  • Mannat Singh, the story of an aspiring actress

by Aparajita Jaiswal Mannat Singh, the story of an aspiring actress 28 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement Mannat Singh is not just a successful model but also an aspiring actress and found a passion for acting through pure serendipity. A young, goofy, introvert whose life changed when she entered the world of modeling through Miss India, moving out of her shell. "I thought that there's so much more that I could do and I'm not just this shy person. I can go out there in the world and try to have big dreams and I can achieve whatever I want if I put my mind to it," Mannat goes on tell us "I am really glad that I took that scary step of coming to a different city from a town where everything was my comfort alongside my my family. Taking that leap of faith, coming here and working for my dreams every day, I feel like that is commendable and that is the reason that I do this. I want to be an actor and I love what I do. I love where my life is going to go and the direction that I'm on. And that's all that I've got." Mannat Singh expresses how as an actor she wishes to bring the character to life and also be true to the character she is playing. As an actor you're always striving and being fearless enough to take chances. "The whole point acting us to bring the character to life. Everybody has a process which is very different and it's a very subjective thing. It differs from person to person, actor to actor. So I don't think there's a set way of performing this art but I feel it depends on the person and the actor." There are several stages of being an actor in a show or a film. There are certain thrilling aspects and there are certain parts where hard work and focus is key. Mannat comments on the same, "I feel that I embrace and enjoy the whole process. From getting the script and reading the script, understanding the writer's point of view to actually bringing the character to life and adding my own personal touch, the whole process is extremely thrilling to me. When you're auditioning and you're going about the scene and performing in front of people, I feel like there comes a point for me where I'm knee deep into the character that I start improvising. So, when I'm improvising, I am really getting under the skin of the character and it's just coming really naturally to me. That is the point where I know that I can do this. That particular point is very exciting and thrilling for me." "Not having explored many genres yet, I would be really excited to do a thriller or mystery film or show but the most difficult genre to perform, in my opinion, is comedy, because I feel like if you can make the audience laugh and you know it all comes with ease to you, is the most difficult thing to do. If ever got a chance, I'm sure that I'll have to work really hard. As a person, I believe I'm funny and have a good sense of humor but while performing a comedic role, I believe it will be one of the most difficult things to do but I’d still like to explore that." Having asked what present day mega director inspires her and she would like to be directed by, Mannat answers with a slight glow in her eye as she talks about her inspiration, "The filmmaker that inspires me the most and that I would love to work with in the future is Sanjay Leela Bhansali as I have just really liked his work since I was a little child. I've been watching him since Devdas and then I absolutely loved guzaarish and Ram Leela, eventually all the series that he's made, all the great films that he's made till date. I like his process, the way that he makes his characters a certain way, the whole direction process and it's just very thrilling to the eye from an audience's point of view. I would like to be directed by him." Mannat believes that as an actor we must pursue and the amount of effort and work one puts in their art will always prove fruitful. As an actor, with all hardships one faces, one must always keep going and pushing their boundaries without a shadow of doubt. She speaks about her father who is a motivational speaker, she says he always said, "Mannat you will be really glad if you give it your all, if you have tried really hard as you’ll never have regrets. Don't give up. This is my dream and this is what I want to work for. That's stuck with me and that's what I tell myself. Even on days when I'm feeling low, I don't get up and I'm not able to do what I want to but there are days that you have to pick yourself up and remind yourself of the purpose that you have aspired to achieve." The filmmaker that inspires me the most and that I would love to work with in the future is Sanjay Leela Bhansali as I have just really liked his work since I was a little child. • Kaveri Priyam On Making Her Childhood Dream Come True

