  • Wandering into the room of Virginia Woolf

SOCIETY by Aparajita Jaiswal Wandering into the room of Virginia Woolf 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Reckoned as a feminist icon and literary genius, Adeline Virginia Woolf is best known for her novel “ Mrs Dalloway”, “To the lighthouse” and essay “ A Room of one’s own”. She was born in an affluent family with literary inclinations shaping her childhood and proclivity for reading and writing. Woolf began to write professionally in 1900 encouraged by her father Leslie Stephen. Her writing style is almost poetic, stream of consciousness of characters binding together the narrative. Like so many writers and artists she wasn’t famous during her lifetime and even several decades after her death. Her popularity rose to newer heights during the 1970s feminist criticism movement. She was a part of Bloomsbury group- a group of English writers, artists and philosophers in the early 20th century which was the hub of art, affairs and intellectual discussions. As Dorothy Parker quipped, “They painted in circles, lived in squares, and loved in triangles”. Viriginia Woolf is also known for her old school romance with her husband decorated with love letters and cute pet names, they called each Mandrill and Mongoose. Virginia was a champion of women equality and independence during her time and lived a life which was unconventional and revolutionary in a sense. One of her most famous longer essays “ A Room of One’s Own” was derived from two lectures she gave at Cambridge University. She talks about “ A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”. She famously gave an analogy of Shakespeare’s sister who, equipped with the same genius could not be equally famous given the position of her gender. Virginia also talked about Bronte sisters, George Eliot and other women writers who wrote under pen names because that was the only way to move forward in the hallways of the literary world. Yet beneath this shy yet social beautiful writer is a sad woman who was sexually abused as a child and battled mental illness throughout her life. She had a mental breakdown on the death of her mother in 1895. It was the first of many more to come. Institutionalized many times, she attempted suicide and finally one morning in 1941, she filled her pocket with stones and drowned in a nearby river. Leaving behind a legacy of novels, diaries and letters, her life remains an enigma, much like her death. But Virginia, through her sad rebellion and constant musings, fills us with hope. Hope in the strength of good ideas to come forward, irrespective of gender and social circumstances and for us to be forbearers of a future more equitable than the past. • Alexandra Victoria Bonte: From Olympic Dreams To Empowering Women Through Real Estate

Alexandra Victoria Bonte: From Olympic Dreams To Empowering Women Through Real Estate By Sakshi Batra Alexandra Victoria Bonte: From Olympic Dreams To Empowering Women Through Real Estate 7 January 2025 FASHION Advertisement Alexandra Victoria Bonte , a former equestrian champion, turned her competitive spirit into entrepreneurial success at just 23. As co-founder of Bonte Filipidis Real Estate Agency and partner in the Golden Real Estate Investment Fund, she’s redefining luxury living in Portugal, Ibiza, and the French Riviera. Driven by her love for architecture and design, and guided by her motto, “Credere... Lottare... Vincere...” (Believe... Strive... Conquer...), Alexandra’s journey is a testament to passion and perseverance. From Olympic dreams to building a real estate empire, her story is one of resilience, empowerment, and visionary leadership. From Athlete To Entrepreneur To Influencer "My journey has been a rollercoaster of ambition and reinvention “she mentioned. “As an athlete training for the Olympics, I experienced the heartbreak of shattered dreams”. That moment pushed her to pivot and channel her energy into business. Real estate had caught her attention as a niche waiting to be tapped, prices were low, and she saw an upcoming boom driven by global experts. As her business grew, so did her passion for fashion. She adores the artistry of cities like Paris, Milan, London, and Los Angeles, where architecture and trends collide beautifully. “Dressing well is an extension of who you are - it’s a statement of confidence, much like her real estate agency, which celebrates strong, trendsetting women” she says. Championing Women Empowerment Empowering women is the cornerstone of her philosophy. Having grown up in Portugal, where she witnessed cultural chauvinism firsthand, lower salaries and fewer opportunities for women there she decided to challenge the narrative by building a team that primarily employs women, showing that women are just as capable as men. It was never about being a feminist for her but about achieving equality in the workforce. Unfortunately, “Gender disparities still exist in Portugal and beyond” she exclaimed. Rising Above The Challenges Talking about the challenges she mentioned that COVID-19 was a significant test for her. “While the real estate agency was gaining