Kavya played the role of Sheetal Jain in the film, who is the daughter of a rich businessperson. Carrying this assumption, we asked how she would describe her experience of working both in the South and in Bollywood. Her response met our expectations, when she said “Both the industries have a lot to offer and it’s been a very exciting and overwhelming experience for me. I’ve always been blessed to find amazing opportunities in both the industries and I’ve found some people who are extremely dear to me and are now family. Overall my experience has been nothing short of a blessing and I thank god and my Guruji every day for my journey.’ Her gratefulness for her success was indeed heart-warming. Kavya’s filmography spans across a wide variety of films by now, with distinct plots, genres, roles and of course, languages. Therefore, we had to ask her, which of her works was the closest to her heart. Interestingly, her reply was that she simply could not decide. “I don’t think I can be biased when it comes to my work. Every project I take up I believe in 100% and it’s like my baby.” We then asked her what her advice was for the numerous young women who are trying to get into her industry. The simplicity and authenticity of her advice impressed us, as she advised young aspirants to simply be themselves. She also emphasized hard-work and honesty, along with the right amount of faith and grace. “Don’t find easy ways and solutions. Be patient and keep going with a smile and a prayer.” she said. Kavya was also asked by us about any “fashion mantra” she followed, and would like to share. Her reply was quite amusing, while still being incredibly genuine and profound- a delicate combination indeed. “For me fashion is what my stylists suggest honestly. Otherwise personally I only seek maximum comfort. I believe clothes are made to fit us and we aren’t supposed to fit into clothes. Also size doesn’t matter so wear what you want when you want and how you want just be happy and comfortable. ” Finally, she told us about her upcoming projects. We discovered that 2023 is going to be quite a busy year for Kavya, as she is working on 3 movies down south (two in Tamil and one in Telugu). Without telling us too much and keeping us on the hook, she also mentioned that she has “something very exciting coming up” in Hindi on Amazon Prime. SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Labels are to be stuck on goods, not on people 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Labels, growing up we’ve heard this word for over a thousand times, put the label on chart honey, the price is on the label sir, and many more diverse examples. The thing that we learned the hard way, was that those labels are also stuck on our bodies, our existence, and our whole selves. And the worst part is that these petty labels are stuck by someone else. Human society has an integral concept of putting labels on things they have no say in, things that they should not bother themselves with yet they do engage in this activity. The intrinsic need to have that much control over everything comes out of habit, out of the need to stay with one another in the early stages of human development. But, as time grew, and our bodies evolved and left these inseparable marks in the construct of societies. These labels are put on us right from the minute we are born, the minute our little bodies leave our mother’s safe womb there awaits the band of labels waiting to be stuck on our bodies. This band of labels prolifers into a herd as we grow up. The primary labels are divided into the binary gender system that society believes to be solely existing in this world. Being any of the two genders, there are expectations that our society has from us. A little girl must learn to be polite, silent, and obedient. A teenage girl must be an expert at cooking, staying away from a sparkling social life, and most importantly should be homebound. A woman on the other hand must be fostering every person in her family and should prioritize everyone above her. When they fail to perform even one of these expectations they are suddenly labeled as ungrateful, selfish, and self-centered. Little boys are taught that they should not cry, for crying is the virtue of a girl. Teenage boys are conditioned to choose a career path that could land them tons of money. A man on the other hand should be robust, they should be quick to change a tire at the roadside, they should take care of every financial need whatsoever. Similarly, when they fail to uphold these virtues that society has their tags to hook on you, labels to stick to your existence, and judgments to lay off. Men are called feminine, irresponsible, and a lot of other slangs challenging their manhood if they go against the architecture of societal emotions. The question arises in curious minds that why do these labels exist, why they have been nurtured over centuries, why these things were not removed when we got educated enough? The problem is when we evolved from our biological needs into functioning independent adults, there was always a trace of knowledge that was missing in our minds. All of these attributes that we were subjected to, once used to serve humans as their boat in this sea of life. The glitch is that they didn’t know we could swim through this ocean with our very own hands and legs. That this life is just an act of self-dependence was a very later discovery, until then damage was done. The man had developed an ego, status, and the fact that some people were going against the piece of information they sought was offensive to them. As a result, they started oppression of people they thought could go out of their hands. they