by Anushka Sharma Kaveri Priyam On Making Her Childhood Dream Come True 13 March 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement In a candid interview, Kaveri Priyam tells us that she had absolutely no idea about how to start working in the industry! All she was clear about was getting herself enrolled in an acting institute and continuing her theatres. Afterwards, she came to know about the auditions happening in Aram nagar and without the knowledge of the do’s and don’ts, she simply started giving them! Slowly, she started learning the various things about the industry and as it was a long process, she had the opportunity of experiencing the ups and downs, the rights and wrongs and helping herself when needed which further helped her to sustain in the industry. Kaveri says that it’s all those initial years which are helping her to support herself till date. She tells us that her experience was very good apart from the times when casting directors asked for money or when they tell you that you are not the appropriate shape or size or colour for this industry. She said that for some time she even took these comments on herself and tried to work in accordance with them but eventually she realised what was good for her and what was not. Kaveri says, “Working in the industry has always been very fun. Touchwood, I have been very lucky because I got the opportunity to work with very lovely people who never made me feel that I was a newcomer in the beginning.” As a child, she always wanted to become an actor. She says she was a born drama queen and was always a part of extracurricular activities. She says she has been lucky to have a good support system; good teachers who were very proactive and her mom, who got her enrolled in various classes. Straight after school, cycling daily to her Kathak classes was extremely hectic but she really enjoyed the part where she used to be on the stage. She used to act, direct, write stories and enact them with friends which unknowingly turned out to be street plays and attract a lot of crowd on the spot. She says that as a child you would think that you are just doing all this for your playtime fun but gradually she realised that she really liked doing all of it by heart. That’s when she decided to become an actor. Despite having a studious family and mindset she realised she didn’t really enjoy it all, and acting was actually what she truly wanted to do. The day she got rejected from one of the exams was her turning point. Thus, she started giving auditions, doing theatres in Delhi and finally she got selected for a show and came to Mumbai. The show didn’t work out well but it brought her to the place where she belonged! Talking about her upcoming projects she tells us, “I am super excited for my upcoming show which is going to air on Sony Sab very soon. The name is ‘Dil diyan Gallan’ and as the name suggests, it’s Punjab based story. So I am looking forward to it, playing a new character, getting into someone else’s shoes. I am super excited for it and also for my new music video which is going to be released soon.” Kaveri speaks about what she loves the most about acting and she said, “I love the way it takes you to different places, makes you meet a lot of different people and the way it helps you grow as a person and an artist. When you work with amazing people from different walks of life, you get to know more about life in general, about different people who exist in the society and with each character you get to be in someone else’s shoes. I believe an actor is someone who can live a thousand lives, which is something really attractive and I literally live to do this. I live to live different characters, different lives, visit new places, locations and meet new people and work with amazing directors and producers. So yes, that is what I feel life is, it should be exciting every day.” We asked her where does she see herself in the next 5 years in this ever-changing entertainment industry and she answered, “I know that this industry is ever-changing and I think nothing is permanent and change is the essence of life so I do not fear change, all I expect from myself is that I adapt to the change, adjust and keep entertaining people. In the coming 5 years I see myself as someone who knows all the tricks and trades of my field and then maybe later I can decide on what sort of work I want to do in the industry. I want to progress, that’s for sure.” Apart from being the character, she thinks, to look like the character is a challenging job. If the character is plumpy, extremely thin or ranky, it is something which takes a toll on your health because there is a limited amount of time in which an actor has to look a certain way and if not followed under proper guidance, it might hamper your health. She says that it’s not particularly tough but extremely challenging, and especially for her as she is a big foodie. But, as of now she hasn’t got the chance to completely transform herself and she does look forward to doing such roles in the future. Kaveri speaks candidly about the pressure in her work and what she does to tackle it, to which she simply said that she, personally, never really had to deal with any such thing. “If you enjoy doing something and can feel that it is meant for you then, that’s it. There is pressure in every other sector and I think that it is a part of work and it should be taken lightly. There is this constant thought that should be there in your mind that you are getting to do what you always wanted to, and so, it is a blessing. There are certain schedules you have to adjust yourself