momentum, the pandemic hit, halting everything - marketing, property showings, even day-to-day operations. Our business collapsed, like many others”. But she believed “Adversity breeds creativity”. During that downtime, she leaned into social media, creating content that blended properties with a lifestyle narrative. It was a game-changer for her which not only helped her stay connected with clients but also redefined how they presented their brand. That period taught her the power of adaptability. Fashion That Defines Alexandra Bonte’s Style "I love mixing vintage pieces with modern trends—blazers are my ultimate staple”. Chanel’s timeless elegance is her favorite, and she admires the classic French style as much as the all-American Ralph Lauren look. She gravitates towards prêt-à-porter pieces that flatters her figure without being too revealing—classic yet understated. When it comes to colors, she doesn’t have strict preferences; she simply chooses the shades that complement her complexion and hair at that moment. “My style isn’t just about following trends but about incorporating timeless vintage elements into my wardrobe” she says. Her wardrobe focuses on quality over quantity – The pieces that endures time and trends. Inside Alexandra Bonte’s Signature Instagram Style Secrets "Well, I can’t reveal all my secrets! But I’ll say this - haircare plays a pivotal role”, she exclaimed with a smile. She invests in structured treatments to keep her hair healthy and vibrant. As for styling, it’s about balance and refinement. Her goal is to create looks that feel effortless yet put-together. Shaping The Future: Alexandra Bonte’s Exciting Upcoming Projects One of the projects that she is most passionate about is unfolding in Africa—a sustainable smart city in Nigeria. “This venture is not just about infrastructure; it’s about creating a future that empowers communities and champions women’s leadership” she mentioned. “At the heart of this project is a focus on women empowerment, sustainability, and holistic development. From schools and hospitals to offices, malls, and theatres, it’s designed to be a complete ecosystem that redefines modern living.” For her, this is more than just a career milestone—"It’s a meaningful contribution to Africa’s growth and a testament to the transformative power of women-led initiatives." Redefining Success, Empowering Women, And Shaping The Future Alexandra Victoria Bonte’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. From Olympic dreams to building a luxury real estate empire, she has proven that resilience and passion can turn setbacks into triumphs. As a trailblazer in her field and a champion of women’s empowerment, Alexandra is rewriting the rules of success. With bold ventures like her sustainable smart city in Africa, she’s not just shaping skylines—she’s inspiring a new generation to dream big, break barriers, and lead with purpose. • Raveena Mehta, The Rising Phoenix

Raveena Mehta, The Rising Phoenix by Naisargi Devdher Raveena Mehta, The Rising Phoenix 17 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement The beautiful and incredulous singer, Raveena Mehta talks about her journey of becoming a singer and the path of good mental health that can lead one there. This story comes from the very depth of Raveena Mehta's journey as an artist, especially with the Pandemic hitting the world hard. Speaking of which, she mentions, "When the pandemic hit, I lived in my home studio. I have a home set up where I record a lot of my music. I decided to get into a routine to make a cover everyday and worked on composing. This led me to release around 7 songs in 2020 which was a great feeling. It has been incredible to see the way India has digitized over the last two years, an immense amount of technological progress." Speaking of success, it's one of the most beautiful feelings in the entire world; when reality strikes an artist! It just glows over the body and the mind, when the artist makes it big in the industry. However, Raveena does not recollect any such moment where she realized she was going big, but continues to say, "I don't think there was ever such a moment where I realised I was going big, but when I was approached to demo with 'Casanova Acoustic', that felt pretty great! Reality striking was never a daunting thing, reality is also what you make of it and depends on how you are viewing your cup, hopefully always half full. I also believe maintaining a small inner circle is one of the most important things to remain grounded and level headed in a whirlwind of an industry." Raveena is not only successful nationally but recognised for her talent all over the globe, at film festivals and red carpets. Raveena exclaims gratefully, "For artists, it is always incredible to be able to see your work being recognised globally. I find it endearing when my Hindi songs are appreciated in Cannes. When I was there for the Film festival, it felt brilliant to know the music that comes from India is so sought after." Singing soulfully has always reached to the most interior bosom of a being and in doing so, Raveena Mehta has attained incredulous