  • The Saga Of Saloni And The Rise Of GulaboJaipur

by Anushka Sharma The Saga Of Saloni And The Rise Of GulaboJaipur 8 March 2023 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement As each year passes, the world meets with more and more wins for women, and our nation is no exception to this phenomenon. From women being able to receive the accolades in various industries to witnessing them being employed in the rural part of India, this Women’s Day, we’re just happy to have come this far. To have reached corners and nooks that this nation has treasured since time immemorial. Narrating a tale as old as time(10 years ago), There once existed a brand that believed in building itself through embracing the heritage and craftsmanship of Rajasthan. It believed in exuding the best of Jaipur in particular, and soared high enough to carve a niche in the hearts of some Bollywood biggies. While the tale doesn’t end here, there’s a lot to catch up on GulaboJaipur . GulaboJaipur is so much more than a successful brand in today’s times. It represents how Saloni, the founder, saw the world of indigenous fashion through rose tinted glasses, and materialized all that she had once envisioned for her brand. If we take it long, long ago, it was Saloni’s mother who believed in her eye for design and gave her the capital to start the business. Needless to say, the capital has been wonderfully utilized and multiplied in paramount ways. GulaboJaipur has been casting its magic over the masses ever since its inception. It’s been 10 years since the brand gained momentum, and beautifully so, hasn’t stopped since. Situated in a region of India which is heavily diverse in beauty, customs and traditions, Saloni wanted to do more than just extract the cultural and aesthetic segment of Rajasthan. Along with curating some beloved pieces which were later cherished by Kareena Kapoor and various other celebrities of taste, she was also empowering the women of Rajasthan by offering them employment. “I try to employ more and more artisans from all parts of Rajasthan, such as Bagru, Sanganer, and many more. Each village in Rajasthan is different and each sub-region defines differences in craftsmanship. I also believe that women can live with more pride if they are financially independent.” - Saloni As something noteworthy that the brand has experienced in these few years, Saloni recalls how she jumped with joy when she had received an email from the Pataudi Palace. The email expressed Kareena Kapoor’s keen interest in shopping for maternity wear from GulaboJaipur . That incident played the role of a good luck charm in the business which later flourished amidst a lot of celebrities. The key-takeaway in this entire process of fashion stardom was how the brand was loved, appreciated and admired for its core values and design. As a brand that has existed for more than ten years, we didn’t expect Saloni to remember much about her very first collection. To our surprise, she has a vivid memory of every scaled-down detail of her first collection, from launching Anarkalis with broad gotta patti to her velvet scarves. If this doesn’t make one believe in the essence of a brand being the founder’s baby, we don’t know what will! Saloni also recalls how GulaboJaipur was earlier marketed and managed in terms of its sales by Saloni’s husband, and he indeed took the business to new, scalable, virtual heights. But do you know what differentiates GulaboJaipur from the multitude of labels that exist out there? Nothing. The sheer beauty of this brand is how it embraces everyday wear with so much grace and grandeur. Saloni puts it perfectly, “I believe in making clothes that are very sadabahar and can be worn anywhere and everywhere.” Well, she clearly has mixed a lot of chic-essence in these Sadabahar attires, and we indeed love every bit of it! Saloni’s saga of the revival of indigenous fashion in the most effortless way possible is worth admiration. Her story inspires and celebrates women on a similar rhythm. While the individuality and confidence with which she reigns her brand teaches us a lot about how it ultimately results in believing in oneself, her success as a fashion designer celebrates how a woman cherished her roots in her work at all times and yet took over the world by a storm! • Narrating Stories With Fabric: Rick Roy’s Masterful Ability To Influence An Era Of Fashion

by Akshay T S Narrating Stories With Fabric: Rick Roy’s Masterful Ability To Influence An Era Of Fashion 7 July 2023 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement With his creative flair and impeccable attention to detail, the costume designer Rick Roy brings characters to life through the power of wardrobe. Steeped in a world of imagination and boundless creativity, the costume designer is a masterful storyteller in his own right. He has a unique ability of translating the essence of a character into visual form, crafting costumes that not only enhance the narrative but also become an integral part of the storytelling process. Each stitch, fabric choice, and accessory speak volumes, reflects the nuances of personality, era, and emotion. He is a master