in but that is the fun and challenging part of it which makes it exciting.” About her journey and the obstacles, she tells us that, “Wherever I went to take acting classes, I was always told that I am gifted, which I didn’t understand at that time, but, slowly I got to know that some things are actually there within me but they need to be polished. To convert the talent into skills, the theatres and acting classes helped a lot. Talking about the journey, initially it was tough as you are exploring new things but once you cross that phase, get a break, get appreciated, gain the confidence then things become a little easier. Although competition is there, you have to be determined, focused, keep working on your craft and that is how one succeeds in any field. It has not exactly been a roller coaster ride but, I had my own challenges which I overcame. One of the challenges was that I was overweight for this industry but I decided I wanted to look good on camera and I made that transformation for my first show, from being a very plumpy to a very thin and lean girl. I won't call it an obstacle, but just a part of the job.” For our readers who may not be as familiar with her line of work, she says, “ Be it any industry, there are all sorts of people so, telling someone that this or that industry is not good, is baseless. Meeting, approaching and having the right circle of people around you is very important to achieve anything in life because there has got to be someone who shows you the path and the right direction. Maybe you will find it on your own or someone from your near and dear ones will guide you, but that direction is very important otherwise you might just be all over the place.” Be it any industry, move forward, stay focused, go in the right direction and make sure you meet the right people. • Waluscha De Sousa On Being Her ‘True Self’ And Going On The Dream Journey

by Panav Minocha Waluscha De Sousa On Being Her ‘True Self’ And Going On The Dream Journey 29 December 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement Waluscha De Sousa is an Indian actress and model who made her debut into Bollywood in the 2016 film Fan. She was recently in the Hindi-language thriller on Sony Liv-Tanaav. Waluscha made her debut into the fashion and modeling industry at the early age of 16. When asked the pros and cons of this early venture into the world of glamour, she replied that she didn’t plan at first to start working at 16. However, she just happened to be discovered at that age by the late fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, and felt extremely fortunate to have worked under his guidance. “He held my hand and never let go. I was very very lucky and very very fortunate to have someone like him (Wendell)”, she said. Having achieved milestones early on in her career, Waluscha mentioned how she became the face of Wendell’s clothing brand, got to be on the cover of a Femina magazine at the age of 17, and starred in a Pepsi commercial with Shah Rukh Khan at the same age. She also talked about how she went onto becoming MTV’s fresh face, and walked in the first Lakm é fashion week in India. She expressed immense gratitude towards Wendell Rodricks for all these achievements. “I owe him so much. So much of what I am today wouldn’t have been possible without him. For me, the journey was smooth with a few bumps along the way, but when I look back I’m just very grateful for having somebody like that in my life.” Waluscha comes from a mixed cultural background, being half Goan-Portuguese (from her father’s side) and half German (from her mother’s side). She was asked how this affected her career, and if it hampered it in any way. Her response: “Yes and no. I inherited my mother’s external appearance. This helped me immensely in the glamour industry. Although, I am inherently very much Indian and I’ve inherited this from my father.” She explained how India and Indian culture played a huge role in her life. “I was born and brought up in India, studied in India, and have my friends and family here.“ On the other hand, Waluscha also talked about some hardships she faced in the film industry. “Unfortunately I didn’t see the same embrace in the film industry. There was this preconceived notion in everybody’s heads that I was not Indian and didn’t speak the language, or I’m not desi, when it’s actually quite the contrary.” She said that she knew how to read and write in not only Hindi, but having grown up in Goa, was fluent in Marathi and Konkani just as well. “All the work that I’ve done in web-series and films has helped me break this notion.” Starting her career as a model, Waluscha only later ventured into the film industry. When asked if this was always her goal or if it happened inevitably, she replied that acting was something she always wanted to do. “The arts were something which always attracted me. Goa is a land filled with singers, musicians, and theatre. I was always drawn to the stage, and you would have seen me on the stage much more than you would see me in the classroom. It was a space that I really enjoyed and it was always inherently who I was. “ Waluscha also appeared to be incredibly enlightened by the response that her latest series- Tanaav, has received. “Tanaav has helped me break the notion that I am in some way un-Indian much more than any of my other work done in the past. The response that has come in post Tanaav has been overwhelming. I cannot even describe the feeling. Two days post it’s release, suddenly everyone knew my name, people who matter actually saw and appreciated my work…” Tanaav is a Hindi-language action thriller streaming on Sony Liv, revolving around conflict in the Kashmir Valley. It is a remake of the Israeli TV series Fauda, which is streamed internationally on Netflix. Waluscha plays the role of Zainab Riaz in the show. • Karishma Kotak Playing Her Innings In Fashion, Sports And Fitness