levels of success! "I define success with deriving happiness. I tend to keep myself and my headspace quite process oriented and so I find happiness in smaller, process driven moments. Of course, when I release a song and I can see that people appreciate the music, that most definitely also makes me feel successful. Success for me means earning respect and focusing on my happiness." When the appreciation of fans and people hits, the gaze is difficult to handle. The expectations, the build ups or the love is tedious and risky to respond to! Raveena truly respects all her listeners and fans, understanding that respecting them would earn her respect! "I truly respect all my listeners and fans. I feel blessed to know that people out there listen to and appreciate my music. I try to meet their expectations with my music. I truly feel like as an artist, you have to strike a balance between the things that want to be heard from you and the things you wish to create, remaining authentic and yourself. There’s a happy medium in there somewhere." When the audience speculate rumours, or show disrespect towards the art and the song, many artists feel undervalued. Everyone is entitled to their own tastes and opinions. To this day, in the world, the fear of a song being perceived incorrectly, is tremendous and has the capacity of wrecking one's mental health. Raveena, reflects on both, the expectations of people as well as one's mental health. "In my opinion, music is art and ultimately art is subjective and open to interpretation. To that point, I feel it becomes imperative to try to detach yourself from the work to an extent; so you can allow the work to grow and evolve wholeheartedly. I personally don't think I have ever felt too worried about a song being misinterpreted or misunderstood." Raveena also talks about how one's mental peace is key while working in a creative field. Creating can only be brought forward with a clear mind and peaceful environment. "Mental health is everything. I believe strongly in preserving one's mental sanctity, constantly focusing on self betterment and doing the things that make you the best version of yourself. These are definitely deliberate efforts and as for me, singing and drawing is therapeutic and it definitely helps me remain in touch with myself." Having said that, a lot of discipline is required from one's team as well. Every form of art, including a well produced album requires a strong and disciplined team. Raveena also comments on the same saying, "One annoying trait for me is tardiness, I generally find it annoying especially if it is concerning work for example in the form of a meeting. But hey, I also recognise that Mumbai traffic is also very hectic." Hectic schedules and a demanding creative field, on several instances, can also lead to mind blocks. Raveena adds, "If I ever have a mind block while i’m working, I tend to take some time for myself; I either go for a walk or do something that brings me a lot of peace. I try to disassociate any kind of pressure that is possibly creating a wall between my thoughts and inspiration." This global icon reinforced the importance of being true to herself while retaining the soul of her music and the integrity of her sound. However while acknowledging all of it, she remarked on a very beautiful note, "I find that sometimes in chasing trends, it is very easy to lose the soul of the music. In today's age with reels, tiktok and instant gratification which is equally as important to generating viewership, this can also be a double edged sword. While a lot of today's artists consider trends, it is also important to consider and retain the soul and integrity of your sound." • 5 Ways to Always Look CLASSY

5 Ways to Always Look CLASSY by Tanvi Punia 5 Ways to Always Look CLASSY 16 July 2021 FASHION Advertisement Classy style never goes out of fashion. It’s the biggest compliment when someone describes a person’s style as being classy. It’s definitely what everyone should strive to be. Classy style doesn’t always have to be boring as one can always incorporate classier trendy pieces into their looks. And of course, there’s so much more to being a classy person than just the way one looks. Here, the prime focus is just on how to look classy. Through this article, one can learn 5 easy ways to always look classy. So, let’s get started! Keep Clothes Pristine One should keep their clothes looking pristine and clean at all times. What is meant by this is that a person doesn’t always have to go out and spend hundreds of dollars getting really expensive clothes. Instead, even if the person is wearing something that’s relatively cheaper and they present themselves well and wear them right, they can make for a very classy outfit. One should always have their clothes crease-free. Balance the Outfits One can limit the amount of skin they show by not showing too much skin everywhere. Well, it is completely okay to wear something slightly revealing but the rule that most people like to go by is to balance it out. So, if a person is wearing something slightly revealing on the top, they can balance it out with