specified everyone’s virtues as they pleased and decided labels to ascertain when people don’t obey. Their first target was to suppress women, as they in their sense knew what an epitome of power she is. The one who can create a seed of life can surely rebel against them and show the world the right way. And to stop men from supporting them in any way, they traced a set of tags. Tags so nascent that they will cease the support at once. This seems like a plausible explanation for all these things. Apart from these binary labels, many labels are stuck to our existence in certain specific situations and beliefs. The LGBTQ community is the first slap to their binary understanding. There had and is still prevailing an incessant urge to demolish their community as non-existent, that their orientation is just blurred and that it is against God’s creation that they are living this sinful life. The next is the labels given on the basis of Skin color, the whites are supposed to be the fairer and better race than the darker. Their supremacy has no logical explanation in any terms but these labels still haunt society to this very day. These realms of labels and tags don’t cease, it is present at the vibrance of variants in each specific society. A notion should be held on whether these are required, whether they leave a good impact on one’s mental health, etc. The answers to any of these questions do not go affirmatively. There must be understanding that these labels are downright suicidal to someone, suffocating to others, and mind-numbing to one. We should understand that we are no one to label one person, it’s not a diagram of the nervous system to be labeled but a human being’s mental health that we play along the lines. Nikhita Gandhi construes her journey by Aarti Singh Nikhita Gandhi construes her journey 2 November 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement In an exclusive interview with L’utopia, the “MAHARANI” of Indian pop, Nikhita Gandhi decodes her journey from learning and working with A R Rahman to Naach Meri Rani and then Maharani. Talking about the legend, A R Rahman, Nikhita added how creative he is with developing songs right from scratch. “AR sir is probably the most interesting and vastly talented person I’ve ever met. You can never be bored around him! He is constantly trying new things and learning and adapting and moulding his craft. It’s so inspiring! I’ve sat in on some sessions when he was composing a song from scratch, it was pretty incredible to watch his process. He is unbelievably quick with the DAW and production and it’s a treat to see the magic happen!” It is pretty clear that Nikhita herself is insanely creative when it comes to her songs. Take Maharani for instance. She further explained what this song portrays for her and what was the inspiration behind it. “MAHARANI celebrates women in the most breezy and effortless way. That’s what really resonated for me with this composition. I always wanted to do a song about women that didn’t necessarily have to stand up for women or sound like a “cause” and instead simply uplifts women in a cool casual POP way! That’s probably what I love the most about this record, it’s suave and fun and still can be meaningful.” There’s so much that goes behind every song. Each and every song is unique and has a distinct thought behind it along with a story. Such was the case with Maharani as well. “I was visiting my friends in LA after my India Tour ended in July this year, and of course these friends happen to be pretty epic musicians. I don’t think they need an introduction but Shankar Tucker and Vidya Vox were hosting us and so of course we got into the studio and they played us some of their music. Ironically this was a song that Shankar wanted to play me because they didn’t want to release the track and felt I might connect with it more. It was instant love for me. I told him it’s a great song and that I’d love to finish it! So, when I got back to India, I rewrote the lyrics in Hindi and changed it to mean what being a Queen to me is. And this song was born! The best thing about completing this whole process was the video shoot, because as it turns out Shankar and Vids were in India in September for a show and so I thought it would be perfect to have them cameo in the video while they were in town! The whole thing sort of just fell into place and that’s what I love about the journey of each song.” While talking about the direction of the music industry, Nikhita shared how on-screen representation helps an artist become more known and emerge fully. “I’m excited to see the music industry stand on its feet. Where a singer or composer is famous for his/her work and not an unknown entity in a film where the audience only identifies with the actors in it. I would love to see more of that. I think if Badshah can feature in his song, in a film then it’s only a matter of time that we see more and more artists represent their identity on screen as well! This is where the audience will truly identify with their artist and true fans will emerge!” She previously pointed out how the music scene is in an unsure yet exciting space. Elaborating that she added how we can see a lot of trial and error. “Like I mentioned a little earlier about not knowing what’s working, it definitely puts music investors in a complicated spot but makes the answer really easy for musicians- do what you do best, not what’s working; cause what’s working also may not work for you (lol). That may sound confusing but basically the best formula is no formula and just making music from the heart! Syncing on film artist’s music in films is also happening these days in India like the west