collaborator, working closely with directors, actors, and production teams to bring their collective vision to life. He has worked with a variety of Bollywood films where his costume designing ability has melded his own artistic instincts with the broader creative vision of the production. When asked about why he chose costume designing as a career, he inferred that he was always an artistic person with an eye for aesthetics and colors. He had never shown much interest in traditional studies and he was glad to have found the support of his parents since they were also pretty much inclined towards art. He further talks about what usually goes on inside his mind, revealing that insanity paves way to the creation of art. His head is usually brimming with multitudes of ideas and he finds it hard to fixate on one specific idea for a design. As a costume designer, he loves creating different looks for different characters in a variety of films and that way he is able to channel these ideas into multiple areas. Diving into the topic of fashion critiques with the question of which Indian fashion critique, in his opinion, does their job well, he takes a moment before revealing his answer. He believes that there is a lot of fashion know-how that goes behind fashion critiquing and it serves more than just the purpose of entertainment. There is more to fashion critiquing than just criticization and he is slowly learning to master it on his own. So, there is no specific fashion critique that comes to his mind yet. When asked about who his favourite fashion designer is, he immediately expresses his admiration for the international designer John Galliano. Other designers whom he really looks up to are Alexander McQueen, Manish Arora, Tarun Wendell, Abu Sandeep, Rohit Bal, Jivalaya Sabya, and Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna. He finds their individual voice and authentic, trend-setting viewpoint to be very inspiring. His personal sense of style can be described as a mix of the eccentric rock grunge, showy disco colours yet something that brags a comfortable fit. He believes he is a maximalist with a bit of ‘extra’ in all of his looks, but he further clarifies how careful and economical he is with his purchases so that his every buy can be utilised in the best way possible. Another candid question of what place has he learnt the most about fashion from, he reveals that a lot of the major learnings of his career has come from people more than the place itself. They have taught him more than just the technicalities of fashion and one of the people whom he credits the most is one of his co-workers Malaika. He elaborates more on the workings of the fashion industry when a particularly insightful question about what needs to be changed I the fashion industry is asked. He majorly talked about trends, iterating that people need to stop following trends and instead, start creating them. There is an individual point of view that needs to be developed. One of the major inputs in the Indian fashion industry comes from wedding couture and a lot of designers have followed through with the same genre, limiting the Indian fashion industry to that specific genre mainly. He enunciates how he finds inspiration in people when asked the question of who or what inspires him the most. Most of his designs are for the characters on screen and hence, they also serve as the source of inspiration of him. He carefully understands the nuances of a character and works upon their wardrobe instead of creating a look that pleases his personal tastes. He further tells us about his favourite project till date which was one of the recent Bollywood films called ‘Sarvagunn Sampann’ that he has worked on. It was one of his best experiences as it gave him a lot of creative freedom and seamless support from the director and the producer of the film. There was a lot of trust involved in the process and he truly felt at home as he worked upon this exciting project. Perhaps this is what made it one of his favourite projects till date. With his undeniable talent and passion, Rick Roy enhances and illuminates the world of storytelling, infusing it with an enchanting visual tapestry that allows us to truly believe in the magic of the characters we encounter. His artistry and love for fashion is a true reminder of the profound impact costume has in shaping our perception and connection with the stories we all hold so dear. • A Brief History on Alexander McQueen

