Real Estate By Sakshi Batra Alexandra Victoria Bonte: From Olympic Dreams To Empowering Women Through Real Estate 7 January 2025 FASHION Advertisement Alexandra Victoria Bonte , a former equestrian champion, turned her competitive spirit into entrepreneurial success at just 23. As co-founder of Bonte Filipidis Real Estate Agency and partner in the Golden Real Estate Investment Fund, she’s redefining luxury living in Portugal, Ibiza, and the French Riviera. Driven by her love for architecture and design, and guided by her motto, “Credere... Lottare... Vincere...” (Believe... Strive... Conquer...), Alexandra’s journey is a testament to passion and perseverance. From Olympic dreams to building a real estate empire, her story is one of resilience, empowerment, and visionary leadership. From Athlete To Entrepreneur To Influencer "My journey has been a rollercoaster of ambition and reinvention “she mentioned. “As an athlete training for the Olympics, I experienced the heartbreak of shattered dreams”. That moment pushed her to pivot and channel her energy into business. Real estate had caught her attention as a niche waiting to be tapped, prices were low, and she saw an upcoming boom driven by global experts. As her business grew, so did her passion for fashion. She adores the artistry of cities like Paris, Milan, London, and Los Angeles, where architecture and trends collide beautifully. “Dressing well is an extension of who you are - it’s a statement of confidence, much like her real estate agency, which celebrates strong, trendsetting women” she says. Championing Women Empowerment Empowering women is the cornerstone of her philosophy. Having grown up in Portugal, where she witnessed cultural chauvinism firsthand, lower salaries and fewer opportunities for women there she decided to challenge the narrative by building a team that primarily employs women, showing that women are just as capable as men. It was never about being a feminist for her but about achieving equality in the workforce. Unfortunately, “Gender disparities still exist in Portugal and beyond” she exclaimed. Rising Above The Challenges Talking about the challenges she mentioned that COVID-19 was a significant test for her. “While the real estate agency was gaining momentum, the pandemic hit, halting everything - marketing, property showings, even day-to-day operations. Our business collapsed, like many others”. But she believed “Adversity breeds creativity”. During that downtime, she leaned into social media, creating content that blended properties with a lifestyle narrative. It was a game-changer for her which not only helped her stay connected with clients but also redefined how they presented their brand. That period taught her the power of adaptability. Fashion That Defines Alexandra Bonte’s Style "I love mixing vintage pieces with modern trends—blazers are my ultimate staple”. Chanel’s timeless elegance is her favorite, and she admires the classic French style as much as the all-American Ralph Lauren look. She gravitates towards prêt-à-porter pieces that flatters her figure without being too revealing—classic yet understated. When it comes to colors, she doesn’t have strict preferences; she simply chooses the shades that complement her complexion and hair at that moment. “My style isn’t just about following trends but about incorporating timeless vintage elements into my wardrobe” she says. Her wardrobe focuses on quality over quantity – The pieces that endures time and trends. Inside Alexandra Bonte’s Signature Instagram Style Secrets "Well, I can’t reveal all my secrets! • Ramandeep Kaur, Charmingly Dauntless

Ramandeep Kaur, Charmingly Dauntless by Aparajita Jaiswal Ramandeep Kaur, Charmingly Dauntless 23 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement It is always natural to feel extremely proud of the new self created out of the previous portions of ourselves! One such person with extreme sense of pride stands to be Ramandeep Kaur! Being a part of the Punjabi industry makes you extremely filled with energy in spite of the obstacles. Speaking of which, the gracious actor talks about her journey, mentioning, "I began as a manager in a salon and opportunities were presented naturally, quite willingly by others and situations supported those opportunities and I was fortunate enough to take advantage. It has been a passion of mine, all my life." Talking of obstacles, one doesn’t always get what she/he wants. "I prefer to perceive rejections as challenges, motivating me to do better," the actress says, gracefully. The very thought of making it huge in spite of rejections, hypes one up. In a creative field such as acting, it is a regular roller coaster where every artist goes through rejections and fame. The journey of fame deals with the public eye and staying grounded is very important. Ramandeep comments when asked how she deals with fame, "I stay humble." The very essence of the Punjabi film industry and the anticipation of where it is leading excites the audience. "I feel the Punjabi