which I think is amazing! A lot of credit for that goes to the Punjabi industry who have truly revolutionized certain perceptions of the non-film artist.” Further talking about the potential for musicians to grow in all the industries, Nikhita disclosed how she thinks that there is so much one can do especially now that the independent scene is also getting its own space and followers. “We see a rise in the hip hop scene and singer-songwriter space and honestly the power is with the people. I think anyone who spends a little time understanding how streaming and music distribution works, can figure out their music career and find their voice. I recently visited the inauguration of the new batch of a music school and interacted with the freshers. I was really delighted to see that a lot of them were not simply enamoured by the well sold image of the frontman but had serious aspirations- some wanted to be producers, some sound engineers and so on. I was happy to see that the youth knows what it wants and is intelligent enough to find its path!” Music has definitely gotten a boost due to the onslaught of social media. She pointed out how remarkable it really is. “It’s kind of amazing how in the most algorithmic and calculatable phases of humanity with apps and data, music is still so ineffable. A common phrase I’ve been hearing these days is “kuch bhi chal raha hai” (anything/everything is getting famous) or “we don’t know what works” which means no real formula can be applied to music and what really connects with people. One great thing about social media is that you are directly in touch with the world, a person sitting in Iceland can be a fan of a new artist emerging from a small town in Madhya Pradesh. What really blows my mind though is that not knowing what works- it’s sort of a testament to the fact that music will always be a very personal and wonderous experience and each listener will always interpret the same song differently- that is a timeless truth!” Nikhita feels that not just social media but live shows are also a great way to share creative space with the world, especially her fans and something that she absolutely loves. “What’s there not to love really? Being on stage is so exhilarating! It’s that weirdly gratifying mixture of nervousness and thrill and happiness like being on a rollercoaster, but better! On stage you get to share energies with your audience which I think is a very beautiful experience. It can many times be therapeutic and one of the purest forms of joy! In the India Tour I did early this year, there was a moment when I was singing my original Bura Na Mano Yaara and the audience was singing along, they knew the words that I had written, by creation. It felt so amazing I don’t think I could describe it.” She feels that her roots and values have been something that helped her grow as a person and as an artist. “I’m blessed with the most incredible parents. I don’t think anyone could ask for a better mother and father. Each day I try to be more like them and that’s what takes me forward. They are so hardworking and caring and giving and I think I could go on and on about them, but the truth is one thing they’ve always told me to stay grounded and humble and not change for anything.” On a bona fide note, she shared how although there have been challenges along the way, she likes to look at them as learning curves and puzzles that she gets to figure out. “The music industry like most artistic fields can be pretty volatile and some days can have way more clarity than others so it’s important to constantly self-actualise. Though a Bollywood and film music singer I’ve also parallelly been an indie artist trying to release her own songs and having to do everything from producing to shooting my own videos to editing them and it can all be very overwhelming. But I like to look at things in a good light and try to turn the obstacles into fun new things I get to learn. That’s pretty much how I started using music production DAWs and editing softwares, cause as they say, necessity is the mother of invention! It also helps when you genuinely enjoy doing all of it!” She feels that there’s always going to be conflicting advice and problems- dress glamorously, dress differently; charge more, charge less; be picky about your songs, don’t be picky and be accessible— there’s always all kinds of advice but at the end of the day you listen to that voice inside of you, and always ALWAYS do only what feels right. The ‘MAHARANI’ singer is also huge on body positivity and inclusiveness. “It really makes me happy to see that such conversations have begun and are normalised topics now. I remember growing up an insecure chubby girl who would always feel the need to overcompensate her size with her personality. I would feel that boys saw me as a friend and not a potential girlfriend because I wasn’t skinny, and would look at my thin friends and want a body like theirs. As I grew older, I realised how unidimensionally I was thinking and that all body types are sexy and beautiful and have their own charm. What were my “thunder thighs” or “fat legs” and how they became the hottest thing about me. It’s strange how far a little bit of self-confidence can take someone and I’m sure a lot of body insecure girls and boys must have had it worse. I’m so glad though that things have changed over the years but I think overall the media and TV still, by large, represents beauty standards in the old school way. We’ve just scratched the surface. But every step counts and I feel so happy to associate with a magazine that resonates with body positivity and puts a smile on the face of my younger self and hopefully many other kids