something a bit more conservative on the bottom such as pants that can cover their legs. One can also wear skinny fit and show off their figure but it is much classier to cover up the bottom half and vice versa. Minimal and Natural Make-up Obviously, everyone would still do a few things to enhance their looks but one should not go overboard. With make-up, the three things to focus on would be the skin, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Everyone’s skin should always look nice and clean. There’s nothing worse than a cakey foundation look. In this day and age, everyone is going for a more natural, glowy look so lighter make-up should be preferred. Eyebrows definitely frame one’s face. If someone has messy eyebrows, no matter how nice their clothes or hair are, their face won’t look put together. As soon as they’ll have nice and tidy eyebrows, it will enhance their overall look. Wear Dainty Jewellery With everyday jewellery, it is always classier to go with dainty jewellery that looks high-quality. One can even wear them in the shower and not worry about them getting tarnished. So, having a few pieces that are really dainty and of good quality would last through the years and would definitely give a classier look overall. Wear Comfortable Clothes There’s nothing classy about wearing something uncomfortable and constantly keep adjusting. It’s a sure thing that everyone would have experienced these clothes that look really beautiful but are a bit uncomfortable. It just makes them look not very confident with themselves and this constant fidgeting is just not classy. So, one should choose their clothing items very consciously. So, these were the 5 ways of always looking classy. Incorporating them into daily life can make anyone look classy! • If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht

If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht by Aadhya Venkatesh If you can dream it, you can achieve it – In conversation with Donal Bisht 21 August 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement As a big believer in dreaming big and working hard to achieve your dreams, Donal Bisht was a Journalist and Anchor who pursued her dream of acting and modelling. In college, her seniors pursuing film studies always called her to work in their short films and music videos. Despite being pushed towards being an actor, Donal believed she wanted to pursue the media industry and work as a journalist. She even established herself in the field with a four-year-long career but eventually realised that "the work did not make my heart happy and did not satisfy me". It was then that she dropped everything and came to Mumbai to pursue her passion for acting. "I really believe in destiny". She has been in the show business for five years and has only been climbing the ladder of success. Having started with TV shows, Donal did four years of back-to-back TV with shows like Ek Deewana Tha and Roop . She then realised that to achieve creative satisfaction, she had to do something different. "I did a South bilingual film in Kannada and Telugu. The shift, I would say creatively, is great when you do different things", she said. She never knew Telugu and didn't have any exposure to the language. But after multiple workshops and extra efforts on sets, she managed to get well versed in the dialogues and expressions. "I used to keep the first AD with me to do the lines thoroughly, in and out". She broke through the language barrier and had her proud moment when people asked her if she was a natural Telugu speaker. Now that her film is in the post-production stage, Donal is excited to see herself in the role. Once her film was on the verge of completion, she entered the Big Boss house and became one of the most respected contestants in her two weeks there. "People come to me and say they want to become like me and love my personality". Having done four back to back soap shows, she now wants to venture into the world of web shows, which she is doing through her MX player original Show, Zakhm. Zakhm is a "romantic thriller show where I play Kavya, a healer who heals people's wounds". She is excited about the release of the show. Donal is also a TEDx speaker and always urges her fans to dream. "Dreaming is very important. If you can dream, you can achieve". She says that once a person has an unrelenting dream that they strive to achieve, persistence will take them forward on their journey. Those who dream can achieve whatever they aspire to. The one mantra she follows in life is to leave no stone unturned. She believes that persistence is critical and that a person should never stop. "First try to fly. If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl, but you do the best". Running and Weight Lifting are her preferred modes of workout. She runs on the treadmill for 20 minutes a day and believes that fitness is what you eat, and one must take care of what suits them and what doesn't. Along with exercise, she also recommends her audiences watch their food intake and monitor what they eat because, more often than not, it is a particular fruit, vegetable, or seafood that