by Rupashree Ravi Karishma Kotak Playing Her Innings In Fashion, Sports And Fitness 30 June 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement Actress, model, and television presenter Karishma Kotak is a well-known face in the entertainment industry. From Bigg Boss to acting in films to hosting the IPL, she has come a long way and has found her path in showbiz. She is also a huge health and fitness enthusiast. In today’s dynamic and ever-changing industry, Karishma Kotak is definitely an all-rounder. Such an industry with immense talent and competition can be difficult for the new generation to leave their mark. “I believe leaving a mark is a personal journey. I don't compare my success to anybody else. A successful Bollywood actress will look at Julia Roberts and think that they're not successful, but they are. I think the industry keeps shifting. Right now, I have done a movie called Ira and I've done a guest appearance in Shaad Ali’s Mister Mummy . But I didn't have this kind of work two years ago. If you're willing to work hard, there will be so many opportunities for you. If you're good, you can get that work. I don't know if I necessarily want to leave a mark on the industry. I'm just happy that I'm working.” When asked about her experience so far as an actress, she said, “I am very busy with anchoring and doing projects in-between. I'm just happy because I think as an artist, you just want to do good work so whether I'm anchoring IPL, whether I'm in Dubai hosting a T10 League, whether I'm doing a movie or shooting for a brand, I'm just happy to be given these opportunities. Because that's the best thing you can do.” Currently, Kotak is working on many different projects. She recently wrapped up the dark web techno-thriller, Ira, and will also be seen portraying a guest role in the film, Mister Mummy . The movie also stars Ritesh and Genelia Deshmukh. Kotak cites Penelope Cruz as her inspiration along with Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She mentioned that her favourite role so far was her guest appearance in Freaky Ali alongside Arbaaz Khaan, Sohail Khan, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. “It was a really fun opportunity. We got to shoot on this beautiful golf course in Pune. It was such a fond memory for me. Although it was just a short cameo, it was a lot of fun and I worked with a great team,” she said. Sharing her views on body shaming and body positivity, she said, “I think there's a lot of pressure on women to look a certain size and a certain way. And I definitely think social media has a huge part to play in it. People need to understand that a lot of celebrities go under the knife to meet unrealistic expectations. I believe if you lose too much weight, it ages your face, and it makes you look older. So, to look youthful, a little bit of plumpness on the face, and a little bit of collagen on the face are needed. There's no such thing as fault reduction. I believe you should learn to enjoy life, but in a balance.” Kotak also left an inspiring message for the younger generation and all her fans . “I think young women and men need to stop putting pressure on themselves to be a size zero or a size two or go on unnecessary keto diets or intermittent fasting. Everybody has a different body and their body reacts to things differently. What works for someone else will not always work out for you. So do the research. Take social media every day in small doses. Remember there's more to life than your weight and your health is the most important aspect. So, thank you to my lovely followers on Instagram and Twitter for following me and for your love and your kindness.” SEARCH Karishma Kotak Playing Her Innings In Fashion, Sports And Fitness COVER STORIES Musings With Maryam Zolghadr COVER STORIES Madhura Naik talks about the Life of an Actress COVER STORIES Kavya Thapar And Her Versatile Acting Career That Cuts Across Regional Lines COVER STORIES Ahsaas Channa Talks About Her Mother Being The Inspiration Behind Her Career COVER STORIES POPULAR POSTS Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Dialogues That Never Disappoint With Actor Saqib Ayub 4 April 2024 COVER STORIES by Anjali Educate, Empower, Excel: Priyanka Chahar Choudhary's Inspirational Overture 15 November 2023 COVER STORIES by Akshra Khandelwal Purab Kohli’s Cinematic Expedition Through Films, Travel And Self-Expression 22 September 2023 COVER STORIES by Aparajita Jaiswal Exploring The Path Of Aspiring Actors And Producers: Insights From Anil Singh Chandel 6 September 2023 COVER STORIES RELATED POSTS Advertisement