by Akash Khatri A Brief History on Alexander McQueen 1 January 2021 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement If you are fond of premium fashion labels and well aware of the high-level fashion brands then you must be well acquainted with the Alexander McQueen label. The first genuine curiosity for the ones who are not familiar with this name would be who is Alexander McQueen? Alexander McQueen was a famous British fashion designer who brought a revolution in the fashion industry with his rebellious fashion innovations back in the 1980s. He got himself in the fashion industry quite early in his life but soon his flamboyant and out-of-the-box and bold fashion styles brought him under the spotlight. McQueen’s early runway collections developed his reputation for controversy and shock tactics with trousers aptly named “bumsters” and a collection titled “Highland Rape”. These collections had also made people from the Brit fashion industry cringe, but eventually, his talent prevailed, and he became known for his dramatic and extraordinary fashion shows and cat-walks which were sheer head-turners for everyone. He was also one of the first fashion designers who worked with Indian models in London. Some of McQueen’s accomplishments included being one of the youngest designers to achieve the title “British Designer of the Year”, which he won four times between 1996 and 2003 also he was into a partnership deal with the Gucci group and his own label which he founded in the year 1992. By the end of the year 2007, McQueen had his own fashion house established in the cities of London, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, and Las Vegas. Coming to his personal life, he was gay and quite vocal about his sexuality and he never hid anything from the world. But in his later life, he became addicted to drugs and even was depressed. In February 2010 he hanged himself in his home in London and left the entire world in shock and remorse. His psychologists said that he was into depression for three years consecutively and as an escapade, he was into heavy drugs. At the time of Alexander McQueen’s death, he had an eighty percent finished Autumn/Winter collection. 16 pieces of this collection were presented during Paris Fashion Week on 8 March 2010 as a tribute to this great fashion designer. • Mannat Singh, the story of an aspiring actress

by Aparajita Jaiswal Mannat Singh, the story of an aspiring actress 28 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement Mannat Singh is not just a successful model but also an aspiring actress and found a passion for acting through pure serendipity. A young, goofy, introvert whose life changed when she entered the world of modeling through Miss India, moving out of her shell. "I thought that there's so much more that I could do and I'm not just this shy person. I can go out there in the world and try to have big dreams and I can achieve whatever I want if I put my mind to it," Mannat goes on tell us "I am really glad that I took that scary step of coming to a different city from a town where everything was my comfort alongside my my family. Taking that leap of faith, coming here and working for my dreams every day, I feel like that is commendable and that is the reason that I do this. I want to be an actor and I love what I do. I love where my life is going to go and the direction that I'm on. And that's all that I've got." Mannat Singh expresses how as an actor she wishes to bring the character to life and also be true to the character she is playing. As an actor you're always striving and being fearless enough to take chances. "The whole point acting us to bring the character to life. Everybody has a process which is very different and it's a very subjective thing. It differs from person to person, actor to actor. So I don't think there's a set way of performing this art but I feel it depends on the person and the actor." There are several stages of being an actor in a show or a film. There are certain thrilling aspects and there are certain parts where hard work and focus is key. Mannat comments on the same, "I feel that I embrace and enjoy the whole process. From getting the script and reading the script, understanding the writer's point of view to actually bringing the character to life and adding my own personal touch, the whole process is extremely thrilling to me. When you're auditioning and you're going about the scene and performing in front of people, I feel like there comes a point for me where I'm knee deep into the character that I start improvising. So, when I'm improvising, I am really getting under the skin of the character and it's just coming really naturally to me. That is the point where I know that I can do this. That particular point is very exciting and thrilling for me." "Not having explored many genres yet, I would be really excited to do a thriller or mystery film or show but the most difficult genre to perform, in my opinion, is comedy, because I feel like if you can make the audience laugh and you know it all comes with ease to you, is the most difficult thing to do. If ever got a chance, I'm sure that I'll have to work really hard. As a person, I believe I'm funny and have a good sense of humor but while performing a comedic role, I believe it will be one of the most difficult things to do but I’d still like to explore that." Having asked what present day mega director inspires her and she would like to be directed by, Mannat answers with a slight glow in her eye as she talks about her inspiration, "The filmmaker that inspires me the most and that I would love to work with in the future is Sanjay Leela Bhansali as I have just really liked his work since I was a little child. I've been watching him since Devdas and then I absolutely loved guzaarish and Ram Leela, eventually all the series that he's made, all the