causes allergies and bloating. "Observe your body and the way it reacts to food". Donal's favourite travel destination is her family home in Delhi, where she goes for all significant occasions. Other than that, one place she hopes to visit soon is Paris, which is her second favourite place. #donalbisht #coverstory #interview #fashion #actress SEARCH Actor Kangna Sharma gives a sneak peek into the movie of her life COVER STORIES Finding Power In Individuality: In Conversation With The Stunning Alina Rai COVER STORIES Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress COVER STORIES Kavya Thapar And Her Versatile Acting Career That Cuts Across Regional Lines COVER STORIES Ahsaas Channa Talks About Her Mother Being The Inspiration Behind Her Career COVER STORIES POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Shriniwas Kodape Neon Nights And Yellow Lights: The Sonic World Of Natania Lalwani 30 April 2025 COVER STORIES By Sakshi Batra Farhan Khan: Where Poetry Meets Hip-Hop, And Stories Come Alive 10 February 2025 COVER STORIES By Anushka Sharma A Journey Shaped By Courage, Creativity, And Social Media With Aditi Sharma 19 October 2024 COVER STORIES By Anushka Sharma A Journey Of Transformation, Empathy, And Unwavering Passion With Jitin Gulati 11 October 2024 COVER STORIES RELATED POSTS Advertisement

  • How Young Is Too Young For A Skincare Routine

By Anushka Sharma By Anushka Sharma How Young Is Too Young For A Skincare Routine 24 June 2024 BEAUTY Advertisement Advertisement In today's beauty-conscious world, the question of when to start a skincare routine for young children often sparks debate among parents, dermatologists, and skincare enthusiasts alike. While some argue that introducing skincare early instills healthy habits, others caution against exposing young skin to unnecessary products too soon. So, how young is too young for a skincare routine? The consensus among dermatologists leans towards simplicity and necessity when it comes to skincare for children. Babies and toddlers generally have delicate skin that is more sensitive to external influences. Their skin barrier, responsible for protecting against irritants and infections, is still developing. For infants, less is often more. Gentle cleansers and moisturizers specifically formulated for baby skin are usually sufficient to maintain skin health. As children grow older, around the age of five or six, environmental exposures increase with outdoor play and school activities. This can lead to dirt and sweat buildup, making a gentle cleansing routine more relevant. Dermatologists typically recommend a basic regimen that includes a mild cleanser and moisturizer suitable for young skin. These products should be free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, and unnecessary additives that could potentially irritate sensitive skin. When puberty hits, usually between the ages of eight and thirteen for girls and slightly later for boys, hormonal changes trigger increased oil production and the potential for acne. This transitional phase often prompts parents to consider more targeted skincare routines involving products designed for acne-prone skin. However, dermatologists caution against aggressive treatments and instead advocate for gentle formulations that balance oil production without stripping the skin of essential moisture. The cultural and societal pressures around beauty and skincare can also influence parental decisions. In some communities, skincare rituals are deeply ingrained from a young age as a form of self-care and hygiene. However, experts advise against unnecessary complexity or introducing products with active ingredients like retinoids and exfoliants too early. These potent ingredients are generally more suitable for mature skin and can cause adverse effects on developing skin cells. Ultimately, the decision to start a skincare routine for a child rests with their parents or caregivers, guided by dermatological advice. It's essential to prioritize skin health over cosmetic concerns and to tailor products to individual skin needs rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach. Consulting with a pediatric dermatologist can provide personalized recommendations based on a child's unique skin type and any specific concerns. In conclusion, while there is no definitive age at which every child should start a skincare routine, a balanced approach emphasizing gentle care and age-appropriate products is crucial. Early education on basic skincare habits such as sun protection, gentle cleansing, and moisturizing sets a foundation for lifelong skin health. By fostering healthy skincare practices from a young age, parents can empower their children to take ownership of their skin health while respecting its natural development. Navigating the delicate balance between protection and prevention is key in addressing the question of when to start a skincare routine for children. By prioritizing simplicity, gentleness, and informed decision-making, parents can ensure that their child's skincare journey begins on a foundation of care and consideration for their developing skin.