  • Kavya Thapar And Her Versatile Acting Career That Cuts Across Regional Lines

by Aparajita Jaiswal Kavya Thapar And Her Versatile Acting Career That Cuts Across Regional Lines 12 February 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement Kavya Thapar is an Indian actress and model who works in Telugu, Tamil as well as Hindi films. Having an illustrious career in both film and fashion, she talked to us about her upcoming projects, her big break, her fashion mantra and some other things that tell us about the versatile person that she is. Kavya was first asked about her “big break” in her career. She highlighted the years 2017 and 2018 as some of the most defining years of her career. She replied “ I started doing ads in 2017 and got my first Telugu movie in October 2017 and my first Tamil and Hindi movies by 2018” Here, Kavya is talking about the movie Ee Maaya Peremito , which was a Telugu language movie that came out in 2018. Kavya played the role of Sheetal Jain in the film, who is the daughter of a rich businessperson. Having worked both in the South and the North of India, Kavya seems to have enjoyed the best of both worlds in the Indian film industry. Carrying this assumption, we asked how she would describe her experience of working both in the South and in Bollywood. Her response met our expectations, when she said “Both the industries have a lot to offer and it’s been a very exciting and overwhelming experience for me. I’ve always been blessed to find amazing opportunities in both the industries and I’ve found some people who are extremely dear to me and are now family. Overall my experience has been nothing short of a blessing and I thank god and my Guruji every day for my journey.’ Her gratefulness for her success was indeed heart-warming. Kavya’s filmography spans across a wide variety of films by now, with distinct plots, genres, roles and of course, languages. Therefore, we had to ask her, which of her works was the closest to her heart. Interestingly, her reply was that she simply could not decide. “I don’t think I can be biased when it comes to my work. Every project I take up I believe in 100% and it’s like my baby.” We then asked her what her advice was for the numerous young women who are trying to get into her industry. The simplicity and authenticity of her advice impressed us, as she advised young aspirants to simply be themselves. She also emphasized hard-work and honesty, along with the right amount of faith and grace. “Don’t find easy ways and solutions. Be patient and keep going with a smile and a prayer.” she said. Kavya was also asked by us about any “fashion mantra” she followed, and would like to share. Her reply was quite amusing, while still being incredibly genuine and profound- a delicate combination indeed. “For me fashion is what my stylists suggest honestly. Otherwise personally I only seek maximum comfort. I believe clothes are made to fit us and we aren’t supposed to fit into clothes. Also size doesn’t matter so wear what you want when you want and how you want just be happy and comfortable. ” Finally, she told us about her upcoming projects. We discovered that 2023 is going to be quite a busy year for Kavya, as she is working on 3 movies down south (two in Tamil and one in Telugu). Without telling us too much and keeping us on the hook, she also mentioned that she has “something very exciting coming up” in Hindi on Amazon Prime. We can’t wait for whatever that might be and wish her the very best for her career. • Ramandeep Kaur, Charmingly Dauntless

by Aparajita Jaiswal Ramandeep Kaur, Charmingly Dauntless 23 September 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement It is always natural to feel extremely proud of the new self created out of the previous portions of ourselves! One such person with extreme sense of pride stands to be Ramandeep Kaur! Being a part of the Punjabi industry makes you extremely filled with energy in spite of the obstacles. Speaking of which, the gracious actor talks about her journey, mentioning, "I began as a manager in a salon and opportunities were presented naturally, quite willingly by others and situations supported those opportunities and I was fortunate enough to take advantage. It has been a passion of mine, all my life." Talking of obstacles, one doesn’t always get what she/he wants. "I prefer to perceive rejections as challenges, motivating me to do better," the actress says, gracefully. The very thought of making it huge in spite of rejections, hypes one up. In a creative field such as acting, it is a regular roller coaster where every artist goes through rejections and fame. The journey of fame deals with the public eye and staying grounded is very important. Ramandeep comments when asked how she deals with fame, "I stay humble." The very essence of the Punjabi film industry and the anticipation of where it is leading excites the audience. "I feel the Punjabi industry is on the way up, it is getting more worldwide exposure and I am excited to be a part of it," says the actress. Speaking of the industry, the reader often gets mesmerised by what they observe on social media. When