too!” Lastly, Nikhita shared how like MAHARANI, she hopes to see more of her singles and self-composed releases also do as well as her film playback music. “That truly is one of my personal goals and visions. I want MAHARANI to be playing next to Naach Meri Rani and all my music to be loved equally! Anupriya Goenka Talks About Her Experience In The South by Ose Swaraj Anupriya Goenka Talks About Her Experience In The South 30 November 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement In a candid interview with L'utopia magazine, actress Anupriya Goenka replicates her career graph and narrates her journey. We asked her why she decided to switch from corporate to the business world and whether she would still like to go back and she said, “I was working in the business space, then, in the corporate space and then acting happened to me. So, I started working very early in life, when I was around 16 and primarily, everything I was doing for the next seven eight years was only to make ends meet.” She also tells us that she started helping her father in his business, when she was in 11th standard. She says, “By the time I passed out and started working with him full time during my college, the business was already sinking and we had to make a choice, so I made the decision to wrap it up.” In her later years of college, she did a lot of travelling to various places to terminate the business and that was the time she started working in the corporate space. She tells us, “I started with call centres and then moved on to becoming an executive assistant, worked up with some top names and some major companies. By the time I shifted to Bombay for corporate work and later settled my family in couple of years, I started to feel that I needed to do something for myself and something creative.” She tells us about her interest in theatre since her school days and about her brief experience of it in the NSD extension workshops when she was in 12th standard. She says that theatre wasn’t possible with the normal working hours of a corporate setup and how she came up with a way out. “I had taken a leave to do theatre for some time and was supposed to come back to my corporate job. That was the initial plan but that kind of never happened because theatres didn’t pay my bills and I had to start earning from this line of work in order to sustain and be an actor on a regular basis. So that’s how commercial acting started for me.” We asked, whether she plans on going back to the corporate space and she said, “I don’t plan on going back to the corporate space as of now because acting is my passion, it’s my life and I really enjoy doing it. But at some point of time I do want to open up a small scale industry, I do want to be involved in some sort of a manufacturing setup. I plan on doing something which involves local artisans and have a shop setup, somewhere in the countryside; that’s also a dream along with acting, a distant dream as of now but, I believe that will happen sometime.” We asked about her association with the “Down to earth” organization, she told us how she wanted to do something for other people, kids, their education etc. She says, “It was ridden with some challenges because of the lack of proper systems and regular teachers. To have one kid or couple of kids constantly be with you was a little difficult because they keep getting shuffled between different centres and they would keep going back to working in odd jobs to sustain their families as well but, Down to earth really worked very hard in giving a regular sort of guidance, aligning themselves with each one of these kids and their future irrespective of where they were and keeping track of their performance. They really have shaped some lives beautifully.” She tells us about her contribution to the association as, “Primarily being involved in the events, support them as a volunteer, go meet the kids, get involved in teaching them sometimes and doing activities with them because it’s always nice for the kids to see outside people come and be part of their lives, which inspires them, gives them a perspective. I tried to support the organisation in any little way that I could.” To serve the obvious curiosities of every fan, we asked her about her upcoming projects and she told us about Asura 2 which should be released any time soon on voot, then there is a film called Gubaar which she completed last year and is playing the role of a psycho killer with a bit of comic space, with Vinay Pathak. Then there is Sultan of Delhi, a hotstar series, which has been directed by Milan luthria and Suparn Verma, which again is expected to come out next year sometime. Right now, as a main lead, she is shooting for a film called “Khilone” which is an action film. We asked her about the different experiences she had in the south industry compared to Bollywood to which she said, “ I think south industry functions differently than Bollywood – in the casting process, in the process of how you meet directors, how you audition for parts. I believe there are mediators but not so many casting directors, at least not at that time when I started off in 2013. That was my very first year in acting and I had done two films back to back, Potogadu and Paathshala, both in Telugu and after that I came back to Bombay and started working here more regularly so I don’t have that much of experience but, they really welcome you with open arms, they are very supportive, extremely quick with their work, very methodical and it was a great experience working there!” About facing the language barriers, while working in the south industry she tells us, “Both the projects were different as to how we approached