great films that he's made till date. I like his process, the way that he makes his characters a certain way, the whole direction process and it's just very thrilling to the eye from an audience's point of view. I would like to be directed by him." Mannat believes that as an actor we must pursue and the amount of effort and work one puts in their art will always prove fruitful. As an actor, with all hardships one faces, one must always keep going and pushing their boundaries without a shadow of doubt. She speaks about her father who is a motivational speaker, she says he always said, "Mannat you will be really glad if you give it your all, if you have tried really hard as you’ll never have regrets. Don't give up. This is my dream and this is what I want to work for. That's stuck with me and that's what I tell myself. Even on days when I'm feeling low, I don't get up and I'm not able to do what I want to but there are days that you have to pick yourself up and remind yourself of the purpose that you have aspired to achieve." The filmmaker that inspires me the most and that I would love to work with in the future is Sanjay Leela Bhansali as I have just really liked his work since I was a little child. With a refreshing blend of humility and ambition, Deeksha unveiled her story, reflecting on the rollercoaster of "almost" blooming days that shaped her path. From her humble beginnings with around 40,000 followers, she made it clear that her focus was always on authenticity. "I never want to do collaborations, and I like posting whatever I feel like that shows the real me," she often told her close circle. Yet, fate had its plans. A turning point emerged when Deeksha decided to leap of faith and say yes to her first brand collaboration. The outcome was beyond her expectations, as she pocketed a considerable 10,000 units of her chosen currency. The impact was profound – a newfound sense of independence and the pride of making her parents' hearts swell with joy ignited a relentless fire within her. As we sipped our chosen beverages, Deeksha playfully shared her signature style and described her as an ode to comfort with a hint of style. "It has to be a white top and dark blue denim or shorts. But let's not forget those essential cycling shorts – they're an absolute must. Comfort shouldn't compromise style," she quipped. Moving beyond the fashion realm, Deeksha invited us into her fitness journey. With a disciplined approach, she embraced a weekly "push, pull, & legs" routine, while her abs found their strength through a dedicated circuit routine. But it wasn't all about physical prowess; Deeksha's sanctuary lay in the moments of unwinding that marked her day's end. "I believe that the moments of unwinding are sacred," Deeksha shared with a smile that held the wisdom of experience. She detailed her cherished ritual with an almost poetic description – stepping into her room, shedding the layers of makeup, and engaging in heartfelt conversations with her confidantes over a call. "It's my favorite part of the day," she admitted, "a time when I can truly be myself and recharge." Deeksha's love for skincare emerged as a common thread during these serene moments. The diligent application of creams and serums was complemented by a central ritual that spoke volumes about her character – tidying her room. "It may sound 'small,' I guess," she mused, "but I find it essential. Going to bed with everything in order sets the tone for the next day." The conversation turned toward aspirations, and Deeksha's eyes lit up with a dream she had been nurturing. "I want to collaborate with Dyson," she confessed. The aim was more than just a product acquisition; it was a testament to her determination and vision of success. "I could buy it, sure," she acknowledged, "but there's something magical about collaborating with a brand that resonates with you." Deeksha's journey, marked by dedication and a desire to prove herself, has been punctuated by challenges and lessons. "I learned this the hard way," she reflected, "but giving up or losing heart is never an option." She cautioned against getting carried away by fleeting successes, urging fellow content creators to persist even when the metrics seem unfavourable. "Keep creating content regardless of the engagement. It'll always be you versus you," she affirmed. As our conversation drew close, Deeksha shared her vision for the future – driven by kindness and grounded in humility. "I look forward to being kinder and down-to-earth," she said, her eyes gleaming with resolve. "Making my loved ones proud is what fuels my spirit." In the realm of influencers, where facades can be as captivating as they are deceiving, Deeksha Gupta stands out as a beacon of authenticity. Her journey, shaped by triumphs and trials, is an inspiring reminder that success is not just about numbers but the relentless pursuit of one's passions. With her heart set on the horizon, Deeksha Gupta continues to carve her unique path, reminding us that the journey is as important as the destination and that staying true to oneself is the most potent influence. • How Soha Ali Balances Authenticity With Content Creation