asked about the trends that she rejoices in, her confidence peaked as she exclaimed, "I am the trend on social media." Ramandeep Kaur expresses her inspiration to be the humble blockbuster star, Diljit Dosanjh. While getting inspired in all ways, Ramandeep comments on her love for fashion. "I love fashion and I follow all trends to ensure I am always on top of it." Fashion brings in a lot of stereotypes attached to it as interpreted by society, majorly associated with body shaming and fitness. However, being an actress it's perceived differently, "I understand that the world is becoming diverse and is allowing people of all shapes and sizes to share the spotlight. However, I myself attend the gym regularly to maintain my figure." To stay on top, in both, one's professional and personal life, is a big deal. Thus to mark the lines between reel and real life for an actor is even more tough! "I stay in character on set and on only on set, I never take my character home with me. My personal life is a completely separate entity from my work." This actually is difficult to fathom for the readers as the work she engages in all seem so perfectly put, however, that is what would also make a rising beauty, like her, such a great actress! "My work does not affect my personal life as I try to be professional to all extents, taking my personal life seriously and looking after it as closely as I do for my career." As the audience looks forward to her engaging them in more of her films, it is also interesting to have a glance at her perspective. The career of every actor brings her to different roles and it is quite obvious to be biased to one or having regrets in having played a certain character. However, for Ramandeep, there are no regrets in the roles she has enacted. "I am proud of all the characters I have had the opportunity to play." My work does not affect my personal life as I am a professional and take my career very seriously! • In Conversation And More With Payal Ghosh

by Anushka Sharma In Conversation And More With Payal Ghosh 11 March 2023 COVER STORIES Advertisement Advertisement Accompanied with a vivacious personality and an appealing charm, Payal Ghosh is a class apart indeed. In a candid take on her life’s trajectory with us, we uncovered a lot that lies under the layers. Speaking of when she got her first break, she said, “I was just 17 when I got my first opportunity. I wasn't even out of college yet, I just went to accompany a friend to an audition and I got a movie Prayanam directed by a National Award winning director Mr. Yeleti. It was a fantastic experience.” Getting an opportunity at the age of 17 is definitely a God’s given bliss! Speaking of how she would describe her experience working in the South as well as Bollywood, she talks to us about how different the overall outlook is. She states, “They both are different. Down south they do a lot of pre-production work. This is not to say that Bollywood doesn't, but it's more abundant there. The shoots are also wrapped sooner down south. Bollywood is a different ballgame. The audience is wide and you are critiqued for everything that you do. As we unfurled a few topics on which one of her works is closest to her heart, she tells us that she cannot choose or pick a single project! “All of them. I can't differentiate between them. They are like my babies. I’ve worked so much that no work is big or less for me, I loved all my work and every artist should love every work of theirs.” Art is all about nourishing a metaphorical baby that feeds off your talent, after all! Speaking of her upcoming projects, she states, “One of them is Red which is completed with Krishna. It's a thriller. I have started working on "Shaque the doubt" which is also a thriller. The shooting commences in London soon. I’ve many more projects coming up to surprise the Audience and my fans.” When we asked Payal about this one piece of advice for the girls who are keen to join the industry, she tells us, “Be bold, be yourself and don't take the shortcut route. If you work hard enough for your dreams you'll surely make it. There is enough room for talent. Believe in yourself.” However, acting isn’t all that she’s known for. Payal has some slick sense of dressing as well. When asked about her fashion mantra, she tells us the key to knowing it all: Being yourself in whatever you wear, with confidence and happiness, only to never go wrong with it! As the conversation divulged into the topics of mental health, she has a rather interesting take on the entire subject. She states, “Do start with a goal for your mental health content. ... Do use credible sources. ... Do include the details on how to get in touch with professional help. ... Don't limit people's identities to their mental health.” Speaking of her views on body positivity, she tells us, “All body types are beautiful and deserve acceptance. Body positivity is guided by the understanding that feeling positive and accepting of appearance can improve mental health, reduce the risk of eating disorders, and allow someone to function at their best. Needless to say, this interview with Payal Ghosh was indeed a refreshing take on life, Bollywood and perspectives in general.