rehearsing for dialogues and shooting scenes. In one project I had actually stationed myself in Hyderabad for one and a half months, just to prepare for the role and we had a bound script given to us and we kept rehearsing the lines. I am very bad at mugging, I was even as a student so it was very challenging for me. Generally I am very quick with my lines but because there was a language barrier, I had to really stress over learning my lines and trying to understand them rather than mugging and then emoting of course. In the second project, our lines would literally come to us on the day of shoot during hair and makeup and they were far more chilled about it. I would learn lines, sit with the Ads, they would make me understand each and every word as much as possible so that it would be easier for me to emote but a lot would be handled during dubbing to be honest. It was a great fun experience, though challenging it was quite a learning experience and the people in Hyderabad thankfully talk a lot in Hindi and understand it as well. They are very supportive so it never really felt that I was an outsider except for, when they would converse around me in their own language which I had tried to pick up on as much as possible, it was a very good experience!” I would love to work in the south again, hoping a good opportunity comes. They are doing fabulous work and their hard work and passion shows in everything project. The quality of content they are making is super and inspiring. We asked her, which book or people had the most influence on her growth and why, and she answered that the book which had a great impact on her life is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. She said, “It’s just the nature of the book of being so hopeful and full of promise and perseverance, talking about the mysteries of life.” Apart from that she told us that she greatly admires Amrita Preetam. She said, “She was a poetess, a novelist who was so filled with emotions and insight about life and yet, also very brave, very vocal and very edgy. She was this perfect combination of enigma and romanticism along with being very brave and edgy in her pursuits for what she wanted to do in her life and I greatly respect her for that.” We asked her if she could tell us about her aims for the future and the impact she aspires to have on her audience and fans and she told us, “There are many things that I want to accomplish, both career wise and personally. As an actor I want to do more challenging roles, roles which explore different aspects of me as a performer, like this year, thankfully, I have been part of different genres like, I am playing a psycho killer in one, I always wanted to do some comedy so it has a bit of comedy in it, I am doing an action film, I am playing this very negative and unredeemable character in Sultan of Delhi. So I am doing a variety of roles and I hope the audience will appreciate it and see the versatility even more. I have always got to work with great people and have very potent roles in the past like Padmaavat, War, Tiger Zinda hai, Asura, Ashram and mostly all these were intense characters. I do want to do a slice of life, and easy breezy characters too. Also I did play a rural character in Meri desh ki dharti but I want to explore that, much more. I did Padmaavat, i love period dramas aspire to do them even more. So there is a lot that I want to do as an actor. I really want to be attached to subjects which also have a social message and have an impact on my audiences, to be able to contribute in saying something that needs to be talked about and initiating a dialogue. So I hope through my work and acting I am able to make a larger difference and talk about subjects which have a bearing on us and our everyday lives, subjects that need to be discussed and the mindsets that need to be changed, like in Criminal justice 2 we discussed domestic violence, a very important discussion and I was glad to see the kind of dialogue that got initiated. I would like to do more of those things, those kinds of roles and bring about some kind of impact and difference.” Being a body positivity and women empowering magazine, we asked her to share her views on these topics for our readers. She stated, “I think as women, we are so blessed to be born in this sex, we have so much to offer in terms of our versatility of emotions, we are kind, compassionate, passionate, we can emote and experience much more, we understand emotions in a very different way and we can be strong and sensitive at the same time. I think being a woman is a blessing and it’s really sad that we get bogged down by having certain sort of parameters to follow when it comes to looking a certain way, be it in terms of the way we are coloured or shaped or dressed. I love a voluptuous body and dark skin and I am dusky. I have always been very comfortable with the way my body is. Though, I want to be and feel fit. I never really aspired to be a certain figure only, even though my job requires me to be. I need to be feeling good and be agile and physically fit which is very important I feel. But I do not want to cage myself by pressurising myself and suppressing my belief system, or my confidence because I need to be a certain size. So it’s very important to me to be comfortable in your skin and to appreciate what you have and that can only come from having the innate sense of appreciation of who you are. So fashion or being looked upon a certain way, is not so much about what is given to you and but more about what you do with it, how you appreciate and inspire yourself.’ You have to use fashion to make yourself feel good and not for others to feel good about you.