by Akshra Khandelwal How Soha Ali Balances Authenticity With Content Creation 1 September 2023 FASHION Advertisement Advertisement In the ever-evolving realm of social media, where trends rise and fall like fleeting waves, there emerges a dynamic influencer who navigates this digital landscape with grace and innovation. Soha Ali, a name synonymous with creativity and authenticity, graciously sat down for an exclusive interview, offering a glimpse into her journey, inspirations, and aspirations. "It's going pretty well, by God's grace," Soha beams, setting the tone for our conversation. She reflects on the recent trend that swept through social media, the "Barbie mania," a phenomenon that captured the virtual world's attention for a month. With a chuckle, she admits, "It was good fun while it lasted, but I'm relieved it's getting over now!" Beyond the ephemeral trends, Soha's career is on a steady ascent. Transitioning content creation from a passion to her full-time pursuit has opened doors to refine her art and connect with her audience on a deeper level. Rewinding the clock to 2020, Soha reminisces about the birth of her journey. "It was in 2020 when short-form video content on social media platforms was just taking off, with TikTok taking the lead," she shares. The platform's meteoric rise was marked by its subsequent ban, leading many content creators to pivot to Instagram. For Soha, this shift marked a pivotal moment. "I remember posting my first Reel in late 2020 just out of curiosity, which I like to call a happy accident. It blew up," she recounts, the spark of that accidental success still evident in her eyes. Since that serendipitous start, she's found her purpose in content creation—an avenue that offers community, creativity, and financial stability. Her content palette is as diverse as her influences, ranging from beauty and skincare to entertainment and lifestyle, all underscored by a strong focus on Indian fashion and aesthetics. "My phone is my workstation when it comes to planning my content," Soha reveals. "I note what other creators are doing, current trends, what my audience asks of me through comments and DMs, and other ideas I get while browsing through Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest." This meticulously crafted approach is a testament to her dedication to delivering quality content that resonates. Reflecting on her Evolution, Soha shares, "When I first started making content, it was primarily reactionary, heavily influenced by what others like me were doing and current trends." Yet, growth beckoned, and she embraced a more insightful and informative content style. "Over time, as I learned more about content creation, my present and potential audience, and what I would like to show people vs. what they want or need, it evolved to incorporate more helpful content like skincare, haircare, informed monologues about issues I felt were important, makeup tips, etc." Soha's Evolution extends to her tools and techniques. "It also became more professional since I just used my phone and a ring light when I started, but now I use more and more equipment and hire professionals for significant shoots." The journey from smartphone to studio symbolises her commitment to delivering polished, engaging content that captivates her audience. Amidst her trove of beauty insights, Soha imparts a gem of wisdom: "Apply makeup through your fingers and not a brush whenever possible. It makes it easier to spread, gives a more even finish, and helps you understand the correct amount." Her advice is grounded in practicality and self-care, evident in a creator who knows her craft's nuances. As someone frequently on the go, Soha reveals the essentials that find a place in her bag. "My trusted sunscreen, lipstick, mini perfume, a wooden comb, and some wet wipes," she lists, a minimalist kit that ensures she's well-prepared without compromising her signature style. In the realm of aspirations, Soha's eyes light up with a dream. "My dream collab (and please don't judge me for it!) is to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali," she confesses with an endearing laugh. Her admiration for the filmmaker's visual artistry and character-driven narratives is palpable. "I absolutely love his films and his style of creating vivid visual art," she shares, her voice carrying a tinge of excitement. Such an opportunity would be a fusion of her two loves—content creation and cinematic storytelling. Amidst her achievements, Soha humbly imparts a piece of wisdom for budding creators: "There's nothing more rewarding than a free conscience as a creator and knowing you're doing the best you can without compromising anything or being what you are not." Her advice echoes her journey, marked by authenticity, growth, and a commitment to her craft. As our conversation with Soha Ali draws to a close, it's evident that her path is one defined by resilience, creativity and an unwavering belief in her art. With each post and each interaction, she's crafting a digital legacy that speaks not just to trends but to the essence of self-expression. In a world characterised by rapid change, Soha stands as a beacon of authenticity, reminding us all that during the digital storm, it's the genuine voices that truly resonate. • Barkha Singh’s candid candour makes the way to an eye-catching interview