industry is on the way up, it is getting more worldwide exposure and I am excited to be a part of it," says the actress. Speaking of the industry, the reader often gets mesmerised by what they observe on social media. When asked about the trends that she rejoices in, her confidence peaked as she exclaimed, "I am the trend on social media." Ramandeep Kaur expresses her inspiration to be the humble blockbuster star, Diljit Dosanjh. While getting inspired in all ways, Ramandeep comments on her love for fashion. "I love fashion and I follow all trends to ensure I am always on top of it." Fashion brings in a lot of stereotypes attached to it as interpreted by society, majorly associated with body shaming and fitness. However, being an actress it's perceived differently, "I understand that the world is becoming diverse and is allowing people of all shapes and sizes to share the spotlight. However, I myself attend the gym regularly to maintain my figure." To stay on top, in both, one's professional and personal life, is a big deal. Thus to mark the lines between reel and real life for an actor is even more tough! "I stay in character on set and on only on set, I never take my character home with me. My personal life is a completely separate entity from my work." This actually is difficult to fathom for the readers as the work she engages in all seem so perfectly put, however, that is what would also make a rising beauty, like her, such a great actress! "My work does not affect my personal life as I try to be professional to all extents, taking my personal life seriously and looking after it as closely as I do for my career." As the audience looks forward to her engaging them in more of her films, it is also interesting to have a glance at her perspective. The career of every actor brings her to different roles and it is quite obvious to be biased to one or having regrets in having played a certain character. However, for Ramandeep, there are no regrets in the roles she has enacted. "I am proud of all the characters I have had the opportunity to play." My work does not affect my personal life as I am a professional and take my career very seriously! • These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health

These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health By Anushka Sharma These Fashion Trends Are Literally Scary For Your Health 1 April 2024 FASHION Advertisement Fashion is like a thrilling roller coaster ride, isn't it? It's full of twists, turns, and unexpected surprises. However, did you know that some of those surprises lurking in your closet might not be so fun after all? Buckle up, because we're about to uncover the hidden dangers of fast fashion and trendy accessories. Fast fashion is like the speedy Gonzales of the clothing world. It churns out cheap clothes faster than you can say "fashion emergency." But here's the catch: those super affordable threads often come with a not-so-pleasant side effect. They're loaded with chemicals that can irritate your skin and even cause health issues. Think of it like wearing a toxic soup – definitely not a good look! Now, let's talk about everyone's favorite footwear: sneakers. They're comfy, stylish, and practically a fashion staple these days. But did you know that wearing sneakers too much can mess with your feet? Yep, it's true! They can throw off your posture and even lead to painful foot problems. So, while you're busy rocking those kicks, your poor feet might be silently screaming for a break. And then there are waist trainers – those trendy contraptions designed to give you that coveted hourglass figure. Sounds great, right? Well, not exactly. Sure, they might help you cinch your waist, but they can also wreak havoc on your body. From messing with your appetite to causing serious breathing issues, waist trainers are like the fashion equivalent of a tight squeeze. But let's not forget about the accessories, because they come with their own set of dangers too. Heavy earrings might look glam, but they can actually stretch out your earlobes or even cause them to split. Ouch! And those ill-fitting thongs? They can rub you the wrong way and leave you feeling seriously uncomfortable. So, what's a fashion-forward individual to do in a world full of wardrobe woes? Well, for starters, it's important to be mindful of what you're putting on your body. Opt for clothes made from natural materials whenever possible, and steer clear of anything that feels scratchy or uncomfortable. When it comes to footwear, choose shoes that offer both style and support. And don't forget to give your feet a break every now and then – they deserve it! As for accessories, go easy on the heavy earrings and make sure your thongs fit just right. And most importantly, listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it. Fashion should be fun and fabulous, not hazardous to your health. So, the next time you're getting dressed, remember to put safety first. After all, there's nothing more stylish than taking care of yourself!