by Aparajita Jaiswal Barkha Singh’s candid candour makes the way to an eye-catching interview 6 April 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement Barkha Singh , an actor, and content creator, digs up some fewer known facts and details about her journey with interviewer Kavya Gupta. The conversation gets more exciting as Barkha discusses her YouTube Channel, her growth as an actor and a content creator, her experience shooting with Sushmita Sen and much more! Barkha Singh started her career in acting in 2015 in an MTV show. She claims that her Instagram and YouTube Content Creation were “by-products” of her acting experience. “Because of the MTV show, my Instagram handle suddenly started, skyrocketing. I was growing 20k-30k every day on Instagram. Before this, I didn’t even know content creation is a “scene” and people can do all this. I think very few people like Ashish in India had started it. Adding to this, Barkha gives us details about her inspiration to start her YouTube channel, “Because my followers started growing, the people managing me at that time, they made me realise like that since I travel so much and anyways shooting travel content, I can just upload it in one place on the YouTube channel and I was very much against starting a YouTube channel thinking I won’t be able do all of it (auditions, shooting, Instagram and YouTube and they were like, shut up and do it. As I started uploading more and more content, many tourists and boards of different countries started reaching out to me to create content on my YouTube channel. After that, I got great views you know so that’s when I decided this was the best way to make my love for travel sustainable.” When asked what she looks for in a new project before signing yes to it, Barkha reveals that other than the standard considerations regarding production and platform, the storyline and character offered to her plays an extremely important role. Barkha has had the opportunity to work alongside Sushmita Sen and claims and claims she had a wonderful experience. While contributing to wildlife and nature are some of her alternate interests, Barkha digs deeper by expressing the challenges one faces in the show industry. “I think, at least for me the most challenging part is showing restraint. A lot of people say it’s very important to select the right project. So, that is most challenging because as an actor you’re tempted to do every project that comes your way . Having the ability to pick and choose your projects is something that I feel is very challenging because every character requires a different dialect and a whole lot of work. I never bring up long hours, travel, staying away or not having weekends as challenges because all of that comes as part and parcel of being an actor. However, I think having to choose between projects and having gauze which one is good for you is most challenging thing according to me.” An eye catcher in this interview is the revelation of some of Barkha’s cherished and note-worthy accomplishments such as being a 12th board exam merit list holder and topping Maharashtra, raising awareness, and educating people for animal welfare, having the courage to make a shift into the web space and maintaining a healthy body lifestyle in terms of meditation, yoga and a fitness regime. Concluding the interview, Barkha also told us about some of her future goals and projects “One project that has already been announced by Jio Studios is The Great Wedding of Munnes which will release later this year. I am very excited about it. The entire look of the character I am playing is very interesting. It is like nothing anyone has ever seen me before in.” Booming with positive energy and quirkiness, Barkha Singh ends the interview with a heart-warming message for her fans- “YOLO. Everyone should really believe in living in the present moment. There is no point in spending time over-thinking. If you want to do something, do it now, don’t waste time procrastinating. If you feel like doing something, trust your gut and go for it!” SEARCH Karishma Kotak Playing Her Innings In Fashion, Sports And Fitness COVER STORIES Musings With Maryam Zolghadr COVER STORIES Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress COVER STORIES Kavya Thapar And Her Versatile Acting Career That Cuts Across Regional Lines COVER STORIES Ahsaas Channa Talks About Her Mother Being The Inspiration Behind Her Career COVER STORIES POPULAR POSTS Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Dialogues That Never Disappoint With Actor Saqib Ayub 4 April 2024 COVER STORIES by Anjali Educate, Empower, Excel: Priyanka Chahar Choudhary's Inspirational Overture 15 November 2023 COVER STORIES by Akshra Khandelwal Purab Kohli’s Cinematic Expedition Through Films, Travel And Self-Expression 22 September 2023 COVER STORIES by Aparajita Jaiswal Exploring The Path Of Aspiring Actors And Producers: Insights From Anil Singh Chandel 6 September 2023 COVER STORIES RELATED POSTS Advertisement
